Bakewell Carnival gets off to a flying start on Saturday June 27th with The 13th International Day of Dance. This colourful celebration of music and dance showcases a stunning variety of 33 international dance groups, who will be performing at 8 outdoor venues around the picturesque town of Bakewell, from 11.00am to 4.30pm. Travel the world with dances from Ireland, France, Spain, Latin America, Armenia, Angola, South Africa, India and The Appalachian Mountains. There is traditional dance with folk and ballroom, contrasting with a range of upbeat contemporary dance. Many of the old favourites will be returning, including Timberline Steve’s Line Dancers, the ever popular Black Pig Border Morris and The Nottingham Swing Dancers.

They are pleased to welcome 7 new groups this year, several of which promote dance as a fun way to keep fit. These include Chesterfield Pole Athletes, Konga Dance Exercise, an Australian fitness programme inspired by a variety of dance styles and Fitsteps, which grew out of Strictly

Come Dancing. Also new this year are Nandavana, a classic Indian dance group inspired by its leader, Chamu Kuppuswamy’s love of nature, and in contrast, the all- female Hype Dance Company who combine a variety of styles to bring us the sassy Siren Assassins. Heather Clements’ group takes us back to the era of Rock and Roll and you can travel even further back in time with Winster Morris, a group first established in 1863.

artsMATTERS Bakewell Day of Dance is very much a community enterprise involving local groups and interests. This year, for the first time, there will be Tudor dancing in the courtyard of Bakewell Old House Museum and they are also introducing Bakewell Circle Dancers who will be dancing at Gernon Manor, a local care home. There will be opportunities to join in and learn a few basic steps of the individual dances or you can just relax and enjoy the performances – and it’s all free! Don’t be put off if it rains as there will be an alternative wet weather programme in the town hall from 12.00 noon.

There is also a chance to learn some steps in the workshops that run throughout the day, which will cost £3 for an hour long session. You can choose from French and Breton Dancing, Modern Jive, Konga, a high energy workshop, and Morris dancing with the Winster Morris Dancers . From 7.30pm there will be an international ceilidh with Vertical Expression, one of the hottest bands on the contra dance scene. No

experience is needed so go and join in the fun. Tickets £8, Concessions £6 available from Bakewell Book and Gift Shop. Profits go to the Goboka Rwanda Trust, a small local charity which makes a difference to the lives of people in Rwanda. For more information and tickets ring Jude on 01629 815469 or Di on 01629 812104. You can also visit our website www.bakewelldayofdance.co.uk or email [email protected]

The 2015 Ashbourne Festival will be arriving soon and the streets,

churches and venues will be fill with performances, concerts and exhibitions. Once again the festival brings the best possible classical and contemporary arts to the town for residents and its many summer visitors.

The 2015 Festival gets off to an energetic start 19 June 2015 with a tribute to Michael Jackson. Everybody loves his string of highly original hits, and a truly wacky lifestyle; he was undoubtedly one of the major contributors to the history of popular music. You can’t beat it, it will be a thriller.

It is swiftly followed by the fantastic and extremely popular two day international Streetfest, on Saturday 20 June and Sunday 21 June, the ‘festival within a festival’ that attracts street performers from all over the world to the streets of Ashbourne. This year has another stellar lineup with performers from the USA, Australia and the UK. Amongst an exceptional group of performers is Wet Picnic with the The Lift, a roving theatrical experience that envelops its audience, welcoming them into a world of captured moments, and creating a

surreal experience that you won't forget. The Smallest Theatre in the World, a two seater motorcycle sidecar, presents the epic King Kong and Circle of Two perform a magical trapeze fairytale.

The main festival has a wide range of performances, which includes a line up of well-known broadcasters; including the historian and popular personality Lucy Worsley wo looks at the British fascination with murder. The food critic, broadcaster and Masterchef professional eater, Jay

Rayner, presents his Dining Hell appealing to our interest in bad, not good, restaurant reviews and ex-local MP, novellist and all round celebrity, Edwina Currie, will tell us how to grow old disgracefully.

Local history is always interesting and, following the over-subscribed talk on Richard III two years ago, is one on the discovery of the equally exciting Staffordshire Hoard. There is also a chance to learn about the inspiration, work and legacy of local sculptor, Ronald Pope.

The always popular comedy night on Friday 3 July has another crowd pleasing line up including the radio and television favourites. The brilliant double header this year is Garry Delaney, a regular on Mock the Week, and the ‘chaser’ Paul Sinha. Whilst it cannot be claimed that Ashbourne’s comedy night is the route to success, regular audiences have seen acts that have gone from being great to being mega! Think Reginald D Hunter and Henning Wehn and book as quickly as possible not to miss this years stars.

The scale of classical music this year has changed with the international chamber ensemble Fiori Musicali playing a programme including work by J S Bach, Vivaldi and Corelli in the beautiful and a t m o s p h e r i c S t Oswald’s Church.

Other music and music based events include the living legend Geno Washington. The old Geno magic still drags them in and sends them home high. He enjoys much status on the Soul, R&B and Northern Soul scenes,

due to his unsurpassable reputation as a live performer. He is electrifying on stage and his love of performance (and of life) makes him an inspiration, a joy to witness, and one of the greatest frontmen from the latter half of the 20th century. At the other end of the music spectrum is not a concert but a fascinating insight into one of the most influential British musicians of the late 1960’s, Nick

Drake. Strange Face tells the story of reactions to the discovery of unpublished recordings by the singer songwriter. For the dancers amongst you Nottingham based ceilidh band Pandemonium whose high-energy music will get everybody moving.

A must see drama is Geoffrey Holland’s tribute to one of the great comedians of the 20th century. My Friend Mr Laurel is an intriguing, funny and often poignant tale of friendship, love and dedication about one of Hollywood’s great historic stars. Poetry is prominent again and the edgy performance poet, John Berkavitch, will lead a poetry workshop and the annual ‘Poetry in the Garden’.

As usual running alongside this is the annual Summer Exhibition of work by both invited professional and

selected amateur artists from Derbyshire. The exhibition will be enhanced by a competition for the best and most popular art work, supported by St John Street Gallery. This year there is also a month long residency by the sculptor Rachel Carter who will be developing new work in a temporary studio during June.

The whole festival will end with the free Picnic in the Park, which will feature the music of Pannissimo, a Midlands based steel band.

The Ashbourne Festival gets better and better every year. This year it has been supported by a record number of local businesses that have given money as sponsors and patrons or support in kind. Without this support and that of the Arts Council of England, Derbyshire County Council, Derbyshire Dales District Council, Ashbourne Town Council, Orchestras Live and all the local volunteers, the festival could not happen.

Full details are currently on the Ashbourne Festival website www.ashbournefestival.org.
