ABOUT ARTARIAArtaria Editions was founded in 1995 with the express purpose of exploring the music of major contemporaries of Haydn,Mozart and Beethoven. It was an ambitious undertaking, given theobscurityofmanyofthecomposerswechosetochampion,andseventeenyearsonitisintenselysatisfyingtoseetheextenttowhichoureffortshavebeenrecognized.Everyyearseesanincreasein the number of performances of our works worldwide as individuals and orchestras discover for themselves the richness and diversity of the unknown 18th century. Much of the stimulus for this isgeneratedbytheextraordinaryandcontinuingsuccessoftherecordingsmadebyouraffiliateNaxos. On three occasions Naxos has won the coveted “Best 18th-century Orchestral Recording” prizeattheCannesClassicalAwardsandin2002wasafinalistintwocategories.InJanuary2012Artaria Editions and Naxos were awarded the International Domenico Cimarosa Prize in theMusic Publishing and Recording categories at a special ceremony held in at the Teatro Domenico CimarosainAversa,Italy.Theseawardshighlighttheuniqueassociationofpublishinghouseandrecording label that isnotonly responsible for thecreationofan invaluablehistorical resource,but it is also broadening our understanding and appreciation of this critically important period in musical history.

Beingyoung,energeticandambitious,ArtariaEditionsisconstantlyseekingtoexpanditsmusicalhorizons. From concentrating at first on symphonies and concertos we now have a growingcatalogue of chamber works and sacred music. We have also begun to explore music of the early 19th century and in 2011 we completed the recording of the complete works for piano and orchestrabyFerdinandRies,themostambitiousprojectwehaveundertakentodate.Thefinalthreeworks- theConcertos inEflat,Op.144andGminor,Op.177,andtheIntroductionetRondeaubrillant,Op.144willbepublishedtowardstheendoftheyear.Theseworkswillalsobeavailablein Study Editions for piano duet. Another major milestone is the publication of one of Cimarosa1s mostsuccessfuloperas,L1impresarioinangustie,editedbytheItalianCimarosascholarSimonePerugini. Dr Perugini1s editions of a new series of overtures by Cimarosa are also in press and are expected to be published before the end of the year.

Likemostofhiscontemporaries,FerdinandRieswasaprolificcomposerofvariations,polonaisesand other small-scale works for piano or piano and solo instrument. Intended primarily for the cultivatedamateur, theseworkswerecomposedwith thecareonewouldexpect froma formerpupilofBeethovenandaboundinattractivemelodicideasandbrilliantinstrumentalwriting.The Variations for Pianoforte & Flute on a Portuguese Hymn was composed in 1826 and published two years later in London. The theme is the famous hymn Adeste Fideles which Ries’s English public would have known as O Come, All Ye Faithful,aneighteenth-centuryhymn,nowassociatedwithChristmas,thatisgenerallybelievedtohavebeencomposedbyJFWade(1710-1786).AswithallRies’sworksforflute,theSonate Sentimentaleisexceptionallywellwrittenfortheinstrumentandyetperhaps even more impressive is the way in which Ries balances the musical texture and exploits the full potential of both the flute andpiano. The Sonata,Op.87 is a less ambitiouswork thanthe more famous Sonate Sentimentale,Op.169(AE441)butitisfullofcharmandhighspirits.TheIntroduction and Polonaise,Op.119isacaptivatingworkthatattimespossessesexpressivepowerbelied by its origins in dance.

François Devienne, one of the leading flute virtuosi of his generation, was also a prolific andsuccessful composer particularly of works for wind instruments. Unsurprisingly, he wrote animportantcorpusofmusicforfluteincludingadozenfluteconcertosallofwhichwerepublishedin his lifetime. The six works offered here are characteristic of Devienne’s style, elegant andapproachable yet challenging enough technically to be rewarding to the most experienced player.
