Personal Background

– He liked to paint inside the Jardin des Plantes, which was a huge greenhouse filled with plants and trees throughout the world, when he entered it, he said it felt like a dream.

– 1889 the worlds fair came to Paris, Henri saw how different people all over the world lived, he imagined faraway lands and began showing these in his paintings later.

– 1884 he obtained a permit to make sketches and copies in the National museum of Paris

Key Historic Events

• 1859 Darwin publishes The Origin of Species. Society started to see evolution of plants and animals in a different way.

• France's involvement in the CRIMEAN WAR (1854-1856) kept France at the center of European diplomacy.

• 1871 In Paris the Semaine Sanglante (Bloody Week) occurred. Several thousand rebels called Communards were killed and a further 20,000 or so executed. Despite this bloody start, the new government,Third Republic,encouraged new architecture, a whole field of artistic ‘isms’ from impressionism onwards, and advances in science and engineering.

Stylistic Traits

• Trait #1- Use of green for nature. He used sometimes over 50 shades of green for one painting, he uses the green usually for nature in his paintings.

• Trait#2- Dark tones. In most of his paintings the painting is in a dark mood or it is in a dark tone.

• Trait#3- Centered subject. In almost all of his paintings the subject of it is in the center of the painting.

• Trait#4- Wild animals in nature. In his paintings they usually have wild animals either with or as the main subject.
