NYC Craft Distillers Festival

“Reflections: Art & Beauty,” a one-night-only exhibition of significant contemporary art works to benefit Robert Wilson's internationally acclaimed arts incubator The Watermill Center was hosted by Sherle Wagner International, the premier source, world-wide, for luxury bath hardware, and bath accessories and the recently launched Fairweather Magazine. The Vernissage drew over 400 guests to the gorgeous showroom. A magnificent sculpture in painted and chromed steel, “Rev. E. Piscapalian Study,” by the renowned John Chamberlain towered over attendees as they arrived and were greeted by Evan Geoffroy, CEO, Sherle Wagner, Alexandra Fairweather and Eric Goodman, co-founders Fairweather Magazine and Pinki Patel of The Watermill Center.

While sipping exquisite Los Vacos Chardonnay from Les Domaines Barons Rothschild (Lafitte) and a festive Valdo Prosecco Brut courtesy of wine consultant Jacques Bissat of Nouvelle Lumiere, guests admired the works of several of the world’s leading contemporary artists brilliantly placed in tableaux created by Sherle Wagner’s design team and curated by Alexandra Fairweather, Katherine Vogel, Danyel Mahmood and Maria-Anna Goess.

The NYC Craft Distillers Festival took place at the Bowery Hotel on Saturday. Over 20 specialty curated Craft Distillers joined a 1920s jazz band for a speakeasy experience.

katy’s CourageThe Katy’s Courage 5K will take

place on Saturday on Water Street in Sag Harbor. Katy’s Courage 5K celebrates the life, generosity and bravery of Sag Harbor 12-year-old Katy Stewart who lost her battle with cancer in December 2010.

Proceeds from this year’s race will support Katy’s Kids, a newly formed partnership with the Children’s Museum of the East End to be launched fall 2014. Katy’s Kids will provide counseling opportunities for children experiencing grief, as well as support for their families. This will include counseling for areas of loss

including death, divorce, adoption and immigration. Also supported will be the Katy’s Courage Fund for Pediatric Cancer Research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan as well as scholarships for students in Sag Harbor and East Hampton schools.

and the Joshua Levine Memorial Foundation’s annual dinner will take place at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor on Sunday. In November 2010, a tragic tractor accident took the life of young farmer Joshua Levine at Quail Hill Farm in Amagansett. The Joshua Levine Memorial Foundation (JLMF) www.joshualevinefoundation.org was founded shortly after Josh’s death in 2011 to identify and support charitable programs which promote good farming practices, healthy eating, education and a sustainable environment.

The Josh Levine Memorial Annual Dinner celebrates the efforts made by community partners to reverse trends which have made families ill with diet related diseases and obese through unhealthy eating practices. It also celebrates the life of a young man who saw the value of working the land, growing food, serving the community and providing a healthy environment for his family.

This will be the second year in which DeMattei will ask for the communities' help in reaching her 2014 goal of raising $20,000 to fill 250 backpacks with required school supplies for area elementary school students.

Talk about a meteoric rise. Michael Fassbender was a virtual unknown a few years ago, but a series of high profile movies have thrust him into the spotlight.

Fassbender was born in Germany but raised in Ireland – his parents owned a restaurant and as a young man Fassbender worked as chef.

He caught the acting bug when he was 17 and began studying drama, eventually migrating to London to study at the Drama Centre.

Fassbender scored a role on “Band of Brothers” which was produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. He turned in impressive performances on the HBO miniseries in the role of Burton “Pat” Christenson.

His run of high profile movies began in 2006 with 300 and was

followed by Inglourious Basterds, Prometheus, X Men: First Class, Jane Eyre, and the Academy Award winner 12 Years A Slave, which earned him an Oscar nomination.

There are more big ticket films coming up: he reprises his role as Magneto in X Men: Days of Future Past, as David in a new Prometheus and star in the title role of a new Macbeth film slated to be released in 2014.

Under The Skin (R ) Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast) has fashioned an ambitious, unusual film about an alien in human form traveling through Scotland. Scarlett Johansson gives a magnificent performance, but the film is so opaque it seems to drift away into la la land on occasion. It’s a must see, though.

Captain America (PG-13) And so it begins. As the weather warms, the superheroes descend on theaters. Chris Evans is back in the title role, and the aforementioned Scarlett Johansson is back as well. Marvel fans will eat it up – for the rest of us? Not so much.

Dallas Buyers Club Yes, the actors are magnificent but in the end this is a depressing movie, so be prepared.

Director Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, The Wrestler) tries his hand at the Bible. Say what you will about Russell Crowe, he excels in this type of role. An excellent cast that includes Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, and Anthony Hopkins delivers the goods as well. It’s a good one.

The Missing Picture * (NR) A documentary about Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge era is a magical, profound, and surprising film that cannot be explained in words – it must be seen.

Divergent (PG-13) All the latest special effects don’t make up for a ridiculous plot in this sci-fi action flick directed by Neil Burger (The Illusionist). Kate Winslet apparently was signed to give the film credibility but let’s face it: it’s a payday for her and nothing more. Still, if you like this sort of thing it’ll hold your attention – briefly.

Veronica Mars (PG-13) The TV series goes big screen, with lots of the same faces including the title character, played by Kristen Bell. Fans will enjoy the continuity and zippy one-liners. For newbies, it’s an acquired taste.

Ingredients (serves 4)2 red peppers

2 zucchini8 plum tomatoes

1 red onion1 head of cauliflower1/2 bunch of basil

8 spears of asparagus1/3 c of Parmesan cheese

1 tsp chopped garlic10 oz bag of spinach

1/2 c toasted pine nutsjuice from 1/2 a lemon

3/4 c olive oil2 oz. butter

2 boxes of dried linguini pastasalt and pepper to taste

Linguini With Pesto & Roasted Vegetables

MethodBegin by bringing a large pot

of water to a boil. While the water boils you can start processing the vegetables by slicing the zucchini and the onion, removing the seeds from and slicing the peppers and tomatoes, and cutting the cauliflower into small florets.

Then toss all the processed vegetables in a mixing bowl with a little bit of salt and pepper as well as a 1/4 cup of the olive oil. Spread the vegetables out evenly over a sheet pan and bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes.

Now to make the pesto sauce

you will need a bowl of ice water to quickly cool the asparagus and spinach, your water should now be boiling. Cook the asparagus in the boiling water for 45 seconds before removing it from the boiling water and submerging it in the ice water, do the same for the bag of spinach. When the vegetables have been cooled in the ice water remove them and strain off any excess water. Now in a blender add the asparagus, spinach, toasted pine nuts, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, Parmesan cheese, and salt and pepper and blend on high for 30 seconds.

To cook the pasta boil another large pot of fresh water. Once the water boils, salt the water and cook the pasta for about 10 minutes stirring often. When the pasta is cooked, strain it into a large mixing bowl. In

a sauté pan gently heat the pesto and melt the butter in with it.

The vegetables should be finished at this point so now you will toss the pasta in 1/2 the pesto sauce. Top the pasta with the roasted vegetables and spoon the rest of the pesto sauce over the top.

OBITUARY

Beloved local musician and “King of Long Island Calypso” Vivian Walsh succumbed to pancreatic cancer last Thursday morning in Southampton Hospital. The founder and front man of the wildly popular steel drum-based band Vivian and The Merrymakers was 76.

Adored on the East End for his contagious cheer and upbeat island music, Walsh was a resident of Sag Harbor.

On Saturday, family members posted on his Facebook page, offering thanks “for the outpouring of love and support showed during

Angels Dancing To His Steel Drumthis difficult time.” Services were held at the Yardley Funeral Home on Sunday and a musical tribute “to celebrate Vivian’s life and passion” will be held later this summer.

Walsh’s Facebook page was filled with the outpouring. Said one friend, “You shot from the Heavens and touched our hearts . . . but now it’s time for God to touch yours. We will miss your shining smile and the love we felt with your beautiful music.”

Said another, “May you not “rest in peace” but instead enjoy an eternal party with all of the angels in heaven, who by now are dancing to the beat of your steel drum! Although you will be forever missed, we thank you for so many years of happy memories!!!”

A number of posters spoke of Walsh’s end of summer concerts in Agawam Park in Southampton each year, and the joyful crowds that attended.

According to long time friend Gary Madison, Walsh came to the United States from the island of Dominica in the 1960s. He’d worked as a mailman in his native country, and his two daughters still live there. Additional obituary information was not available at press time.

“PSEG is trying to have it both ways. They want the check in hand before they will even discuss real numbers or how to minimize costs. No business or utility runs this way. It is disingenuous of PSEG to take the highest number possible and then say ‘show me the money or we won’t even develop a budget,’” said Save East Hampton spokesman Richard Janis. “PSEG must come back to the table to work through the scenarios and funding options. Good faith was promised and is expected from Governor Cuomo’s handpicked utility provider.”

Responding to a letter signed by local elected representatives calling for a strategy that involves splitting the cost of burying transmission lines currently in the process of being installed through East Hampton village and town among locals and islandwide ratepayers as happened when lines were buried in Watermill several years ago, PSEG President and COO David Daly wrote “Based on our analysis, we do not agree with the assertions made in your letter regarding Southampton, and we do not find applicability to the project in East Hampton. . . . the elected officials of The

Rally Sunday, PSEG “Disingenuous”Town and Village of East Hampton need to determine who in their jurisdictions should be assessed the incremental cost of alternative construction.”

In other words, PSEG is not going to shell out anything to bury the lines, it’s on East Hampton residents.

Village residents reacted with passionate opposition earlier this winter when the erection of giant poles commenced on local lanes. Since then, they’ve enlisted the aid of local officials (some of whom signed off on the project last year) in demanding the poles be removed and the lines buried underground.

PSEG officials at first promised to work with the community, but in recent weeks Daly has made clear the utility won’t incur any additional costs. According to Janis he refused to attend a meeting to discuss alternatives scheduled last Friday. The spokesman said his group has identified revenue that could cover as much as 50 percent of the $20 million PSEG estimates the do-over would cost.

The Bridgehampton Museum will be hosting North Fork artist, Bernard Springsteel, who will be offering a narrated gallery talk through his current “Landscapes of Eastern Long Island” exhibit at the William Corwith House on Saturday at 3 PM. The event will be held at Corwith House Museum on 2368 Montauk Highway.
