Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol was a Pop Artist.
He used a technique called
screen printing to create lots of
prints that look the same.
He often changed the colours of
the pictures.
Making Patterns
Andy Warhol often
used very bright
colours in his work.
He used repeated
images to make
patterns.
Using Colour
What do you notice about
the colours in this portrait
of Marilyn Monroe?
Repeating Images
Andy Warhol used repeated images of famous people in
different colours to create some of his most famous portraits.
Campbell’s soup!
An important event was the 1964 exhibit The American Supermarket. The show was presented as a typical U.S. small supermarket, except that everything in it—from the produce, canned goods, meat, posters on the wall, etc.—was created by six pop artists of the time.
The exhibit was one of the first big events that introduced people to pop art.
A 1964 Large Campbell's Soup Can was sold in a 2007 auction to a South American collector for £5.1 million!
Let’s look at some examples of Andy Warhol’s work. What do you think about them?
Can you think of three adjectives to describe his work?
Andy Warhol Today
If Andy Warhol was alive today…
How about
a portrait
of…
Who do you think would be a
good famous person for him
to make a portrait of?
Why?
Your TaskUsing inspiration from Andy Warhol’s art, create your own piece of art based on the famous American that you have been researching for your biography. Have a look at the next slide for examples!
You could:• Print off a picture of the famous person in black and white and colour over it in sections of bright
colours (you could use pens, paints, pastels…anything you have available).• Print off more than one black and white picture of them, so you can do a repeated piece of art, like
Andy’s famous Marilyn Monroe pictures. Then colour in different bright colours.• Find a picture of your famous person and draw/copy it. Then colour different sections of it in bright
colours.• If you find it tricky to draw people and you cannot print, you could draw something associated with
your famous person and colour it in bright colours (for example, if you had chosen Elvis, you could draw a guitar, or if you had chosen Donald Trump you could do the American flag etc).
