As China Seals Overseas Deals, CEIBS Looks to Europe

Chinese companies, responsible

for 15% of global deals in

the first three months of

this year, are increasingly looking

beyond the country’s borders, with

internationalisation rapidly becoming

a part of the Asian giant’s New Normal.

Many of these deals have been with

European companies, so in May China’s

leading business school will host four

events in major European cities in an

effort to provide a knowledge platform

for participants from both continents.

CEIBS itself inked a deal last year

to acquire the Lorange Institute of

Business in Zurich, and the school’s

alumni have also brokered their fair

share of cross-border deals over the

years.

Two of these alumni are Pan

Xueping, the Chairman of Jiangsu

Jinsheng Group and Peter Pan,

Chairman of Chervon. Jinsheng Group

entered into a 50/50 joint venture with

German machine tool maker EMAG

in 2010 to create a new China-based

factory. In 2013, Chervon cemented its

position as a global player by acquiring

the 91-year-old German company Flex,

beating out 10 other companies from

mainland China, France and Germany

to seal the deal. The companies’

executives will be among the panellists

in Munich, on May 18, discussing

Germany’s Industry 4.0 and Made in

China 2025 as well as the potential

gains for both countries if they

effectively leverage these initiatives.

The venue is the BMW Group’s

Building in Munich.

Then on May 20, high-level

executives from Roche, UBS, ABB

and the Swiss-Chinese Chamber

of Commerce gather at the UBS

discuss Swiss companies’ perspective

on doing business in China. They

wi l l be joined by Switzer land’s

influential State Secretary Marie-

Gabrielle Ineichen-Fleisch. The State

Secretary was among the members of

Swiss President Johann N Schneider-

Ammann’s delegation that ended an

official visit to China in April with the

CEIBS-hosted Sino-Swiss Innovation

forum (related story in this issue).

Wil l China’s innovations in

Internet finance be game-changers

for the global market? Participants

from ICBC, Barclays, the Economist

Intelligence Unit and the City of

London will explore that and other

issues on May 24 when the CEIBS

series of events move to E&Y’s Canary

Wharf location in London. Co-

organised by ICBC, the forum will

explore the wider topic of renminbi

internationalisation and China’s

financial innovation.

Business opportunities for China

and France, within the context of

globalisation, will be the theme of

the final event to be held in Paris,

at Dauphine University, on May 25.

CEIBS alumni whose companies have

gone global will join French executives

from BPI France, Is igny Sainte

Mère and more to present practical

examples of the motives and models of

globalisation.

During these four events, business

executives and political leaders will be

joined by an all-star line-up of CEIBS

faculty such as Chinese President Li

Mingjun, a former diplomat turned

Professor of Management who can

speak on international relations and

technology management as well as

CEIBS’ overall strategy; European

President Pedro Nueno whose areas of

expertise include industrial alliances,

joint ventures and acquisitions;

Dean Ding Yuan who is an expert on

globalisation of Chinese companies,

M&As, IPOs in China, accounting

reform in China, FDI, etc.; Professor of

Economics and Finance Xu Xiaonian,

an outspoken Chinese economist who

can speak on China’s economic reform;

along with Sino-Europe Dialogue

Chair at CEIBS, Professor Romano

Prodi, the former Prime Minister

of Italy and former President of the

European Commission.

Swiss innovation and new opportunities for cross-border

investment were the focus of a keynote speech given by the

President of the Swiss Federation Mr Johann N Schneider-

Ammann at the Sino-Swiss Innovation forum hosted by CEIBS on

April 9. The President was in China for a three-day official visit

which also included a stop in Beijing, where the Chinese and Swiss

leadership had signed an innovative strategic partnership. The

forum was attended by about 300 participants from government,

academia and the business world.

President Schneider-Ammann said,

it was time to develop “innovative

strategic partnerships together”. He

added that CEIBS, with its “world-

class expertise in education,” has

a role to play in promoting ties

between the two countries.

“I am pleased that [CEIBS]

Switzerland thanks to the acquisition

China and Switzerland.” One study

project, which explored the issue of

The European Commissioner

for Agriculture and Rural

During the roundtable talks,

CEIBS alumni mentioned their

concerns about differences in culture

and legal procedures. Noting their

comments, Commissioner Hogan

assured participants that the EU is in

talks with the Chinese Government

to resolve some of the issues. CEIBS

Vice President and Dean Professor

Ding Yuan, who chaired the event,

briefed European guests about the

22-year development of CEIBS,

and the strong support the school

has received from the European

CEIBS Taiwan Forum

The flourishing O2O business in

mainland China is one area that

offers innovative collaboration

opportunities for companies from both

sides of the Straits and such synergistic

exchanges of resources and ideas can

help boost trade between both sides. The

point was made by President of the CEIBS

Alumni Association Taiwan Ou Shufang

in her welcome address at the first CEIBS

Taiwan Forum on March 24.

More than 300 senior business

executives and scholars from both sides of

the Straits gathered in Taipei for the event,

where they shared ideas for developing

future opportunities. Organised by the

CEIBS Alumni Association Taiwan, the

event is just one example of how CEIBS’

300 alumni in Taiwan have contributed to

the booming cross-Straits economy. CEIBS

Vice President and Co-Dean Professor

Zhang Weijiong along with Assistant

President Dr Snow Zhou were among

school leaders who joined the event.

MNCs Gather for Advisory Board Meeting

“People like you believe

in us and support the

school. You give us your

ideas, and this has made our dream

come true,” CEIBS President Pedro

Nueno told senior executives from 19

multinational companies who gathered

at the school’s Shanghai Campus on

March 10 for the 2016 CEIBS Corporate

Advisory Board (CAB) meeting.

Prof Nueno hosted the event along

with CEIBS Vice President and Dean

Professor Ding Yuan who spoke about

how CEIBS is changing its development

strategy to meet the new challenges of

the global business environment in order

to better serve the school’s students,

alumni and corporate partners. China’s

economy has grown over the past

three decades and Chinese companies

are beginning to globalise. There is a

growing trend of Chinese companies

acquiring or partnering with foreign

companies – for example ChemChina’s

$43 billion acquisition of Sygenta. Thus

CEIBS must adjust its strategy towards

creating a two-way knowledge exchange,

Dean Ding stressed.

Throughout the day, there were

also presentations by Professor of

Finance and Accounting Oliver Rui as

well as Director of the CEIBS Research

Centre for Emerging Market Studies

Professor Sam Park on some of their

latest research on key developments in

China’s business environment.

A paper that explores the links between corporate fraud and

managers’ behaviour, co-authored by CEIBS Vice President

and Dean and Cathay Capital Chair in Accounting Professor

Ding Yuan, has made the Financial Fraud eJournals Top 10 list of most-

downloaded articles on the Social Science Research Network (SSRN)

website. Titled “Corporate Fraud and Managers’ Behaviour: Evidence

from the Press”, the paper examines the role of managers’ behaviour in 39

corporate fraud cases that were made public between 1992 and 2005. The

findings in the paper suggest that professional audit standards that are

related to fraud detection strengthen the emphasis on managers’ behaviour

that may be associated with unethical behaviour. The paper was published

in the Journal of Business Ethics in 2010.
