Next week, we will be celebrating philanthropy. Derived from the Greek words "philos," which means loving, and "anthropos," which means humankind, philanthropy is just that: a love for humankind. It is centuries old and crosses cultures. Conceptually it is not simply about "giving" but about improving the well-being of humankind. Each year, ArtsWestchester presents the Emily & Eugene Grant Arts Patron Award to “A Committed and Selfless Supporter of the Arts”. On April 11, at the Arts Award Luncheon, this award will be given to Victoria (Vickie) Morris – a philanthropist who distinguishes herself with her boundless enthusiasm for the arts. She

will tell you that the arts are "powerful,” "transformational,” "a life force" and "worth living for" and that philanthropy is the "magic that makes it happen." As a couple, Vickie, and her adored late husband Steve, took great pleasure in supporting the arts and the environment. Some of the commitments that they made together were to Parsons Dance Company where Steve was Board Chair and Vickie was Chair of the International Council; New York Public Radio where they co-chaired the Campaign for Digital Innovation and the Bedford Playhouse where they were enthusiastic donors. On her own, Vickie has treasured her work with the Katonah Museum of Art, especially her role in bringing the Jacob Lawrence retrospective to fruition. At the Museum, Vickie was Board President from 2007 to 2010 and Chair of the Board of Overseers. She now serves as a Trustee Emerita. In addition to the Museum, Vickie serves on the Board of Bedford 2020, a small-but-mighty not-for-profit dedicated to battling and beating climate change. Recently, she joined Storm King’s External Affairs Committee. Vickie believes that a healthy world, with access to the arts for everyone, is the world she wants to live in, and that it is worth her time, money and passionate personal commitment. To explain how deeply she cares about the arts, she cites the film Defiant Requium, a story about inmates of Terezin concentration camp — artists, musicians, poets and writers — who performed Verdi's Requium in the face of their hardship. She says "The singing kept them alive."

In March, Director of the Neuberger Museum of Art Tracy Fitzpatrick announced the acquisition of Approach by Eric Aho, made possible by a major gift from Lori and Yale I. Paprin. Ardent contemporary art collectors and avid supporters of the Neuberger, the Paprins’ signed the $40,000 check for one of the American artist’s large-scale gestural paintings from the DC Moore gallery in New York in consultation with Fitzpatrick and the museum’s Chief Curator Helaine Posner. Other new additions to the collection include works by Louise Fishman, Stephen Mueller, Ann Messner, Dulce Pinzon and Betsabee Romero. Along with Aho’s painting, they are on view in Recent Acquisitions through June 16.

ArtsWestchester is deeply saddened that Board member Carol Schmidt has passed away after being ill for some time. Carol joined the Board in 2003 and was a great friend to ArtsWestchester. She enjoyed the gala, always sponsoring two bronze tables and making lots of auction donations. A resident of Armonk for more than 48 years, Carol was a highly successful realtor with Houlihan Lawrence in Armonk. Carol graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Social Science. She attended NYU Graduate School as an Industrial Psychology major, and she graduated also from the New York School of Interior Design. Monthly Web Feature: Frank’s Picks“Frank’s Picks” is a monthly column in which music journalist, author and radio producer Frank Matheis helps readers, through his personal recommendations, to find their way through the many concerts and performances that take place in Westchester County.

April 7 Westchester Philharmonic: All-Beethoven Season Finale The Performing Arts Center at Purchase College, Purchase, New York Carnegie Hall is not far from here, but for some people it might as well be a million miles away. Rejoice. You can get equal quality nearby for an amazing daytime concert. The Westchester Philharmonic will roll out the red carpets for a performance of two of Beethoven’s most exquisite concertos: Violin Concerto and the seminal Symphony No. 5. World-renowned violinist Pamela Frank will be featured by Jaime Laredo and the Westchester Philharmonic. The sheer beauty of this concert should not be underestimated as we will be treated to Beethoven’s masterpieces by a world-class orchestra, and a virtuosic violinist who has been featured in by New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the Berlin Philharmonic and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic. Pamela Frank performed regularly with the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra. Her accomplishments were recognized in 1999 with the prestigious Avery Fisher Prize. She is professor of violin at the Curtis Institute of Music and teaches and coaches annually at the Tanglewood, Ravinia and Verbier Festivals. Since 2008, she has been the artistic director of the Evnin Rising Stars, a mentoring program for young artists at Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts. It simply does not get better than this. This symphony closes their 36th season!

The photo exhibition Modern Families, on view at ArtsWestchester through May 25, explores diverse representations of what “family” means through the works of James Van Der Zee and 10 contemporary photographers. A slate of events scheduled for April and May expand on the themes presented in the show. “The programs highlight the diversity of families in our community," says Aaron Paige, Director of Folk Arts. “Performing Families” is two evenings of music, dance and conversation. The first, on April 13, celebrates the bonds of performing arts with four family ensembles who explore the meaning of kinship, tradition and the arts. The second in the series, on May 4, is an evening of dance and conversation with two award-winning “families of choice”: The Legendary House of Comme des Garçons and Prestige. "Community Conversation" on April 10, features award-winning children’s book author and illustrator Todd Parr. He'll read from The Family Book, which celebrates the love we feel for our families and the varieties they come in. For children ages 3-7, the afternoon event encourages early literacy, enhances emotional development, and embraces multiculturalism. The significance of chosen families to LGBTQ communities is at the center of "One Stride" on May 3. The evening features a talk about queer kinship by Sarah Lawrence Professor Dr. Mary A. Porter, a screening of award-winning Director/Producer Stephen Winter’s short documentary One Stride: Chosen Family, a talkback with Winter, and a special performance by the the LOFT’s Pride Chorus. “James Van Der Zee’s Family Portraits: A Dialogue with Dr. Drew Sawyer and Donna Mussenden Van Der Zee” rounds out spring programming on May 9. Modern Families is anchored by the rarely exhibited works of James Van Der Zee. His wife Donna is joined by art historian Drew Sawyer for a lively discussion about the photographs, practice and impact of the Harlem Renaissance giant. For more info, visit artsw.org/events

ArtsWestchester, with major support from White Plains Hospital and Con Edison, launches the ArtsMobile in mid-April. It brings free arts programming to children and audiences of all ages outside the traditional classroom or studio setting. While the initiative is an extension of ArtsWestchester’s 30-year commitment to arts education, the ArtsMobile is a new concept for the council, which allows it to bring creative activities to youth and their families where they live. Teaching artists, including Barry Mason, Miguel Cossio and Vicky Youngman, will lead hands-on workshops in neighborhoods with little or no access to the arts. From April through October, the ArtsMobile will be scheduled to visit White Plains Housing Authority sites, Westchester festivals, parks and community events. Workshops will include: print-making, ceramics, painting, botanical drawing, landscape drawing and mask-making.

CAPTAIN MARVEL: Eli Gordon was so very helpful this week that I decided to put my good wife hat on and go to see Captain Marvel. Now I am admittedly not an expert in superhero movies, though I do seem to always enjoy them. This one is not only entertaining but LOL funny, with intriguing special effects, and a message of good versus evil. It is a great example of female empowerment with a superhero wonderfully played by Brie Larson, who embraces her power and clearly derives joy from it. The movie also illustrates that emotions are valid despite our hero being told otherwise. I loved the Stan Lee tribute and the warm audience applause. It was great to see so many families together with not a cell phone on in sight. Movies still have magic. Enjoy!

For the first time, the Lyndhurst Flower Show adds contemporary art installations to its standout traditional floral displays. In its fourth year, the April 6-7 weekend event features artists who focus on nature alongside creations from local florists. The works span material and genre. The Gothic Revival-style mansion serves as a backdrop for Portia Munson’s three-story floral print. The artist, who focuses on themes related to the environment and feminism, used gardening as a way to transition to country life when she moved from

New York City to the Catskills. Imaginative headpieces by Brooklyn flower-crown king Joshua Werber punctuate the show. His sculptural toppers practically beg to play dress up with viewers. Known for her luxe art terrariums contained by hand-blown glass that graced the MoMA and Lever House, Paula Hayes has been a fixture of the New York art scene for more than 20 years. Her work offers engagement through sculpture, drawing, installation, botany and landscape design. Brooklyn-based textile designer Whitney Crutchfield founded We Gather to spread her material love to regular people through workshops, DIY kits and commissions. Through more than 60 paintings and works on paper, including loans from museums and private collections throughout the U.S., the moon is the center of the universe at a Hudson River Museum exhibit through May 12. The Color of the Moon: Lunar Painting in American Art, explores curiosity with the celestial body and coincides with both the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission and the Museum’s planetarium. The show spans 150 years of art and is organized around three main groups: “Popular Moon from Myth to Destination” includes scenes of goddess Diana by Samuel F. B. Morse

and a painting of the Apollo 11 takeoff by Jamie Wyeth; “The Romantic Moon from the Hudson River School to 20-th Century Modernists” features work by Thomas Cole and Arthur Dove; “The Moody Moon from Forest Glades to the Open Sea” is preoccupied with spirituality and moonlight at the end of the 19th century with paintings by Edward Bannister and George Inness. “The prevalence of the moon in American art speaks to its universal appeal; it is something that unites us across the globe. 42 Films, Carl Reiner and More Featured at The Westchester Jewish Film Festival Beginning April 2 and running through April 17, the Westchester Jewish Film Festival at Jacob Burns Film Center features movies and TV episodes from around the world that explore the Jewish experience through a mix of narrative, documentaries and hit Israeli series. The festival opens with two simultaneous screenings: the New York premiere of the documentary thriller You Only Die Twice by Israeli filmmaker Yair Lev and the first four episodes of award-winning comedy series The New Black (Shababniks). A reception follows. A six-film tribute to Carl Reiner includes The Jerk, The Man With Two Brains and Oh, God! On April 6, following a screening of Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, the legendary director (and Bronx native) joins the audience for a Q&A live via Skype. Interviews made in the 1970s with women who survived the Holocaust are featured in Shoah: Four Sisters, a satellite movie to the late Claude Lanzmann’s 1985 masterpiece. Tovah Feldshuh’s role as the titular subject of the bio-drama Golda’s Balcony written by William Gibson was the longest-running one-woman show in Broadway history. Contemporary audiences who missed the run have a chance to see it in the festival's centerpiece: Golda’s Balcony, the Film. Throughout her life, Golda Meir is seemingly at the center of every major event of the Jewish people in the 20th century: the pogroms in Russia, emigration to America, Zionist fundraising, Israeli service, the Holocaust and the founding of Israel. Tony Award winner for Best Play and Pulitzer Prize winner for Drama, Proof by David Auburn is the story of young Catherine who grieves the loss of her father, Robert, a legendary mathematician who suffered from dementia and whom she cared for. As she determines if she also suffers from mental illness, her older sister Claire returns home to take charge and an ex-graduate student, Hal, makes a monumental discovery in Robert’s office. The revelation tests the sisters’ relationship and growing romantic feelings between Catherine and Hal. Dan Foster directs this run starring Kate Abbruzzese as Catherine, John Wojda as her father, Jayson Speters as Hal and Cadden Jones as Claire. An NYU MFA graduate, Abbruzzese has appeared as Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice at Center Stage in Baltimore. Wojda received an Obie award for Ecstasy and appeared in Hudson Stage Company's production of Kimberly Akimbo. Speters was on the international tour of Legally Blond and has performed at the Guthrie Theater and Actors Theater. Piano Duo Joel A. Martin and George Lopez Fuse Classical Music With Jazz Improv The Sanctuary Series continues its spring season with a concert by the Sonicals Piano Duo at the South Salem Presbyterian Church on April 7. Formed by musicians George Lopez and Joel A. Martin, the pair interweaves solo classical piano music with jazz improvisation to create a new genre of music for two pianos. Lopez and Martin are faculty members of Sonata Piano Camps in Vermont, where they met three years ago, and began performing impromptu concerts with two pianos, but without duo music. The artists have since performed improvised solo classical piano music, remaining true to the melody and overall structure, but reinventing it into a collaborative experience. Lopez, who is currently artist-in-residence at Bowdoin College in Maine, has performed internationally as a soloist with various ensembles and orchestras, including the award-winning Emerson String Quartet. Martin’s robust career, which spans more than 40 years, includes solo performances with the New York Philharmonic and collaborations with Grammy Award-winners Kathleen Battle, Fergie, Brooklyn Youth Chorus and cellist Eugene Friesen of the Paul Winter Consort. He also created "Jazzical” – a fusion of classical and jazz. The April 7 program will include: Rachmaninoff’s Études-Tableaux; Bach’s Italian Concerto BWV 971; a selection of Chopin’s Preludes and Carnaval Sonicals, which is adapted from Schumann’s piano cycle Carnaval, Op. 9.
