DESCRIPTION

Over the span of three months while traveling to New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah with the 2011 Land Arts of the American West field program under Texas Tech University, I collected (bagged and tagged) 78 found objects of importance. In this catalog they have been ordered according to size and scaled to give equal importance to each artifact. Follow the chronological diagram at the base of the page to see when an artifact was found in relation to another. Also refer to the map at the end of the catalog for the location of an artifact to get the full artifact journey experience. This catalog is intended to be used in conjunction with the artifact display being exhibited April 1, 2012 at LHUCA Warehouses, 1001 Mac Davis Lane in Lubbock, Texas. If you are currently at the exhibit, thank you for coming and please note the arrangement of the artifacts on the wall align with the chronological diagram at the base of the artifact pages to come.

I acknowledge up front that both the didactic take on what is otherwise considered trash and the method of collection is unique, however there is merit in viewing these objects astutely and learning from the connections they deliver.

The things we leave behind are just as important as the things we choose to hold on to. When I walked into the desert I expected to fi nd a blank slate, a deserted wasteland, a forgotten nothingness. I looked down from a horizon void of verticals and at my feet on the sun baked brown crust I discover a gold 22 caliber cartridge from a rifl e lodged in the ground. Why is this here?

Each artifact such as the cartridge found in the remoteness of the desert, carries with it a story. It begins, like most things do, with questions. Questions of how this object got here. Questions of how the object was used. And certainly questions on the value of the object itself. The story unfolds as one starts to answer these questions which lead towards both a cultural understanding of the person who left the object behind as well as an insight into how the user of the object interpreters his or her surroundings. The story ultimately illuminates the intimate relationship an object has with its user and the larger narrative of the landscape where it was left.

Using the rifl e cartridge again we can start our story using the fi rst question, “Why is this here?” Knowing that a cartridge is the discarded stage of a bullet when fi red out of a rifl e we can, without much doubt, concluded that this object was from someone fi ring a rifl e. We also know that rifl es have the capability of being lethal when fi red. Together we can safely assume that the person using the rifl e who left behind the cartridge, came to this specifi c place for its unique characteristics.

These characteristics were cultivated by both the direct experience of the place by the riffl e shooter and the cultural collective identifi cation and interpretation of the place through mass media and social constructs.

This gives the desert, just like any other landscape, a preconceived defi nition of its character. So the shooter, just as I did when I traveled into the desert for the fi rst time, has a subconscious understanding of what a desert should look like and how it should behave, whether it aligns properly or not to the actual place. It is my opinion that the desert characteristics interpreted by the shooter are that of emptiness, destitute, and desolation. These qualities are ideal for use of a lethal weapon when not wanting to infl ict damage, harm, or be seen by anyone else. In fact due to our frequent travels

Page 6: Artifact

to remote, off the grid, natural places, an abundance of rifl e, shotgun, and pistol cartridges where found. This is primarily due to the location but also the disposable nature and material longevity of the object itself.

We live in a comsumeristic disposable society, meaning that we buy a lot and we throw away a lot. It is only fi tting that the recreational shooter left his or her wasted cartridge in what we generally consider a waste-land. The “we” includes both society, the American general public and the government. The fi rst ever atomic bomb was tested at the Trinity Site, near Alamogordo, New Mexico. This site, similar to a desert landscape, was chosen respectfully for the shared characteristics as our riffl e shooter was looking for.

The desert is a place where everyone goes to get away from everyone.

My own interpretation of the desert was that of a blank canvas. I could go here for freedom. Much like the festivals of Burning Man, Cochella, or the Bonneville Salt Flat races, I thought the desert was a place removed from society and free of obstacles. This proved not to be true. Society did not just have its foot in the door, it was in the room making its presence noticed. Albeit small, such as in the form of a tread pattern from a four wheel drive vehicle or a condensation trail from a jet lingering in the blue sky and not to forget the rifl e cartridge from someone shooting; the presence of human activity in the desert is abundant when observed carefully. Even the blankest of blank canvases have something to offer when looked at hard enough. The texture of the tightly woven fabric, the changing white refl ection intensity with the cycles of environmental light, the particular mistakes, nuances, and defections; all together create a composition as noteworthy as one layered with paint. The desert composition is that of the musical rest or the white space between letters the void that balances the whole. It is also one full of obstacles and harshness, most notably the exposure of the sun and the lack of shelter, water, and food.

It should be noted that there are multiple stories for each artifact such as the rifl e cartridge and my version may differ from yours. I encourage you to create your own story about these objects as if you had discovered them yourself.
