Demonstration Artist Hisae Shouse demonstrates the Ancient Oriental art of Sumi-e. This unique oriental art called Sumi-e literally means “ink painting”. It was brought to Japan from China during Kamakura period. Sumi-e requires only simple materials such as black ink, water, rice paper, and brushes. These simple materials can be used to produce an infinite variety of tones and dynamic quality of strokes on washi paper. Practicing the basic techniques of Sumi-e brings pleasure and enjoyment to the painter. About the Artist Hisae graduated from the Women’s College of Art in Japan with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art. She studied under Master Kunpuu Ito, chairman of the board of the director at Nanga Association. She has exhibited in both Japan and Boston. She has taught Sumi-e classes at the community college in Boston and Temari, Center for Asian and Pacific Arts in Hawaii, and Tradewind gallery in the Windward Mall

Artist Hisae Shouse demonstrates the Ancient Oriental art of Sumi-e.

This unique oriental art called Sumi-e literally means “ink painting”. It was brought to Japan from China during Kamakura period. Sumi-e requires only simple materials such as black ink, water, rice paper, and brushes. These simple materials can be used to produce an infinite variety of tones and dynamic quality of strokes on washi paper. Practicing the basic techniques of Sumi-e brings pleasure and enjoyment to the painter.
