The Difference AffirmationMade in My LifeI love finding kind messages in unexpected places Whether

itrsquos a message written on the sidewalk or a hand-written

note left behind on a mirror for a stranger to find I think the

world needs more moments of kindness that make us pause

to consider all that we have in the midst of our busy daysmdash moments that draw us out of our routines and into our

hearts Recently I was in New York City and I spotted an old

abandoned billboard upon which someone had spray painte

the words ldquobless yourselfrdquoAs I passed by the sign in my taxi

hurrying to my next appointment reading those words quick

re-centered me and reminded me of whatrsquos important in life

AN ARTISTIC BEGINNING

A S A C H I L D G R O W I N G U P in Seoul Korea Jenny Doh was surrounded by a family filled with creative women who

were never without their yarn and knitting needles ldquoMyfamily didnrsquot own a car and all of my aunties had bags thatthey would carr y onto the bus with themrdquo says Jenny ldquoAt

the top of each bag was always a ball of yarnmdashthey wereconstantly knitting or crocheting everywhere they went and

thatrsquos something that really made an impression on me whenI was growing uprdquo

Jennyrsquos fascination with knitting would become a sourceof comfort as her family emigrated from Korea to the United

States when she was only 7 years old It was on the plane rideto America that she found herself holding on tight to her

yarn and needles ldquoAs I sat on that plane feeling very scared

I told myself that as long as I could knit I would be OKrdquo

says Jenny Unable to speak English and unacquainted with American culture knitting provided her with much needed

comfort and familiarity during her journey

she was going to read one report aloud that had really touchedherrdquo shares Jenny ldquoTe moment when I realized that it wasmy report that she was reading I felt validated as a writerrdquo

Listen To Your ChildrenSometimes indirect conversations are when children

open up most In the car when you pick them up

from school put on some music and allow them to

naturally share

When your kids offer information donrsquot give advice

unless they ask for it

Listen and repeat some of what they say to show them

that they are being heard

Create with them Knit together on the couch Paint

together in the studio Cook together in the kitchen

Let them talk and feel safe
