Why I Paint

Sketching has always been my innate passion. It wasn’t until a major crisis in my life that it became my sole driving force to rediscover life and its purpose.

Not many women have experienced consecutive miscarriages; I had three in 2 years. Fittingly, depression and a maelstrom of emotional turmoil followed soon after. While I lost my last unborn baby, I began to lose my will to live. I wrestled with pain and kissed death narrowly within minutes when I was rushed to the hospital a day after incessant bleeding.

One recurring thought kept circling in my mind while I was on the way to the hospital; “I do not wish to be remembered by the way I died but by the way I have lived”.

Life is too short to be wasted on self-pity. If I have one life, I will take my chance to opt for change.

My choice came when I chanced upon my portfolio of old sketches; I knew right away what I wanted to do.

I want my talent in drawing to serve as my life’s new purpose.

New York became my new home to study painting; the newfound peace, serenity and joy embraced me daily as I learned to manage my emotions and channel its energy to capturing stories. What I could not express in words, I painted them with my heart. I delivered sentiments concisely and authentically.

Painting has since been my sanctuary to find calmness and a quiet but overwhelming happiness. Through that, I am able to feel the essence of emotions, the soul of sentiments and the unspoken stories of life. When I see, feel and paint with my heart, the subjects in my artwork and the characters from my imagination come to life on empty canvases. In return, the pleasure and passion is enchanting. With each stroke of the brush, memories are made magical.

This life changing episode has made me realize that I should not wait for the perfect moment to happen but rather create that perfect moment. This is why I paint.
