And After That, We Didn’t Talk is the debut album by DMV Rapper Goldlink. The project follows up the critically

acclaimed God Complex, which spawned the hit “Sober Thoughts”. First impression of Goldlink tends to revolve around his quick delivery and constant desire to curse more times than Leonardo DiCaprio in “Wolf on Wall Street”. This isn’t even an exaggeration, which is the crazy thing. Despite his lyrics not being safe to blast in the work place, he’s proven in countless songs that he has the talent to be one of the more popular and influential rappers of the time.

And After That We, Didn’t Talk is centered on a lost relationship. He doesn’t go into detail about who the woman was, which was probably best to not create his own version of “Courtney from Peach Tree”. Goldlink lays down several tracks touching on this topic, specifically “Late Night” featuring Masego. The song is

about his cheating ways with a woman who had faith in him despite what others had told her. The genuine remorse in these songs can touch anyone who has been in this situations soul, no matter the side they were on. This may be the best “I’m a cheater and I’m sorry” album since 2013’s “Born Sinner”.

Production wise, the album is amazing and a round of applause is well deserved. The album includes production from Demo Taped, Galimatias, Medasin, Tom Misch and Hasta & Milo Mills who produced the songs stand out single “Dance on Me”. Goldlink’s flow allows him to sound like a seasoned vet on both Hip-Hop and Electronic beats. He considerers the sound “Future Bounce” and believes it’s the future sound of music. His ability to ride these beats in an enjoyable manner is a consumers dream because it allows for a wide range of beats. The album also is perfectly sequenced and doesn’t feel as if the Executive Producer put his iTunes on shuffle. This type of cohesiveness not only allows the consumer to listen to a

quality project, but also allows Goldlink to shine as a great songwriter.

On the negative end, Goldlink’s DIY attitude goes against him at times. As mentioned, he is a great songwriter and sometimes it’s best to defer your songs to someone else. In other words, Goldlink can’t sing and when he chooses to sing on the majority of a song, it makes me want to press the skip button. Goldlink’s singing ability almost ruined his song with “Unique” featuring Anderson.Paak, which is a shame considering the song minus his singing his amazing. This is something that may not be a problem as his career continues, assuming he matures enough to the point that he is okay with taking a step back from the spotlight, even on his own projects.

Overall, And After That, We Didn’t Talk, is one of the stronger albums of the year. The excellent production, relatable song lyrics and charisma from Goldlink cemented him as someone to look out for moving forward into 2016.
