Why do artists create art?Since prehistoric times, when people painted images on cave walls, artists have explored ways to express themselves through art. They share their ideas, feelings and beliefs with images.

In this painting, the artist Jan Vermeer invites us to watch him paint in his studio. His subject, the woman wearing the crown of blue leaves, is Clio. She is the Greek goddess of History.

In one hand she is holding a book where she writes the names of heroes in History. In her other hand is a trumpet, a typical instrument of fame and glory.

With these symbols, Vermeer shares with us his ideas about the importance of art and artists in history.

Art history divides art into different periods, called movements. In each art movement there are a group of artists who share similar reasons or techniques for making art. You can make a timeline for the different art movements you learn about.

Many artists paint portraits of important people, such as public figures or royalty. However, no one knows exactly who this woman was or why she was important to the painter, Leonardo da Vinci.

Da Vinci was one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance. Artists during this period studied proportion and explored new ways of painting very realistic portraits.

Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa with a mysterious smile on her face. Her torso and head are turned a little and she looks out at the viewer from the corner of her eye. The imaginary landscape in the background is also very mysterious.

Like the Greek and Roman artists that came before them, Renaissance artists often painted their subjects in profile.

Special portraitThroughout history, artists have painted portraits in many different styles. Portraits can show the head in a variety of positions and they can be realistic or abstract. You can combine different head positions to create a portrait of a special person.

Draw a profile down the centre of the head.

Add features to the profile and the front view.
