Principal’s Message

HSC Visual Arts Success

ARTEXPRESS is an annual series of exhibitions of

exemplary artworks created by New South Wales

Visual Arts students for the Higher School Certificate

examination. Many of the practical HSC courses have

similar showcase events each year, such as Shape

(Design and Technology), Callback (Dance), Encore

(Music), InTech (Industrial Technology), OnSTAGE

(Drama) and Texstyle (Textiles and Design). The

standard of student work is extremely high, belying the

age and experience of the those selected to exhibit or

perform.

Year 12 student Topaz Eaton has been honoured by

selection in ARTEXPRESS this year. Her body of work

(or major project as some may relate to it) is the

product of twelve month’s conceptualisation, execution

and refinement. Mrs Michele Anuyahong should be

justly proud of herself and her class. All of her Year 12

students created fine works worthy of public display.

The school will be holding an exhibition of student art

at the Batemans Bay Tourist Information Centre in the

last two weeks of term. More information will be

provided soon.

A selection from Topaz’s body of work will be on

display at the The Amory in Sydney Olympic Park.

Further details will be publicised by BOSTES and you

can view examples of work from previous years on the

ARTEXPRESS website at:

www.artexpress.artsunit.nsw.edu.au.

Aboriginal Learning Centre

Our school has been selected as one of only four

schools across the state to establish and trial an

Aboriginal Learning Centre. This initiative aims to

provide academic and cultural support to enhance the

achievement of Aboriginal students while improving

engagement, attendance, retention and HSC

attainment. It follows on from the success of our Norta

Norta and 3Rs programs which achieved significant

and measurable outcomes. It is an exciting opportunity

and recognition that the school is actually making a

difference and not simply delivering a “feel-good”

curriculum.

School Planning and Evaluation

2017 represents the fourth year of additional

Gonski/NERA funding to NSW public schools through

the Resource Allocation Model methodology. The

school has received its planned budget allocation for

2017, part of which is reported on the Local School,

Local Decisions website. The figure reported is a little

misleading as it incorporates fixed salary costs for

specialist staff already employed at the school by the

Department. The school’s flexible equity funding has

increased to just over $600,000 which is slightly offset

by a decrease in funding for other costs (such as

utilities) and the removal of some specific purpose

funding (for computers, for example). Nevertheless, the

school is in a better financial position than it has ever

been and is able to adequately resource all its

educational programs.

Most of this year’s programs will roll over into next

year, including the Hands On Learning initiative, the

employment of Deputy Principal Learning Support and

the provision of more interactive classrooms hardware.

Some of the new strategies to be implemented are a

Community of Schools concert band, the

commencement of Quality Teaching Rounds (an

effective and proven method of improving teacher

quality) and the employment of a school business

manager. The commitment of school funding to an

additional administrative position may raise a few

eyebrows, but the underlying philosophy is simple –

teachers should be free to concentrate on doing what

they do best, that is, teach. A business manager will

Page 4: ARTEXPRESS - batemansba-h.schools.nsw.gov.au

return periods to the curriculum with the equivalent of

three elective classes freed to put teachers back in

front of classrooms.

2017 is the also last year of the current school plan. A

review and evaluation of this year’s programs will take

place late 2016 or early 2017 and I am working closely

with the P&C to develop new and authentic methods

to involve parents in this process. Please contact me at

any time if you would like to discuss any aspect of the

planning and evaluation cycle.

Last Weeks of Term

There are many variations to the regular routine in the

last few weeks of school, including several assemblies

and rewards excursions. However, three weeks is nearly

10% of the school year and despite most formal

assessment drawing to a conclusion, there is still plenty

of meaningful work to be done. Year 12 has left which

implies that all students remaining at school will be

continuing their secondary education in 2017. The

knowledge and skills gained now are just as relevant as

those gained in Term 1.

It is my clear expectation that students are engaged in

learning right up until the last day. The last few weeks

are not a movie marathon as some parents believe,

although the odd student might convey this

impression in an attempt to procure an early start to

the holidays. If parents do have concerns surrounding

the nature of classwork at any time, I encourage them

to start a conversation with class teachers and head

teachers if appropriate.

The last day of school, Friday 16 December, is set aside

for our traditional Battle of the Seniors contest, where

staff and students will challenge each other in a series

of physical and sporting encounters.

Dancing for Cancer

On a personal note, I would like to thank everyone who

supported the inaugural “Stars of Eurobodalla” Cancer

Council fundraiser. Over $21,000 was raised and a

great time was had by all involved. Congratulations to

Matthew Burgess, the worthy winner with a polished

and entertaining tango choreographed by dance

partner and former Batemans Bay High School student

Paige Davies. Talent is obviously in his genes, as his

daughters Kirby and Ashley, also former students,

have gone on to professional performing careers. Kirby

recently played the lead role of Baby in the musical

Dirty Dancing.

Principal

Student Achievement

Emily Dickinson Year 8

Emily consistently sets high standards for herself and

rarely fails to achieve them. She has 100% attendance

this year, has been recognised for her work across all

subject areas with outstanding work in Mathematics

and, most of all, always displays a positive attitude.

A Message From the Deputies

Welcome to the Week 8 Deputy Principal’s report.

Over the next few weeks, we will be engaging in

several end of year and extra-curricular activities. Our

annual Student Achievement Program recognition

assembly will be run by Mr Gerard O’Keeffe (HT

Science/Wellbeing Coordinator) on Thursday,

1 December. This program acknowledges student

achievement in all aspects of school life. Students

accumulate achievement awards in four broad areas

which include academic success, school service,

cultural initiative and sport.

Another successful initiative that will be run is Peer

Support training for our Year 9 students so that they

are able to help with the orientation of our Year 7

students in 2017. All students will undertake the

training and will have an opportunity to be Peer

Support leaders next year. Staff have been trained to

implement the program. Ms Keryl Davie (Year 9

Student Advisor) and Ms Anica Koprivec (Year 7

Student Advisor 2017) along with Mr O’Keeffe and

Mrs Kelly Cameron, will run the training days.

Learning

This fortnight, we will revisit one of our core values –

be responsible. The focus will be on using mobile

devices in an appropriate manner in the classroom and

in social situations.

The DoE policy states that, ‘Schools, in consultation

with their communities, can allow students to bring

their own personal mobile electronic devices to school

for the purpose of learning’.

Schools are in a position to harness students’

connection to their own personal mobile devices for

the purpose of developing 21st century learning skills

and for fostering digital literacy, fluency and citizenship

in a safe environment; however, the student is

responsible for abiding by the school’s policy and the

department’s Online Communication-Acceptable

Usage for School Students.

Our school practices reflect this and therefore mobile

phone use in the classroom should ONLY occur if

directed and permitted by the classroom teacher to

enhance an understanding of the course content.

Students are reminded that they need to keep mobile

devices safely stored in bags during a lesson and if

devices are being used and have a negative impact on

learning, they will be required to put them away.

Mobile devices are the responsibility of the individual.

Students are also required to take ownership of their

behaviour with regards to using social media.

School

Something to consider from current research;

Current research shows that students who do

not use their mobile phones scored higher on

tests, were better at taking notes and

remembered more information than those

who did use their mobile devices.

Secondly – when students used mobile devices

for educational purposes in the classroom they

scored higher than those who were using

phones for random posting and messaging.

National Communication Association, Communication

Currents articles

This research reinforces our schools practice of

ensuring mobile devices are not used in class unless

directed by the class teacher.

Exploring Early Childhood

On Wednesday, 2 November, Year 11 and 12 Exploring

Early Childhood classes had a visit from some mothers

and babies. Here are comments from the class:

It was a very fun day and I enjoyed talking to

all the mums and especially holding the little

baby. Merinda

A wonderful morning. We learnt about

difficulties in labour and working with a child.

We observed the food that the children ate.

Most popular foods were popcorn, yoghurt,

wafers and fruit. We played games with the

children such as catching a balloon. Overall it

was a great morning. Summer

Really enjoyed myself. Courtney

A really good morning, filled with wonderful

mothers and beautiful children. Chloe

Had fun making food and holding the baby.

Had a good time. Brianna

We thank Kiera, Elisa, Jo-Jo and Renee for bringing in

their babies and talking with the class.

SRC Leadership Camp

On Thursday and Friday, 10 and 11 November the SRC

spent two days bonding in beautiful Durras. They

camped under the clouds and stars, and developed

ideas to improve the school environment. The bad

weather did not dampen their spirits or sunburn (for

some), and activities such as kayaking, surfing, stand

up paddle boarding, swimming, cooking, feeding

lorikeets, cave exploring and eating marshmallows

around the camp fire helped the new senior and junior

SRC get to know each other.

Their brainstorming sessions resulted in new ideas

including:

Combating litter

More seating in the playground

Improving personal hygiene in the toilets

EFTPOS in the canteen

They look forward to working on these ideas and many

more throughout the year.

Sport Report for Wednesday Sport

Wednesday afternoon sport has been fantastic this

year. Students have had the opportunity to participate

in a wide range of sports at various venues in the

community. Thank you to all staff that have facilitated

activities, both in school and from outside businesses.

We hope to continue the great relationship we have

with One Life gym and Area 61 as well as progress the

developing relationship we have with Rock on Fitness

and the Sporting Shooters Batemans Bay Branch. Some

see sport as an inconvenience whilst others see it as an

opportunity to excel, socialise and develop skills. Who

do you think gets more out of it?

Mr Rod Hatton, Sports Organiser

GYM

I do gym for sport and it is really good. The teacher

that controls and manages it is Ms Nicholls and she is

really good. The trainers are really on to it and make

you work hard. For the first half of the double, you will

do fitness with a trainer. We do squats, lunges,

burpees, sit-ups, pushups and many more. For the

second part of the double, you get free time. This

includes using exercise machines such as treadmills,

rowing machines, exercise bikes and many more in a

circuit room where we rotate through all the different

machines. Ms Nicholls doesn’t join in on the first half

with the trainer but she goes on the treadmills in the

second half. Although she goes slow, don’t increase

her speed because she will stop it and say you broke it.

It’s a really good sport if you want to get fit and

healthy. After the double, your legs will hurt but it’s all

worth it in the end.

Zoe Vandenbergh, Year 10

Athletics

Exceeding, experiencing and improving accounts to all

areas of school life. Wednesday afternoons, students

were given a choice as to what they would enjoy and

increase their fitness in. This group of aspiring

individuals not only enjoys athletics but they have

come to appreciate the level of skill that is required for

professionals. With help from Mrs Stayte they all hope

to achieve this.

Area 61 Sport

We all travel to Area 61 for Wednesday sport. We all

have a great time breaking a sweat and having fun

together. We spend an hour and a half at Area 61

working out and trying to improve our strength and

stamina.

Walking

Each week students who do walking for sport get to

head out around our school on foot exploring the local

community. They experience different tracks each

week. The have explored the local tracks in residential

reserves, a few hill climbs, beach walks, the marina,

stair climbs, enjoyed the headland lookout and the

close surrounding bush tracks. The students enjoy

spending times with their friends whilst getting fit

without being too strenuous. Walking is ideal for

students of all fitness levels as everyone can participate

equally. Both teachers on walking have enjoyed the

students company and also are very proud of their

excellent behaviour they have displayed in the

community.

CIT Band

On Friday, 18 November music students from the CIT

(Canberra Institute of Technology) visited Batemans

Bay High School. They ran an interactive workshop for

our senior music students, followed by a fantastic

lunch time performance in the upper quad.

CIT offers a range of music courses including

performance, sound production, music business,

technical production and DJ skills. A highlight of the

performance was when some of our music students

performed with CIT. The performance was greatly

appreciated by the students and staff and we hope

they will return again next year.

Engineers Without Borders

Students from Year 9 and 10 Science classes were

privileged to experience a taste of real world

engineering challenges, when they played host to

students from Sydney University on Monday, 21

November.

The University students are members of the “Engineers

without Borders” program, who travel to third world

countries and use their skills to improve the standard

of living for the local people. The engineers group

recently helped people from Cambodia solve their

dependence on burning wood for cooking by setting

up biofuel tanks that use manure to make methane gas

for cooking.

The Year 9 students were given the challenge to build

an artificial leg out of everyday products that were

cheap and available to people from third world

countries. The students were shown how a leg moves

and how it is supported and then they were let loose

to engineer a product that was functional, comfortable

and cheap.

The students enjoyed the interaction with the

university students and were able to ask the students

what they studied at school, university life and how it

differs from school.

It’s in the Bag

This week, our generous staff have been collecting for

the “It’s in the Bag” Christmas Campaign. As you can

see – it’s overflowing out of the box!

Teachers and staff have donated their unused

handbags and filled them with new toiletries to be

given out to a woman experiencing hardship this

Christmas to help make them feel special.

The campaign runs until December 3 and we hope to

fill another box before then.

Thanks to all for the effort so far.

Mrs Chantal Bradshaw, Careers Advisor

Superheroes and Villains

It is not only our senior

students and teachers that

have been researching

heroes and villains for the

Heroes and Villains themed

Seniors v Teachers day! The

MC class has recently been

learning about characters and the conventions of

comic strips in English. After examining the

characteristics of popular super heroes and super

villains, each student created their own hero or villain,

providing in depth information about personality,

background and hideout. Villains created included the

Green Dragon, Deadlock and the Markonator; heroes

included Monk and Voltage. Once this was completed,

the class examined a range of comics, including the

‘funnies’, political comics, popular comics, historical

comics and graphic novels, learning of the conventions

involved in the creation of each. Students are now in

the process of using those conventions to create their

own comic strip based on a plot involving their hero or

villain. Student Jackson Whalen said ‘It has been fun

and I have learnt about the conventions of comic

strips, including onomatopoeia, comic panels, speech

and thought bubbles and also how to create a hero or

villain’.

All of the students deserve to be congratulated on

their commitment to the extended task.
