OOn an overcast morning, gray light streams from the high windows of the City Hall rotunda in Mountain View, giving the stone sculptures

below a cool glow. The airy space is ideal for sculptures that emerged from the natural world. Many were created outdoors in the artists’ colony of Tengenenge in Zim-babwe, where the stone is quarried and the artists display their work among trees and traditional roundhouses. Now the sculptures have traveled here, on a long journey of ships and

shipping crates, for an important cause. The House of Stone nonprofit buys the art in Zimbabwe, then exhibits and sells it here to benefit Zimbabwean children affected by HIV/AIDS. Citing United Nations statistics, House of Stone board member Arnd Herz says there are a million children orphaned by AIDS in the country — out of a total population of 13 million. So the art sale money goes back to Zimbabwe, helping fund such proj-ects as early learning centers and two preschools. “They need preschools. A lot of children are head of their household

because their parents have died, so they need a place to drop off the younger kids when the older kids go to school,” Herz said. Other funding goes to the Vimba-inesu orphanage, helping with cloth-ing, staff salaries and other expenses. Older children are trained in farming skills to help them become self-suf-ficient, and the orphanage also has a corn mill that generates income, Herz said. Based in Oakland, House of Stone was founded in Palo Alto in 2001 by Herz and his wife, Susanne Mar-“Woman” by Joe Fombe

Zimbabwean stone sculptures are available for sale at the Mountain View City Hall rotunda. Proceeds from the artwork, which was brought to Mountain View by nonprofit House of Stone, will benefit children affected by HIV/AIDS.

tin Herz, now both physicians. House of Stone’s earliest roots were in trips that the two took to Zimbabwe in 1998 and 1999. The jaunts began as vacations, to admire Victoria Falls and go on safari. But the couple became enraptured by artists they met in the city of Harare. Modern Zimbabwean sculp-tors, also known as Shona sculp-tors, first started to garner an international following in the early 1970s. Their tools are basic — hammer, chisel, sandpaper — and the creations often seem simple at first glance. For instance, “Bird,” by Luxon Chikukwa, which is part of the Mountain View exhibit, has a straightforward, smooth shape. But the stone is dark and glossy, and the sculpture is inviting in its familiarity. A viewer can relate to the art even though it comes from a world away. Another artist, Conductor Kagore, creates cats out of stone which he makes gleam with a shiny finish. His work is also notably accessible. In the book “Tengenenge: Art Sculpture and Paintings,” author Celia Winter Irving wrote of Kagore’s work: “The face of the cat is the face of the cat, rather than a mask, the face of the moon is just that, and not an effigy. ... He removes the exotic from concepts of African culture and brings it back to the door-step, the home.” On their trips to Zimbabwe, the Herzes first wanted to bring back just a few sculptures for themselves, but the stones were too heavy. They decided to ship a crateful, throwing in some sculptures to sell. But they had paid such a low local price for the art that they feared no one back home would see its true value and buy it. The Herzes decided to charge more, but wondered where should they direct the profits. The artists already lived comfortably. Then the couple heard about the Vim-bainesu orphanage. The first big House of Stone shipment arrived in the U.S. in 2001, netting about $2,000 for the children’s programs. The organization became a nonprof-it group and grew. The found-ers chose the name “House of Stone” because it’s the English translation of the Shona word “Zimbabwe.” Overall, the group has raised an estimated $100,000 for the charitable programs during its existence. The Mountain View show, which runs through Sept. 15,

marks the fourth time House of Stone has come to the rotunda. Many of the people who buy the sculptures work in City Hall. Some of the artwork comes from artists living in or near Harare, such as Joe Fombe, one of the first artists the Herzes met. A photo on the rotunda wall shows Fombe at around 14; the couple encoun-tered him about five years later and bought art from him again. This year, many of the sculptures come from Ten-genenge, which the Herzes visited for the first time in 2004. Some 900 artists have lived and worked in the colony over the last 40 years. Each artist gets a plot of land, and many have left sculp-tures behind, serving as teaching tools for the next generation. Most speak English along with their local tribal languages. “There’s a real sense of history,” Herz says. “You walk through forests of sculptures.” Tengenenge artists represented in the Mountain View exhibit include Fanizani Akuda, who is inspired by “the round faces of his children, and his family,

the wide brow of the buffalo, the extended ear of the elephant,” as Irving says in her book. In the book, Akuda is quoted as saying: “I cannot stay away from stones, I cannot put down my tools, I cannot become someone other than a sculptor.” Tengenenge was founded by Tom Blomefield, a Zimbabwean sculptor who turned his tobac-co farm into the colony. With

the artists living simply — and many Western galleries coming to call — the c o m m u n i t y supports itself through the sale of art. The remote location leads to challenges. More than once, the Herzes couldn’t

drive away with all the heavy art they bought; the artists warned that the bumpy roads could make their vehicle break an axle. Also, the colony only accepts cash, and the high level of infla-tion in Zimbabwe means you have to carry more local currency than you’d think. “Every pocket I had was filled with bills,” Herz said. Even though House of Stone raises the prices of the sculptures to benefit the charitable pro-grams, they’re still surprisingly affordable.

Prices for better-known art-ists, such as Akuda and Edward Chiwawa, are higher. Chiwa-wa’s “Thinker,” a figure with round, childlike eyes, is priced at $1,500. Meanwhile, Freddy Masarak-ufa’s simple “Head” is $50, and Luxon Chikukwa’s “Bird” is $145. Strolling through the exhibit, Mountain View resident Lacy Rathbun says she has contrib-uted a bit more when buying at past shows. “The prices are too low.” She first discovered Zimba-bwean sculpture on a trip to Capetown, but the artwork was too heavy to bring home. “We came back, and there was a [House of Stone] show here. We were overjoyed. We now have three pieces,” she says. Fittingly, she plans to buy a few more and put them in her gar-den. It will be a full circle as the sculptures return to nature, thousands of miles away. V

LOCALS-ONLY EXHIBIT AT LOS ALTOS HISTORY MUSEUM The Los Altos History Muse-um is currently hosting a new juried art exhibit called “Los Altos Impressions,” designed to explore local art and focus on the artists themselves — namely how they work in, and relate to, our local landscape. The exhibit, which runs through Oct. 15, centers on the

community of artists in Los Altos and Los Altos Hills. The museum invited Tony May, a former art professor at San Jose State Uni-versity, to judge the work. The free exhibit is located at the Los Altos History Museum, 51 S. San Antonio Road. It is open Thursday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. For more information, call (650) 948-9427 or visit www.losaltoshistory.org.
