Led Zeppelin. The Who. Cream. These were the giants of classic

rock, powered by the super-drummers whose legend is carved in Rock “N” Roll history: Jon Bonham. Keith Moon . G inge r Baker.

But no band ever rocked harder, or louder, than Mountain, fueled by i t s br i l l ian t drummer, Corky Laing.

Any doubters need only pick up a copy of Climbing! o r N a n t u c k e t Sleighride – and play them really, really loud. Only The Who could r i va l Moun ta in when it came down to sheer volume.

“Yeah, I have t rouble,” Laing said in a recent interview, referring to his hearing. “I go to the same hearing doctor as Roger from Foghat.”

Laing, who is originally from Canada, joined Mountain in 1970, replacing N.D Smart. The other members were Long Island’s own Leslie West, whose first band, the Vagrants, was an East End staple. The bass player, Felix Pappalardi, was a well-known producer for Cream. Steve Knight played keyboards. The band was named for West’s girth – he was a hefty cat in those days.

“I met Leslie in Tiana Beach one summer. He was wearing lipstick trying to get out of the draft!” Laing recalled. He will reminisce about the golden days of electric rock when he appears at Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor on May 18.

Laing was and is an accomplished drummer, and he has always been a student of the science. “We had a lot

Laing migrated to Long Island and took in the Hamptons’ summer scene. “Dino Danelli was `the man’ back then,” he said of the drummer for the

Young Rascals, who played a steady gig at The Barge in East Quogue in the early sixties. “I loved Dino.”

But Laing also app r e c i a t e d Bonham, and M o o n , a n d m e n t i o n e d Hal Blaine as a p rominen t influence. “He w a s g r e a t . He did all the Beach Boys ’ stuff, and the Four Seasons.”

the skins for the band – he co-wrote two of Mountain’s biggest hits, “Mississippi Queen” and “For Yasgur’s Farm.”

“I brought ̀ Mississippi Queen’ to the band as a rap song. I was trying to keep a girl on the dance floor in Nantucket from leaving. I was kind of improvising. And yes, she was from Mississippi. She was wearing a see-through dress!”

Laing joined the band shortly after its legendary performance at Woodstock. Yet he holds a prominent place in the festival’s history, appearing on the multi-million selling Woodstock album.

It turned out the drum mic didn’t work when Ten Years After was playing “Going Home.” Laing said the record producers came to him. ”They wanted me to dub in the drums. The song is like 40 minutes long. Later they sent me a

Gold Record.” A year or two later Laing said he received another Gold Record, for “Yasgur’s Farm” which was also part of the album. “So I got two f***king Gold Records for

Woodstock and I wasn’t even there,” he said with a laugh.

Laing has lived on the North Fork for many years. In addition to gigs with Mountain from time to time he’s been touring by himself, doing a little bit of everything. “I started lecturing at universities in Europe, and took it from there.” Laing takes his audiences through the musical genres, demonstrating drumming techniques through the decades. “There is a different tempo that defines every sound.” The sixties, he

said, were unique. “There was never a decade like it, when you had the freedom to f**k up if you liked.”

Mountain is done touring for the moment, Laing said. “I’m kind of the

last man standing. I don’t have the band. But it’s fun to go back and remember what we had then.”

Bay Street -- Laing often hangs in Sag Harbor -- was a natural venue for him. “It’s such a beautiful theatre, a wonderful venue. It gives me the freedom to do what I want to do.”

Laing promised some surprises at the show. “I hate hyping, it’s awkward. But I’ve asked some special guests to join me at the end so maybe some musicians might show up to play.”

Montauk Show Coming Up

The Montauk Artists’ Association will be presenting the 6th Annual Juried Fine Arts Show on May 24, 25, and 26. Artists from all over the country have already signed up for the event. Paintings range “from sand, surf and sunsets to critters and fanciful imagery,” organizers said.

Group Exhibition At Richard J. Demato Gallery

“Loyal Subjects,” a group exhibit that “celebrates the animal lover in each of us, from roosters to rabbits,

and dogs to piglets, graphite sketches to oil paintings, and photography” will be mounted at the Richard Demato Gallery. “The show will increase awareness and offer financial support for the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation and find homes for their cuddly, furry friends and residents,” said Richard J. ONGOINGQuogue Library Gallery

“Without Words - Paintings and Collage,” features works by Marion Jones. She received her fine arts

degree at University of Colorado and spent the first part of her career teaching art, as an assistant art director at McGraw Hill and as a freelance illustrator.

In 2009 Jones had surgery for a brain tumor, which left her with diminished language abilities and memory function. When finding words became difficult, painting became her way to express emotion. She was surprised by the kind of art that she began producing, remarking that it showed new energy, colors, and depth. Her style evolved from traditional landscapes to abstract works and collage.

There will be an artist reception Saturday from 2:30 to 4:30 PM in the Quogue Library Gallery. The exhibit will be shown through May 30. For information call 631-653-4224 ext. 3.

violent film is not for everyone, but it is surely going to attract a cult following of people who appreciate this type of humor. Steve Oram, who co-wrote the script, plays a nerdy Englishman who wants to tour the British Isles with his girlfriend (Alice Lowe) and show her all the nerdy sights. Unfortunately, things don’t go well, and the couple reacts in a grisly manner. This film is more than a little demented but it is wickedly funny. Note: it’s most assuredly not for youngsters.

New To TheatersThe Great Gatsby (PG -13) The

season’s first “big” movie – that is, a serious effort from Hollywood

that carries with it serious Oscar credentials. Baz Luhrmann (Strictly Ballroom) directs and co-wrote the script (Yes, F. Scott Fitzgerald gets a credit) and Leonardo DiCaprio lands the coveted title role. Tobey Maguire plays the writer with aplomb, and Carey Mulligan is magnificent as Daisy Buchanan. Everything about the film sparkles -- the sets, the dialogue, the costumes, and the cinematography.

This is indeed a major Oscar contender, and Leo is overdue for a statue. Don’t miss it.

award winning play flew under the radar when it was released in 2005 but it is building up steam on the DVD market the old fashion way – word of mouth. A young man inherits his father’s shoe manufacturing business only to find the stodgy styles the company produces have stopped selling. Enter a drag queen (Chiwetel Ejiofor) with a decidedly different concept of what a shoe should look like. It’s funny, it’s poignant, and it’s a winner. Rent it and enjoy.

Today’s Birthday: Ronnie Lott, 1959To say they don’t make football

players like Ronnie Lott anymore would be an understatement.

These days athletes have agents and limos, they tweet and they posture, they hold out for more millions and they complain when they have a sprained ankle. Many of these huge goons take Human Growth Hormones and other banned drugs to make them even bigger.

Consider Ronnie Lott. One of football’s most vicious tacklers and hitters, Lott played 14 seasons in the National Football League, from 1981 to 1995. A first round draft pick out of Southern Cal, he was named All Pro eight times and has four Super Bowl Rings, a record. He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Lott wasn’t much of a complainer – he was and is the strong, silent type – but he was the unquestioned leader of the San Francisco 49ers’ defense, just as Joe Montana was to the offense.

Lott was known best for his jarring tackles and his ability to elevate his performance in the playoffs. By the way, Lott is 6-foot tall and weighed 201 pounds when he played.

How tough was Lott? Once he almost severed the tip of his index finger making a tackle. He was called to the sidelines and the trainer informed Lott he was done for the day. “Why?” Lott asked. The trainer told him he couldn’t play with the finger in that condition.

”Then cut it off,” Lott ordered. The trainer reluctantly severed the top of Lott’s finger and bandaged it, and Lott returned to the game. He didn’t miss a single play.
