SragdhArA stotra is a Buddhist hymn composed by Sarvajnamitra in praiseof bhagavatI tArA. JinarakShita, whose TIkA on the stotra is popular,describes Sarvajnamitra as a devout bauddha bhikShu who, having givenaway everything he possessed, wandered as a mendicant. Once, while hewas on his way to the kingdom of vajramukuTa, he met on the way a poorold brAhmaNa who was in a very pressing need for money for the marriageof his daughter. The brAhmaNa, who was going to Sarvajnamitra for help,having learnt that the latter had nothing except the begging bowl and arobe, fell into great despair. Sarvajnamitra however consoled thebrAhmaNa and promised him to grant his wish. Meanwhile, the king ofvajramukuTa was told by a certain tAntrika, bhairava paNDita, that all hisdesires would be fulfilled if he could wash himself sitting on a hundredfreshly severed skulls. The king, who had already secured ninety-ninepersons, completed the number hundred by purchasing Sarvajnamitra, whosold his person for its weight in gold, which was given to the poorbrAhmaNa. The hundred victims were led to the executioner's tank by theking's soldiers. Finding no other means of escape, Sarvajnamitra composedthe hymn in sragdhArA meter in praise of Arya tArA, whereupon all thevictims were miraculously saved and taken to their respective homes.Heaps of gold equal to the weight of the victims remained deposited on theedge of the tank.
By examining rAjataraMgiNI, it becomes known that Sarvajnamitra residedin kAshmIra around 8th century A.D. VajramukuTa, who later became adisciple of the monk, has been identified by scholars as vajrAditya, son oflalitAditya, king of Kashmir in the 8th century A.D.
This hymn is recited devoutly by Buddhists to invoke the instant grace oftArA. Miraculous instances of assistance by the Goddess have beenreported by Buddhist enthusiasts. A Buddhist acquaintance, who is a wellknown master of Buddhist Tantra and an ordained monk, mentioned that hemakes it a point to recite the stava before undertaking rituals for deitiessuch as vajrakIlaya or mahAkAla to invoke the protection of the greattAriNI.
बालाकालोकता वरसुरिशर ा चूडाम ण ी-स प संपकरागानितिचररिचताल क य भ |भ या पादौ तवाय करपुटमुकुटाटोपभु नो म ग-ता र याप छर ये नवनुितकुसुम भर यचयािम || १ ||
दलु घे दःुखव ौ विनपितततनुदभुगः कां दशीकःकं कं मूढः करोमी यसकृद प कृतार भवैय य ख नः |ु वा भूयः परे यः तनयन इव यो न च ाकल मी-मालोकाशािनब ः परगितगमन वां ये पापह ीम ्|| २ ||
सव मन ्स वमाग ननु तव क णा िन वशेषं वृ ात म ये त हेण हणमुपगतं मा श या यव यम ्|साम य चा तीयं सकलजगदघ वा तित मांशु ब बंदःु येवाहं तथा प ितप द िधगहो दु कृतं दु वद धम ्|| ३ ||
िध धग ्मां म दभा यं दवसकर चा य णु ा धकारंतृ य तं कूलक छे हमशकलिशलाशीतले हैमव याः |र प तो या वपुलम णगुहागेहगभ द र ंनाथीकृ या यनाथं भगवित भवतीं सवलोकैकधा ीम ्|| ४ ||
माता प त यहेतो व वित बहुशः खेदमायाित पु ेोधं ध े पता प ित दवसमस ाथनासु यु ः |वं तु लैो यवा छा वपुलफलमहाक पवृ ा व लीसव योऽ यिथताथान ् वसजृिस न च ते व या जातु कािचत ्|| ५ ||
