Chair in European Law at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw cordially invites you to the seminar Democracy, the Law and the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence which will take place on 17 April 2018 at 18:30 (Collegium Iuridicum II, room 1.3, Lipowa 4 Street, Warsaw) Speakers: Paul F. Nemitz - Principal Advisor in the Directorate General for Justice and Consumers in the European Commission. He was appointed by the European Commission on 12. April 2017, following a 6 year appointment as Director for Fundamental Rights and Citizen’s Rights in the same Directorate General. As Director, Nemitz led the reform of Data Protection legislation in the EU, the negotiations of the EU – US Privacy Shield and the negotiations with major US Internet Companies of the EU Code of Conduct against incitement to violence and hate speech on the Internet. He is a visiting Professor of Law at the College of Europe in Bruges; Member of the Board of the Verein Gegen Vergessen – Für Demokratie e.V., Berlin; Trustee of the Leo Baeck Institute, New York; Member of the Board of the Association for Accountability and Internet Democracy, AAID, Paris; Member of the Scientific Council of the Foundation for European Progressive Studies, Brussels. He is also a member of the Tönissteiner Kreis e.V., Berlin, the Commission for Media and Internet policy of the SPD, Berlin; the German Association for European Law and the Arbeitskreis Europäische Integration, Heidelberg.

Dr. Sebastian Szymański - Assistant Professor, Artes Liberales Faculty of the University of Warsaw, Techno-Arts Labolatory; Sebastian Szymański graduated from the Individual Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities. In 2014, in the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, he defended his doctoral thesis on evolutionist conceptions of justice. His academic interests include broadening of the questions of ethics to include non-human subjects, such as non-human animals and artificial entities.

Łukasz Kowalczyk - partner in a legal firm with its registered office in Warsaw. As a legal adviser, he holds several years of experience in advising entities from the financial (including fintech), new technologies, IT and medical sectors. Łukasz Kowalczyk conducts a discussion class in the Artes Liberales Faculty of the University of Warsaw, concerning legal matters related to the use of robots in public space. Łukasz Kowalczyk is a lecturer in seminars and trainings regarding compliance as well as new technology, aimed at financial market and IT sector participants.

Moderator:

Dr. hab. Anna Zawidzka-Łojek - associate professor in European law at the Faculty of Law and Administration, University of Warsaw, Head of Chair in European Law and Director of Postgraduate Studies in European Union Law at the Faculty of Law and Administration, University of Warsaw as well as a member of Convocation of the University of London and of Polish Society of European Law. She is a long-standing lecturer in European Union institutional and commercial law at the University of Warsaw. The area of her interests involves the law of the Internal Market of the European Union as well as European anti-discrimination law.

Lecture will be held in English.
