A specialist course offers you focus and depth through specialisation in your area of interest from the start of your studies.

Some undergraduate specialist courses are designed to prepare you to practise in a specified regulated profession upon graduation. Others concentrate on developing particular expertise but may be applicable to a broader range of career options.

Double degree course

A double degree course lets you gain skills in two different areas of interest such as arts and law or science and engineering.

This lets you tailor your qualification to fit your diverse interests and talents and doubles your options when you graduate.

Double degree courses can take up to two years less than if you took the two courses one after the other. This is because the electives from each degree course count towards the other.

You will graduate with two distinct degrees.

Arts courses Find your passion and make it your career

Monash is focused on creating possibilities.

The key question is what are you passionate about?

This is a time for choices. And the array of choices in a Monash arts degree is wide and varied.

If you already have a sense of what you want to study: languages, international studies, journalism, music then one of our courses that allows you to specialise early would be a good fit.

If you want to build your specialisation based on the subjects that really spark your interest, then choose the Bachelor of Arts and start with areas of study that appeal to you.

Degrees in arts

We offer nine degrees at our campuses in Melbourne.

We also offer two diplomas. These are one year courses that allow you to add an extra area of specialisation to your degree. For example, you may choose to add a Diploma in Languages to your Bachelor of Arts and specialise in Chinese.

Bachelor of Arts (English Language) This course is an explorer’s journey through history to investigate how English has developed in many societies.

You analyse language structure, critically assess texts from a variety of perspectives, and develop advanced verbal and professional writing skills.

An arts degree is all about choices. You choose your area of specialisation and complete a number of subjects in that area. And you add in subjects from other areas to widen your learning.

At 22 Sean has achieved a lot. A passion for reading, writing and listening lead him to pursue studies and a career in journalism.

One of his most positive experiences at Monash came in the final year. “I was able to do three internships at WIn, Metro Media and Docklands news. These experiences truly gave me a taste for the industry and ultimately showed me that this was something I could do and do well.”

On graduating, Sean was offered a broadcast reporter role with Channel nine’s regional network WIn news in country Victoria. He also invests his energies in Educaring Africa, a not-for-profit charity he launched after living, working and travelling throughout remote Africa in 2012.

And Sean has plans for further study: “I have decided to undertake the Master of International Development Practice at Monash part-time from next year”.

Italy, the Renaissance, Art, Music

Study at the Monash Prato Centre in Italy Situated close to florence in the picturesque landscape of Tuscany, the Monash Prato Centre is located in the elegant 18th century Palazzo Vaj right in the centre of Prato. Against this historic backdrop, you can study units that have been carefully designed to take advantage of all that Prato has to offer, including the opportunity to learn from some of the world’s eminent scholars in their fields. There are over 20 programs to choose from and they run between semesters, so you can fast track your degree. All units are taught in intensive mode over two to six weeks.

Exchange We partner with universities all over the world – so you can travel almost anywhere and still gain credit towards your Monash degree.

Study abroad The study abroad program is similar to an exchange, with the main difference being that you choose to study at a university that does not have a partnership with Monash so you pay the host university’s tuition fees for the time you are there.

Academic pathways Monash College is the preferred pathway for students who aspire to study a degree in the faculty of Arts at Monash University.

Depending on your current level of study and future aspirations, you may be eligible for either:

Monash University Foundation Year

A pre-university program designed to prepare international students with the skills and knowledge required to succeed at Monash University.

After successfully completing the foundation Year program and meeting entry requirements and prerequisites, you will have a guaranteed place in the first year of your chosen arts degree.

Diploma of Arts

A specialised program designed to prepare you for success in your arts degree. During the program you will study the same curriculum and complete the same assessments as first-year undergraduate students.

After successfully completing Diploma Part 2 you will be guaranteed a place in the second year of your chosen degree.

Monash English Bridging (MEB)

This program is ideal for students who have narrowly missed the English language requirement for direct entry. After successful completion of the 10 or 15 week program, you will move directly into your chosen Monash course without the need for an additional IELTS test.

note: MEB is not accepted for entry into all degrees. Those who are ineligible should consider Monash English.

Monash English (ME)

This program is designed for students who require additional English language development and support to achieve the entry requirement for either the relevant Monash English Bridging or University course.Course duration depends on your current English language proficiency and your preferred destination course. Intakes for Monash English occur every five weeks.

English language pathwaysThe Monash University English Language Centre is the preferred English pathway into Monash University. If you do not meet the English language requirements for direct entry into your preferred course you may receive a conditional offer for one of our two programs.
