Arts and Crafts Director

Overview The arts and crafts room is a fun and crazy place at camp. It is alive during all 5

activity periods, and unlike other activity areas it is also open and incredibly busy during several other times. These include rainy days, camp play nights, end of camp plaque time and of course all occasions where signs are made: camper arrival days, intercamp, visiting day, theme days, evening programs, all day programs and colour war etc. Giving specific times for banner making (on trip arrival days) would limit the amount of chaos in the art room and on the art-deck-o.

Daily Tasks The art room can quickly become a very messy and chaotic place. Each morning,

make sure all your supplies are in place and ready for the entire day. If you have certain projects planned for that day, make sure all other supply cabinets are locked so kids can’t rummage around and take whatever they want. At the end of each day, tidy up inside and outside – the Art-Deck-O ( the porch of the Arts & Crafts area) is always a popular place to do projects but can get very messy quite quickly. Straighten up all counters, floors and tables and make sure to LOCK ALL CABINETS at the end of the day. Campers and staff will try to get in the art room at all hours of the day, including Staff Rec time.

Programming Arts & Crafts is an ideal activity to inspire creative minds in kids of all ages. In order

to keep things fresh, it is recommended that you have 5-6 main projects per week. This not only creates a sense of excitement around each project, but provides a level of control around each individual choice period.

Kids will often come to the art room with a project in mind (quite often beading). By assigning particular projects for that day/week, you can have greater control over the kids, supplies, and your staff. With regards to beading, this is always a popular choice with kids of all ages. There are always ample supplies for everyone and kids never seem to get sick of it; however, beading should not be done for a full period, but ideally, just at the end of a period once projects are completed.

Throughout the summer, ask kids for suggestions. They may have ideas for things they have never been able to make at home or may have projects they did at school that would be great for camp.

Have kids label all projects and remind them to pick them up at the end of each session. Finally, remember to be creative and HAVE FUN!

Safety While we always encourage campers and staff to have fun at everything they do,

safety is paramount. Always supervise kids using sharp utensils or hot surfaces and lock any dangerous supplies in cabinets if not being used. Young children may need certain

tasks done for them that involve dangerous objects such as exacto knives or hot stoves and glue guns.

Awards See award sheet.

Staff To be successful, the art program needs motivated, energetic and creative staff.

With multiple projects on the go at any one time, it is impossible for the Art Director to help everyone at once. Use your staff and delegate them to work on projects that they can lead or supervise on their own.

At the start of each day/week, work with your staff to figure out who is most appropriate for each project – one staff member may need to work on several projects. If you have enough staff to supervise kids, you may want to delegate a particular staff member to help with non-camper art projects such as set design, evening programs or sign making. Remind staff members who have keys to the art room to lock it when they leave.

Miscellaneous Art Projects As mentioned, there are several times throughout the summer that the Art Director

will need to help out on certain tasks. These include designing stage sets, props and costumes for the 4 camper plays per summer, setting up exhibits for visitor’s day and the year-end plaque.

The Plaque- More details will be provided at camp. In short, the unveiling of the year-end plaque is done during the last night of camp during banquet and is always eagerly awaited by all campers and staff. All details of the plaque must be kept a secret from the rest of camp, with the exception of the Camp Director who will provide any necessary direction and assistance needed.

Additional Notes - Cap activities to manageable number of campers, your Program Director will help you figure out appropriate numbers for certain activities.

- To ensure no repeats, create a file documenting what each cabin has done in their previous visits to the art room

- Staff tie-dye is a hit! Run it as much as possible during staff rec time… very popular.

- Campers will always want to do certain (i.e. beading)!! Encourage them to try new things! - Art shows have been popular in the past. A great idea to have 4 times during the summer is a nice art show that shows off the work of staff and campers every couple of weeks. You could plan on having the show the same night as the play (say during twilight) and have cheese and juice for patrons. It is important to place food orders at least 2 days before your event, you will be told at camp who is the appropriate appointed person to talk to.

PROJECTS FROM RECENT ART DIRECTORS Stained Glass Wax Materials:

- Crayons - Scissors - Wax paper - Iron - Ribbon - Hole Puncher - Feathers - Popsicle Sticks - Glue - Pompoms

Directions:

1. Place a small sheet of wax paper on the table 2. Shave/whittle crayon wax on wax paper (use lots of colours) using scissors 3. Spread a pile of wax out or create an image on wax paper (wax will melt and distort) 4. Place a second sheet of wax paper onto crayon shavings 5. Using iron on low, slowly melt all crayon wax 6. Decorate with popsicle sticks, feathers, pompoms, etc. 7. Punch a hole in wax and tie on ribbon to hang

Page 8: Arts and Crafts Director - Tamakwa · 2018. 11. 29. · Arts and Crafts Director Overview The arts and crafts room is a fun and crazy place at camp. It is alive during all 5 activity

Dream Catchers Materials:

- Moist sticks - Pieces of sinew (wingspan) - Feathers - Beads (wooden and pony beads) - Wire - Yarn/string - Scissors

Directions:

1. Tie stick into a circle and wrap with wire to hold in place (if stick is breaking easily, wet it thoroughly with water before bending)

2. Triple knot the end of the sinew on top of the wire, leaving a long tail 3. Pull the thread across the ring about 3 cm from the knot. Bring the thread behind the ring and pull it

through the space between the taut thread and the ring 4. Continue around the ring until you have nine points. Adjust them so they are evenly spaced. 5. When you get back to the starting point knot, wind the working thread around the knot a couple of times. 6. From behind, bring the thread through the first loop on the ring and continue around the circle, keeping

the thread tight 7. As you go, thread on some beads to the sinew. 8. When your central circle is small, securely knot your thread and weave it around a few threads. Trim. 9. Tie the yarn onto the ring and wind it around the ring 10. Cut pieces of yarn or string to make the tail. Thread feathers and beads onto them 11. Add a loop to the top of the dream catcher to hang it up.

God’s Eyes Materials:

- Two finger-width sticks per person (find in woods at the start of lesson) - Yarn - Glue gun/glue - Beads - Feathers - School glue

Directions:

1. Each camper must find two sticks in the woods to use (about finger-width and hand-length) 2. Glue gun sticks together in a cross arrangement to make it easier to tie the yarn on (this is not a necessary

step) 3. Tie yarn onto the center of the sticks and begin weaving 4. Weave around sticks in an “over 2, under 1” pattern 5. As the go they can string on beads if they wish 6. At the end, tie string and create a loop to hang 7. Decorate with feathers

Altered Books Materials:

- Scrap books - Scissors - Paint - Markers - Glitter - Feathers - Wooden shapes - Tape - Glue and glue sticks - Tissue paper - Exacto knife

Directions: 1. Each camper picks a book to work with from the pile of scrap books 2. Kids will work with the book to turn it into an original piece of art - they can be creative and do whatever

they like with it (cut, decorate, rip pages out, draw in it, etc.) 3. Ideas:

o Glue pages together o Cut shapes in pages o Paint/decorate cover o Make a collage on cover or pages

Page 11: Arts and Crafts Director - Tamakwa · 2018. 11. 29. · Arts and Crafts Director Overview The arts and crafts room is a fun and crazy place at camp. It is alive during all 5 activity

(Magazine) Collage Wallets Materials:

- Magazine(s) - Clear packaging tape - Glue sticks - Scissors - You can use pretty much anything you would like for the collage (ex. feathers, cloth, coloured paper, etc.)

Directions:

1. Go through the magazine and pick out what you want for your collage 2. Use the cover of one of your magazines as the base for your wallet. (Mine usually end up being as wide as

the page) 3. Choose where you would like your cards to go as well as which side you would like to keep your bills. Fold

the page into two or three sections depending on what type of wallet you want. 4. To make the card pockets, use the other outside cover of your magazine for this. Fold the bottom so that

each pocket allows the card to stick out half an inch at the top (so you can see your cards). The height of one page usually makes enough space for three card pockets.

5. To make a dollar bill pocket, cut a rectangle out and two smaller triangles (sort of like hinges, so that the pocket can extend out) and tape these to the cardboard

6. Once your card pockets are set, tape them to the wallet and start the collage 7. Glue pieces of magazine on the wallet where you would like them 8. When you are finished, begin taping the wallet: start by taping down the card pockets, one at a time

(beginning with the top pocket and working your way down) 9. To make a barrier for your cards, fold a piece of packaging tape in half the long way. Then tape the top

and bottom to the top and bottom of the wallet over where you will be keeping your cards.

Paper Mache Materials:

- White glue - Water - Scrap paper - Balloons - Bowls/tins

Directions:

1. Paper Mache Paste: 3/4 white glue to 1/4 water (or if using a good, thick glue, like Elmers you can do 1/2 and 1/2)

2. Put paste in bowls and cut up scrap pieces of paper 3. Balloons must be blown up and given to each camper 4. If they would like to make a piñata - tie a loop of string to a paper clip, tape the paper clip down to the

paper mache project and cover with paper as you go 5. Continue until you have a maximum of 4 layers of paper on the balloon 6. If you wish to add special shapes you can tape on cardboard or egg cartons and then paper mache over

these 7. Let paper mache dry and then paint it the next day

Page 13: Arts and Crafts Director - Tamakwa · 2018. 11. 29. · Arts and Crafts Director Overview The arts and crafts room is a fun and crazy place at camp. It is alive during all 5 activity

Plaster Face Masks Materials:

- Plaster rolls - Vaseline - Bowls of warm water - Elastic/ribbon - Acrylic paint - Hole puncher

Directions: 1. Set up: put out bowls of warm water, cut strips of plaster 2. Tell campers to get into partners - they will each make the other persons face mask, one at a time 3. Each person must put Vaseline all over their face and tie any loose hair back 4. The plaster strips are dipped into the water and then smoothed on to the partner’s face 5. Make multiple layers and continue until the mask feels sturdy and looks opaque 6. Let the mask sit for 10-20 minutes and when it begins to peel away from the face, gently slide your fingers

around the sides to remove it 7. They can switch partners and work on the other mask while the first person’s mask is drying. 8. Let the mask dry overnight and then it can be painted, decorated and tied with ribbon the next day

Sand Candles Materials:

- Clear cups - Birthday candles - Coloured sand - Wax - Crayons - Camp stove

Directions:

1. Heat wax up - a crayon can be used to dye the wax 2. While wax is heating, pour coloured sand inside cup to form pattern 3. Stick birthday candle in the center of the center 4. After wax is heated and cooled, fill remaining space at top with wax so that it molds around the birthday

candle and let it dry

Page 15: Arts and Crafts Director - Tamakwa · 2018. 11. 29. · Arts and Crafts Director Overview The arts and crafts room is a fun and crazy place at camp. It is alive during all 5 activity

Dipped Candles Materials:

- Candle wick - Wax - Camp stove - Glitter/beads - Leaves/flowers - Containers to hold the wax (usually better to have multiple ones to decrease the time that campers are

standing around) - Other containers filled with water

Directions:

1. Heat up wax and add a crayon to give it colour 2. Give each person a long piece of candle wick 3. Tell campers to form a line(s) behind the staff member holding the wax 4. One at a time they can step up and dip their wick in the wax followed by cold water a couple of times 5. Once they have dipped they go to the back of the line and repeat until the candle is at least ½ inch wide 6. Once the candle is thicker, it can be rolled in glitter/beads after being dipped (you can continue putting

layers of wax on after the glitter if you wish) or put leaves or flowers on the wax when it is still warm

Page 16: Arts and Crafts Director - Tamakwa · 2018. 11. 29. · Arts and Crafts Director Overview The arts and crafts room is a fun and crazy place at camp. It is alive during all 5 activity

Clay Pinch Pot Materials:

- Air dry clay - Sculpting tools - toothpicks/knives/scissors - Acrylic paint - Bowls with water

Directions:

1. Give each person a ball of clay, about the size of a fist 2. Instruct them in how to shape it into a pot - different styles and designs can be done! (Allow them to

make other things as well, such as animals) 3. Use sculpting tools to draw patterns and shape the clay and use water to smooth clay 4. After they are finished, leave the clay out to dry overnight and they can paint them next time

Coil Method

1. Cut out a base from flattened piece of clay 2. Roll clay between palms of hands to form long, even roll 3. Fix the roll to the outside of base and coil 4. Keep coiling until pot is high enough 5. With one hand inside for support, smooth the outside

Pinch method

1. Take a small ball of clay in the hand and drive thumb into the centre 2. Between finger and thumb, thin out the walls 3. Keep on pinching between finger and thumb until the walls are fairly thin and the pot is not too heavy

Tie-Dye T-Shirt Materials:

- Squirt bottles - Dye - Hot water - White t-shirts - Elastics - Newspaper/scrap paper - Saran wrap

Directions:

1. Place newspaper/scrap paper on tables so that dye does not soak into the tables. 2. Prepare dye:

a. Separate colours into squirt bottles, using 2 capfuls of dye per bottle (if the dye seems too strong/weak, add water or dye according)

b. Add water to fill bottle 3. Dampen fabric with water 4. Attach elastics for chosen pattern (Bulls eye, Swirl, Stripes…etc.) 5. Apply dye to chosen areas using bottles, until the area is darker than desired 6. Let shirts sit for 20-30 minutes for dye to soak in OR wrap in saran wrap overnight 7. Rinse fabric using colder water until the rinse water runs clear 8. Squeeze gently, untie elastics and hang to air-dry.

Marbled Paper Materials:

- White computer paper - Large baking pans (must be at least bigger than the paper you are using) - Newspaper/scrap paper - Dish soap - Water - Paint (tempera/acrylic) thinned with water - Something to swirl colours with (stick etc.) - Cloths

Directions:

1. Cover your work surface with newspaper/scrap paper so the water/paint doesn’t soak into the table 2. Pour water into pan with a drop of dish soap so that the paper takes the colour better. (The idea is to

have the colour float on top of the water rather than being mixed in.) 3. Paints should be very liquid, so thin if needed. Gently drip colors onto the surface of the water so they

float. (More than three colours may look muddy) 4. Gently swirl the colors with a straw, stick or anything that won't be harmed by the paint. 5. Hold a piece of paper horizontally with both hands and bring ends together so that the paper is curved

into a "U" shape. 6. Lay the paper on top of the painted water surface by placing the center of the paper (bottom of the U

shape) on top of the water and lowering both sides onto the top of the water. Handling the paper this way prevents air bubbles between the paper and the water.

7. Immediately remove the sheet. 8. Set with painted side up on an absorbent, flat surface to dry (another baking sheet with j-cloths lining the

bottom). 9. If needed, paper can be ironed flat by placing between sheets of paper and then press with an iron.

Lanterns Wax Paper Lanterns Materials:

- Wax Paper - Popsicle sticks - Wood shapes - White glue - Glue gun

Directions:

1. Lay a 24" piece of wax paper on your work surface. 2. Start at the left bottom and glue four craft sticks on the wax paper to make a box. 3. Right next to it make another box of four craft sticks. 4. Repeat two more times so you have four boxes. 5. Arrange wood shapes in each box to make an attractive design and glue in place. 6. Trim the wax paper along the top. Trim down the side but leave a half inch to glue. 7. Fold wax paper to make a box and glue flap to secure with glue gun.

Tin Lanterns Materials:

- Old tin containers/cans from the kitchen - Rocks - Nails - Wire - Permanent markers - Paint (if desired)

Directions:

1. The night before the craft is done, freeze empty Campbell’s soup tins filled with water (this ice is important because it provides resistance needed for the craft)

2. The next day, each person draws a design on the outside of their frozen container in a dotted pattern 3. Using rocks and nails, to hammer holes through the dotted pattern (make sure they hammer the nail

straight through) 4. Don’t forget to hammer two holes in on either side to put the handle through 5. Dump ice out or wait for it to melt 6. String wire through the handle holes and paint if desired

Paper Lanterns Materials:

- Construction paper - Scissors - Tape - Ruler - Pencil - Glue, glitter, sequins, if desired to decorate your lantern -

Directions: 1. Use your ruler to measure and cut one inch off the short end of your paper. Set aside to use as the

handle.

Page 25: Arts and Crafts Director - Tamakwa · 2018. 11. 29. · Arts and Crafts Director Overview The arts and crafts room is a fun and crazy place at camp. It is alive during all 5 activity

2. Fold your paper in half lengthwise. 3. Draw a line one inch from the end of the long edge of the paper opposite the folded edge. This will be the

line where you stop cutting. 4. Measure and mark lines one inch apart starting at the folded edge and moving towards the "stop cutting"

Paper Mosaic Materials:

- Construction paper - Scissors - White glue - Pencils

Directions:

1. While kids are choosing their colour of background construction paper, staff cut random chunks of paper out of all different colours of construction paper (no smaller than the size of a penny) or simply tear up the paper. It is important that the pieces are cut or torn already so that the kids can’t cut pieces to specifically fit their design.

2. Draw a simple design on the background (do not shade it in or put a lot of detail in it) 3. Using the pieces of cut up construction paper fill in the design with desired colour and glue the pieces

down leaving some space between each piece so it looks like a mosaic.

paper in place and trim. 4. Secure fishing line or other string to the wire. (make sure it is long enough to use for hanging) 5. Using scissors cut the ends of the tissue paper into rounded or pointy shapes. 6. Separate layers of tissue paper, pulling away from the centre, one at a time.

Embroidery Thread Eggs Materials:

- Small balloons - Embroidery thread - White glue - Small bowls - Pins (or something sharp to pop balloon)

Directions:

1. Blow up balloons. Remember the size of the balloon will be the size of the egg, therefore don’t let them get too big.

2. Cut strands of embroidery thread, approximately an arm’s length. (Make sure this is done before since this craft gets messy).

3. Dip a strand of thread into small bowls of glue. Holding the thread over the cup of glue, pull the thread through your finger and thumb to spread the glue along the whole length of the thread.

4. Wrap the thread over the balloon. 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you have covered as much of the balloon as you desire. (The more you cover

the balloon the sturdier it will be) 6. Tie a dry piece of string around the knot in the balloon and hang overnight to dry. 7. Once the balloon is completely dry, pop the balloon and carefully pull it out through a gap in the thread.
