THE SUN: MAIN SOURCE OF ENERGY FOR LIFE ON EARTH

NATURAL PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Photosynthesis is a process used by plants and other organisms to capture the sun's energy to split off water, hydrogen from oxygen.
Chlorophyll is the main pigment of photosynthesis.
Also carotenes, xanthophylls etc are the pigments.

• Almost all plants are photosynthetic autotrophs (self producing), as are some bacteria and protozoas.– Autotrophs generate their own organic matter
through photosynthesis– Sunlight energy is transformed to energy stored in the form of chemical bonds

Artificial photosynthesis:
It is a chemical process that replicates the natural process of photosynthesis.
It refers to design a model for capturing and storing the energy from sunlight in the chemical bonds of a fuel.Design includes:1. A light harvesting molecule,Ruthenium complex.2. Tyrosine, mediating the electron transfer.3. A Manganese complex, sends electron to ruthenium

In the system, there is an oxide layer(for example TiO2) which to allow for electronic conduction to take place.
The material of oxide layer is attached to a monolayer of the charge transfer dye.
Photo excitation of the dye results in the injection of an electron into the conduction band of the oxide.
Usually the iodide/triiodide couple restors the original state of the dye
