CCome Dance With Us by Lynnel Cochrane

Only two weeks left to get your tickets for Be-hind the Mask, our Welcome Back/Halloween dance on Friday, October 26. When consider-ing what to wear, words from Andrew Lloyd Webber's song The Masquerade, from Phantom of the Opera comes to mind:

Flash of Mauve, splash of puce Fool and King, ghoul and goose Green and black, queen and priest Trace of rouge, face of beast

While costumes are optional, for those who like to come in disguise, there will be a cos-tume parade and prizes. With the return of the highly requested band Snake Eyes, it will in-deed be a spirited night. As always, the Super-stition Center will take on a mystical facade, making for a Spooktacular evening of paranormal entertainment.

Board Highlights Submitted by Peter Cavoto

The Sunset remodel is on full speed. Hopefully you have regis-tered for the email blasts from FirstService, our management company. Suzanne Murray, our Community Manager sends out weekly updates with photos. Thank you, Suzanne. She then requests they be posted on the MountainBrook Village web-site. We are excited by the professional skill and communica-tion of our contractor, S.D. Crane and our project manager, Bill Duncan, DCA architectural. Having a professional, non-resident project manager, ensures our community needs are met and on budget. This month, the Board also approved a revised Project Management Policy which states no communi-ty member may be a project manager due to liability issues. It was determined that MBV needs proven expertise to meet our requirements. We do use community experts such as archi-

tects, engineers or interior designers as consultants to deter-mine the plan and design under the direction of the Planning or Building and Grounds steering committees. The furniture, fixtures and equipment for the Sunset were ap-proved. Due to the increased size of the copper(main) room and the room to the left of the entrance door there is an in-crease of chairs to 120. Thirty-two of those chairs are the pre-sent green chairs which will be refurbished with new foam, material, refinished wood, etc. The chairs have commercial grade rollers and hard wood. The new chairs are basically the same chair with a slightly different arm curve. They have the same support, depth, height, quality of roller and fabric with a 200,000-rub testing. The tables we have will be refurbished also and newly pur-chased ones will be similar quality. These are the sturdy, green topped tables. The team checked comfort, stability, safety and endurance of the furnishings. There will be a total of 30 tables. Three moveable carts clad in copper sheeting and wood, one 6 feet and two 4 feet can be configured for potlucks, dessert and coffee for receptions. A sturdy chair will also be available to sit at reception cart. There is to be a juried art selection of both two and three-dimensional art for locked display on walls and a locked cabinet in the Sunset center. The Board approved changes to the architectural guidelines. Please remember all changes and additions to any exterior structure or landscaping, must be submitted for approval. This helps maintain the value of MBV. As always, we welcome your input and questions at board meetings or via email at [email protected]. Thank you for your support and guidance. It is your community and we are here to serve you.

From Your Dance Committee by Lynnel Cochrane

Tickets are already on sale for our next dance coming in November!

At our Sweet Confections dance on Friday, November 9, we will be welcoming a new band to MBV, called Guilty Pleasures. Songs such as Sugar Shack by Jimmy Gilmore and the Fireballs 1963, Sugar Sugar by the Archies 1965 and How Sweet it is to be Loved by You by James Taylor 1973, may give you a better idea of how 'delicious' this evening of listening and dancing will be! While attendees often bring a table snack to share, for this event dancers may wish to bring a sweet treat/guilty pleasure. After the dance and until we meet again, we wish you Sweet Dreams as sung by the Eurythmics in 1983.

Volunteers Needed for Audio/Visual Team Does technology fascinate you? Have you wondered how the programs in the Superstition Center are produced? Does what happens backstage or in the control booth interest you? MountainBrook has an Audio/Visual Team that works behind the scenes to deliver high quality programming for the enjoyment of our residents and guests. We are looking for new volunteers to join our team. We invite residents to drop by the control booth to check out our facility and see how it all works. Team members would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Please email or call Jay Raleigh (A/V team lead) with your questions.

The Secret to Improve your Quality of Life By Pam Burks

The secret is volunteering, and it’s not really a secret tothose who already volunteer, but there is “a growing body of research that shows an association between volunteering and the mental and physical health benefits in particular. Older volun-teers report lower mortality rates, lower rates of depression, few-er physical limitations and higher levels of well-being.” “As people leave the workforce, most of them miss that sense of belonging to a bigger network of people, and to being needed and valued. Volunteering is a wonderful way to get that sense of connection and value back, all while providing help to others.” MountainBrook Village and the Gold Canyon Community have many groups, clubs, and service organizations that can offer you an unlimited number of opportunities to serve, where you can share your life-long acquired achievements, talents, and inter-ests. Check out the list of clubs and groups in your Mountaineer.

Gold Canyon Lions is one of these organizations. By be-coming a Gold Canyon Lion, you will find that giving service to others will be fun and educational, while building friendships with a group of dedicated service-oriented fellow Lions. Last year we performed over 2000 vision screenings for our local elementary school children. We conducted a successful Pancake Breakfast with Santa Claus an Elf and all, that earned $2300, for our charities and worthy causes. Our biggest fundraiser last year was the Luau - great food, hula dancers and fire dancers that earned over $10,000 for several charities and worthy causes. So why not contact Pam Burks, Membership Chairman at 480-214-5555, and she will set up an opportunity for you to come to a complementary lunch with our group at the Gold Canyon Golf Resort and view our club structure and members. Come on! Don’t be shy! Give us a look over and enjoy lunch and learn more about the “largest service organization in the world.” The Lions organization just celebrated its first 100 years, and our Gold Canyon Lions motto is “We Serve!” So become a Lion,

I’ll be waiting for your call! 480-214-5555

HIs talk will be stunning, especially after reliving Senator John McCain’s experience in the past few months! Hello MBV! I am honored to be selected as October’s Artist of the Month. I have been painting all my life. My Mom is an artist and taught classes most of my life. I’d come home from school and join in her classes. I taught art classes at the resort my folks owned in Harrison, Michigan. During my internship in Traverse City, MI., I did animal portraits to get through col-lege. I have my degree in medical science and art. I now own and operate my own business call Artsparks. Come join us monthly in the Saguaro Center, third Thursday of each month at 4:00pm (byob)! Mom is now 91 and just left the Apache Junc-tion Police dept. as their volunteer sketch artist!

Fun Fact: Mom and I wanted to go on a 16-day cruise through the Panama Canal, so we rented a booth at Mesa Marketplace swap meet, painted, and sold enough paintings to pay for our cruise and a gift for Dad. Dad being a Navy Veteran did not choose to cruise so we bought him his golf cart with the license plate “Al’s Cruise”! We still have a lot of jewelry we traded for paint-ings. We cruised in style!!

VILLAGE THEATRE Bill Wash

The MBV Theatre brings Ken Ludwig's Moon Over Buffalo to its stage. This madcap comedy centers around George and Char-lotte Hay, fading stars of Broadway who are appearing in Cyrano De Bergerac in their rundown touring company in Buffalo, New York. On the brink of a disastrous split-up caused by George's dalliances with a young ingénue, Charlotte threatens to leave and George goes on a grief stricken drinking binge. Then word is received that they may get one last shot at stardom. Frank Capra is coming to attend their matinee and if he likes what he sees, he might cast them in leading rolls in his movie remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Will George be sober enough to emote? Mistaken identities, confusion, pratfalls, slamming doors aplenty and back stage shenanigans in this fast paced, hilarious, screwball comedy and a throwback to the personalities that inhibit the world of thea-ter.

Directing the play is Kathy Buelow. Kathy is no stranger to community theater, having appeared in three plays on the MBV stage. Prior to moving to MountainBrook, she appeared in Music Man, Dr. Cook's Garden, and as Ethel in Moon Over Buffa-lo. She is most proud of receiving an Outstanding Actor award from the American Association of Community Theatre for her por-trayal of Hope in Almost Maine. Actors appearing in Moon Over Buffalo are Karleen Huffman, David Huffman, Merry Brennan, Linda Belland, Barbara Wolf, Pat Hardie, Bill McCracken and John Soper.

Meetings of the MountainBrook Village Theatre and Theater Board of Directors are "open" and may be attended by all those inter-ested in theater. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month from October through April in the Palo Verde Room at 1pm. The Theatre Board of Directors are: Jim Mosier, President; Karleen Huffman, Vice President; Barbara Wolf, Treasurer, Rog-er Renstrom, Secretary; and Kathy Buelow, Pat Hardie and Randy Ratcliff, Members At Large. The next Board meeting will be Thursday, November 1, at 1pm in the Palo Verde Room.

If you have any questions, please call Bill Wash (acting Secretary) at 480 983-1791.

STRIKE UP THE BAND

MBV residents are invited to join the MBV Band. The band is under the direction of Gary Browning and we meet on Thursdays from 2 pm - 4 pm in the Superstition Center beginning November 1st. The band will be playing for the Veteran’s Day program on November 11 about 9am. Our winter concert is January 27th at 3pm and our spring concert is March 31st at 3pm.

Come join us and play some good music and enjoy other MBV musicians.

If you have any question call Donna & John Read at 480-671-9828.

Hearing Assistance Can you hear me now? If you can’t, let the MountainBrook Audio/Visual Team help you.

We’ve come a long way!! Our hearing-impaired residents are important to us. That’s why the community installed a hearing assistance system in the Super-stition Center. The A/V Team wants all residents to be aware of this feature. The system consists of a transmitter and individual receivers available to hand out to anyone attending a program. These receivers are loaned out to audience members at no cost. The team is interested in meeting with you to demonstrate the system and answer your questions. We want you to fully enjoy the pro-grams and events available at MountainBrook. We are also interested in helping residents and guests by upgrading the system to accommodate newer hearing aids equipped Bluetooth or Tele-Coil technologies. =========================== Starting in October, the deadline for all articles/admissions is the 25th of each month. Unfortunately, because of the new, tighter schedule, there can be No exceptions, No changes, No additional articles after the 25th of the month. (FYI, you did GREAT for October, thank you)

As one of our Presidents once said, “Let me make this perfectly clear” “The September Mountaineer will be our last Online Mountaineer” and “as always, an online version will also be on the website”. HOLY COW, did I hear about these two conflicting statements. In my head they made perfect sense. I guess I thought everyone knew that every Mountaineer, once published, is also added to our website and is available to anyone who would like to read it or refer to it online (mbvaz.org). There are 6+ years of Mountaineers on the website (way before my time). Sorry for the confusion, Diana Jensen, Editor

MountainBrook Resident and Local Residents Appeared Sep-tember 16, 2018 on

FOX News Live Town Hall America With Harris Faulkner By: Pam Burks

FOX News contacted Pam Burks, Gold Canyon, MountainBrook resident, who is also the Gold Canyon Republican Chairman, to appear and bring guests to the National Town Hall America, for a bipartisan discussion on immigration, with host, Harris Faulk-ner. It aired September 16, Sunday night live at 5PM AZ time and again at 8PM. The event highlighted exclusive taped inter-views with U.S. Senate candidates, Democrat, Kyrsten Sinema, and Republican candidate, Martha McSally, along with three Panel guests, Art Del Cueto, Vice President, National Border Patrol Council, Erika Andiola, Latino Outreach Spokeswoman, and Jim Chilton 5th Generation Arizona Rancher, his ranch sits on the US/Mexico Border.

Pam Burks brought six guests, three of the guests spoke on na-tional television, former Pinal County Supervisor, Bryan Martyn, recent Pinal County candidate for Constable, Jack McClaren, and local businessman and who is also Gold Canyon Rotary Club Program Director, Walter (Harvey) Clark.

The experience was exciting, and very informative. Being part of a national TV Production and seeing up-close how it all comes together was amazing. Harris Faulkner is a professional, smart, compassionate woman, who was genuinely interested in hearing from all sides.

If you missed the event you can still find it on YouTube, with the following inquiry, paste it into your browser: Town Hall Ameri-ca with Harris Faulkner 9/16/18 | Fox News September 16, 2018. (Select skip ad)

Tennis Talk by Betsy BakerTennis play continued this summer at MountainBrook, despite courts 1 and 2 being out of commission due to a monsoon storm in July and players only having access to court 3. We anticipate the fences for courts 1 and 2 will be repaired by mid-October at the latest, so get ready for the new season. Tentative Fall Ten-nis dates: Monday Womens Tennis October 29th; Tuesday Womens Tennis October 30th; Wednesday Men’s Tennis No-vember 7th; Friday Mixed Doubles November 9th. Doubles Tennis Tip- Identify Rover vs Anchor. When playing with a new partner, take a few minutes to decide who the “Rover” (the one who will cover much of the back court) and who the “Anchor” (the one who will handle the near court) will be. This is one of the techniques that will keep the partners working to-gether instead of dividing their efforts. See YOU on the courts !

Pickleball News by Sheldon LessardWelcome back to those who’ve made the annual southern mi-gration already! With pickleball’s popularity explosion, it’s not surprising we added new members during the summer months. We will certainly be challenged this season as we attempt to squeeze our 150+ members into two full-time courts Players’ tip ... in tournaments, all teams play to the weaker opponent as winning is the goal. In recreational play, you may want to play to the stronger member of the opposing team. Although you may not win, this allows you to practice and learn from the higher-level player.

MBV Ceramics and Glass Arts The winter season is here and we have many classes set up for January, February and March. Sign-up sheets with pictures or the projects are available in the office. Be sure to look for the tab labeled “Ceramics” in the binder labeled “Classes” to sign up. Classes are limited to 12 unless otherwise noted. During the winter season, the Tuesday/Thursday schedule is as follows: Tuesday from 9:30 – 11:00 instructors for glass bottle slumping and glass fusion are available; Tuesday afternoons are reserved for ceramics with instructors available; Thursday mornings the studio is open to all techniques unless a class is scheduled; Thursday afternoons are open to all techniques.

Darts by John KloostermanNever under estimate a beginning dart thrower. Fred Greenway played darts for about a month before leaving last summer and has been back now for 4 months. When Fred returned to darts he got a healthy beginner’s handicap. Fred’s team has won games that have come down to the wire against experienced players. He has now earned a new title as the current “Bulls Eye King” by finishing a game with 2 single bulls and a double bull. Congratulations, Fred!! And our own experienced dart player, Stan Condell, has proved himself with just three darts. Stan popped a triple 20, triple 19, and a triple 18 closing half the numbers in a game of “Dirty Cricket”. Wow! World class darts happening right here in MBV. Join us for an evening of fun. TUESDAY evenings at 6:30 pm in the Ocotillo MPR. See you there!!

Pinochle Report by Barb HofmeisterThe Thursday evening group starts to gather in the Palo Verde Room about 6:30pm and play begins at 7pm If you would like to learn the game or brush up, please call me at 480-288-9745 and I will meet you there at 6pm and we will have a class and practice before play starts. We are a fun and very friendly group. High scorers for the month of September were Ken Amundsen 570, Ray Needham 565, Bonny Nielsen 526, Ray Mauzy 489 and Marilyn Wilson 465. The Tuesday Ladies’ Pinochle group meets at 1:00pm in the Mesquite Room. We are a friendly group and welcome new members. Contact Sharon Hanson at 480-415-0859 if you have any questions.

Friends of the Library by Ruth ParkerWe wish to welcome back all the residents who have been away for the summer and look forward to seeing you in the library. We on the "committee" wish to take this opportunity to thank Diane Kissner who, for 24 years, has worked tirelessly and de-votedly to make the library a shining star of MountainBrook Village. She has served in many capacities, doing what had to be done, most recently serving as co-chair of the group. We will miss her tremendously.

Book Discussion by Peggy MalsomSecrets, terror, heartache, sibling love, family loss, kidnapping and subterfuge. These are just a few hints about the powerful and memorable “near perfect novel” chosen for the November Book Discussion. We have a great line up for the reading year starting with Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate. This book is based on the heartbreaking true scandal of Georgia Tann who kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families through her Memphis Tennessee Children’s Home Society. This complex tale about two families, based on a true-life scandal, is ultimately an uplifting prize winning, compelling tale told by a master storyteller from a youngster’s point of view. The first MBV Book discussion of the 2018-19 season kicks off Wednes-day, November 14 at 2 pm in the Multi-Purpose room. It is not mandatory that you read the book before attending. See you there.

MBV Pottery Club The mission of the MBV Pottery Club is to promote and sup-port MBV residents in the pursuit of artistic expression in the field of pottery. Individuals create their own works beginning with a lump of raw clay through the processes of designing, creating, drying, bisque-firing, glazing, and high-firing. Potters range in skill level from novice beginners to experienced artists. The MBV Pottery Club meets in the Fired Arts Center on Mon-day, Wednesday & Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Resi-dents are welcome and encouraged to come down and check out the studio to see if pottery is for them. Introductory and advanced classes/workshops are offered on various Saturdays at a cost of $10 to cover materials. These half-day workshops are given by volunteer instructors and cover both hand building and wheel-throwing techniques; and are open to all MBV residents. The Club also offers opportunities for field trips and studio tours of various studios/programs in the Phoenix-Mesa area. Annual membership fee to join the Club is $25.00. For more information contact John Backes at 218-573-3626 or [email protected] or stop in during club hours.

Knitting Welcome to knitting! We are a group that meets every Tuesday at 10am in the Palo Verde Room. We welcome all levels of knitters and even people who think they might like to learn how to knit. We offer help in understanding patterns and learning new stitches. Feel free to join us any Tuesday morning, meet our knitters, and decide if the Knitting Group appeals to you. If you have any questions, please call Judi at 314-435-1552.

Supper Club. Ruth ParkerAs our weather begins to moderate (we hope), the winter resi-dents begin to return and we're hoping that they have decided over the summer that Supper Club would be a great way to meet and greet old and new friends and have a great meal be-sides. Our annual Potluck and sign up is usually the 2nd Satur-day of November. And regular dinners throughout the year are also the 2nd Saturdays of the month. And yes, we meet year-round except December. Do come in November to learn about the club or call the Chairperson - Marcia Ritenour (h-480-288-6627/c-480-577-5466). "The only time to eat diet food is while you're waiting for the steak to cook." Fairway Vistas HOA by Verna Aure, PresidentWelcome back all neighbors who have enjoyed the cooler sum-mer climates. A Board meeting is scheduled October 25th at 10am. The meeting will be held in the Library Conference Room since the Sunset Room is not available. We would like to hear from all the homeowners and look forward to seeing you there.

Social Hour: Every Tuesday night year ‘round, there’s a long standing, very popular, free MountainBrook event in the Superstition Center. Residents gather at 5:00 PM to enjoy an evening out with old and new friends. The LAST Tuesday of the month is a POT-LUCK which is meant to be a full meal. The fare on “regular” Tuesdays could be classified as snacks/appetizers or desserts. As are all MBV events, this is BYOB. MountainBrook pro-vides the tableware, The Chairperson maintains a schedule of weekly volunteers to ‘Host’ the Social Hour. The task is simple, and it is another way to meet people. These volunteers set up the food tables, organize the food as it arrives, make the welcome announce-ments with a little clean up afterwards. Don’t be afraid; there are usually others who join in helping out. Please consider joining the group on a Tuesday night; singles and couples are welcome. We try to keep an eye out for new faces and welcome them to join a table of ‘veterans’. Arlene Pytko (480-288-8011) is the Chairperson for this event.

GOLD CANYON GARDEN CLUB The Garden Club attempted a cleanup project of the medi-an area between the intersections of Superstition/MountainBrook/Kings Ranch so Civic Beautification Chairwoman Suzanne Dryden called the ADOT Chief Engineer of Road Maintenance and informed him of what was intended. He said we could not do any planting but that he would send a crew out here on Oct. 1 to begin an improvement endeavor. Our residents have commented on the unsightly median for years. Hopefully this will begin an ongoing effort by ADOT
