Hamilton WatchesThe layout of the watches creates a messy, unorganisedlook. Even though this makes the products less exclusive, it allows the brand to display a variety of their products. This means that when a customer comes to buy a certain watch they may see a nicer, more expensive watch next to and spend the extra money, leading to more profit for the brand. Hamilton Watches is an original Military watch makers, However this PoS does not portray this very much in the way that it is designed. The colour scheme of this PoS does not fit in at all well with the brands history and the use of orange and grey makes the watches look of less value.

Guerlain FragranceThis PoS concentrates on one specific fragrance of the brand, this implies the idea of exclusiveness. This suggest that the product is a one off, limited edition product even when it isn’t. Customers are attracted by the large cardboard cut out at the rear of the PoS portraying a fairy like figure. This allows for easy recognition that this product is directed to the female market. The PoS makes the product’s price justifiable as it implies the product is a one off, limited edition product. However, as a PoS no prices are displayed which may turn away customers as they can’t be bothered to go and find out the cost of the product. This may be because the fragrance is quite expensive and the price may put off customers if they were displayed, furthermore increasing the theme of exclusiveness.

DiorThis PoS allows a large amount of the brands products to be displayed in one place. This means that the customer can get the majority of what she needs in one place. The PoS also has six draws at the bottom allowing for staff to easily re-stock the PoS. Some information about each of the products is displayed under each product, this means that customers are more likely to purchase them because they don’t have to find out the price etc. However, the PoS does look slightly cluttered and maybe there are slightly too many products displayed. Despite this, the variety of colours stands out on the sleek and modern background which catches the attention of customers.

SwatchThis PoS is very eye catching and can be seen as soon as a customer enters the shop. This means that the customer is more likely to go over and have a closer look. This PoS also displays a large amount of products sold by the brand and this allows for comparison and decision making to be a lot easier. The PoS is of a rather Art based design and portrays the brands clean and simple, Swiss styling. This also attracts the attention of younger customers. This PoS allows the customer to try the watches on which will mean that once they have tried it on, they are more likely to purchase the product. However, this PoS does not display much information on the price of the watches. This could turn customers away as they have to go and ask about the price etc.

SwatchThis PoS shows the brands newest product in the shops window. The use of the glass case adds to the idea of exclusivity, and relates to the idea of containing precious items in places such as museums. Also the layout of the products adds to the Arty side of the brand. The products displayed next to the main products show the customer another model of watch that the shop sells. This means that the customer, after seeing this in the window, may venture into the shop to have a better look, possibly even making a purchase. The products are clearly displayed in the PoS and show the range of colours that are available for purchase. Despite these things the use of the glass cabinet restricts access to the product. This means that the customer cannot try the watch on and no price is displayed for the product which could turn customers away as the cannot be bothered to go into the shop and ask.

WaterstonesThese PoS’s concentrate on one single product. This could be showing that this product is more special than the rest as it has it’s own, individual PoS. These PoS’s are positioned right at the front of the shop, as soon as you walk in. This means that these products will have been seen by anyone that enters the shop. This could be to make the customers interested in why they have been positioned there, consequently looking and possibly going on to purchase the book. However, these PoS don’t have the price clearly shown. This means that customers could quite easily walk past them as there is nothing eye catching saying that they are reduced etc. The ‘New this week’ PoS draws the attention of the customer by the use of the coloured ‘New’ sign below each row. This attracts the attention of customer due to the way that most people are interested and intrigued by a ‘New’ Product.

Page 3: As coursework dt

Oakley Golf ShoesThis PoS displays an individual product. This brings in the idea of exclusivity and suggest that the product is a limited edition piece when it actually isn't. The use of a image in the centre of the PoS implies that there is allot of technology behind the project. This may persuade customers to purchase the product on the grounds that it is worth spending the extra money as they think they are getting a product that has a lot of proven technology behind it. However, the use of a contained glass case also has a negative effect on the sale of the product. It doesn’t allow the customer to try on the product or examine it further. This could lead to the customer walking away without purchasing the product.

Samsung Galaxy S IIIThis PoS is positioned right in the middle of the room. This means that it is impossible to miss and the lighted text at the top of the PoS attracts customers. This PoS is very interactive. It allows you to fully use the product itself to get a good understanding of the product. The use of the ‘Hi’ written on the mount is showing how interactive the product is and almost suggesting that it will be like your new best friend. The PoS uses very modern, sleek, almost futuristic colours and materials. This shows the customer that they are buying an incredibly advanced piece of technology. However this PoS does not provide much information on the product. This means that the customer would have to go and ask a member of staff. Despite this the customer would be able to interact with the product so would then know whether they would like to purchase it.

Oakley SunglassesThis PoS concentrates on one specific product. This suggests that this product is a one off, limited edition product. This makes the customer think they are getting a more exclusive product when they aren’t at all. The use of the image on the front of the PoS suggests that a lot of technology and detailed design has gone into the product where actually it is just injection moulded plastic. This does not suit the brand very well. However, the use of an enclosed glass cabinet means that the customer cannot try the sunglasses on which is crucial when purchasing a pair of sunglasses. This means that the customer could just walk off as they would want a closer look before purchasing.

Old Spice

L’Oreal Men Expert

Old Spice was traditionally a Grooming product aimed at older men. Recently they have changed their branding to appeal to the younger generation. They have done this through the use of comical advertising and rebranding their products, (However still selling the original product). Old Spice is now aimed at Men aged between 20 to early 30’s.

L’Oreal Men Expert has only been around for a few years (Since 2005). They concentrate on Men's anti-ageing skin products. L’Oreal Men Expert is aimed at Men aged between late 20’s to whenever male anti ageing skin products become un-effective. L’Oreal men expert is aimed at customers younger than the faces of their brand, this is to make men purchase their product because they want to look like the men portrayed in the adverts when their skin appearance starts to decrease with age.

Fish Hackett London

Lynx Mr Natty

Hackett London is a expensive clothing brand based in London. It is aimed at higher income people and relates itself to sports such as Polo and Motor Racing. Hackett’s is aimed at customers aged around 20 to early 30’s. Despite this, Hackett’s grooming products are no where near as expensive as its clothing. This may be because people want to be using products of a well known brand, but do not want to spend a lot of money on such products.

Fish Soho originated from a Hair Salon in Soho, London. It customers are often fashion conscious yet unique and individual. It offers a range of styling products, which were originally used in the Salon. Fish is aimed at customers around 18 to mid-20’s. However, Fish uses a traditional salon feel, yet I do not think that this is portrayed well in their branding and use of modernistic colours.

Lynx is aimed at the teenage generation. Its main sale point is that if you use it’s products you attract more attention from girls. It uses a sexy, however also quite sexist themes. It is aimed at customers aged between 13 and 18. After this age group men often look for a more mature, more expensive brand of grooming products. It uses models such as Kelly Brook to feature in it’s advertising to increase attention of teenage boys.

Mr Natty is based around the traditional British barber shop. It consists of a range of products but also has a large selection of facial hair and hair moulding products. It’s aimed at customers around mid-20’s to late 40’s. The brand portrays it’s traditional roots through the use of wood in it’s branding and advertising and a old fashioned style of font.

L’Oreal Men Expert Research

Brand History

Customer Profiling

L’Oreal Quote: “2010 will give rise to a new male stereotype, the “Retrosexual” man, who reclaims an idea of masculinity based on old-fashioned male values, unashamedly incorporating personal grooming as a sign of pride and confidence.”

L’Oreal Men Expert Customer:•Aged between Late 20’s and to the end of when a male skin care product would be used.•A man who cared about their facial appearance.•A man who wanted to show his peers that he is still self respected, wants to look professional and sophisticated.

L’Oreal Men Expert use very simple, yet sleek, no messing around packaging. It’s straight to the point but still has that professional, sophisticated look. The use of Black, Silver and Orange adds to the theme of sophisticated and shows that the product is directed at more middle age men. The design of the packaging also adds to the theme of the technology that the products are based around. For example the use of the name ‘Hydra Energetic’ and the addition of the logo (adS) at the bottom left. This reassures the customer that what they are buying is based on scientific technology and actually works.

Design Brief

Design a new point of sale display unit for a male grooming company. The unit must display at least 1 product from their range and must clearly identify the brand. Possible brands are Old Spice, Fish, L’Oreal Men Expert, Mr Natty, Lynx and Hackett London. The brand I am choosing is L’Oreal Men Expert.

L’Oreal Men Expert has been around for a few years now (Created 2005) and are still using very basic Point of Sales along with their original branding. This may be a problem with regard to advertising the product to the next, up and coming generation of L’Oreal Men Expert customers. With a new PoS, sales would increase due to more potential customers being attracted by the presence of the PoS.

Situation

An example of a current, very basic L’Oreal Men Expert PoS. It is very simple and does not draw enough attention to the product that it is displaying. This could mean that customers could easily walk straight past the PoS, meaning that less products would be sold, resulting in a decrease in profits for L’Oreal.

Links FX: Establishing a need and Analysing the context

Logical: Logical design and use is very important when designing a product. There are lots of things that are very ‘Logical’ to include in the design of a point of sale. For example the brand name is necessary on the PoS to advertise the make of the product advertised. This needs to be clearly displayed on the unit so that it can be easily seen. The colours of the brand need to link in with the PoS itself. This is so that the brand can be identified in the future due to the colours of the PoS reminding customers of the brand. The product itself needs to be used at the PoS. This is very logical due to the fact that the customer needs to know actually what they are buying in order to make the purchase. But most important is the fact that the PoS needs to be clearly displayed in the location it is situated. This is important as the PoS needs to attract the attention of the customer. This can be done in several ways. One is that the PoS is positioned at eye level so that it is clearly spotted by the customer. The PoS also needs to be positioned near to the foot fall of the customer so that it can be seen by passers by that may be attracted to the PoS. It could also be positioned on the way to the tills so that the customer may pass it whilst going to pay for other items meaning that they may spend a little more money since they are already spending some.

Illogical: Illogical design and use is also very effective when designing a PoS. An example of this is that having a lot of fragrances close together will make it hard to distinguish the individual scents. This means that the user may need to spray some on a cardboard strip to get a good smell of the fragrance. This means that the customer may put the strip in their bag and later find it and want to purchase the fragrance, and if the brand name is printed on the strip then it will make locating the fragrance easier. The size of the PoS in comparison with the product itself is also illogical but effective. For example a big PoS with a small product suggests that that product is more exclusive and that it may be a limited edition piece. Also, if you are displaying an item that is interactive you may not want to make it so that the customer can interact with it as it may could give too much of the product before the customer has purchased it.

Need: There are several things that are essential for a PoS. For example the Brand must be displayed on the PoS. This is so that the customer knows who makes the product that they are interested in buying, it also advertises the brand itself. The product also has to be safe for the customer, it cannot be able to cause injury or harm to the customer as that could cost the shop a lot of money. The product also has to be secure on the PoS. This is so that it isn’t easily stolen and that it is prevented from theft. This is important for expensive products.

Keep/Scrap: Keep and Scrap is whether the PoS can be reused or whether it has to be thrown out. This is important because if it can be kept it will save the brand money as they don’t have to make new PoS they can just adapt the existing ones. This means that the PoS has to be sustainable and made so it can be adapted to save the brand money.

Form/Function: Form and function is important when designing a product. This argument is basically whether you want to make the product work really well but it is not as aesthetically pleasing or if you want the product to look really good but not as effective as it could be. It is very hard to get the perfect balance. It is hard to find a product that aesthetically looks really good and works incredibly well with regard to the function of the product. This means that there are very few products that a the perfect balance and many designers spend years trying to create the perfect balance. Which is more important depends on the type of product that you are creating. For example if you are producing a product that needs to look good form is more important. If you are producing a product that needs to work really well then obviously function is far more important.

X Factor: X Factor is that special something that is unique to your product. Something that only your product can do. This means that this can be used as a unique selling point which means that the product is more likely to sell.

Initial Specification

Aesthetics: Aesthetics will be very important when designing my PoS. L’Oreal Men Expert uses very modern, sophisticated aesthetics to relate to their middle aged customer. The customer would be attracted to the PoS due to the aesthetics being very simple yet eye catching. This would be through the use of the L'Oreal Men Expert colours which are Black, Orange and Silver. The PoS would have very sleek, linear edges along with smooth angles and rounded edges. This would create a professional look and make the PoS very aesthetically pleasing. The PoS would not be too over the top as this would not represent the brand very well and could turn customers away due to the vulgar aesthetics of the Pos.

Cost: Cost is very important when designing the PoS. The PoS must be finished to a high standard and look attractive to the eye but at the same time must be affordable to produce, especially if it is to be used in high numbers. If the PoS is reasonably cheap to manufacture then it will allow L’Oreal Men Expert to display their PoS in various environments without costing the company too much money. However, the finish of the PoS must relate to the quality of the product itself. This is because the PoS cannot look tacky as this will effect the visual appearance of the product itself, especially as the PoS will be considerably larger than the Product being displayed.

Customer: The customer is also very important when designing the PoS. A typical L’Oreal Men Expert customer would be a middle aged male who was conscious of his facial appearance. He would want to look professional in front of his peers, showing that he is sophisticated and respects himself. This has to be taken into account when designing the PoS as it has to attract the attention of this type of customer. If the PoS does not relate to this customer then it may lead to the customer ignoring the PoS thinking the product is not what they are looking for.

Environment: The environment that the PoS is going to be situated is also very important when designing it. Is the PoS going to be situated in a shop? Or will it be used at marketing events? This will effect the needs of the PoS which is crucial when designing it. This includes where about the PoS will be situated in that certain environment. For example will the product be positioned at eye level or lower down? Will the PoS be situated near the customers foot fall if placed in a shop?. The PoS also needs to suit that environment that it is positioned in. It cannot be too lairy as it may put off possible customers of that certain shop in which the PoS is situated.

Size: The size of the PoS is crucial when designing it. The size of the PoS must suit the environment it is situated . If it is too small then customers may walk straight pass and not notice the product on display. However, if the PoS is too big it may dwarf the product and make it look out of place, which could put customers off. Despite this, If you make a PoS a significant amount bigger than the product it is selling then this could add to the idea of exclusivity or suggest that the product is of a limited edition.

Safety: The safety of the PoS is incredibly important when designing the PoS. It has to be safe so that it will not cause harm or injure the customer as this could lead to serious consequences involving the shop where it is sold. The PoS must not have any sharp edges or sharp pieces that could cut the customer. It also has to be very stable so that it cannot fall over when knocked and possibly fall on a customers foot causing an injury. It cannot be highly flammable in case it was ignited which could have disastrous effects. It must not have anywhere where the customer could trap their finger or snag their clothes when using the PoS to view the product.

Function: The primary function of the PoS is to display that certain product. However, it can have several other secondary functions. These can include allowing the customer to interact with the product, for example test the product on their skin to get a grater understanding of the fragrance. This can also include purely advertising the brand that manufactures the product. Also, the PoS should provide information about the product that is being displayed, for example the price and the range available for purchase.

Materials: The Materials used in the manufacture of the PoS should be highly thought about when designing the PoS. The materials must make the PoS look aesthetically pleasing yet not be too much in terms of value. The PoS could be made out of Plastic which would add to the sophisticated aspect of the brand as cardboard looks cheap. However the PoS needs to be easy to assemble if it is to be used in shops. This rules out some more expensive materials such as some metals as it will make the PoS very heavy and hard to assemble before it is put onto the shop floor and it could effect the safety of the PoS.

Page 9: As coursework dt

Research and Time PlanQuestionnaire: To find out more information on PoS’s I will create and use several questionnaires to find out additional information about the use and design of PoS. I will create two different questionnaires aimed at two different people. The first will be aimed at L’Oreal Men Experts target customers, with the other aimed at designers of PoS for male grooming brands. This will allow me to understand what customers want in a good PoS and what Designers find effective when they design PoS. I will ask members of the public outside shops such a Boots, House of Fraser and Superdrug as these shops all use men's grooming PoS in there stores. I will write up the results on a notepad when conducting my research and later type them up onto my coursework.

Person and Product Interaction: To find out how customers interact and use the PoS, I will go to a store that sells male grooming products that use PoS and observe the customers as they interact with the Product. I will observe their body language and their movements and what they do with the product. For example whether they smell the product or they test the weight of the product etc. I want to learn the sort of things that a customer would want to know when using a PoS so that I can incorporate some of these things into my design. I will go to a shop like Boots where PoS are used in the display of male grooming products so that I can observe the actions of relevant customers so I can get an accurate representation of how the customers interact with the PoS. I will use a notepad to record the findings in the store then write my findings up when I get home.

Environmental Snapshot: I want to look at the sort of environment that my PoS will be used in so that I can design my PoS around this environment and make sure that my design is suitable. To do this I will go into a shop such as Boots or Super Drug and take photographs and notes about that certain environment. For example what colours are being used and the proportions of other PoS and objects such as shelves. I will also look at customer foot fall which will allow to get a greater understanding of the paths taken by customers so that I can decide where would be best to position my PoS. Similar to the other research I will use a notepad to record findings and take some photos of the environment that I can use later when designing my PoS.

First Hand Existing Design Analysis: I will gather 10 photographs of Existing male grooming PoS and use the analysis method of ‘Access Fm’ to breakdown and study each PoS. From this I hope to learn what other designers are doing, whether there are any trends with PoS. It will allow me to identify any weak points in the PoS so that I can make sure that this problem does not occur when designing my PoS. I will look for various functions and things that I could incorporate into my design. I will take photos in shops such as Boots and Superdrug of male grooming products to analyse for my research.

Market Research: To get a greater understanding of the market that my PoS will be used I will complete a market research that consists of looking at and analysing five other competitors of my product. This will give me a better insight into the type of products that mine will be up against which will help a lot when designing my product. I will write up my findings onto my coursework so that it can be easily accessed when designing my PoS.

Brand Profiling: I will analyse the brand that I have chosen to create my PoS for. This will allow me to understand and view their brand to gain knowledge. I will also look at their current branding to gather ideas and to recognise what improvements could be made. I will research the brand using the internet to collect information and images so that I can build a picture of the brand in my head. This means that when it comes to me designing the product I can design it around the brand with ease as I already know and understand the brand and their marketing. I will document the findings and then write them up onto my coursework.

Mood Board: As part of my research I will also create a mood board to explore the themes and ideas relating to my product and brand. This allows me to identify sources of visual information that will allow me to gain a greater understanding of the style of the product I am planning to create. It will also act as inspiration and allow me to find points that I could incorporate into my design. I will create a mood board by collecting a group of images that relate to my design, which I will get from the internet. I will present all these images on a single page allowing for easy interpretation and in a clear and organised layout.

Customer Profiling: For customer profiling I will explore the type of customer that I think will use my product. I want to find out what sort of lifestyle they live, their income, their likes and dislikes. I would also look a their age and their professions to allow me to build an image of the customer so that when I am designing my PoS this will be on my mind throughout the process. I would complete his research by writing up my findings with the use of images .

Target Customer Questionnaire

Designer Questionnaire

As part of my research I decided that a questionnaire would be a good way of finding out information and tips on designing a PoS. I decided that I should create two different questionnaires. One would be aimed at L’Oreal Men Experts target customer and the other at a Designer of Male Grooming PoS. This will allow me to ask different question, for the customer I can ask what they think and want in a good PoS, as for the designer I can ask more advanced questions about materials etc. Here you can see the questions that I asked and the answers that I received. From this Information I will be able to take into account some of the feedback and incorporate this into my design.

Questionnaire1. What draws your attention to a Point of sale? I think that it needs to be a reasonable size so that it is noticed and have

colours that are eye catching, either bright or sleek so that it catches the attention of a customer. The way that the product itself is displayed also catches my attention.

2. What information do you want to be shown on a Point of Sale? I think that it is always useful to have the price clearly shown and the brand that the product is made by.

3. What do you think makes a good Point of Sale? The Point of Sale shouldn’t be too flashy, it should look clean and simple and shouldn’t have too much information on it, just what is crucial.

4. What do you think makes a poor Point of Sale? One that looks really tacky and poorly built. Also, the colours need to go together otherwise it makes the Point of Sale look bad. Also, a really big Point of Sale with a small product looks out of place.

5. What sort of size do you think a Male Grooming Point of Sale should be? I think a Point of Sale for a Male Grooming product should be about 40x40cm, anything bigger will have a negative on the customer. Much smaller and it could be missed by customers.

6. Do you think that a PoS should have an interactive feature? Yes I do, I think that even if it allows you to smell the product or hold it. If you put the product in a glass case then customers may just walk away as they cannot be bothered to get a sales assistant to get it out for them. However, for a Male grooming product then I don’t think that it should be too interactive as it doesn’t really need to be.

1. What do you use to draw the customers attention in a PoS? There are a few things that we use to attract the customer. The main thing is the aesthetics of the PoS. The colours are crucial and If the brand or product ‘s name is large then this also draws the customers attention.

2. How much information do you usually display on a Male grooming PoS? Well, it usually depends on the product. When it comes to displaying the price it depends , if the product is fairly cheap and this is a selling point then we display it. However, if the product is fairly expensive and we think that displaying the price may turn customers away then we usually do not show it. This also adds to the exclusivity of the product. With regard to the other information it usually depends on the size of the PoS. We will usually put a description of the product and if the PoS is large enough we may also display other products available in the range.

3. What sort of materials do you use in the manufacture of PoS? It usually depends on the brand of the product. For example if you have an expensive brand then we would usually use a high quality plastic, something that makes the product look it’s price. If it is for a cheaper product then we would use something like cardboard, because it doesn’t have much effect on the product itself in a low price range. Other materials we would use are lightweight metals such as Duralumin or we may use some types of wood.

4. What do you think makes a good PoS? Something that looks interesting, so that it attracts the customers attention. It also needs to look good and more importantly make the product look good. It also needs to be proportionate to the product in terms of size.

5. What do you think makes a poor PoS? The PoS cannot look tacky and cannot be too lairy either. More simple PoS look far better. Also, if the PoS is showing more than one product, each individual product cannot be too clustered. Even though in general there are sometimes positives about having the products clustered it is not the case with Male Grooming PoS.

6. What is the ideal size for a Male Grooming PoS? This depends on the amount of products that are being displayed. For a singular product PoS then the PoS cannot be too big, I’d say about 40 to 50cm width x 30 to 40cm height. Any bigger than this and the product would look too small. For a PoS with multiple products on display it is up to you, however if it is going to be really large then it has to be proportionate to the environment that it is going to be situated in.

7. What sort of interactive features do you use on Male Grooming PoS? There are a limited amount of interactive features that you can use on a PoS. I think the most important is that the product can be sampled e.g. the customer can test and smell the fragrance. Also, it is important for the customer to feel the weight of the product if they are going travelling ect. On larger PoS we sometimes use interactive touch screens that allow the customer to view the entire range digitally, but these are usually one off PoS used a marketing events as they cost a considerable amount more than your usual PoS.

After I gathered my research I wanted to identify the main points of information that I had received. I did this by highlighting the key points as you can see on the right hand side. This means that I can clearly Identify the key pieces of information so that my research is effective and useful.

Summary of Questionnaire:

Need to include:•Proportionate in Size to Product•Eye Catching Colours•Clean and Simple aesthetically•Product needs to be interactive (Smell and to Hold)•Brand name clearly displayed•Proportionate information displayed•Description of the product•Fairly high quality materials•Looks interesting, something unique•40 to 50cm in width x 30 to 40cm in height•Proportionate to the environment

Need to Avoid:•Not too much information displayed•Shouldn’t look tacky and poorly built•Not too interactive•Materials should not be too expensive•Not too clustered•Not too big in size

Page 11: As coursework dt

Person Product InteractionAnother piece of research that I wanted to do is Person and Product interaction. This allows me an insight into the behaviour and actions of a customer when they are using a PoS. The significance of this is that it allows me to incorporate my findings into my design knowing how customers behave when using a Point of Sale. This allows me to design my PoS around the needs and wants of a customer so that it is consequently more effective. I found a few interesting things when completing this research. Initially I noticed that customers looked at the Point of sales that were more advanced and caught the eye of the customer better. One of those is that the customers like to pick up the product. This lead to a few other interactions. I noticed that practically all the customers smelt the product, and some even put some on their skin to smell. Others , held the product as they wanted to feel the weight. I asked this customer why he had done this and he said that he does a lot of travelling and weight is a big issue to him when travelling. Other customers wanted to test the build quality applying pressure to the lid to see how secure it was as they do not want the product leaking. Many also felt the texture of the product in their hands. As with the testing the smell, the majority of customers read the product description on the product itself, some for quite along time in large detail. After all the customers had looked at the product they often compared the price of the product with other products on sale, debating which product to buy and if that product was worth the money. Despite this no customer spent more than 5 minutes at the PoS before either walking away or coming to a decision.

Environmental SnapshotI decided that completing a Environmental Snapshot will help significantly when designing my product. This is because it will allow me to design a product the does not look out of place and suits the environment that it will be situated in. I went into Boots a took four photographs (displayed right) of the Men’s Grooming section. I did this as this is where my product is likely to be displayed. This allowed me to get a greater understanding of what colours, textures and the layout of this environment. From this I learnt that many of the colours used in the environment are very neutral and plain allowing for the majority of colours to be used in the Point of Sales without the risk of a clash and Point of Sales looking too lairy. I also learnt that there was a wall where all the more expensive products were situated (Top Left Picture) and that the cheaper, everyday products were displayed on the shelves nearer the centre of the shop. These products on the shelves were positioned on Point of Sales but they were more simple and not as big as the ones of the more expensive products. I also found that there were a few individual Point of Sales standing individually around the customers foot fall. These were larger and had more volume. These also had a large image of the brand positioned above the product. (This can be seen at the left hand side of the bottom left photograph). The general layout allowed for spacious walkways and a clean, non-cluttered look around the shop floor (Also Bottom Left).

Page 12: As coursework dt

Mood BoardI wanted to create a mood board so that I can gather a selection of shapes and colours based on the brand and the brands products. From my mood board I can see that the colours used are mainly Black, Orange and Silver. Most images include clean, linear lines with the occasional smooth, sleek curve. All images portray the theme Sophisticated and Professional which is key to the target audience of my product. One of the reasons that I completed a mood board was that I can use it as inspiration when designing my product, allowing me to incorporate some parts of products into my design.

Customer ProfilingIt is crucial that I complete a Customer Profile for my product. A Customer Profile looks at several things about the target audience, looking at their lifestyle, income and hobbies. This allows for a greater understanding of the customer so that I can base my product around the results of this particular piece of research. After completing previous research and analysis of the brand I can produce a stereotyped impression of a L’Oreal Men Expert Customer. This is the results.

L’Oreal Quote: “2010 will give rise to a new male stereotype, the “Retrosexual” man, who reclaims an idea of masculinity based on old-fashioned male values, unashamedly incorporating personal grooming as a sign of pride and confidence.”

Lifestyle: The Lifestyle of a L’Oreal Men Expert Customer is based around his profession, usually working in the city or an office environment. This consumes his working week with time on the weekend to participate in various hobbies and time spent with family/ wife/ girlfriend. He cares largely about his facial appearance, showing to his peers that he is sophisticated and professional and has a lot of self pride. He uses these products to ward off the signs of ageing making him appear younger than he is, or using these products so that in the future he holds of the signs of ageing.

Age: Age is very important with regard to a L’Oreal Men Expert customer. As the products are popular to be used to ward off the signs of ageing then it is not quite as simple as other brands. I came to the conclusion that a stereotypical L’Oreal Men Expert Customer would be aged between Late 20’s and to when the effects of a facial skincare product decrease and becomes ineffective due to the natural ageing.

Likes: A L’Oreal men Expert customer would be heavily involved in his working life. This means that he would like products that relate to his working life such as executive cars and smartphones. He would like technology and products that are very modernistic incorporating linear lines and sleek curves. Also things like high quality watches to make the impressions that they are still trying to stay young and look impressive by wearing expensive clothing and accessories.

Income: An average L’Oreal Men Expert customer would have a disposable income around £25,000 any where up to around £100,000. This is a wide range as the range of customer can vary a lot due to work place hierarchy which results in different salaries.

Page 14: As coursework dt

Brand ProfilingI also decided that I should have a better look at the brand that I chose, L'Oreal Men Expert. I decided to do this by completing a brand research . I did this so that I can make sure that the final product that I design will fit in well with the brand and not look out of place. I looked at various aspects of the brand and here are my findings.

L’Oreal ParisL’Oreal Men Expert is a specialist Men’s range made by L’Oreal Paris. L’Oreal Paris is a French company aimed at the beauty trend and their products are sold in 120 countries worldwide. They work on their philosophy: “To innovate and offer top performing products at great prices to the greatest number of consumers possible”. Their slogan is “Because you’re worth it” and they pride themselves on a heavy involvement in the fashion Industry. Their main selling point is that they are heavily based on scientific evidence and they are proud of this as it is one of their main selling points, that their products actually work.

Branding and PackagingL’Oreal Men Expert use three main colours in their branding. These colours are Black, Orange and Silver/Grey. This portrays the professional and sophisticated look that L’Oreal Men Expert are putting across to the customer. The brand uses quite modern looking styling on their packaging which represents their scientific side. Their branding appeals to men, however, through the use of models such as Hugh Laurie it also attracts female customers purchasing the product for their husband or boyfriend.

Prices/Where SoldL’Oreal Men Expert offers an affordable yet scientifically proven product. This attracts the customer because it actually works and does not cost a lot of money having a product that makes you look younger. To add to this the product is very accessible to purchase. It can be bought in any major pharmacy and shops such as Boots and Super Drug. This means that because these are very popular shops then the product will be seen by many people, often leading to a sale.

AdvertisingL’Oreal Men Expert use several famous models to advertise their brand and their products. They use people such as Hugh Laurie and Piers Brosnan to be the faces of their brand. This means that many customers would know who these people are and want to look as good as them. You can see some of their advertising below and to the right.

Page 15: As coursework dt

Market ResearchI decided that market research would be very useful to complete, as it would allow me to look at other products and brands that my product would have to compete against. It will allow me to identify unique selling points and analyse how other products incorporate their companies branding. This will allow me to adapt and design my product around existing products to create a better outcome. Here are 5 brands that I looked at the would be competitors of my L’Oreal Men Expert product.

Nivea For MenOne of the competitors I looked at was Nivea For Men. Similar to L’Oreal Men Expert they are a major brand with a large advertising campaign with recent television adverts including faces such as Les Ferdinand and David Seaman. This links in with the fact that they are the official supplier of the England National football team. Nivea For Men also concentrate on male anti ageing skin care hosting a range of moisturisers and face scrubs as shown in the image. The pricing is also similar to L'Oreal men Expert with affordable products aimed at late 20’s to middle age men. They portray their brand as a very clean and simple product which relates to their country of origin being France.

Dove Men + CareDove Men + Care again, is very similar to L’Oreal Men Expert. They have based their company and their branding around research undertaken in 2009. Similar to L’Oreal Men Expert the are targeted at middle aged men, however Dove Men + Care tend to concentrate on body sprays and anti perspirant deodorants not as much skin care and anti ageing products. Even though Dove is a large brand their range for Men + Care is not very big, compared to the likes of Nivea and L’Oreal Men Expert. Similar to Nivea they have recently signed a deal with the Welsh Rugby Union as their main sponsor. This means that a lot of their target customers will see the advertising at games and on television leading to an increase in sales due to an increase in customers.

No7 For MenNo7 for Men is Boots home brand. They base their range on channel’s No5 which is a lot more expensive. They still use similar branding and packaging which portrays a more expensive and classy product. They sell on the bases that they are very cheap and to the untrained eye they look very similar to Channel products. They sell a range of Serums and Facial scrubs for men. Similar to all of these products they are aimed at middle age men. Despite this No7 does not portray a very manly image hence its link with Channel. This may be to attract female customers buying the products for husbands and boyfriends.

LAB SeriesSimilar to L’Oreal Men Expert, LAB Series base their products on factual science and advancements in technology, proving that their products do genuinely what the claim to do. This adds reassurance to the customer that what they are buying does actually work. Their branding does not have the same effect as the No7, with regard to portraying an attractive packaging and fragrance. LAB Series has very simple and effective packaging, portraying their scientific side. This can be seen by the customer which adds to the reassurance that the product actually does what it says it does. This may appeal more to slightly older middle aged men who just want a product that works.

Kyoku For MenKyoku for Men originate from Japan and have used many traditional Japanese herbs combined with modern technology to provide modern facial care products for men. They have a slightly different approach to the market than like the other brands. They have a range of slightly stranger facial products including things such as Lip Fuel and Lava Masque. Their products are purposely designed for male skin and they are proud of the technology that the incorporate into their products. Their products are fairly expensive in comparison to the other brands and they have a younger target audience which they attract with their modern and sleek packaging.

First Hand Existing Design AnalysisI decides that I should complete some first hand existing design analysis to allow me to gather a greater knowledge of Point of Sales that are currently being used. This consisted of gathering a selection of images and using Access Fm to analyse each product. However, due to certain legal reasons I was denied access to taking photographs in shops such as Boots and Super Drug. This meant that I only managed to take a few photographs which meant that I couldn’t gather as much information that I had wanted too. Here are a few of the photographs that I was allowed to take and I will have to make the most of each photo.

Aesthetics: The aesthetics of this PoS are very basic and simple. It consists of two simple colours, Black and Grey and is made up of very Linear lines and shapes.Cost: This PoS would be fairly low in cost, as it was made of mainly one material. However, this PoS did look slightly tacky and cheap because of this.Customer: The customer of this PoS would be either the target audience, or a female buying for their Husband or Boyfriend as a present or a general shop.Environment: This PoS was situated in Pound Land which consists of a range of varying products, but this one was positioned with the other grooming products.Safety: This PoS was quite stable as it had a large base, however the corners were quite sharp and protruded a fair bit, causing a possible health and safety hazard.Size: This PoS was based on the floor and was fairly tall. This meant that most products were displayed at waist height with the top few rows being easily visible.Function: The function of this PoS was simply to display the products, it did not have any interactive features.Materials: This PoS was mainly constructed by wooden interior covered in a gloss finished polymer.

Aesthetics: The aesthetics of this PoS again were very basic, mainly consisting of three main colours, Black, grey and White. It includes simple linear lines.Cost: This PoS would also be low in cost, as it is simple and made up of only a few parts. This makes it loo very basic and not massively appealing. Customer: The customer would be anyone wanting to try the fragrance or anyone interested in purchasing the product.Environment: The environment that this PoS was situated in was also Pound Land who concentrate on cheap products. As you can see this PoS was also positioned with the other grooming products.Safety: This PoS was fairly safe as it did not have many hazards, the corners were fairly sharp but were not in the way of the customer.Size: The PoS was of a fairly small size due to it being located at the end of an Isle, it had a small platform that held the product so the customer could sample it.Function: The function of this PoS was to allow the customer to sample the product to test the fragrance.Materials: This PoS was mainly constructed of a lightweight metal with some plastic parts to keep the cost down.

Aesthetics: The aesthetics of this PoS consist of a small selection of colours, consisting of Black, White and Gold. It uses sharp, sleek lines incorporated into the PoS.Cost: This PoS would cost slightly more, due to it mainly being constructed of slightly more expensive materials and being more detailed in terms of it’s design. Customer: The customer of this PoS would be the target customer, or a female buying for their Husband or Boyfriend as a present or a general shop.Environment: This PoS was situated in Debenhams, which is a more upmarket shop, and this PoS was positioned with all the other male and female grooming products.Safety: This certain PoS is fairly safe as it is wall mounted, however it does not have any barrier on the outer edge to stop the products from falling off if they were knocked.Size: This PoS was fairly large as it was mounted against a wall. It had a few sections/shelves where different products were shown.Function: The function of this PoS is to display each product along with a few other products from that certain range, with a bottle of the product in the centre.Materials: This PoS mainly consisted of a gloss polymer with a strengthened interior, with metal border.

Aesthetics: The aesthetics of this PoS are quite simple, as it only consists of one colour and bold linear lines.Cost: This PoS would be fairly expensive as it is a large piece and has a large volume and height.Customer: The customer of this PoS would be someone who is browsing the store or looking for a new product to purchase, as a few products are displayed.Environment: This PoS was found in Debenhams in the male grooming section, along with various other PoS. Safety: This PoS was quite stable as it had a large base, however the corners were quite sharp and protruded into the foot fall of the customer, meaning that the customer could catch their clothing or hurt their leg if they bumped into the PoS.Size: This PoS was based on the floor and was quite tall and fairly wide. This meant that most of the products that were displayed were not easily see as they were hidden by the other shelves.Function: The function of this PoS was simply to display the products, it did not have any interactive features.Materials: This PoS had a metal interior and a fairly tough plastic for the exterior and the shelves.

Further Specification

• My design must incorporate linear lines which allow a sleek and modernistic look. However, some smooth and subtle curves could also be used, but the majority linear. I learnt this when completing my brand research and customer profiling.

• Throughout my designs I will use the theme of Sophisticated and Professional. I decide to do this when completing my Customer profiling as the target users life would be based around his city job and would want this to be reflected in the products that he uses.

• I will use the typical L’Oreal men Expert colour scheme in my designs. This consists of three main colours, Black, Orange, Silver/Grey which portray the theme of Sophisticated and Professional. I found this during my brand research.

• I want to keep my designs nice and simple as I found out in the questionnaire that cluttered PoS often put customers off. This will also make the PoS look sleek and fit in well with the Professional theme.

• I'm going to use fairly high quality materials to insure an aesthetically pleasing PoS, however at the same time I want to try to keep costs as low as possible, so that they can be produced in high numbers without costing the company too much money.

• I want my PoS to be positioned at eye level (but can still be floor based) in the environment that it will be situated in. I also wanted it to be located near the customers foot fall. I came to this decision after completing my Environmental snapshot.

• My designs need to be proportionate in terms of the size of the product displayed and the environment it is situated in. I found this out when completing my Designer Questionnaire.

• My PoS will have to be very safe and cannot be of any hazard at all to possible customers. This is due to the fact that if someone was to get injured, this could cost the company a considerable amount of money.

• I want my PoS to be fairly interactive in terms of holding and smelling the product on display. I decided this when completing my Target customer Questionnaire as this was on of the things that I found the majority of customers want in a PoS.

• When selecting the materials to use in the manufacture of my PoS, I want to use materials that will mean that the PoS is of a high aesthetic level, but at the same time do not cost too much money. This will mean that more PoS can be made for less money.

Development

This is the design that I have chosen to develop and eventually manufacture. Originally my design consisted as one main outer ring with a smaller inner ring. When drawing my concept I thought that the word ‘Expert’ could be easily applied to my design, which would create a stronger link between my design and the brand.

‘EXPERT’

I decided that I could easily incorporate the lettering of ‘Expert’ into my design with the ‘X’ positioned inside the main outer circle and with the ‘ERT’ being positioned externally to the right hand side of the design. This means that the ‘E’ can be created from the left hand side of the outer circle with the ‘P’ being created from the smaller, inner circle. This can be clearly seen from the image to the left.

Font of Lettering

For the ‘X’ and ‘ERT’ I’ve decided to use the font that is used for L’Oreal Men Expert branding and logo. I then had the choice of what case to have the lettering, Upper or Lower. Here you can see several examples of both Fonts. I chose the Upper case font as it relates to the clean, and professional aspect of L’Oreal Men Expert and makes the PoS look sharper and more contemporary.

Lower Case Upper Case

Materials for ‘X’ and ‘ERT’

I have several options for what material I want to manufacture my lettering out of. These being Metal, Wood and Plastic. Here I have looked at each material in further detail so I can decide on what material to use for my design.

MetalsFor my design I would use a metal such as Aluminium. I looked into the properties of aluminium and this is what I found:

•Lightweight•Ductile•Good strength to weight ratio•Attractive finish

The two that really stand out as being important for my design is the Attractive finish and strength to weight material. However, I am aware that aluminium is reasonably expensive and a lot would be needed to manufacture the lettering.

WoodI decided that a wood such as MDF would be suited to creating the lettering on my design. Here are some of it’s characteristics:

•Easy to Cut/Shape•Reasonably cheap•Finishes can be easily applied•Easy to get hold of

All these properties are useful for my design and the fact that it can be easily cut and shaped would be very useful for cutting out my lettering. Despite this, the one issue I have is that the finish wouldn’t not relate to my brand very well.

PlasticI could use a plastic such as Polystyrene. Here is what I found out about the properties of Polystyrene:

•Very Hard•Can be flexible when slightly heated•Can be coloured•Has a gloss finish

The properties that stand out the most are the fact that it can be bent into curves and has a gloss finish. The one problem is that it may look slightly cheap and tacky, and doesn’t really relate to the clean, modernistic side of L’Oreal Men Expert.

I have decided to use a combination of two materials for manufacturing my lettering. I am going to use a MDF inner covered with a thin layer of Aluminium. This is because MDF is fairly cheap and easy to shape and Aluminium will provide a attractive finish which will create more modern aesthetics.

Another Student in my class has pointed out the use of the MDF inner covered in the outer material may be considerably time consuming so I may change this when it comes to manufacture.

Page 28: As coursework dt

DevelopmentManufacture of Lettering

To create the lettering for my design I will need to cut them out from the original source material, this being the MDF and Aluminium. There are several methods of doing this but I want one that will take the least time yet do the job to a high standard. Here are some of the methods that I looked at using.

MDF

There are several methods that I could use to cut out the MDF inner to my lettering. The two I have chosen to look into are two different saws, a Hegner Saw and a Coping Saw.

I could use a Coping saw as it will allow me to make accurate cuts along a tight curve due to the use of its thin blade, which can be easily changed to different teeth size. The only real disadvantages of using this method is that Coping saws are limited to cutting within shallow frames and that this process may take quite along time to cut out all of my lettering.

The other Saw I could use is the electrically powered Hegner Saw. Hegner Saws are used for cutting curves that are too intricate for a coping saw or jigsaw. This means that I could cut even more precise cuts without the effort of using the manual Coping Saw. This would be particularly useful when cutting out the curve at the top of the ‘R’.

Coping Saw

Hegner Saw

Aluminium

There are a few ways that I could cut out my Aluminium sheet letters to attach to the outside of my pine inners. However, the first method that I came across seemed to be the most suited to the job. This was to use a Band saw, with a metal specific blade fitted, to cut the sheet aluminium. This is because it allows planar two dimensional cutting. This is useful as the majority of the lettering is made up of linear lines. However, my only problem is that there are a few curves in the lettering which means that a band saw could not be used. To solve this I could use a Jigsaw for these few curves and intricate angles. A jigsaw allows for these angles to be cut, and is fairly quick and simple to do.

Band Saw

Jigsaw

After completing this development I have come to the conclusion that I would use a Hegner saw to cut the MDF inner and Band saw for the majority of the aluminium with a few intricate cuts being made with a Jigsaw. I chose the Hegner saw as it allows for more detailed cuts and is a lot quicker to do. I chose the Band saw as it is also a quick process and the Jigsaw allows me to cut those curves on the letter ‘R’.

Construction of Lettering

Before I cut out my Lettering from the materials I have selected I want to be able to mark out where to cut so that I know that am cutting in the correct place. One of the ways that I though I could do this was create a cardboard template that I could lay on top of the materials. This means that the MDF inner and Aluminium outer layer will line up perfectly meaning a clean join. As I wanted to use the same font that is already used on L’Oreal Men Expert branding I could print off the lettering then create a cardboard template out of that. Here you can see the Font and what my template would look like. I would use a pencil to mark out the design of the lettering onto the materials then cut them out on the machines I have decided to use.

Here you can see what each template would look like and here are a few images of a model I made to get a greater understanding of the lettering. The ‘E’ and ‘R’ would be cut out as one piece, not separate letters. This would allow for greater accuracy when cutting the materials leading to a better finished product. An advantage of using templates is that they can be used again, if another was to be manufactured. If this was to go into mass production then it would be more suited to use a Jig.

Attaching both Materials

There are several ways that I could attach the Aluminium outer layer to the MDF inner. I decided that an adhesive would be suitable and would be strong enough to join both materials. I though that I could use an adhesive such as Epoxy Resin. This adhesive comes in two parts, a Resin and a Hardener. It is important to get the correct mix of the resin and hardener to achieve optimum results. A n example of an Epoxy resin adhesive is Araldite. This is simple to use and will do the job of joining both materials effectively. Some advantages of the adhesive are :

• 1: 1 Mix ratio•High shear and peal strength•Good resistance to static and dynamic loads and vibration.

Hardener (Red)

Development

One of the main components of my design is the Large outer ring. This is a major part as it incorporates the ‘E’ of Expert. There are several options as to what material to create this component out of. Here are a few materials that I could use.

The first material that I thought that I could use is Aluminium. An advantage of using Aluminium is that it fits in well with the professional and modern theme of the brand. There are also several finishes I could apply to it which would greatly improve the aesthetics of the design. However, this component is large in size and it would be very costly to construct this component out of purely Aluminium. I decided that I could do the same as the Lettering and use Aluminium as an outer layer for just the ‘E’ part of the design. This means using another material for the inside and the outside of the right hand side. After looking at possible options I decide that my best choice is to use a large thick Plastic tube to create the outer ring. From this I could then attach to outer materials to the outside through several methods. However I will still need a material to cover the right hand side of the outer ring as I still want a linear, squared outer ring, so another material will need to be used on the right hand side of the outer ring.

I decided that I could simply use a thin layer of Gloss Black Polystyrene plastic to cover the right hand side of the outer ring. The advantages of this is that it is quite cheap and easily cut into intricate shapes and curves.

After completing this development I have come to the decision to use a large Plastic tube as the main part, with the ‘E’ being created by using a thin sheet of brushed Aluminium which will look contemporary and fit in well with the brands theme. Then I will use a thin layer of gloss black polystyrene plastic to cover the right hand side of the circle so that the component has a greater finish and is more aesthetically pleasing.

Brushed Aluminium Sheet, Black Gloss Polystyrene and Pine (may need to use two layers to create desired width).

I have decided to use a large Acrylic tube to create the outer ring of my design. The first thing I will need to do, is to measure and cut out a section of this tubing. I will need to use a saw but there are a few options of saw that I could use. After researching various saws that I could use I came to two possible options. I wanted to look at the positives and negatives of using each saw to decide what one I will eventually use for my design.

Hack Saw

This saw is useful for cutting materials, accurately and can be used to create intricate curves and shapes judging the ability of the user. There are a few different blade sizes I can chose from to create the optimum cut. The only disadvantage of this is that it would take quite along time and it would be quite hard to obtain a perfectly straight cut after sawing for a long time. It is also quite easy to go off line and then it is very hard to correct this mistake.

Band Saw

This is my other option of saw that I could use to cut out my large Acrylic tubing. This saw allows for very linear, straight line cuts to a high level of accuracy. It leaves a high finish cut which has minimal waste and minimal effect to the aesthetics. Another advantage of using this type of saw is that it is a fairly quick process and does not tire the user after time as it is an electrically powered saw. This would be very useful if the product had to be made in high numbers.

After completing this development I have decided that I am going to use a Band saw to cut my Large Acrylic tubing to the correct size. The main reasons for this is that It cuts very planar two dimensional lines which is what I need to have to achieve a clean and accurate cut.

It was pointed out that I will need to make sure that this piece of Aluminium is filed and sanded so that it does not create a sharp edge which could be a safety hazard on my design.

Page 30: As coursework dt

DevelopmentAfter researching the cost of using a section of Acrylic Tubing for my large outer ring I discovered that the cost of buying preformed Acrylic tubing was very expensive and I would not be able to afford the cost of the tubing as the one I would use is very expensive. I started to think of other ways that I could create this outer ring with still using Acrylic as the material.

One of the ways that I thought I could do this is by manufacturing a MDF Jig In which I could bend a sheet of Black Gloss Acrylic around to create my outer ring. I would cut out a Large outer ring in MDF which would be the correct width and diameter for the outer ring on my design. I would then sand this down so that the surface is nice and smooth so this doesn’t effect to finish of the Acrylic when it is bent.

There are several advantages of using this method. One is that using the MDF jig and using the Acrylic sheet dramatically reduces the cost of manufacturing this certain component. Also, I can easily change the size of the outer ring by simply cutting out a new jig and using another sheet of plastic. This is not a problem as MDF is very cheap and it will not take too much time to create another mould.

To bend the plastic around the MDF jig I will use a Strip Heater /Line Bender to warm the Acrylic to a temperature in which it can be bent with ease. This process may take time but is fairly simple and will lead to a good final component. After the Acrylic has been bent around the Jig I will join each end together to create a full outer ring for my design.

Here are a few images of a model I created of the MDF Jig that I will use to bend my Acrylic sheet into a full outer ring for my design. This is obviously not to scale but it did allow me to get a better understanding of what I need to do to create a high quality component.

There are several ways that I can attach my Brushed Aluminium sheet and my Polished Acrylic to my large Acrylic tube. However, I want to use something that will fit in really well with the contemporary side of my brand. After thinking about a few possibilities I thought that using some sort of Bolt would create a good Aesthetical effect. This would also fit in well with the aspect of Science and Technology in my brand. I decided to look at several different types of bolt and chose what one would suit my design the most.

Hex BoltA Hex bolt has a hexagonal “Hex” shaped head. They usually have a fully threaded shaft or sometimes a Hex bolt may only have a partially threaded shaft. These Bolts can be used with either Hex Nuts but can also be used with Cap and Acorn Nuts. The only problem with using Cap or Acorn nuts is that the bolt may have to be cut to the correct size which could prolong the manufacturing process.

Hex Bolts (Various) Hex Nut Cap/Acorn Nut

Chicago Bolt

Chicago Bolts have threading along the outside of a cylindrical shaft (Similar to a normal Bolt), the Chicago bolt has a hollow shaft that is smooth on the outside and threaded along its interior. These two components combine to create a strong sealed bolt. These bolts often have smooth rounded heads but have to be correctly measured to ensure a solid connection.

Two examples of different sized Chicago

Bolts.

After completing this piece of development I have come to the decision that I want to use Hex Nuts and Bolts on my design. The reason for this is that they look quite industrial and I think that will contrast well with the Brushed Aluminium. However, I like the look and purpose of Chicago bolts and may use them somewhere else on my design later on in development.

Even though this technique is do-able a few people who have used the same method before has pointed out that it is very difficult to produce a perfectly round shape.

Page 31: As coursework dt

DevelopmentAnother component that will be part of the large outer ring on my design is the small shelf on the left that one of the products will actually sit on. This component is key as it will also make up part of the ‘E’ in ‘Expert’. There are several ways I could manufacture this component, but I want a quick and simple solution as this part is not very complicated. I thought that I could simply create a MDF block, which could be easily shaped and attached to the large Acrylic ring. This block could then be easily covered in thin aluminium sheet to make it fit in better aesthetically with the brand and match the rest of the outer ring.

MDF Shelf

This will be mounted onto the left hand side of the outer ring on my design. I wanted to use MDF as it can easily be shaped and will need to be on the left hand side, due to the curvature of the outer ring, if it is to have a nice clean connection. I can use a Hegner saw to cut this component out of a MDF block, which will allow me greater accuracy when cutting the curved side due to the Hegner saw having a thin blade which is good for curves.

Here you can see a small diagram of the shape of the component. The curvature on the left is not to scale as it has been exaggerated for the purpose of showing the need for a curved side. Also I would add two small parts above and below to add more stability and to ensure a strong connection.

This component would be covered in a thin layer of aluminum sheet so that it matches the rest of the outer ring. I would do this exactly the same way as the lettering on my design which has been shown in a previous development. However I would make cuts in the Aluminum on the top of the component which will allow the product to ever so slightly sit into the component. This will make the product more stable and less likely to be knocked off its stand. Here you can see a Birds eye view of the component and you can see the cut that would need to be made, depending on the shape of the base of the product.

Top layer of Aluminium for product shelf.

Along with the large outer ring of my design the base is also a major component of my design. This is an important part as the main body of the design and the lettering both have to attach to this component. There are a few ways that I could manufacture this part, but I want a method that will be of a sound and sturdy construction, yet having high quality aesthetics that fit in well with L’Oreal Men Expert.

For this component I have decided that I want to use a similar technique again to the lettering and the shelf I have explained previously. This means that I want to use a MDF Wooden Inner, as it is stable, cheap and easy to cut to the correct size. I then want to cover this MDF inner with a layer of Gloss Black Acrylic plastic. This means that my base will be stable and cheap, yet still having good aesthetic qualities through the use of the Acrylic layer. To allow the main body of my design to sit securely onto the base I will cut out spaces similar to what I have done on the small shelf so that the components will have a better connection when joined.

Here you can see a birds eye view of this top sheet of Aluminium and you can see the position of the cut-outs. You can also see where the other components join to the Base.

Another crucial component to my design is the supports that mount either side of the large outer Acrylic tube. These hold this tube in position and strengthen its join to the Base. After looking at the rest of the main components I will look at these components and decide how I am going to manufacture them.

Basic diagram of the shape of the supports for the main body of the design.

I chose this method as it would allow me to easily create the angled side that would be needed to fit onto the outer ring, however using the MDF does not fit in that well with the theme of the brand.

Page 32: As coursework dt

DevelopmentThe base of my design will be stable due to its size and the fact that it is proportionate to the rest of my design so there is no chance of it becoming unbalanced and falling over. As stated in my initial and further specification my design will be positioned at waist height so that it can be easily seen and interacted with. This means that it will need to be stable with regard to horizontal movement on the surface that it is placed on and being that my Base is made out of smooth MDF this may be a problem. After thinking about this problem I decided that using Rubber Feet will increase surface friction meaning that there is no chance of my design sliding around. There are several types of rubber feet that I could use and I decided that I wanted to look at a few before choosing the one that I want to use on my design.I have decided that I would want to

use feet that are low in profile, yet have high levels of grip. I could use either of the top two feet due to the fact they are not too high yet will provide sufficient grip. They can also easily be screwed into the bottom of my Base.

After manufacturing the Base and Large Outer Ring as two separate components I will want to join them together somehow to produce the PoS. This part is crucial as these are the two largest components on my design and the stability of the Large Outer ring is dependant on the structural integrity of the Base and it’s connection. After talking to my Design Technology teacher he suggested that I could either drill holes through the Acrylic outer ring and into the MDF supports and Base and then use Screws to attach the two large components together. He also suggested that I could use an Adhesive as there is a large surface area at the join, which would ensure a strong bond and connection between the two components.

Adhesive

I could use an Adhesive such as Epoxy Resin to join these two components together. This is because it is a very strong Adhesive and is largely suited to attaching Plastic to Wood. This method would be fairly quick but I would have to take great care as I would only have one chance to ensure a good join and once stuck It would be almost possible to separate both components and then rejoin them, still with a strong connection.

Screws

I could also use screws to attach these two components together. I would use a drill to drill holes through both components. This is good as I will only have to drill through the outer layer of the Acrylic ring and into the MDF supports and base which will provide a strong bond to be made as the screw will connect tightly with the MDF. If I do make a mistake I can always re-drill the hole as these screws will not be seen as they will be hidden from view by the Aluminium layer on the outside of the large Acrylic tube.

The area highlighted in Red is the join that will combine both components. The red arrows show the direction and position of where the screws would go.

After completing this development I have decide that I will use screws to attach these two components together. I chose screws as it will allow for a more sturdy and solid connection and If I make a mistake it can be easily corrected.

Page 33: As coursework dt

Development

The ‘X’ of my ‘Expert’ that will be situated inside the large Acrylic outer ring will also need to be attached. This component will be attached to the Large outer ring using a strong and secure method. After completing the previous development I have discovered that the use of screws will ensure a strong and stable join. The ‘X’ is made of a MDF construction so this will mean that I can easily drill holes that will allow for the component to be screwed into place.

To ensure a clean join I will shape the bottom left hand leg so that it fits tightly to the large outer ring. Because the outer ring is curved I will need to cut this curve out exactly on this leg of the ‘X’. It is important to ensure a accurate cut so that there is the optimum amount of surface area for the join. Here you can see a diagram of the ‘X’ and you can see where the curve would need to be cut on the bottom left hand leg.

Similar to connecting the main outer ring to the Base, I have decided that it would be a good idea to use screws to join the ‘X’ to the main outer ring. This will provide a secure connection as the screw will easily be able to anchor into the MDF well. This is a simple and easy process and should not take too much time which means that it is good if multiple need to be produced.

The arrow shows the direction that the screws would be drilled into the design.

The large block under the ‘P’ of ‘Expert’ is an important part of my design. This is because it supports the ‘P’ and is what all the information and product description is written on. However as this component does not need to be complicated and only has a simple roll I want to manufacture it in such a way that it does not take too long to manufacture, yet had a high level of accuracy and a high quality finish.

I though that I could simply manufacture the majority of this component out of MDF. This is because I will need to create the curve on the right hand side and bottom of the component. This is so that it fits nicely into the curvature of the large outer ring on my design. I chose MDF as it is cheap and It will allow me to create this curve with the use of a Saw, and to a high level of accuracy. This entire process should be fairly quick and easy to do.

As this component will need a perfect curve, I will need a saw that can cut intricate curves, with a high level of accuracy and precision. If this cut is inaccurate this component will not be able to sit inside the large outer ring, with a good secure join. Earlier on in development I found out that a Hegner saw is very good at cutting these types of curve. The left hand image shows the blade of a Hegner saw and you can see that due to it’s thinness it’s ideal for cutting curves and intricate cuts.

Page 34: As coursework dt

DevelopmentAttaching this component to the large outer ring will be incredibly important. This is because it is very important that this component sits perfectly onto the surface of the outer ring. It also needs to be perfectly straight vertically as there are several other components that attach to it. Earlier during development, I looked at using screws as a method of attachment. I think this would work well with this component as well, as I can simply drill holes through the Acrylic outer layer straight into the MDF component. This would create a strong connection between the MDF component and the large outer ring of my design.

An example of the sort of screw that I could use to attach the MDF component to the outer ring of my design.

Here you can see the possible areas that Screws could be drilled into these components. As it is a large block of MDF I would use multiple screws to ensure a solid connection.

However, creating this component out of MDF may be practical, but the aesthetical qualities of MDF do not fit in with the brand, L’Oreal Men Expert. After thinking about possible ways that I could solve this I decided that I should do what I have done with previous components similar to this one. This means that I will cover the MDF Block in Orange Acrylic plastic. This will improve the aesthetics of this component yet this process will be fairly quick and easy to do.

As only two sides of this component will be on show, I will only need to cut out parts for the top and front of this component. I will use a Hegner saw to cut these parts as it will allow me to get an accurate cut for the curve on the front piece of Acrylic.

This then brings up the matter of how I am going to attach these two pieces of Acrylic sheet onto my MDF component. In previous development’s I learnt that I can simply use and adhesive such as Epoxy Resin, as it is suited to attaching plastics to wood. This is a quick and easy process, which will keep time spent doing it to a minimum.

I chose Orange Acrylic as it is an easy material to work with and can be cut and sanded easily. I wanted to use Orange as I learnt in my Brand research that it is a main colour for L’Oreal Men Expert and it will also add contrast to the Aluminium sheet and Gloss Black Acrylic.

As I stated in previous developments this component is very important to my design. This is because it is where all the information and product description is positioned. There were several ways I could do this but I thought that I could print off the design for the product description and then layer it between the Orange Acrylic already on the component and then lay a thin sheet of clear Acrylic over the top. I could then drill through both layers of Acrylic and into the MDF and use screws to attach all the parts together. The use of the screws would fit in well with the science and technology themes behind the brand and would improve the components aesthetical qualities.

Here you can see a side view of the front of this component. You can see the two layers of acrylic with the blue line representing the printed product description. The arrows show where the screws would be inserted into the component.

My friend has pointed out that if I were to make the whole of this component out of plastic then I could simply use a adhesive to attach it into the correct place.

Page 35: As coursework dt

DevelopmentThe next main component of my design is the smaller inner circle. This part is important as it makes up the ‘P’ in ‘Expert’ and most importantly it is where the other product is displayed in the design. After, thinking if there was any other ways that I could make this component I decided that I should use the same technique and process used to manufacture the larger outer ring. The same as the outer ring, I will need to manufacture a MDF jig (only this time smaller).

I will use a heat gun to slowly melt a sheet of Black Gloss Acrylic to a suitable temperature that I can bend around the MDF Jib until a complete ring is created. I will then attach the two ends so that it completes the full inner ring.

Here you can see the Acrylic sheet being bent around the MDF mould. This process will take quite along time to complete, but it will be significantly cheaper than buying a already manufactured Acrylic tube.

This is what it should look like after I have finished bending the Acrylic sheet. The component should be able to be easily removed from the Jig as I will sand the jig so that it is nice and smooth.

Using a Heat Gun will allow me to heat the Acrylic sheet to the correct temperature quickly without melting the material. I will have to heat a section then bend it around the MDF jig and then complete this process several times to fully bend the whole of the smaller inner ring for my design. I will have to take care during this process as I do not want to bend the Acrylic out of shape even the slightest as it may mean that I may not be able join both ends together with a clean connection.

Another component that is attached to this smaller inner ring is the vertical strut that supports the inner ring. This component is also important as it creates part of the ‘P’ in ‘Expert’. This part is fairly simple and does not have any interactive feature or major purpose in the design itself. This means that I want to manufacture this part as quickly as possible, yet still make sure that it has a high level of finish. It is also important that this component matches the smaller inner circle, so that the shape of the ‘P’ in ‘Expert’ can be clearly distinguished. After taking all this into account I decided

that I should use the same method that I used for the product description and information component. This means that I will mark out and measure the shape and size of the component onto a block of MDF and then use a Hegner saw to cut this out. This will allow me to create the curve that is needed for the top of this component to sit under the curved inner ring so that a tight and accurate join is created. I will then use Black Gloss Acrylic plastic and cut out panels for the front and both sides of this component. I will then use a adhesive such as Epoxy resin to attach these Acrylic panels to the MDF component. This allows for the component to fit in with the rest of the ‘P’ and the Brand L’Oreal Men Expert.

Here you can see the shape of the component that needs to be cut out of the MDF. You can see the curve at the top which will need to be perfect to ensure a correct fit with the smaller inner ring.

Here you can see the position of the component when it is incorporated into the design. You can see that it is key for holding the smaller inner circle in place and supporting that component.

After completing this development I now know that I can easily manufacture this component and that its construction should not take too long to do. After this component has been created it should fit in really well with the smaller inner circle and the product information component. The aesthetics should relate well with my brand theme.

After I have cut out and sanded this MDF component I can then attach the Acrylic sheet with the use of Epoxy Resin so that this component matches the inner ring.

Someone in my class has suggested that it may have been simpler to make the ‘P’ of m design all one piece, which would also increase the strength of the part.

Page 36: As coursework dt

DevelopmentAfter manufacturing these two components, the smaller inner ring and the supporting strut, I will need to decide on how I am going to attach these to my design. I thought that I could either use an adhesive or I could use screws and possibly a Chicago bolt to attach the inner ring to the outer ring. After discussing these possible options with my design technology teacher I decided that using screws and a Chicago bolt would be far better. This is due to the fact that it will create a stronger join between the components and the aesthetical qualities of the screws and bolts will fit in much better with the technology theme of my brand.

For the supporting strut I will use screws to attach this component to the bottom of the outer ring. I will use a drill to create the suitable holes needed to enable a secure bind between the MDF component and the screw. This should provide a sufficient connection between both components.

The area circled is where I would use screws to attach the support strut to the large outer ring. I will inset the screws into the component through the bottom of the outer ring.

Here you can see the position that I have decided to use a Chicago bolt to attach both components together. The advantage of using a Chicago bolt is that it allows for a strong connection and fits in well with the theme of science and technology in my brand. It also improves the aesthetical effect of my design whilst providing a strong bond.

• My PoS will have to be very safe and cannot be of any hazard at all, to possible customers.

• When selecting the materials to use in the manufacture of my PoS, I want to use materials that will mean that the PoS is of a high aesthetic level, but at the same time do not cost too much money . This will mean that more PoS can be made for less money.

Specification Checkpoint 1

So far during this development I have managed to follow all my specification points except for one. I have kept true to using materials and lines that fit in well and portray the themes of my brand L’Oreal Men Expert.

The one point that I have not yet covered is the interactivity of my design. It is interactive to a certain extent due to it allowing the customer to pick up and interact with the product. However I want to extend my designs interactivity which I will look at doing during further development.

Here is an image of how my design looks so far:

Page 37: As coursework dt

DevelopmentAs the main part of my design is the large outer ring and the components situated inside it, it is crucial that I make sure that these components are strongly secured to the base piece of my design. I looked at using screws through the bottom of the outer ring, drilled into the MDF base but I decided that this would not provide enough support and stability. Previously I decided that I could use shaped pieces of wood either side of the large outer ring.

These two components are based on ‘Chocks’ used to make sure large aircraft and vehicles do not move when stationary. This means that the top edge will be curved allowing a secure fit with the curvature of the large outer ring. With one component either side of the large outer ring this should enable a snug connection and allow sufficient support of the main part of my design.

Here you can see Aircraft Chocks that I have based these two components on. They will provide a secure fit and decrease the chance of side to side rotation of the main large outer ring.

As these components will need to be securely attached I have decide to use screws to attach these components to the Large outer ring and the base of my design. Here you can see where screws could be placed on my design.

I have decided that I will use MDF to create these two components. The reason behind this is that I can easily cut the MDF to create the smooth curve so that the component fits onto the large outer ring nicely. Also, MDF is fairly cheap which will mean that due to these components being fairly small I can manufacture them quickly and easily, still with strong practical properties. As these components are not too important aesthetically I have decide to simply use a Gloss Orange spray paint to provide a finish to the bare and simple MDF. This will relate well with my brand and allow me to add a contrast of colours on my design.

The products that are positioned on my PoS will need to stand out so that they will attract the attention of the customers in that shop. After a bit of thinking I thought that I could use angled lighting to shine onto the products. Initially I thought of using small bulbs but then realised that this would not be practical. This is because They could easily smash and they would become very hot, leading to a health and safety hazard, as they would be positioned near where the customers hand would be if they were reaching to pick up he product. This meant that I would need to find another source of lighting.

After talking to my Design Technology teacher I found that I could use L.E.D lights. These would be perfect as they are low profile and do not become really hot after being on for a long time. They also use minimal electricity meaning that they wont cost lots to power. I will use Strip L.E.D’s as they can easily be attached to my design, without ruining the aesthetics. Here you can see an example of Strip L.E.D’s.

I now need to decide where I will position these Strip L.E.D’s. I will position them above both products so that they are illuminated by the light. Here you can see where these L.E.D’s would be positioned.

One reason for using Strip L.E.D’s is that I can easily attach them to the top of the inner ring and to the inside of the outer ring. This is because it is possible to purchase Strip L.E.D’s that have an adhesive backing so they can simply be stuck to the desired location. The arrows show the direction that the lights would be facing, pointing the light down onto the products on display.

Page 38: As coursework dt

DevelopmentEven though my design will be located in a large shop or store the issue of powering these L.E.D’s still exists. There are several ways of powering the L.E.D’s on my design and here I have looked at both possible options.

The first method I looked at was the use of an 9 Volt Battery stored in my design. There are several advantages and disadvantages of using this power source which I have looked at in this Development.

Advantages:• Small in Size• Easily stored in my design• Easy to get hold of the battery

Disadvantages:• Not a very long lifespan, so would have to be replaced often• A large number would need to be purchased , meaning that it would cost

either the brand or the store a considerable amount of money to maintain and keep the PoS powered while it is in the store.

The second power source that I found I could use is a 12 volt DC mains transformer connected to mains electricity.

Advantages:• Will never need to be replaced• Can easily be turned on and off at the mains

Disadvantages:• More expensive to buy• Harder to hide/store in my design.

After looking at both power sources I have decided to use the 12V Transformer connected to mains electricity. This is purely down to the practicality of the power source in a store environment. The benefits of the 12V is that it will not need to be replaced and can easily be turned on and off. The only issue is how I will position it in my design but I should be able to do this.

My problem is that the 12V Transformer is quite large in size and may be difficult to position on my design. Firstly I looked at possible placements for the Transformer. After a bit of thinking I decided that I should have the Transformer externally on my design as it will be on for long periods of time and may overheat if it was positioned internally on my design. Obviously I want the Transformer to be hidden from view as it will ruin the PoS’s aesthetics, so I have decided to mount it behind the PoS.

There is only one place that I can really position the performer without it being seen. I will have to mount the Transformer behind the Product description and Information component beneath the ‘P’ in ‘Expert’.

Here you can see where the Transformer would be mounted. This would allow for sufficient cooling and easy access if it does need to be replaced.

The advantages of the Transformer being positioned here is that it is close to both areas where L.E.D’s will be positioned. This means that excess cable will not be needed, and there is minimal cable to hide from view. Below you can see where the cable will be positioned on the rear of my design to power the L.E.D’s.

I will hide the cables for the L.E.D’s behind the layer of Acrylic and Aluminium on the front of the outer ring and ‘P’ for ‘Expert’. This means that they a hidden from view so will not disrupt the clean linear lines of my design.

Blue = L.E.D’sRed = Cables

Towards Mains Socket.

Page 39: As coursework dt

DevelopmentMy next step is to work out how I am going to mount the Transformer to the back of my design. I have spoken to my Design Technology teacher and he suggested that I shouldn’t physically attach the Transformer to my design. I agreed as it may need to be replaced at some stage and if it was attached this would take a significantly longer amount of time to remove.

I have decided that I should use some sort of shelf with sides. This means that the Transformer sits on the shelf but is not attached. This means that the Transformer can easily be removed, yet due to the sides on the shelf it is stable and cannot fall off the design. Also this will provide good ventilation for the Transformer as it is not mounted in an enclosed area on my design.

This shelf will provide a stable and secure mount for my Transformer. It will be attached to the rear of my product description component. As this component is out of sight and it only has a practical use I decided

that I will simply create this shelf out of MDF wood. I will cut out the main bottom piece and the three sides out of the MDF. I will then use an adhesive such as a wood glue to hold these components in place. I will then drill holes and then use screws to attach these pieces together.

The glue will hold the components in position which will allow me to drill holes and use screws to attach these components.

MDF components

After completing my Specification Checkpoint 1 I realised that my design is currently not very interactive when the customer is using the PoS. However, the problem that I have is I want my design to be simple yet effective, which relates very well with the ethos of L’Oreal Men Expert. This means that I do not want to perform any dramatic changes to my design as it may effect the simplicity of my design.

I decided that I should ask some advice from my design technology teacher. After a few ideas, I though about possibly incorporating an interactive feature that is related to the theme of Technology in L’Oreal Men Expert. I then decided that maybe using some sort of magnifying glass would be functional, yet at the same time an interesting aspect of my design. However, I am not sure where about to position this component on my design.

I would use a magnifying glass similar to the one pictured above.

The main function of my PoS is to display the products. This means that it would make sense to use the magnifying glass near or on the products being displayed. As there are two products displayed on my design then I have decided that the it would be best to use the magnifying glass on the product displayed inside the ‘P’ of ‘Expert’. This is because it is central on my design and If I were to use it on the product on the ‘E’ then it may ruin the shape of the ‘E’ making it less obvious that it is a ‘E’.

Here you can see where I would like to locate my Magnifying Glass on my design.

Another student in my class has pointed out that I need to make sure that I use the correct magnification on the lens, otherwise the image could be distorted and out of proportion.

Page 40: As coursework dt

DevelopmentAfter thinking about this Magnifying Glass component, I wasn’t sure on how much of the Magnifying Glass I should have on my design. This is because I do not want this certain component obscuring the view of my design and the products that are being displayed. The two options I have are shown.

Option 1

My first Option is to have the whole of the Magnifying Glass on my Design. This option would be harder to attach to my design, and may disrupt the clear outline of the letter ‘P’ in ‘Expert’.

Option 2 My second Option is to have just the Glass part, not the handle, on my design. This would allow the customer to get a magnified image of the Product without effecting the shape of the letter ‘P’.

After completing this development I have decided to just use the Glass part of the magnifying glass on my design. This is because it still provides an interactive feature to my design, but most importantly it doesn’t block or obscure the Letter ‘P’ of ‘Expert’ on my design.

After the previous few Developments I now know where and what parts I am going to use on my design. This then brings on the question of how large this glass lens that I have decided to use is going to be. Again I have two options that I have thought of using, both seen bellow. Option 1

My first option is to have the Glass Lens smaller than the diameter of the inner circle of the Letter ‘P’ on my Design. This would allow for the customer to view around the lens to look at the product in its full size. However as the same product is displayed on the left hand side of the PoS then this is not necessary and may just lead to an obscured view of the other product positioned inside the ‘P’ of ‘Expert’.

Option 2My other option is to have the Glass Lens exactly the same size as the inner diameter of the Letter ‘P’. This would mean that all of the product would be magnified.

This would also benefit my design as it would allow for a completely clear, non obscured view of the product that is displayed on my design. This would also need no mounts or other components to hold it in position as it can be directly mounted to the ‘P’.

I have decided to use Option 2 as it will allow for a clearer view of the product and will involve less components to mount to my design.

= Glass Lens

Page 41: As coursework dt

DevelopmentI have now worked out most things about the interactive feature that is the Magnified Glass Lens. The only thing left is to work out a practical, and simple way of attaching this component to my design. I Have a few options but I want to use something that will not effect the aesthetics of my design. I want to use a method that will look clean and wont damage the look of the Glass Lens.

I have decided after much thought that I could simply use a strong Adhesive such as Araldite to attach this Lens to the Acrylic inner circle. This would be perfect as it will provide a strong bond, yet at the same time not obstruct the aesthetics of the clear Lens.

Using an Adhesive like Araldite will mean that the clarity of the Glass Lens will not be effected.

I can simply apply the Araldite to the inside of the Acrylic inner circle. This means that I can just slowly slide the Glass Lens into position. I may have to use something to hold it in place while it dries but if measured correctly it should be a tight, accurate fit. I wont need too much adhesive so I will use a thin piece of scrap material to spread it onto the wall of the inner circle.

The Araldite will be applied to the inside of the inner circle so that the Lens can be easily slid into position.

Even though I have now included the Magnifying glass lens to my design to improve it’s interactivity, I still want it to be more interactive. When completing my Questionnaire I found that lots of people want to be able to sample the product. I have done this by allowing the left hand product on display to be removed easily so that the customer can test the product. However I could further increase the PoS’s interactivity by providing very small free sample pouches.

The advantage of having Free samples is that it allows the customer to try the product before they purchase. Also if they put the Free Sample in there bag and forget about it, they may find it one day and want to buy the product.

Here you can see Free Sample pouches similar to the ones I will use on my design.

After thinking where I could position these Free Samples I decided that I could put them between the large outer ring and the lettering of ‘ERT’. This is because it is a central position but will not damage the outline of ‘EXPERT’. Here you can see the position highlighted by the red circle.

The free sample rack on of my design may change during manufacture as it may turn out that there is not enough space to have the free samples positioned here.

Page 42: As coursework dt

DevelopmentAfter identifying where I will position my Free Samples I now need to work out a way of holding and storing these on my design. I want them to be easily accessible so I think that a simple design will suit my design a lot better. There are a few options of methods I could use but here are the two I thought would be the best.

Option 1My first Option is to use a Rack type storage device for holding my Free Samples. The Free Samples will slot into each gap in the rack. This is good as it is an ordered and neat way of holding the Free Samples. However the only problem with using this storage type is that it will take a fair amount of time to manufacture for something that isn’t that important for my design.

Option 2

My second Option is to use a very simple, tray like method. I would simply use a shallow tray in which the Free Samples could be situated. This is good as it allows for them to easily be picked up and they can be refilled really easily and quickly. In comparison to Option 1 this method will take a lot less time to manufacture which is important especially if my design was to be batch produced.

After completing this Development I have decided that I am going to use Option 2. This is because it is a simple yet effective storage technique. It will be quick and easy to manufacture which is crucial as it is not a very important part of my design.

As this component is not largely important on my design, I want to construct it as simply and as quickly as possible. As it is not a large component I do not have to worry to much about Aesthetics. After thinking about what sort of materials I could use to manufacture this component I decided that using a material such as Acrylic would be perfectly suited to manufacturing this component.

Using Acrylic would suit my design as it is easily cut into the correct shape. Also, I would use Gloss Black Acrylic which will provide a good aesthetical finish that will fit in well with my brand and the rest of my design. This means that it will also be quite discrete and wont ruin the clean and modern look of my design.

I will simply use four sheets of Acrylic to create the sides of the tray. I will use an Adhesive such as Epoxy Resin to attach all these components together. As the top layer of the base on my design is already made of Black Gloss Acrylic the I can just glue these four sides to the base of my design. This then creates a very simple yet effective tray for holding the Free Samples.

Here you can see what my design should look like with they tray in position.

Page 43: As coursework dt

DevelopmentAfter completing further development on other aspects of my design I can start to figure out some finer details of my design. So far I have chosen to Use a combination of Aluminium sheet and Gloss Black Acrylic plastic to make the facing of my outer ring on my design.

However I now need to work out how I am going to mount this outer facing to the main part of my outer circle, the large plastic tube. I have already decided to use Hex Nuts and Bolts as this fits in well with the theme and ‘Technological’ side of my brand. I decided that I will use a ‘L’ shaped mount that will have two holes drilled in either side. This mount will be at a right angle which will allow me to attach the two components together with a strong and secure bond.

Here you can see the bracket that I will use to attach these two components together. It allows for both components to be attached at an exact right angle.

I now know how I am going to attach these two components. However I still need to decide where I am going to attach these components. After a bit of thinking I decided that I should mount these brackets onto the back of the outer ring facing. This is so that the bracket is out of sight and that the clean linear lines of my design are kept intact.

This is how my design will look. You can see that the bracket will be mounted behind the components so that it is hidden from view.

After the previous development I now need to work out what position I am going to attach the Outer facing and the main acrylic tube. Depending on the outcome of this development I may need to adapt the way that the Main body of my design attaches to the base of my design.

I have two possible options to how I could do this. The first is to attach the main acrylic tube to the outside of the outer facing. However this would create a wall around the edge of the design meaning that some of the inner components would be covered slightly. Due to this I have decided to use the second option which is to attach the outer facing to the outside of the main body. This would create the opposite effect to the other option meaning that there is a slight wall on the outside of my design.

This consequently means that other components of my design now need to be adapted to incorporate this change of design.

Front of Tube is hollow.

Mounting Brackets.

Someone pointed out that this part of my design may not be necessary if I can get a tight enough fit for the outer ring to slide onto the top of the Acrylic tube.

Page 44: As coursework dt

DevelopmentAs stated in the previous development, as I have changed the design of my Outer ring on the main body of my design, a few of the components on my design will need to be changed and adapted to allow for these recent changes.

The first component that I will need to adapt is the MDF mount that will sit between the round main body, and the base on my design. This needs to be changed as I have now decided that I am going to mount the outer facing of the main body onto the outside of the acrylic tube. This means that the main acrylic tube will need to be raised to allow for the outer facing to fit between the acrylic tube and the base.

Originally I was planning on just using two MDF chocks, one either side of the main acrylic tube but as the main acrylic tube needs to be raised I will need to change the shape and dimensions of this mount. I have decided that instead of using two separate components to simply just make one large part out of MDF. This will save time and will make the bond between the two components strong and stable.

Here you can see the shape of my new mount that I will use on my design. This will be made solidly out of MDF as it can easily be cut out and shaped. However, it will be painted Gloss Black like the original chocks that I was previously going to use. The arrow shows the height increase that has been made to make room for the outer facing on the main acrylic circle. The mount will be shaped to the bottom of the Acrylic ring so that a correct and clean fit is achieved.

Acrylic tube.

Base of design.

Another component on my design that will now need to be changed is the position of the tray that will hold the free tester samples. This is because as the Outer facing is now mounted to the outside of the large acrylic tube, there is now not enough room to position the tray at the area that was previously decided.

However, due to this change of design, there isn’t many other areas that I can position this component without dramatically changing my design. This is obviously not an option at this stage which means that I will need to add this component to the outside of my design.

I have decided that the only place I could realistically put this component is to have it mounted to the left hand end of the base. This would not effect the rest of my design but at the same time it will allow the tray to be easily seen and accessed by the customer.

Here you can see the new location of the tray component. I will still use similar construction to what was previously stated but this will need some adaption. This should also make my design look less cluttered as this component was slightly cramped in its previous location. This should make my design look a lot neater.

My friend said that this modification will improve my design a lot as it will not appear as cluttered which is crucial for it to fit into with my brand and design theme.

Page 45: As coursework dt

Development As the design of the Free Sample tray has been changed and it has been positioned differently on my design, I need to adapt how it is manufactured slightly.

I still want to use similar materials and construction to what I had previously decided. This means that I still want to use Gloss Black Acrylic to form the sides and base of this tray. I still want this component to be of a simple construction as It is not a hugely important part of my design.

After taking this in to account I have decided to simply create an acrylic lidless tray using four sides and one base sheet. I will then consequently mount this component to the end of my base. This means that it can be assembled easily and without having to adapt my design at all to allow for its new design and position.

After a bit of thought, I have decided that the best method of attachment is to simply drill holes through the component and the MDF base and use screws to join both parts. This should create a strong and sturdy bond.

Here you can see what this component will look like once attached to the base of my design. It will be slightly higher than the base so that it can be clearly seen and accessed by the customer.

After talking to my Design Technology teacher we realised that just simply using a tray would not be a very practical way of holding the free samples in position.

This is because it would look messy as there would be no organisation or order in the way that the samples are stored. This would conflict with my brand as L’Oreal Men Expert concentrate on being a Sophisticated and Professional company and the lack of order would not fit in well with my brand. It would also ruin the clean and linear lines of my design.

Originally I decided that I could use some sort of rack to hold the samples in position. After thinking about possible ways of holding the samples in place I decided that I should take inspiration from my original idea.

However, I do not want to use a rack and I have already decided that I am going to use a tray style unit. I decided that I could use the rack design, but mount it horizontally across the top of my tray. This would allow for the samples to be held into position vertically. This would also allow them to look ordered and tidy.

Here you can see a birds eye view of the rack style component that I will attach to the top of my tray component. It will allow the samples to be held in position, consequently making it look more ordered so that it fits in better with my brand. This will also be made out of Gloss Black Acrylic, same as the rest of my tray component.

Page 46: As coursework dt

Development I have now decided the majority of this tray component that I will use to store the free sample testers.

Throughout the design of this component I have tried to keep things as simple as possible. There a re several reasons for this. The main reason is that I want this component to be as simple as possible so that it can be quickly manufactured as it is not a hugely important part of my design.

I have done this by constructing it of one material and using a simple method of attachment to attach the component to the base of my design. I know need to decide the final and most important part of manufacturing this component and that it is what I am going to use to attach all the separate pieces of Acrylic together.

I have decided to keep things simple and use an adhesive to attach all the acrylic parts together. I know that Dichloromethane will be perfect for the job.

The advantages of using Dichloromethane is that it is perfect for attaching acrylic to acrylic. It can be applied by using a fine paint brush so it can be accurately applied. The main advantage though is that it dries clear meaning that there will be no obvious sign of any excess adhesive.

Specification Checkpoint 2• My design must incorporate linear lines which allow a sleek and modernistic look.

• My PoS will have to be very safe and cannot be of any hazard at all, to possible customers.

• When selecting the materials to use in the manufacture of my PoS, I want to use materials that will mean that the PoS is of a high aesthetic level, but at the same time do not cost too much money . This will mean that more PoS can be made for less money.

As you can see even though I have continued to stick with the rest of my specification, the aspect of Interactivity is still lacking on my design. Even though it has been dramatically improved I still think more can be done. I have decided to concentrate these next ten bits of development on improving my design Interactivity.

Page 47: As coursework dt

Development As stated in my second specification checkpoint, even though I have greatly improved my designs interactivity I think that It can still be vastly improved. The benefit of increasing my designs Interactivity is that it will mean that the brand and product are more likely to stick in the mind of the customer if there was some sort of interaction involved when using the PoS.

I now just need to find an area of my design that I can develop and consequently make more interactive. After a bit of thinking I decided that it would be a good idea to concentrate on the part of my design that incorporates the magnifying glass lens. This the inside of the Letter ‘P’ on my design.

I though about possibly changing the way that the magnifying glass is used but then decided that this may be too complicated and have a negative effect on the feel of my design. I then thought about possibly changing the internal part of the Letter ‘P’. Originally it would just hold another bottle of the product, but this one would be magnified by the lens. However, as another product is displayed on the ‘E’ then this does not make much sense and would seem illogical.

I consequently decided that I should adapt the product displayed inside the letter ‘P’. This would create a point of interest on my design and would make a more interesting way for the customer to find out information about the product if they had to look through the magnifying glass lens.

The area on my design that I have decided to make more Interactive.

I have now decided on the area that I am going to develop to further increase my designs Interactivity. I chose this area as it is a central, and main focal point of my design.

I now need to think about what I could do to this area to improve its interactivity. In the previous development I thought about possibly adapting the design of the product displayed in the inside of my letter ‘P’. This would create an area of interest on my design.

I though about possibly creating something a bit different out of the product. After some thinking I decided to take some inspiration from the main themes of my brand, L’Oreal Men Expert. I decided to concentrate on the technology and science that is involved in L’Oreal Men Expert products. I though about possibly creating some way of portraying this science and technology through the placement of the product mounted inside the ‘P’ of my design.

I know just need to think about a few possible ways that I could do this. I think this would work as my brand believe strongly in the truth of their products and the way that they do actually work based on the science behind the products.

After completing this development I have decided that I can incorporate the science and technology behind my brand into the middle product and use it to display extra information about my product.

Page 48: As coursework dt

DevelopmentAfter deciding that I am going to use the inner product to portray the technology and science behind my brand and product, I now just need to decide on a suitable way to do this.

I have several options as to how I can portray this information. I am completing this development so that I can work out which method would be best to use and which one would create the best outcome for my design. Here are the two main ideas that I have had:

Option 1My first idea is to simply have a small amount of written information displayed onto my inner product. This would allow for greater understanding of my product and allow for greater detail in explanation to be used. The text would obviously be incredibly small so that once the customer looks through the magnified lens the text is the correct size.

Here you can see how the text would be presented. Obviously more text could be fitted onto the actual product on my design.

Option 2My second option is to portray this information through the use of diagrams and images. This will allow the customer to visibly see the effects of the product and this information will be a lot quicker to take in by the customer. Using this method it will also allow the customer to picture in their heads the result of using this product.

Day 1

Day 7

Day 13

Day 16

After completing this development I have decided that using visual methods to portray the Science and technology behind my design will suit my design much better. It allows the customer to visibly see the results and it also allows for greater understanding of the product.

Now I have decided on what sort of method I am going to use to portray this information, I now just need to decided on what I am actually going to display.

After speaking with my Design Technology teacher and looked further into the themes and aims of my brand, L’Oreal Men Expert, I have come up with a few options to what I could portray onto this product. After looking at all of the possible options I chose the one which I think will relate the best with my Brand.

I have decided that I am going to portray four separate images of a mans face, lined vertically down the product. Next to each photo will state the number of days that the individual has used the product. The images will show the gradual effects that using the product will have on the users skin.

The reason I have chosen to use this to portray the Technology and Science behind the products of my brand is that L’Oreal Men Expert strongly believe that their products do genuinely do what they say that they do and using this method it will allow me to show these effects through factual images.

Day 1

Day 7

Day 13

Day 16

Here you can see the Images and Days that show the effects that using the product has on the user.

Page 49: As coursework dt

Development

I have now decided to go for the visual images on my design to portray the information, to increase interactivity on my design.

I now need to work out a way of creating these images that I will use on the product. Obviously as these products are showing the results of using the product I need to adapt each photo to show a slight improvement each time.

I have decided that I am going to use a photo of a man that fits in well with the target audience of my product. I will now need to use a piece of software to edit each image to show clearer and smoother skin on the mans face.

I spoke to a friend who is currently doing A-Level Photography and he has said that he can aid me by showing me how to do this on Adobe Photoshop. This would mean that I can get high quality images and portray the product to its full potential.

I can use smudging tools and other tools to adjust skin colouring on the four images.

I have now worked out most of my inner product that will display the information that I have chosen. I now just need to decided on a way that I am going to incorporate this onto the product.

I want to use a method that will involve minimum time and will be simple to manufacture. One of my first ideas was to have a hollowed out circle in the middle of the product. I would then place the information in the cut out on my product. This would allow the customers to look into the product which relates well with regard to looking in more detail about what makes up the product and looking at the technology and science behind it.

However after thinking about using this Method I realised the this would take an incredible amount of work to create and assemble.

I consequently decided that it would benefit my design much more if I just kept this component as simple as possibly. After a bit of thought I have decided on simply using a computer to create the graphic for my design and I have spoken to a printing shop and they have told me I can print it to sticker paper so I can simply attach this to the product by sticking it on.

This will keep this part of my design nice and simple and easy to create.

Day 1

Day 7

Day 13

Day 16

This is what the Sticker will look like on my design. It will be fairly simple in appearance but that will; have a positive effect on the customer. It will be simply stuck to the product.

Page 50: As coursework dt

Development

After deciding that I am going to use a sticker to attach the graphic to the front of the product situated inside the letter ‘P’ on my design, I now need to work out how I am actually going to create this product as I am obviously not going to use a bottle of the actual product.

I still want to keep this part of my design as simple, yet as aesthetically pleasing as possible. I want to use a very basic component to display the graphic.

Because of this I have decided that I am going to use a simple, single piece of Gloss Black Acrylic that will be shaped to the accurate sizing of a bottle of the actual product. This will mean that the customer is not distracted by the product backing and can fully concentrate on the Graphic.

I will bend the bottom using a line bender so that the product can sit upright inside the ‘P’ of my design. This will also allow the product to be removed so that the graphic or whole component can be changed in the event that the PoS will be used for another L’Oreal Men Expert product.

Here you can see a front and side view of the Acrylic component that will have the Graphic attached to it. It will be a single piece of Gloss Black Acrylic sheet.

During development one of the ideas that I have tried to incorporate into my design is that I can design this PoS so that It can be adapted easily, so that it can be used for other L’Oreal Men Expert products.

This directly relates to this piece of development where I am going to decide on the method to use to attach this inner product onto my design.

Obviously if this PoS is going to be reused for other products, the acrylic component needs to be removable from my design. I have decided to use the same method of attachment as I have for the other product.

This is a simple yet effective method in which there will be a slight bath for the product to sit in. This will mean that the product will be stable but at the same time can be easily removed if the PoS needs to be changed to a new product which means that the interactive Graphic will need to change.

However, unlike the other product this product’s bath will need to be rectangular due to the shape of the acrylic component, where on the other product, situated on the left hand shelf, it is a bottle of the actual product so will have a rounded bath. This bath can be easily cut out during manufacture.

Here are a top and side view of the bath that will be created to position the Acrylic component.

Page 51: As coursework dt

DevelopmentUp to now there has not been a back to my design and it has been hollow. However, after thinking more about where my design is going to be located, I have realised that I will need to add a backboard to my design.

This is because my PoS will be placed I shops such as Boots and Superdrug where the finish of the walls and surfaces can sometimes be quite unattractive. I have decided that this could ruin the look of my design if there was a bleak wall showing through my design. Also, light from the L.E.D’s could be lost through the back of my design which would mean that less is being angled onto the product itself.

I have decided to keep things simple and just create a laminated image that can be easily attached to the back of my design. After a bit of thinking I have decided that I should include images that represent the product and the brand, L’Oreal Men Expert, onto the background image. I will also stick to the brand colours using only Black, Orange and Silver to create this Background. I can also include links to Social Networking pages by L’Oreal Men Expert.

Specification Checkpoint 3• My design must incorporate linear lines which allow a sleek and modernistic look. However, some smooth and

subtle curves could also be used, but the majority linear.

• When selecting the materials to use in the manufacture of my PoS, I want to use materials that will mean that the PoS is of a high aesthetic level, but at the same time do not cost too much money . This will mean that more PoS can be made for less money.

After completing Development I have managed to complete my specification and incorporate all of it into my design. I have made sure that my design fits in well with my brand and uses sharp linear lines with a combination of curves to endorse the aesthetics. I have also dramatically increased my designs interactivity without going over the top. The result is perfect for my brand as it is not too interactive but allows the customer insight into the Science and Technology behind the products.

Page 52: As coursework dt

Final Design

Social: One of the Social issues that I have highlighted with my design is that due to the product being aimed at ageing men, it may mean that it makes the customer become self conscious of their facial image. Also the use of models such as Hugh Lorre may put off customers as it portrays the brand to be directed at well off, middle/upper class men.Moral: My design is morally acceptable as it is true to the customer, as L’Oreal Men Expert believe strongly in the Technology and Science in their products. This reassures the customer as the brand are being honest and portraying the true results of using this certain product. My design can also be adapted so that it can be reused by the brand to display other products, this increases the longevity of my design.Environmental: As my design is made up mainly of three main materials, MDF, Gloss Black Acrylic and Aluminium sheet then if my design was being recycled it could be taken apart so that the materials can be recycled separately. However I have used adhesive in several parts of my design which would make this process take a significant amount of time. However I have designed my PoS so that it can be reused by my brand to show other products so it wont necessarily need to be recycled.

• I feel that a good combination of Modern lines and curves have been used in my design, especially in the main outline of my design.

• I have definitely stuck to these two themes throughout my design and feel that it fits in really well, especially with the use of the Aluminium sheet.

• Even though this is quite a simple specification to stick to I feel that I have been true to it throughout my whole design and manufacturing process.

• I would like to think that I have achieved this in my design, especially after I relocated the position of the tray that holds the free samples on my design.

• I feel that I have successfully completed this specification through he use of materials such as Aluminium yet at the same time kept cost low through using Acrylic sheet throughout my design.

• I have completed this specification due to the way that my Design can be easily placed onto a flat surface of any height and the use of the rubber feet to aid grip.

• I have stuck to this specification but due to manufacturing limitations I had to create a scale model of the full-size design.

• I have made sure throughout my design that I have filed and sanded all sharp edges to avoid the risk of injuring the customer and have used rubber feet for stability.

• I feel that I have completed this point as the customer can pick up and test the product and with the use of the magnified lens which adds to the interactivity.

• Similar to a previous specification I have completed this through using a range of materials that allow for the high level of finish yet at the same time keep the cost as low as possible.

• The Design does incorporate very modern and linear yet angular geometry which fits in very well with the overall appearance and the brand, L’Oreal Men Expert.

• This Design does stay very true to the themes and ethos of the brand and the design consequently portrays this at a very high attention to detail and finish.

• It is obvious that the designer has stuck to the main colours of the brand and has made these colours, especially the orange stand out very clearly, yet in proportion.

• The finished product has a perfect balance with regard to the use of space and the overall proportions of certain components and aspects of the design.

• Throughout the manufacture of this certain design it is clear that high attention to detail has been used with regard to the choice of materials, and selection of certain materials has created the perfect finish.

• The designs placement is very important but with regard to this specific design it is perfect as it can be position at a range of heights due to it’s stable, flat base.

• As stated in a previous specification the design definitely has practical and realistic proportions which suits the brand.

• The design looks like it would be very safe to have in a shop environment. It has a large stable base and the use of the rubber feet dramatically improve grip.

• This design allows for this specification perfectly due to the way the customer can remove the product and interact with it accordingly.

• The overall use of materials in this design allows for a high aesthetical level yet at the same time keeps the cost low which is perfect for if the design was to be made in large numbers.

• I found that the PoS looked very modern and in a shop such as boots it would definitely attract the attention of the customers.

• Similar to the last specification the design looked very professional and had a very smooth and sleek finish, and portrayed what the brand is about very well.

• The colours of the design were very striking and definitely stood out. But at the same time you could tell that it was L’Oreal Men Expert straight away.

• The PoS was very well laid out and you could clearly tell the function of each part very easily. The design wasn’t too cramped or cluttered which was good.

• The design looked professional due to its high level of finish, especially the shine from the gloss plastic. Yet at the same time the materials looked like they would not cost too much money to use in the design.

• The design was positioned at a very good level as it enabled the customer to use it easily. The only thing is that the glass lens may be a bit low for some people to use.

• The PoS did not seem overwhelming with regard to size, however it was big enough so that it could be used with ease.

• The Design was very safe and was nice and stable on the display surface. It had smooth edges so it was safe when the customer reached in to pick up the product.

• The PoS was interesting through the use of the magnified lens but was not too over the top with interactivity as that wouldn’t have fitted in very well with the brand.

• The design did not look cheap and tacky due to the use of the aluminium and high finish Acrylic. This is even though a large amount of the plastic was used in the manufacture process.

User Feedback Modification

It was pointed out that I will need to make sure that this piece of Aluminium is filed and sanded so that it does not create a sharp edge which could be a safety hazard on my design.

Original View View of Finished Product

I initially thought that the Aluminium could be a safety hazard due to it having a thin sharp edge. Despite this, after seeing the finished product I don't think that this is an issue anymore due to the fact that the aluminium has been sanded to a very high standard. Also, the way that the Aluminium is layered onto a piece of Acrylic do there is no thin edge at the side of the Aluminium anymore, meaning that there is no longer any safety risk.

Even though this technique is do-able a student in the year above who has used the same method before has pointed out that it is very difficult to produce a perfectly round shape.

I think that it was good that a piece of Acrylic tube that was the correct size was found as it produces a perfect circle and looks a lot more professional and clinical. It also meant that Ross didn’t have to worry about joining the bent Acrylic into one piece as this would have left an obvious join mark and would have been very time consuming. Another benefit of having thee completely round tube is that it allowed the outer ring component to be slid onto the tube without having to use an adhesive or other method of attachment.

The free sample rack on my design may change during manufacture as it may turn out that there is not enough space to have the free samples positioned here.

I am glad that the rack that held the free samples was moved on Ross’ design as it would have looked very cramped where it was originally going to be. It would have also been difficult for the customer to reach into to take a free sample as it was hindered by the lettering and the outer ring on the design. The new position means that the free samples can easily be taken and held well due to the new type of rack. It also looks good sitting at the end of the design and I like the way that it changes that shape of the base as it did look slightly boring just being a straight rectangle.

Modification for Mass Market

Problem for Mass Production Modification Needed Manufacture Process Type of Production

1. The First problem for Mass production on my Design is that I have used a large amount of adhesive to attach various components. When it comes to Mass Production a lot of time would be wasted gluing the components together and errors could easily be made. The components could be attached incorrectly, but due to it being glued this mistake could not be erased so the component would have to be discarded.

2. Another problem with my design is that the large ‘ERT’ component that attaches to the base of my POS is made solidly of layers of Acrylic. This adds a considerable amount of weight to the PoS, meaning that they would be heavier to transport or move around the shop. Also the large amount of Acrylic being used would be very costly if these PoS’s would be made in large numbers.

3. Another problem with my design is that it will take a considerable amount of space up to transport. This is primarily down to the fact that the large ‘ERT’ is permanently attached to the base. This means that the packaging will have to be substantially larger to allow for this component, without the risk of it being damaged in transit.

4. Another Issue with my design is that the rack that holds all the free samples is simply glued onto the end of the base. This does provide a strong join as both parts are fairly light weight. However having to glue this component onto the base will just lengthen the manufacturing process, where time is crucial. Also the join is noticeable which if eradicated would make the design look a lot neater and professional.

To solve this problem for Mass Market I would make my design so that all the components slot together. This would mean that I wont need to use Adhesive and the finished product will look a lot neater in appearance. The positive about this is that it would not take much adjustment for theses changes to be made.

To solve this issue I have decided that I should use a more simple method for creating the ‘ERT’. Instead I would use a few layers of Acrylic sheet separated by washers. This would then be all held together by aluminium rods going through the pieces or Acrylic. This would mean that less Acrylic would be used saving weight and reducing the cost.

The modification I would make to eradicate this problem is that I would design the ‘ERT’ so that it slots into the base of my design. Very similar to the main body of my design I would create two separate holes in the base so that the ‘ERT’ simply slots into place and can be easily assembled on arrival.

Only a slight change would be needed to make this modification. All that would need to be done is to allow the free sample rack to be incorporated into the base of my design, meaning that the front of the base and rack would be one whole piece. This would mean that these two components would be combined into one meaning it will be quicker to put together.

To manufacture my design with these changes that need to be made, I would simply just adjust the CAD element of these components so that the slot together. The benefit of this is that the majority of my design is made of Acrylic so I can adapt it using CAD and the CAD process is fairly quick and simple to use and it produces a high quality finish.

The manufacturing process would not have to adapted much to allow for this change. I would still create the Acrylic pieces by CAD, and then all that would need to happen is for the Aluminium rods to be cut to the correct size. The separate pieces would then be attached together with Dichloromethane and the rods used for rigidity.

To allow for this change in manufacture all I would have to do is adjust my CAD design to allow for the ‘ERT’ to slot into place. I would do this by creating two square shaped holes in the base of my design. I would then just extrude the ‘ERT’ CAD to produce two rectangular blocks that will insert into the holes.

I would simply adapt the CAD design to incorporate the rack into the base. I would make sure that I would add some small finger joints on the Acrylic sheets to allow a strong bond between the pieces, consequently creating a solid component. This would add no cost to the manufacture of my design but would result in creating a more clinical product.

These modifications now means that my design is a lot more suited to Mass Production. This is because the use of CAD means that these components can be made in large numbers and cut out using machines very quickly and efficiently with minimal man effort.

This process would also be ideal for if the PoS was to be mass produced as the majority of components would be made on CAD with just the Acrylic rods made separately. The process would not be hugely time consuming and would mean that the component has high aesthetical values after completion.

This change that would be made to my design means that it would be ideal for mass manufacture. The use of CAD design means that the changes are easily made and can be further changed in the future if needed. This also makes the design a lot easier to transport as it could then be separated into three parts.

This change is very simple yet significant. This means that my design would still be highly suited to mass production due to the simplicity of the CAD design. After a slight change the Acrylic sheet could then be cut over and over again, without effecting any other aspect of the design or components.
