5.2 Ronnie Nelson, RN begins preparing a medication IV bag in a patient
care area on
May 5, 2016, at 1400. Ronnie finishes preparing the sterile medication at
1410, applies a BUD label, proceeds immediately to patient’s bedside and
starts the 2-hour administration. Why did this sterile medication require a
BUD label?
(Multiple Choice, 10 points, 1 attempt permitted)
Correct Choice
Was the medication prepared outside the pharmacy’s clean room?
X The medication took longer than one hour to prepare and initiate administration?
Is the medication not completely and immediately administered?
The medications administration was delayed?
The initiation of the medication administration was delegated to someone other
than the person who prepared it?
Feedback when correct:
That's right! A medication that’s administered by someone other than the person who prepared
it DOES require a BUD label, but the initiation of this medications administration was not
delegated. The questions don't indicate whether another healthcare professional will oversee
the remainder of the administration, but another answer option is more accurate.

Feedback when correct:
That's right! Reviewing the concept: Any sterile medication that is not completely and
immediately administered by the person who prepared it must be labeled with a BUD: initiation
of administration must occur within 1 hour of the time preparation began (in this case, spiking
the bag).
