Page 1: Arts Liberalis Course on Machiavelli vs Aristotle

Title: Machiavelli's Prince and the Politics

This course seeks to compare what is often held to be two radically different understanding of human political actions and the way politics works. We will closely examine first Machiavelli's Prince and then the heart of Aristotle's Politics--books 4 though 6. The emphasis on those books rather than the more traditionally read and discussed books is to show that Aristotle's political teaching has a very practical dimention that is all too often forgot. And when we read that in the light of what Machiavelli, who is all too often seen as the Master of Modern Politics, teaches students will find an Aristotle they never saw before and one that very much has something to teach contemporary students of politics.

Reading: Primary texts will be the Machiavelli's Prince and Aristotle's Politics.

Assessment:1 Semester Paper (20 pages), 1 Bibiographic Essay (8-10 Pages)
