What is Scholars? How to Apply

The Arts Scholars Program is selective, and you must apply to be considered. Students admitted into the Scholars Program typically:

• Rank in the top 20% of their high school class• Have a 27+ ACT composite OR• Have a 1220+ SAT Critical Reading & Math

combined score

Students who are eligible for the Honors Program designation at Ohio State are ineligible for the Scholars Program. Please note: Only new first quarter freshman who begin at OSU during the autumn quarter on the Columbus campus are eligible to apply for the Scholars Programs.

Step 1. Apply to Ohio State at apply.osu.edu

Step 2. Receive your OSU ID via email (issued within 1 week of application submission)

Step 3. Apply to the Scholars Program at hsapp.osu.edu

The Ohio State Scholars Programs are selective, intentionally developed Learning Communities which provide you with opportunities for collaborative study. Each of the 14 programs is dedicated to a specialized theme that promotes engagement and personal growth. Additionally, each program features a first-year residential community designed to help students in the Scholars Program quickly develop a strong sense of belonging. They live together, study together, experience diverse opportunities outside of the classroom, and build relationships that last throughout their college careers.

What We Do Arts Scholars

In addition to exciting All-Scholars study abroad opportunities in Mexico, Brazil and Nicaragua, Arts Scholars create experiences through travel. Whether bussing it locally within Columbus to the Short North to perform or explore, or heading out for Arts experiences to vibrant destinations like the 21C hotel in Louisville, Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Broadway shows in New York City or the Warhol museum in Pittsburg, Arts Scholars connect to community.

The Arts Scholars Program enables select students with a strong interest in the disciplines of Art, Art Education, Dance, Design, History of Art, Music, and Theatre to collaborate using interdisciplinary approaches to the arts. The program offers students the opportunity to participate in programs that enhance their educational experience. These programs include lectures and specialized workshops, group excursions to museums and professional performances, community involvement, and domestic and international trips.

Arts Scholars form part of the creative community of Baker Hall West, the Visual and Performing Arts residence hall. Features include a large performance space, dance room, music practice rooms, and an art and design room.

Designed specifically to foster an individual’s personal and professional development in the arts, the Arts Scholars Program offers hands-on experiences with faculty and professional artists. Arts Scholars have participated in drum circles with Samba school instructors, created collaborative work with artists from Transit Arts, learned about set design from a Miami Vice design staffer, connected satellite imaging of Mayan murals with modern topography, created individual and collective collage works as a meditative practice and participated in printmaking workshop with the OSU printmaking association.

Enriched Learning

Arts Scholars participate in many forms of service to improve community connections, build experience for career development and to have a positive impact in creative ways. From serving as masked gate-keepers for the Short North’s fashion event HighBall Halloween, creating exhibitions in partnership with the Urban Arts Space in collaboration with artists with disabilities, connecting with the world through Global Gallery, or innovating newly envisioned mural projects through Arts for Social Change, Arts Scholars share their hearts and skills in myriad ways.
