JinarakShita, whose TIkA on the stotra is popular, describes Sarvajnamitra as a devout bauddha bhikShu who, having given away everything he possessed, wandered as a mendicant. Once, while he was on his way to the kingdom of vajramukuTa, he met on the way a poor old brAhmaNa who was in a very pressing need for money for the marriage of his daughter. The brAhmaNa, who was going to Sarvajnamitra for help, having learnt that the latter had nothing except the begging bowl and a robe, fell into great despair. Sarvajnamitra however consoled the brAhmaNa and promised him to grant his wish. Meanwhile, the king of vajramukuTa was told by a certain tAntrika, bhairava paNDita, that all his desires would be fulfilled if he could wash himself sitting on a hundred freshly severed skulls. The king, who had already secured ninety-nine persons, completed the number hundred by purchasing Sarvajnamitra, who sold his person for its weight in gold, which was given to the poor brAhmaNa. The hundred victims were led to the executioner's tank by the king's soldiers. Finding no other means of escape, Sarvajnamitra composed the hymn in sragdhArA meter in praise of Arya tArA, whereupon all the victims were miraculously saved and taken to their respective homes. Heaps of gold equal to the weight of the victims remained deposited on the edge of the tank. By examining rAjataraMgiNI, it becomes known that Sarvajnamitra resided in kAshmIra around 8th century A.D. VajramukuTa, who later became a disciple of the monk, has been identified by scholars as vajrAditya, son of lalitAditya, king of Kashmir in the 8th century A.D. This hymn is recited devoutly by Buddhists to invoke the instant grace of tArA. Miraculous instances of assistance by the Goddess have been reported by Buddhist enthusiasts. िध धग ्मां म दभा यं दवसकर चा य णु ा धकारंतृ य तं कूलक छे हमशकलिशलाशीतले हैमव याः |र प तो या वपुलम णगुहागेहगभ द र ंनाथीकृ या यनाथं भगवित भवतीं सवलोकैकधा ीम ्|| ४ ||
