JAMBALAYA! A celebration of African American Music and History - Aperio, Music of the Americas Continuing a pilot program begun in 2013, Aperio will continue to present an educational program entitled “Jambalaya” benefitting elementary and middle school students in the Houston Independent School District. This interactive and collaborative program will be performed by gospel vocalist Barbara Tucker and pianist Michael Pickett. Using a lively, interactive, and customizable format, Ms. Tucker and Mr. Pickett take students on an historical journey exploring the African-American experience through folk song, gospel, jazz and poetry. Following a short residency of four rehearsals led by the artists, participating choral students will give a public performance. This educational experience can be customized to fit the school environment, with additional rehearsals, or presented as a one time visit in a concert format performed by the artists. A format for classroom presentations is available as well. Additional instruments and singers may be provided at the school's request. Technical requirements for this event are rather simple. The artists will need a piano and two microphones to perform the basic program.

Renaissance Rock - Ars Lyrica Houston In "Renaissance Rock" the Crumhorn Collective introduces audiences to more than fifteen fascinating wind and string instruments of the Renaissance. Through a lighthearted, varied, and highly entertaining program featuring dance and consort music from six different European countries, audiences explore the uniquely modular sound and instrumentation possibilities inherent to Renaissance music and instruments. The highlight is a “mixed consort” presentation, in which audiences are invited to participate by suggesting and hearing different instrument combinations for the dance tunes they get to know. When space permits, the participants even get up and learn several Renaissance dances themselves, which allows them to connect with the music on a physical level and enhances their understanding of Renaissance culture. Five musicians dressed in Renaissance costumes play consorts of viols, recorders, crumhorns; plus bagpipes, and hurdy-gurdy.

ArtBound! in-school Artist Residencies - Art League Houston Art League Houston's artist residency program, ArtBound!, is a curriculum-based, in-school arts program at H.I.S.D. Title-1 elementary schools with little or no visual arts instruction. Classroom teachers participate in the planning process to ensure that the residencies support and enhance their classroom objectives. Each residency has an Art League Houston teaching artist visiting a school eight to ten times during a semester, working with three classrooms per visit. For each visit, the teaching artist works with each class for approximately one hour. Art League Houston teaching artists are professional artists and experienced teaching artists. The residencies, including art supplies, are offered free of charge to the participating schools. In addition, the ArtBound! residencies connect to H.I.S.D. curriculum and is provided primarily to grade levels third through fifth. Each ArtBound! residency includes a culminating event, which can be an informal showing of student art work at the participating school or at a neighborhood library or other venue. The Art League Houston teaching artist collects the artwork from the teachers and works with an Art League staff member to prepare and hang the art.

The Hobby Center presents: Framing Dance with Karen Stokes Dance - The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts - Discovery Series Kicking off storytelling month in February, the Discovery Series at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts presents "Framing Dance" with Karen Stokes Dance. In "Framing Dance" students investigate dance, answering the question "What does it mean?" Using storytelling as the launching pad, the students take a journey that starts with a story of Cinderella and ends in the abstract world of contemporary dance. Through viewing dance in a polished theater setting, students engage their own imaginations by considering the meaning of dance through live performances by Travesty Dance Group. Students have the opportunity to discuss their reactions with the company members, as well as join the dancers on stage in a performance. "Framing Dance" impacts art appreciation as the fundamental concepts can be adapted to music, visual art and theatre. "Framing Dance" is an exciting and unique multi-media, interactive event that includes projections, performances by the company, narration by company director Karen Stokes and an on-stage experimental event with the students. Hope Stone’s Say Please and Thank You - The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts - Discovery Series “Say Please and Thank You” is a multi-disciplinary production choreographed by Jane Weiner, featuring Hope Stone Dance Company along with actors Troy Schulze and Justin Doran. The project is a 3 part dance-theater performance with sections based on: “Bear's Picture” by Daniel Pinkwater, select poems from Shel Silverstein’s “Where the Sidewalk Ends,” and a condensed, child-adapted version of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” written by guest artist and collaborator Ian Gallanar. Our goal is to challenge young audiences with the concept of abstract versus literal interpretations of these stories, encouraging them to use their imaginations while also giving them a gentle and positive introduction to the arts. The piece will premiere at The Hobby Center’s “Discovery Series” targeting Houston public schools with disadvantaged populations. We will also perform in Port Isabel, near the Texas/Mexico border where poverty is rampant and access to the arts is scarce. What Would Ben Franklin Have on His iPod? - Mercury Ever wonder what our Founding Fathers did with their spare time? What kind of music did they listen to in order to relax from the pressures of steering the birth of our country? Mercury has the answer! This interactive performance will touch on the lives of some of the Founding Fathers through the power of music. Our performance will focus on four key delegates present at the signing of the Declaration of Independence as well as the different musical forms used to portray their story. We will then learn about democracy as we recreate the presidential debate between Jefferson and Adams followed by a general election and a “musical victory speech” given by the winner. This TEKS-aligned program includes a worksheet with facts and highlights from the performance, and will surely impact the student’s understanding of our early history while expanding their musical horizons.

“Musiqa ReMix” at the Hobby Center - Musiqa Your students have been invited to “Musiqa Remix,” an interactive lecture by an acclaimed music professor at Zilkha Hall. But the Professor is late and two impostors try to take his place. Can they run the "tune collider," give the harmony a "make-over" and keep the "beat box" from exploding? Produced in collaboration with the Alley Theatre, Musiqa takes students inside of pieces of music to show how they're put together. State-of-the-art digital animation helps visually reinforce the concepts. A stellar cast of performers is led by soprano Karol Bennett and actors Sean Patrick Judge and Briana Resa. Original music by Musiqa composers Karim Al-Zand, Anthony Brandt, Pierre Jalbert, Marcus Maroney and Rob Smith. Directed by Joe-Angel Babb from a script by Andrew Hager. Digital design by Andrew Zukoski, lighting design by Nic Philips. Includes surtitles, so the students can follow along and sing with the lyrics. No previous musical experience required. Ars Lyrica Houston Ars Lyrica Houston is an ensemble dedicated to providing audiences with historically-informed performances, of the highest caliber, of music from the 17th and 18th centuries. Founded in 1998 by harpsichordist and conductor Matthew Dirst and incorporated in 2003 as a 501(c)(3) organization, Ars Lyrica relies on a core group of Houston’s finest period-instrument musicians, which it augments regularly with internationally renowned guest artists. Ars Lyrica has created a distinctive identity among ensembles that specialize in Baroque music through its innovative programming: Artistic Director Dirst draws on a rich repertory of chamber and dramatic music, often highlighting exceptional works that merit revival. Its local subscription series is popular with audiences and critics alike, and its recordings have garnered international critical acclaim and recognition, including a Grammy nomination for Best Opera 2011. Since 2000 Houston’s classical music scene has expanded significantly, with period-instrument groups now thriving in the local community and an annual Houston Early Music Festival attracting national attention. Ars Lyrica Houston (ALH) has played a leading role in this transformation—which connects local audiences to a priceless musical heritage—through its diverse concert, recording, and outreach activities. ALH offers a broad range of music from the 17th and 18th centuries in local subscription series of six programs annually, several of which also tour to nearby venues.
