When someone has a life-limiting illness it can be a devastating experience for everyone involved. Many people find themselves overwhelmed by the intensity of their emotions and might not want to burden those around them with their concerns.

Art Therapy offers an opportunity to express these feelings. Through the use of art materials, in the safety of a supportive environment, thoughts and feelings that may be too intense or painful to put into words can find release.

What are the benefits? In keeping with the holistic approach of North London Hospice, Art Therapy complements the work of other disciplines and can help in a number of ways by:

• Increasing feelings of relaxation

• Easing physical and emotional pain

• Giving ways of expressing and dealing with emotions

• Helping to discover personal resources for coping with situations such as pain, fear, anxiety, changing body image

• Helping to communicate issues that may be hard to explain

What happens in an Art Therapy session? You will be encouraged to ‘make a mark’ and ‘have a go’, using different materials, including pencil, paint, clay and charcoal. No special skills or previous experience are needed. Nothing is wrong or inadequate in Art Therapy.

Art Therapy can take place in groups of four or five people, where participants can find support from others and share experiences and insights. Art Therapy is also offered on a one-to-one basis, if preferred.

An Art Therapist is on-hand to offer encouragement and support, helping you to explore and reflect upon your work.
