BOMBAY SAPPHIRE
Year two of the Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series had many high points in its search
to find the next big names in Visual Arts. With over 3000 submissions nationwide,
20 finalists were flown to Miami during Art Basel to display their artwork and be
crowned the winner of the 2011 competition.
In partnership with Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, Bombay Sapphire
provided a platform for these imaginative artists to showcase and sell their work
to the international art elite, galleries, curators and art buyers. Two winners were
selected by a panel of judges to receive their own exhibit at Rush Arts Gallery in
New York.

Andre Guichard, artist, curator, and co-owner of Gallery Guichard Fine Art Gallery in
Chicago, has had the privilege of being exposed to art through the eyes of his father who
painted throughout his childhood. He was also influenced by his cousin, William Dawson:
a late, great outsider artist.
Guichard has been painting professionally for twenty years. His works can be found
in over 1000 corporate and private collections nationally and internationally, including
a special accolade in 2008 when he created an original ornament for the White House
Christmas Tree.
In 2010, Guichard was selected to be the National Curator and spokesperson for the
Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series in partnership with the Rush Philanthropic Foundation.
His dynamic national relationships, understanding of art’s technical aspects and his ability
to see beyond the image have held Guichard in high regard amongst his peers and master
artists.

of hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons, and rapper Joseph Simmons (“Reverend
Run” of Run DMC), he is the founder and President of the Rush Arts Gallery.
Along with his brother Russell, Simmons established Def Poetry Jam, which has
enjoyed long-running success on HBO. Simmons is also the founder and Vice-

Three Days As The Crow Flies, a fictional account of the 1980’s New York art scene.
He has also written a book of artwork and poetry called I Dreamed My People Were
Calling But I Couldn’t Find My Way Home.
Simmons is the son of Daniel Simmons, Sr., a truant officer and black history
professor who also wrote poetry, and Evelyn Simmons, a teacher who painted as a
hobby. He earned a degree in social work from New York University, and a master’s
in public finance from Long Island University. He began painting after he realized
how much he hated his job with the Bureau of Child Support.
Chase Manhattan Bank, the United Nations, and the Schomburg Center for
Research in Black Culture all show Simmons’ work as part of their collections.
He is also an avid collector of African art, as well as comic books.

S. ROSS BROwNE wASHINGTON, dC
S. Ross Browne’s vision for art tends to be an exploration of
relationships. Inherent in that exploration, is the quest for truth
in the parade of ‘isms’. The visual aesthetic coupled with the
social and psychological commentary of the human condition is
the engine with which Ross propels his various mediums. Ross
embraces art as a poignant example of evolution as portrayed
through the mind and soul.
“Persistence Of History”
AL BURTS wASHINGTON, dC
“Reciprocity”
Al Burts studied Fashion Illustration at Virginia Commonwealth
University and summer drawing at The Corcoran School of the
Arts. He is an alumnus of The Duke Ellington School of the
Arts In Washington, DC, a retiree of The National Gallery of Art
and a Gulf War Veteran. His work seizes a range of emotions
from the quiet beauty that only age gives to the absolute
innocence of youth.
MICHAEL COAkESCHICAGO, IL
“In my work, rather than try to tell a story or make a point, I
prefer creating images that leave some room for interpretation
by the viewers. It’s this interpretation that becomes the final
element of the image which completes it uniquely for each of
them.”
Michael Coakes’ photography captures the subtly sensual
movements of the woman’s body in his series titled
“Liquescence.” Michael often used the phrase “the fluidity
of the female form” to explain his earlier work. It was that
phrase that inspired the concept for this more recent series.
Michael produces commercial and fine art photography in his
studio in Chicago, and his work resides in a number of private
collections around the world.

FRANk FRAzIERdALLAS, TX
“Damn Tired Of Sit In”
Frank Frazier is a world-renowned artist with little popularity
in his domestic country. As a Harlem, NY native, it is clear
Frank Frazier’s paintings have been heavily influenced by his
background and rich ancestral history. While some critics
consider his work offensive and racist, he takes pride in his
cultural perspective and believes it is important the world has a
clear understanding of the Black experience.
Frank’s works have depicted everything from the civil rights
movement to jovial jazz concerts. He has pioneered the way for
other minority artists. His activism and dedication to his family
has resulted in global praise.

African-American collective. In addition, Gerald creates works
that make a profound statement about the human condition as a
whole. As a result, he has been described as a visionary artist
of consciousness.

“The Empty Space”
NICOLE HAYdENSAN FRANCISCO, CA
“Tout Le Monde En Veux Et J’en Veux Aussi”
The subject of each of Nicole Hayden’s striking figurative
paintings is lifted from a reference photograph. Whether
unearthed from her family’s albums, a vintage magazine, or
taken by the artist herself, she finds herself drawn to pictures
of the glamorous film stars from cinema’s golden era.
Nicole is particularly drawn to the flattening effect of film.
She enhances this effect by applying intricate patterning to
her backgrounds, often employing gold or silver leaf. These
precious metals turn the femme fatales that star in Nicole’s
paintings into modern-day icons.

HERNAN MIRANdAMIAMI, FL
“Exodo II”
Hernan Miranda is a world-renowned, self-taught painter, born

of all his paintings.

SHEENA vAUGHNONLINE
Sheena Vaughn’s intuitive abstract paintings tell subconscious
narratives of the deep stories of the soul. She cites in her work
issues of observation, reflection and confession. While these
subjects are prefaced by her solicitous use of pigments, the
symbolism used uninhibitedly exposes vulnerability.
Sheena’s use of symbols also act as both a stabilizing
balance and an ingenious hint towards her abstraction. Her
introspective work effectively acts as a reminder that it is
important to listen to the story of the self.
“Blue Industry”
MARGARET ROSE vENdRYESBOSTON, MA
“African Diva (Aretha)”
Like many artists of African descent before her, Margaret Rose
Vendryes is inspired by the African diaspora’s magnificence.
Capturing face and body language in oil on canvas, or with
elements arranged in a container, represents more than
rendering just a likeness.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1955 and raised in Queens, New
York in the 1960’s - Margaret has been filled with a strong
sense of African-American pride that is apparent in her
artwork. The provocative, aggressive, and sensual beauty of
the arts born of Africa are at the center of her current practice
and self.

“My work represents a medley of different textures that stimulate the senses, making the art not just a thing of beauty
to be admired from a distance, but something we can feel connected to through the expression of touch. It’s a way of
revealing an image without actually being able to control it, letting it come about itself.
I broke down the element of encaustics with lines and the streamlines of simplicity to encourage a sense of openness. In
this way, it becomes fluid and free flowing. The patterns and textures formed by the wax embody a sense of times and
continuity.”
