CELEBRATING LLUÍS LLEÓ
OPENING!
FRIDAY
May 5
7:00 - 8.30 pm
Through Tuesday, May 9
ICNY Members by Invitation Only
The exhibition showcases a series of work made in the past months, centered around the
Park Avenue installation, which are being shown for the first time. They include big format
paper, paintings, drawings and sketches, models and some diaries the artist wrote in to
help define the work, resulting in a piece that searches for a consensus between elements
that would seem opposite to each other: Lyricism and forcefulness, order and chaos,
presence and transparence, tradition and vanguard. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet the
artist in the Gallery of the Instituto Cervantes!
caos, presencia y transparencia, tradición y vanguardia. No te pierdas este encuentro con
LLuís Lleó en la Galería del Instituto Cervantes.
PUBLIC ART: SCULPTURE
MORPHO'S NEST BY LLUÍS LLEÓ CADMIUM HOUSE, PARK AVENUE
The sculptures, five carved and painted blocks of sandstone from the Spanish province of
Girona, that Lluis Lleó displays in the renowned Park Avenue, are, on one hand, the shelter
and safeguard of the fragile, delicate and fleeting, and on the other hand, the symbol of a
place where the dreams that we all have can nest. Lleó’s dream is to prevent painting from
dying, to take it out of the studio, to have it soak in rain and dry in the sun, let the spring
breeze caress it and make it come to life.

OJOS PROPIOS provides an extensive overview of eight years’ work with
communities in Peru and Peruvians in New York. The exhibition highlights the
processes of cultural mix and integration on every level. The photographs bear

create a self-portrait of a nation beyond its borders.

EXHIBITION: PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO ART
ARRAIGADOS BY PIERRE GONNORD
OPENING!

Through June 21
Pierre Gonnord’s portraits celebrate with temperance and force the dignity of the human
condition. They invite us to connect to this common human understanding through the
faces of Asturian miners.
The images are in line with the history of portraiture that focuses on the representation of
psychology and identity. Pierre Gonnord reminds us of the paths previously taken by
photographers such as Thomas Struth, Wolgang Tillmans or Rineke Dijstra. In this fashion,
Gonnord’s portraits manage to showcase the greatness of being, of individuals, and of their
social and cultural construction.
Curated by Carmen Fernández Ortiz.
social y cultural.
Comisariada por Carmen Fernández Ortiz.

The panelists will address the challenges faced by Spanish architects when working
in the United States. The understanding of the architect’s role in each country
influences the process of creation, design, and execution of an architectural project.
What work does an architect do in Spain as opposed to the United States? Is there
an intrinsic relationship between art and architecture? How is this relationship
translated into the practice of architecture?

The Hispanic origin, together with the Anglo-Saxon, Amerindian and African roots, is a
founding part of the American society and its identity. Since the 16th century, Hispanics
have settled across the North American land, from California to Florida, establishing the
basis of what would become the world’s most powerful country. In this conversation we will
debate and reflect on the meaning of speaking Spanish today, about the power of language
and its connotations. Do some people believe language to be a threat for social stability?
What are the current opportunities for the Spanish language and how can we make the
most of them?

In the 1930s, photographers Robert Capa and Gerda Taro risked their lives to
capture images from the front lines of the Spanish Civil War. These photographs
were published in magazines and shown in newsreels around the world, giving

photojournalism. Today, images of war continue to foster a connection between the
conflict and the viewers, which would not be possible otherwise.

The transatlantic critique started at Brown University in 1995. Through seven international
conferences at Brown and others in Cambridge, Puerto Rico, Madrid, Havana, Lima and
Santiago de Chile, the model of rearticulatory reading, propitiated by the transatlantic
repositioning, defined an open and pluralistic critical practice, which refuses the canon, the
will of truth, and the exclusion policies.
For the 2017 edition, Nueva York Transatlántico takes over and continues the journey to
propose the articulation of the various dimensions of Hispanic culture and writing in the city
that defined Martí and Lorca. New York City is home to linguistic varieties of Spanish from
everywhere which testifies to creativity, a capability of humanizing the opposing space, and
of its capacity to forge an academic and cultural environment both anti-authoritarian and
hospitable.
SERIE: TRANSATLANTIC NEW YORK

From his transatlantic viewpoint in New York, the Cuban poet, journalist and revolutionary
José Martí (1853 - 1895) developed an alternative vision of the history and culture of the
New World in order to help construct a future global equality. Diving into the great cultural
theories of the Caribbean, this conference will focus on the dynamics and challenges
between modernism and postmodernism, between a single narrative and a multitude of
different viewpoints, between the world literature (or universal literature) and the world’s
literatures; all in the context of the 21st century artistic movements – between Front Street
and Wall Street.
futuro equilibrio a nivel mundial.

In this round table our guests will discuss the influx of new technologies and alternative
media, modes and paradigms. The Information Society gives rise to a new digital network
civilization. Participatory journalism and the rise of blogging, the boom of social networks,
all contribute to the current crisis in traditional journalism. The situation compels us to
rethink journalism and business models that could be better adapted to the demands of
our digital age.

GRAVITATIONAL WAVES
HOW THE UNIVERSE SOUNDS
BY ALICIA SINTES WEDNESDAY
APRIL, 26 7 pm
FREE ADMISSION
In Spanish
A hundred years ago Albert Einstein postulated the Theory of General Relativity, from
which the physicist suggested the idea of gravitational waves. Einstein’s old dream
was confirmed in 2016 by more than a thousand scientists from fifteen different
countries participating in the Advanced LIGO Program, and among them, the Spanish
scientist Alicia Sintes.
The detection of these gravitational waves will allow us to expand our knowledge of
some of the most rare and violent phenomena of the cosmos, such as black hole
collisions, supernova explosions, gamma rays or the Big Bang itself. We will be able to
know what happened when the universe was created.
Do not miss this opportunity to hear the main scholar on the Relativity and
Gravitational Group from the Universitat de les Illes Balears, and the only Spanish
member of the Advanced LIGO Program.

The difficulty of maintaining a work-home balance has traditionally affected women more
than men, and has resulted in women tending to prioritize family over career aspirations.
We invite five prestigious scientists at different stages in their careers to talk about how
they balance work and family life and to brainstorm possible solutions at the individual,
institutional, and systemic levels.

Since the 20th century, migration movements have been exposing the painful reality of thousands of people who must flee their homes for survival or prospects of a better life. The “Imagined Geography” cycle, curated by David Varela, displays a path through some of these episodes.

Inequality and power struggles arise when working in a foreign land. When one leaves a
family and a home behind, one inevitably detaches from the original roots, resulting in a
loss of identity. These are the main themes in En otra casa and Notes sur l’émigration, two
parallel realities with a 45 year difference. A mirror in which we see ourselves.

WINE TANSTING SEMINARS BY HELIO SAN MIGUEL
$95
6-9 pm
01. THE SILK ROAD (Thursday, April 6)
Few wine experiences match the intoxicating aroma of finely aged wines. Ethereal, silky and
perfumed, their superb delicacy makes them immediately appealing and sometimes
deceivingly evolved, yet a few years, or even decades of patience will offer sure reward. This
seminar is devoted to aged, reserva, gran reserva and old fortified wines –an elating
experience for the initiated connoisseur, and an uncharted territory for those who rarely
venture beyond fruit and tannins.
02. THE PERFECT YEAR: 2005 (Thursday, April 13)
2005 was heralded in Bordeaux as superior to even 2000, and in Rioja as better than
2001 and 2004. Much like 1995, 2005 has shaped up as a very fine year in many major
wine regions. In this tasting seminar we will assess the evolution of this extraordinary
vintage.
03. A MARVERLOUS QUARTET: 2009 TO 2012 (Thursday, April 20)
The string of harvests from 2009 to 2012 represents the first time in the history of the
wines of Spain in which four consecutive years delivered very good to outstanding vintages
in most of the top wine regions in the country. In previous seasons we have individually
examined each of them, so now it’s the right time for a comparison between these four
promising vintages.
04. SUPERDUEROS (Thursday, April 27)
The banks of the Duero River are home to the prestigious Ribera del Duero and Toro wine
appellations. However, led by the astonishing quality and success of Mariano García’s
Mauro wines, a growing number of wineries and winemakers –including stars like Peter
Sisseck, Alejandro Fernández and Abadía Retuerta— started crafting high quality wines
outside these wine regions, in a similar fashion to Italian winemakers who made
groundbreaking Supertuscan wines disregarding traditional appellations’ rules decades
ago. In this seminar we will taste the best of these new non-D.O. Castilian wines, and
compare them with stars from Ribera del Duero, Toro and Rioja.
05. THE ULTIMATE TEMPRANILLO TASTING (Thursday, May 4)
Rioja reds established the benchmark of Tempranillo for over a century. Then Ribera del
Duero burst into the spotlight with majestic, age-worthy, tannic yet silky wines. In the last
twenty years, the new Toro wines have stormed into the market with opulent and powerful
reds. In this seminar we will blind taste wines from these regions to compare and evaluate
their styles.
06. 2014: A TREMENDOUS VINTAGE (Thursday, May 11)
2014 is a tremendous vintage, a huge vintage, a year that can be compared to any great
vintage of the past. The wines are beautiful, very beautiful, very balanced and built for
aging. When a vintage is good, winemakers are rarely short of Trumpian-style superlatives,
and this is the case with 2014. In this tasting we will take a first look at this promising year.
07. ALTERNATIVE WINE FACTS (Thursday, May 18)
Is wine a natural or a manufactured product? Is terroir a myth or an unquestionable
reality? Is an outstanding vintage necessary for a truly great wine? Should mixing
vintages be allowed? Can we drink white wine with meat? What about Sherry with
steak? In this provocative tasting seminar we will discuss the validity of many wine
notions that have been assumed to be true for decades and even centuries.
08. THE NORTH STAR: FOCUS ON MENCÍA (Thursday, June 1)
In the northwestern corner of Spain white grapes like Albariño and Godello shine. But since
the late 1990s, the rediscovery of the old Mencía vines has enticed leading winemakers
such as Alvaro Palacios, Mariano García and Raúl Pérez, who soon put on the world wine
map the remote and mountainous Bierzo area and the scenic region of Ribeira Sacra along
the Sil River. Their top wines, with distinctive minerality and still untapped potential, have
gone in just over a decade from being almost unknown to producing unique reds that have
even elicited comparisons with Guigal’s famous Cote Rôties. They have also added diversity
to Spain’s wine landscape and captivated demanding American critics. This seminar is
devoted to these distinctive wines, some of which have achieved cult status in record time
and are available only in minuscule quantities.
09. THE GREAT WHITE WAY (Thursday, June 8)
Of all the wines of Spain, the whites are undergoing the most dramatic
transformation. Grapes like Albariño from Rías Baixas, Godello from Bierzo and
Valdeorras, and Verdejo from Rueda are leading the way. But there are also new
white riojas, and ambitious xarelos in Catalonia, as well as outstanding wines made
with other recovered or foreign varieties. In this seminar we will blind taste some of
the best white wines of Spain against a selection of great foreign ones.
10. ENOMAKASE III (Thursday, June 15)
Borrowing from the Japanese concept of omakase (to entrust), two years ago we
coined the term enomakase for our final seminar, where we offered an undisclosed
selection of wines served in a specific order to illustrate the sheer diversity of
regions, grapes and wine styles of Spain. That tasting was a huge success and we
repeated it again in June 2016. To continue with this tradition and close another
great wine year, we present the third iteration of our enomakase tasting seminar,
featuring a selection of both traditional and modern wines to surprise and enlighten
you about the quality and variety of the wines of Spain.
