Daniel Esty JD ’86 on Sustainability: Energy, Environment, and the Economy in the 21st Century

Thursday, November 10, 6:30 pmDaniel C. Esty is the Hillhouse Professor of Environmental Law and Policy at Yale and holds appointments in both the Law School and the School of Forestry, as well as a secondary appointment at the School of Management. Join Professor Esty as he unpacks the ecological, political, economic, and historical elements of sustainability and how sustainable practices might pave a path for the future. Explore the challenges that stem from society’s desire for low-cost, clean energy that can support a vibrant economy while simultaneously reducing pollution, addressing climate change, conserving natural resources, and elminating other negative impacts of industrialization and economic growth. Please join Professor Esty for a reception at 6:30 pm, followed by the lecture at 7:00 pm.

Walter Shapiro on Hustling Hitler

Tuesday, November 15, 6:30 pmWritten by acclaimed journalist and Yale lecturer in political science Walter Shapiro, Hustling Hitler is the true story of how his great-uncle Freeman Bernstein—a Jewish vaudeville impresario and con man—managed to cheat Hitler’s agents in the run-up to WWII. Told with cinematic verve and hilarious perspective, Hustling Hitler investigates a larger-than-life figure. Join Professor Shapiro as he transforms Freeman Bernstein from a footnote in history to the hustler who forever changed it.

A short reception will begin at 6:30 pm, followed by his talk at 7:00 pm.

Betsy Barlow Rogers ’80 on Green Metropolis

Wednesday, November 16, 6:30 pmDiscover the natural history of New York City parks with Elizabeth Barlow Rogers, the woman who was responsible for launching the restoration of Central Park in the 1980s. Through a combination of historical facts and interviews with caretakers, guides, local residents, guardians, and visitors, Green Metropolis examines seven remarkable green spaces in and around the City and their transformation over time by both human and natural developments.

Please join Ms. Rogers for a reception at 6:30 pm, followed by a lecture on the green spaces described in her book at 7:00 pm.

Steve Pincus on The Heart of the Declaration

Tuesday, November 29, 6:30 pmEach election cycle, the country’s political parties fight over how large a role the government should play in the lives of American citizens. The Declaration of Independence has long been invoked as a document in favor of limited government. Looking beyond the Declaration’s frequently cited opening paragraphs, Steve Bradford Durfee Professor of History at Yale, Steve Pincus reveals how the document provides for a government with extensive powers that promote and protect the people’s welfare. By examining the Declaration in the context of British imperial debates, Professor Pincus offers a nuanced portrait of the Founding Fathers, intentions, which have profound political implications for today.

A short reception will begin at 6:30 pm, followed by the lecture at 7:00 pm.

GILLIAN THOMAS ’90 ON BECAUSE OF SEX INTERVIEWED BY DEBORAH EPSTEIN HENRY ’89

Thursday, November 3, 6:30 pm | How did one law, the Supreme Court, and a few tenacious women change the American workplace forever? While Title VII made it illegal to discriminate “because of sex”, that simple phrase didn’t mean much until ordinary women began using the law to get justice on the job. Join author Gillian Thomas as she shares a vivid narrative of how the workplace was forever changed by Title VII. In an interview with women’s workplace expert Deborah Epstein Henry, Ms. Thomas will recount the stories of unsung heroines who dismantled a world where women only played supporting roles, where sexual harassment was rampant and pregnancy meant getting a pink slip.

Join Ms. Thomas and Ms. Epstein Henry for a reception at 6:30 pm, followed by the interview at 7:00 pm.

AT THE CLUB

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Megan Loughran ’09 Megan Loughran ’09 is an actor, singer, and writer in Manhattan. She has performed in the ensemble of the Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, as well as working as an improviser. Loughran is currently developing a play she wrote with Yale classmate, Alex Trow ’09, MFA ’12, entitled F Theory.”

Why did you join the Club?

My parents signed me up as a graduation gift. They were sneaky about it because they only paid for the first quarter.

What has been your favorite event or activity at the Club?

The Young Members Committee threw an Alice In Wonderland dance party this past spring. The DJ was dressed like Alice — she even wore a bow on her headphones. There were surprise break-dancers at midnight - dressed as playing cards. I’d do it again.

What advice for taking advantage of the Club would you give to a new member?

Do you guys know how great the library talks are? They are like Master’s Teas, but with wine. Authors talk about their new books and sign them. Filmmakers talk about their new films and screen them. I like to bring friends and ask them for favors at the end because I know they will be in a good mood.

FOOD + WINE

CHEF’S CORNER

THE NOSTALGIA OF THANKSGIVINGIt always amazes me how much food has quietly had an impact on my life. I was trained professionally as a chef, but my relationship with food began early, surrounded as I was by a family full of wonderful cooks, such as my grandma (affectionately called Oma) and my mom.

In the late 1950s my grandparents owned a German delicatessen in Garden City, New York. I remember being a small child and watching my Oma in the back kitchen working over an old black cast iron stove and peeling potatoes for salad, while my Opa worked the counter serving his customers. The store was always crowded, and everything was made from scratch. They worked hard but always seemed to enjoy what they were doing.

My grandparents prepared many traditional holiday dishes that I find myself still serving today at the Club. Nowhere is this more noticeable than at our annual Thanksgiving Day Brunch. One of my favorite foods growing up was a beet and herring salad tossed in a French style dressing with walnuts, capers, and a chopped hard-boiled egg. Another favorite was my mom’s sausage stuffing: sautéed celery, onions, and sausage with ground sage, black pepper, chopped parsley, and chicken stock. It’s the perfect Thanksgiving dish. Thanksgiving was never complete for me without those dishes, and I hope they have become a memorable part of our members’ Thanksgiving traditions.

CHEF’S CORNER

WINE of the month: Benovia WineryJoe Anderson and Mary Dewane founded Benovia winery in 2005, naming their label after their fathers, Ben and Novian. Benovia, which makes Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and Chardonnay, has vineyards in Sonoma County, California, a wine-growing region of which the famed horticulturist Luther Burbank once said: “I firmly believe, from what I have seen, that this is the chosen spot of all this earth as far as Nature is concerned.”

Benovia Wine Dinner with Co-Owner and Winemaker Mike Sullivan

Wednesday, November 9, 6:00 pm One of northern California’s top winemakers, Mike Sullivan joined the Benovia team early on as someone who shared a passion for quality. Sullivan currently serves as co-owner, general manager, and winemaker for the winery. Join Mr. Sullivan for a dinner featuring reserve selections alongside Chef Kehrli’s food pairing for $75 per person, exclusive of taxes and gratuities. Reservations are available on the Club’s online calendar.
