The Witt 3 Chandelier, as a combined brainchild of Rockwell Studio and RichBrilliantWilling combines a minimal geometric form with contrasting globe-like organic soft bulbs of light. They challenge the traditional and in a way, deconstruct the idea of what a chandelier is, and what it actually brings to a space. Comprised of five hollow brass cubes, the pieces can be combined in a number of varying combinations and formations. The lines comprise linear cubes in space, and can be combined as a cluster, or as a feature element in a space.Rockwell Studio, based in NYC, is steeped in years of verified experience in the hospitality and retail world. The work they have done has helped shape directions in design and rethinking these spaces and how they function. Taking their hand at industrial design, as a means to combine their knowledge of design and experience, is no surprise. Combining then with lighting masterminds, RBW, is no revelation either. From their own larger scale design historical experience, RBW have utilised what they know, with opportunities in the market for design solutions in lighting design.Suspended by ultra-thin cables, the piece sits as a floating element in space. The intended subtleties are therefore emphasised by its seemingly floating nature. Suspended and subtle, yet incredibly impactful.

Borromeo de Silva thought about this canoe as a unique piece. It was drawn to the idea of the luxury object being sufficient on its own: that doesn’t exist merely to solve a problem but is justified by its visual proposition. With its canoe, it wanted to showcase our ability to mix traditional craftsmanship and highly technical processes and materials. The hull of the Monocoque Paddle Canoe by Borromeo de Silva is made of a combination of copper-woven carbon fiber and classic teak wood. The copper wire weaved in the carbon gives depth to the texture and shimmers under the sunlight making the surfaces come alive, mimicking the shimmering sun reflecting on the water a canoe that is poetic in its making, yet technically strong, durable and light. This project encapsulates a lot of the values Borromeo de Silva stands for: technology that serves beauty, collaboration in between industries and sharp aesthetics.

Hovering between conceptual art and functional design, Los Angeles-based artist Eddy Sykes creates unique and unexpected objects. Playful and exacting, his work makes expert use of a startling array of materials and fabrication techniques. Trained as an architect with an emphasis in engineering, he has had numerous public and private art commissions as well as solo exhibitions. Made entirely of bronze and marble, Scaffold is simultaneously an homage to the unsung hero of sculptural and architectural infrastructure, and a satirical take on luxury dining. True to the original engineering intent of traditional scaffold systems, the table’s marble platforms and solid bronze rails provide compression and tension to the frame.

London Carpenters Workshop Gallery recently hosted an exhibition of Australian designer Charles Trevelyan’s work, showing the full range of his oeuvre. Comprising both retrospective and new work, Aspects spotlights Trevelyan’s close collaboration with the gallery over the last ten years.Trevelyan’s ‘patination fascination’ is seen across his ‘stance’, ‘tripartite’, and ‘supine’ series. The designer worked alongside a team of artisans at Carpenters Workshop Gallery’s roissy center, using a time-intensive technique known as patination to create a distinct finishing on the objects. The process involves painting chemicals onto the surface of bronze and quickly applying a blowtorch. Together with the strong heat, the chemical combination completely alters the appearance of the bronze surface, creating a variety of colors and textures that Trevelyan adopts across his work.

New York based Galerie Lelong & Co. presents Torn, a solo exhibition of new and recent work by German artist Ursula von Rydingsvard.Celebrated for her large-scale sculptures in public spaces and museums in the United States and abroad, von Rydingsvard’s exhibition contains works built from experimentation in cedar, paper, bronze, and resin. The risk and vulnerability von Rydingsvard describes are evident in all the works on view. Movement, intensity, and fierceness link the disparate forms together. Two new wall works harness a sense of movement and sentience that evoke a visceral bodily or animal form: Nester seems to scale the wall that anchors it, dramatically arching away and returning in one fluid motion. The second, DWA, is composed of two asymmetrical halves, almost animal-like in its attachment and repulsion to the wall. A third monumental relief sculpture is Oziksien; its cavities begin as shy burrows and end with a palpable ferocity as it encroaches the floor.

Finnish designer Vesa Nilsson wanted to design a lamp that fits homes, cafes and restaurants. She chosen to use heavy cast bronze to highlight the lightness of Oled. The name of the lamp “Ruutu” means windowpane in Finnish language. Oled light reminds natural light more than any other artificial light source.Bronze also gives a valuable and timeless look for the lamp. The centrepiece can hold 4 panels at a time to give enough light. Both 100mm and 140mm panels will fit in one and same centrepiece. Electrical connections are embedded in the centrepiece to make Oled panels easy to install. If needed, a lightweight plastic frame can be added to protect the panels.

Over the past few years, South Korea has seen a rise in international popularity for their cosmetics and meticulous skincare industry. Many companies have used distinctive retail interiors and branding to visually attract customers and recognition into the array of stores especially in Seoul. Recently, Korean beauty brand ‘Sulwhasoo’ charged designer-duo Neri & Hu to realize their flagship branch located in the capital city’s Gangnam district.Set on a corner site and rising at five-storeys, the store not only showcases their diverse selection of skincare products but hosts two spas. The retail space is defined by a continuous and slender grid construction of brass filaments influenced by the lantern; by celebrating the heritage of Sulwhasoo, the design brought to life connections to asian culture and traditions. The change in material and color is apparent. The basement spa is wrapped with dark brick walls, earthy grey stone treatment rooms and warm crafted wood floors producing a sense of intimacy and shelter.

Morie Nishimura’s works have a neutrality that neither dedicates themselves entirely to utility, nor distance themselves as some untouchable art object. He is able to create something for which we feel gratitude, a sense of sympathy, to the artifacts in abundance around us. The mirrors are imbued with a quality peculiar to brass. like bivalve shellfish they open and close, changing not only their own form, but the appearance of the world reflected in them. As the material oxidizes gradually, losing its brilliance, the user finds him or herself forced to polish its surface continually. The mirrors force the viewer into an active position of care. however, an accidental touch will eventually start to deteriorate the work, leaving the only acceptable gesture to be mediated by cloth. Much like a needle, the user is prevented from having relaxed feelings toward the objects, creating a sense of respect.

The two dimensional geometric elements which are used to create each lamp which comprise Kyouei Design studio‘s ‘Dish of Light’ collection, offer an abstract aesthetic to what at first might not seem like a lighting object. The group of four pieces unambiguously named A,B,C and D are each composed of similar components – central circular shapes which are arranged in combination with more quadrilateral sections – resulting in minimalist sculptural designs. The disc-like shades of each light rotate, allowing the user to control the intensity of the luminescence. The two dishes placed perpendicularly to one another in ‘Dish of Light C’ in order to reflect and/or shade light off of a rectangular board which is placed directly in front of it. This piece maintains a balance to the overall form of the lamp, the disc-like shade portion rotating and changing direction freely.

In his practice, Mexican artist Edgar Orlaineta focuses on hybrid sculptural forms that draw inspiration from modernism, popular culture, and specific historic moments. Orlaineta primarily explores post-war design and architecture that generally depicted biomorphic shapes owing to strong surrealist influence. In his original works Orlaineta questions the symbolic and economic value of industrial design objects, which began as mass produced products and later evolved into coveted collectors items, by either incorporating craft elements or combing them into assemblages with every day objects that lack any historical relevance. In his interventions and assemblages, Orlaineta seeks to open these design objects to new perspectives through denial of their functionality, historical or cult value in order to reactivate the legacy of the historical avant-garde.This series of brass and wood sculptures departs from Alvin Lustig’s book jackets for New Directions books, the sculptures are non-literal interpretations of the original designs and the books contents, every sculpture features an original book design by Alvin Lustig in the late 40s and early 50s.
