Preparing of an Articulate Quiz

Typical Length

For each Lecture (typically 20 plus slides) we need to prepare 30-40 questions. A MINIMUM of 30 Questions will be required for this amount of presentation. For each quiz we will asked 10 questions and expect an 80% pass rate.

A video is considered to be the same length as a lecture (about 50 mins to one hour) and hence also 30-40 questions. Instructional designers argue for rather more questions at a ratio of 10 questions in the bank to each one asked. Creativity is a really important ingredient for doing quizzes.

Each year we will add questions. After a couple of course presentations we should aim for 50 questions per lecture.

All questions must eventually have a unique graphic. It will be best just keep a list of websites for where the graphics were found. I am going to subscribe to an image service to download photo heads for quizzes like scientific writing where there is no obvious graphic to use.

Question Types

True/False are generally best avoided and no more than 20% should be included.

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) should not exceed 40% when combined with true/false questions. Consequently out of 40 questions a maximum of 16 will fall in this category.

There are variety of other types of question types, explore how these could be deployed. I like the hot spot approach where you can deliberately include and error or something that does not belong. Students then click on where the problem exists.

Multiple response questions are really tricky so best have no more than 25% allocated to these.

Matching by drag and dropping adds almost a game approach but can really test knowledge.

When preparing “Fill in the Blank” makes sure include singular and plural and also hyphenated and non hyphenated answer. These questions are quite difficult and therefore the Word Banks is an easier means to the same end. The “Fill in the Blank” does test precision in spelling which is important. When filling in a numeric ensure that large numbers have a reasonable range of values so as to accopmodate more than one person’s point of view. If you want a very precise numbers in these questions, indicate the source for the statistic to prevent ambiguity.

Allocating of Marks

The allocation of marks is fairly critical.

Page 3: Articulate Quiz Template - planet.botany.uwc.ac.zaplanet.botany.uwc.ac.za/NISL/NISL_templates/Articulate_…  · Web viewIn Articulate Quiz Maker select Edit and then Colour and

True/False questions should get only 1 mark. The person being tested has a 50% chance of getting the question right by guessing.Multiple choice, word bank, fill in the blank, numeric and hotspot questions are worth 2 marks.Multiple response, matching and sequencing questions are worth 4 or 5 marks.

A kind word of advice

When developing questions avoid repeating yourself. Change the style of presentation to prevent the quizzes becoming tedious.

Generally avoid asking precise figures. Where chronology is important get the quiz-taker to put dates into a sequence. Knowledge structure show better comprehension than knowledge of isolated events. For example in the “evolution of humans” arrange the following hominids in order of increasing brain size. Otherwise ask figures to be matched to event or items.

Quizzes need several iterations and revisions, before they can be deployed. In setting a question it is best to get somebody else to review. Developing electronic questions is a little more difficult. Do not expect to prepare a complete question in only a couple of hours.
