Autumn at Canary Wharf

After a jam-packed summer, Canary Wharf slips into a mellow autumn with screenings from the RSC, two fabulous fashion events, theatre performances in the award-winning Crossrail Place Roof Garden and the final Lunch Market of the year.

Explore our stunning new art exhibitions and, if you are feeling inspired, try your hand at our social Pop Up Painting sessions.

The highlight of the autumn is, of course, the arrival of Ice Rink Canary Wharf in Canada Square Park in November. What could be more festive than skating under the twinkling lights and soaring skyscrapers with friends and family? Book your session now as the most popular holiday dates sell very quickly.

We hope you’ll enjoy the remaining months of 2017 in our company!

Receive 3 hours free parking at Canary Wharf on weekends and Bank Holidays when you spend

£10 at any of our shops, cafés, bars or restaurants*.

TASTE

Blanche McIntyre directs this chillingly contemporary Titus Andronicus, starring David Troughton, the latest production in the RSC’s acclaimed Rome series.

When a society is oppressed, it becomes violent. How do we govern ourselves? Set in the chaos and disorder of 2017, Titus Andronicus is a commentary on the way this world could be going.

Titus has returned from a brutal 10-year war having lost 21 sons in battle. Betrayed by his nation, and with his family in pieces, a series of bloody events follows as he and Tamora, Queen of the Goths, begin a violent cycle of revenge.

Director Angus Jackson completes the RSC collection of Shakespeare’s epic Roman titles with this full throttle war play which sees Sope Dirisu take on the title role.

Revelling in the sweat of the battlefield, Coriolanus transports us back to the emergence of the republic of Rome.

Caius Martius Coriolanus is a fearless soldier but a reluctant leader. His ambitious mother attempts to carve him a path to political power, but he struggles to change his nature and do what is required to achieve greatness. In this new city state struggling to find its feet, where the gap between rich and poor is widening every day, Coriolanus must decide who he really is and where his allegiances lie.

Ice Rink Skating on the ice under twinkling lights and the iconic skyscrapers of Canary Wharf is one of London’s most magical winter experiences. Nestled in Canada Square Park, the ice rink is fully covered so whatever the British weather has in store the fun continues.

This year discover the dedicated children’s rink and the unique skate path – an ice trail weaving under the fairy lit trees and back to the rink.

Along with skating sessions and lessons, the rink hosts a whole array of other activities including ice hockey, curling tournaments and speed skating and is the perfect venue for children’s parties, team-building days, launch events and work Christmas events.

So why not get in the festive mood and visit with some friends, bring a date for a magical night out or gather the family for an exciting day on the ice. This is one experience you can't miss out on this winter.

Coinciding with the centenary of Auguste Rodin’s death in 1917, the exhibition underlines his enduring sculptural legacy with significant works ranging from what he considered his earliest major work, Mask of a Man with a Broken Nose conceived (1863/4) to later more loosely modelled figures of the late 1890s. Although Rodin is generally considered the progenitor of modern sculpture, he did not set out to rebel against the past. He was schooled traditionally, took a craftsman-like approach to his work, and desired academic recognition, although was never accepted into Paris's foremost school of art.

The exhibition of over twenty-five works, curated by Iain Michael Brunt founder of antiques.co.uk, includes work from a rare lifetime cast of the artist’s famed Eternal Spring (conceived 1884) as well as renowned pieces such as The Thinker (conceived 1880) and The Kiss (conceived 1886). The exhibition will also include a number of drawings rarely seen in public.

Kenneth Armitage came to the fore in British Modernism in the 1940s and '50s, acclaimed internationally after his sculpture was exhibited in the Venice Biennales of 1952 and 1958. From the mid-1970s he made early morning visits to Richmond Park, not far from his West London studio, and drew the oak trees, revelling in their diversity of form, grouping and individuality. The sculptures in this exhibition derive from these drawings and are in a wide range of scale and form.

The exhibition is supported by The Kenneth Armitage Foundation

Old Flo Returns to East London

Henry Moore’s Draped Seated Woman – affectionately nicknamed ‘Old Flo’ by residents of the Stifford Estate in Stepney where she reclined from 1962-97 – returns to the East End on 22 October, after 20 years in the green pastures of Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

The bronze sculpture, created by Moore in 1957/8 as an edition of 6, was originally acquired by London County Council as part of its Patronage of the Arts scheme to site works of art in housing estates and other public spaces, for the enjoyment of the local population.

Following Mayor John Biggs' pledge to bring 'Old Flo' back to the borough, Tower Hamlets council ran an open bidding process and Canary Wharf Group were successful in providing a new home for this monumental work of art for the next 5 years. The location for the sculpture is Cabot Square, overlooking the Middle Dock and accessible to all who pass by.

A programme of celebrations, education and outreach will be rolled out while Old Flo is at Canary Wharf. If you would like to receive updates on these please contact us at: [email protected]

Anne Krinsky's Tropical Thames is an installation of large-scale digital prints on aluminium panels, created specially for Crossrail Place Roof Garden. Krinsky's imagery is inspired by architectural structures found on the Thames in south-east London – docks, piers and river walls – that were shaped by centuries of shipping and trade.

Tropical Thames also responds to the roof garden's dramatic roof structure, designed by Foster and Partners, and to the planting, which includes tropical species that first arrived in Britain through the Thames docks.

MONDAY 4 SEPTEMBER – FRIDAY 29 SEPTEMBERLukas Greweniglukasgrewenig.com

Lukas Grewenig has encoded hidden images and symbols into the surfaces of his jewellery, which only become visible under specific lighting circumstances, reminiscent of the way a place or a situation can suddenly materialise in our consciousness, just to dissolve after a brief moment. They may appear suddenly or have to be sought out, similar to the etiquette of Victorian mourning jewellery.

SUNDAY 1 OCTOBER – FRIDAY 3 NOVEMBERMichele Oberdieck micheleoberdieck-glass.com

Having recently completed an MA in Glass at the Royal College of Art, Oberdieck found a new passion in blown glass, focusing on colour merging and surface texture Mirroring the soft organic lines created when one molten colour bleeds into the other, her moody, soft and ethereal results are reminiscent of dip dyed fabrics. This enhances both the qualities of the glass medium, and the movement of colour inciting moods and memories.

SUNDAY 5 NOVEMBER – FRIDAY 1 DECEMBERMade by Manos madebymanos.com

Manos’s designs are the products of his experiments in materiality; for him clay is not a static material but a starting point - everything develops from the constant changes in mixture and method. The tactility of a material, how it feels to touch and hold, is a key part of its overall character, informing just as much as its visual landscape. In his work Manos prioritises the aspect of materiality.

FRIDAY 20 OCTOBER – TUESDAY 2 JANUARY 2018Henry Moore’s Draped Seated Woman

A display celebrating the return of Henry Moore’s Draped Seated Woman to Tower Hamlets, telling the story of how ‘Old Flo’ – as this monumental bronze sculpture is affectionately known – came to reside on the Stifford Estate in Stepney from 1962 until the estate was demolished in 1997. Since that time the sculpture was on loan to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, enjoyed by the park’s many visitors.

A strenuous campaign to save this significant sculpture, by arguably Britain’s most important modern sculptor, from sale by auction some years ago had a happy outcome and Tower Hamlets Council announced its intention of bringing the sculpture back to the borough.
