SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2015 ELUL/TISHRI/CHESHVAN 5776 Issue No. 140 Palm Harbor, Florida

As we approach a New Year, I am aware

that I am the beneficiary of many blessings. I am

blessed with restored good health, a loving family,

a wonderful congregation, citizenship in this great

nation and a religious and cultural heritage that

ennobles humankind. Despite these blessings and

despite the joy I always feel as we approach a new

year, my heart heavy with concern for the

wellbeing of the Jewish people, and with concern

for the Jewish people’s continued positive

influence upon the world.

The concerns for our survival are the result

of increased anti-Semitism that we are seeing

around the world, the de-legitimization of Israel and

most significantly, the proposed arms deal with

Iran which will surely endanger Israel and America.

All of these things make me feel far less secure

than I have ever felt during my adult life. As a

result, I plan to devote even more energy than I

have in previous years to fighting to protect our

people, especially our brethren in Israel.

I also hope to be able to continue the fight

for social justice in this country. Fighting for social

justice has long been a hallmark of the American

Jewish community. I fear that the fight for Jewish

survival during these troubled times may

overshadow this other very important commitment.

We cannot allow that to happen.

I pray that God will strengthen me and all of

you, so that we can join together as a congregation

in pursuing both of these important tasks with

greater intensity than ever before. Perhaps if we do

this, then next year, as we celebrate Rosh

Hashanah we will be able to feel even greater joy.

As I See It

The largest Jewish gathering in North America brings together 5,000 attendees for worship,

learning, singing, and community-building that shape the future of the Reform Movement.

Learning sessions, networking opportunities, and plenaries, bookended by morning worship and evening

entertainment…all tailored to inspire and empower congregational leadership (lay, professional, clergy, and up-

and coming leaders)

A Note from Cantor

Dear Friends, I hope you all had an enjoyable summer. My family has had a successful move to NYC, and everyone is doing well. In between unpacking and getting settled this summer, I was facetiming and Skyping with our B’nei Mitzvah children and with committee members for upcoming events, and preparing for various holidays, programs, and concerts. And of course, continuously speaking with Rabbi and our office staff. This month of Elul in our Hebrew Calendar, is a 29 day period of intense spiritual preparation for the coming year and the upcoming High Holy Days. In Aramaic (the language spoken by Jews living at the time), the word “Elul” means “Search”. Elul is a time to soul-search. It is a time and an opportunity to go within and contemplate how we each can “do better” with ourselves, with others, and with our world. Starting Friday evening August 21

st, I will sing

words of Psalm 27, which is another tradition during Elul. This Psalm begins with the words “God is my light and helper, whom shall I fear?” When we feel that God is with us and helping to guide us, the challenging spiritual work of Elul is easier. We are not alone. It is a gift to contemplate how to be a better human being. The rewards benefit you and every single person you come in contact with on a daily basis. I shared with you the words of author Elizabeth Gilbert before, and I do so again now…”It is never selfish to go on a spiritual journey or to take any sort of creative or healing or investigative voyage into the self. Going on a journey toward the self is actually a public service. All of us win when a loved one gets helped or healed.” She also just recently posted a quote from the TALMUD on Facebook that reads: “A person will be called to account on judgement day for every permissible thing s/he might have enjoyed but did not.”

I love this quote, this sacred reminder that it is not a sin to enjoy life. God gave us the gift of body and spirit and the ability to enjoy ourselves in this beautiful world. We are not perfect, and our world is not perfect, but there is so much GOOD in each of us and the world. As Elizabeth Gilbert writes, “Let’s continuously be grateful and enjoy simple pleasures, healthy pleasures, sincere pleasure and holy pleasures.” Amen to that! All of our services leading up to the High Holy Days, including our special Selichot (prayers for forgiveness) service on Saturday evening, September 5

th are times we will join together as a

community for spiritual preparation. As I constantly remind my teenage daughters and anyone being too hard on themselves, “we are all a work in progress”. This significant time of Elul and our High Holy Days is a call to repent and forgive each other and ourselves for transgressions, and encourage each other to find our way to the light. I am so happy and fulfilled to be back at my second home in Florida with all of you, as we pray, sing, hug, comfort each other, and revel in gratitude. My husband Jordan and our daughters Maya and Shira join me in wishing you and your loved ones a sweet and healthy New Year. Shanah Tovah Um’tukah. With love and song,

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

“Just as my ancestors planted for me, so I plant for my children.”

—Ta’ anit 23a L’Shalom, Welcome back! Temple Ahavat Shalom provides an enriching and creative setting for Jewish learning and living through innovative programming. Our Judaic curricula enables our students to create a spiritual connection to their Jewish traditions, values, and history by enhancing their Jewish identity. Our core values of Jewish education in the religious school at Temple Ahavat Shalom are “Shalom- Peace, Kavod- Respect, Tzedekah- Righteousness, B’tzelem Elohim- in the Image of God, and Klal Yisrael- Jewish Community.” Teaching these essential Jewish values enriches the lives of our students and families through family and holiday programs, social action, mitzvah and tzedekah projects, Shabbat services, and youth choir. It was good to see all of our families returning and to welcome many new ones. Our second Annual “Welcome Back BBQ Lunch and Tefillah Service” sponsored by our wonderful Temple Brotherhood and Sisterhood was a great success, and we look forward to continuing in this tradition of “fun, food and friendship” annually. 8

Thank you to everyone who signed up for our “Shofar Orchestra!” This unique orchestra will demonstrate the sounds of the shofar at our Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. The congregation always looks forward to hearing and seeing the children perform so beautifully, and we are so very proud of them. There will be a Parent Confirmation Orientation on Tuesday, October 27 at 7:00pm in the Temple Library. This orientation will familiarize you with all the important details pertaining to your child’s confirmation year. We will be discussing important information including the student’s curriculum for the year, the annual retreat led by Rabbi Klein, and of course the Confirmation ceremony. We will be assigning committees responsbilities for the various aspects of the Confirmation process. Your child’s Confirmation is a special milestone for the entire family to share in and we look forward to seeing you at this informative meeting. Our Temple Ahavat Shalom Religious School has always been committed to meeting your children’s Jewish educational needs. Your children are very important to us. The goal of our devoted teaching staff and Madrichim is to instill within our children a love and appreciation for “Talmud Torah”—the Study of Torah. Rabbi Klein and Cantor Jacobson share in this vision, and we thank them for their leadership and continuous support for our religious school. Let’s continue to work together to accomplish these goals. We would like to wish our parents “Shana Tova Umetukah”, and a “Good and Sweet New Year”. May all our students be blessed with a Sweet New Year filled with the joy of Jewish learning. Todah Raba, Gayle Maller Religious School Principal

HEBREW SCHOOL

This will be another exciting new school year. There have been some changes. Classes will still begin at 9:30 and conclude at 12:30. Hebrew grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 will all be taught from 9:30 until 10:50.

Grade 7 will be taught from 11:10 until 12:30. Grade 3 will be taught by Anne-Marie Cumming. Grade 4 by Jerri Greene. Grade 5 now by Norman Smith. Grade 6 now one class by Barbara Smith. Grade 7 is in the second session so that it may be taught by Barbara Smith.

Elaine Wolstein will use her special talents to help our students improve singing their prayers. Student progress reports will still be sent to parents periodically throughout the school year. Other enhancements will continue. The library computer lab will remain available for student use. Home study assignments will continue to reinforce class studies using approved Hebrew on-line websites. Computerized attendance record keeping will provide ready access to individual student attendance. Limited conversational Hebrew will continue to be introduced.

We look forward to preparing with our children to help make our High Holy Day Youth Services very special. Barbara Smith, Gayle Maller, Anne-Marie Cumming, Eve Goldstein and Harriet Zazzaro will again join together to make this special time a success.

The past school year has gone, and surely this coming one will go, smoothly and successfully thanks to the tireless and always positive efforts of Gayle Maller; the strong support of Rabbi; our dedicated teachers; enthusiastic madrachim; and our committed parents. We especially thank Rabbi and Cantor for their continued support, guidance and assistance in preparing our children’s religious education.

Shalom From Your Early Childhood Friends,

As we start off our new school year, our children

are learning about their school and temple,

along with the comfort and sense of community

that we cultivate within our preschool walls. A

bystander could easily guess that our little

learners are happy and eager to come to school

by their wide smiles and their running feet as

they enter our doors ready for another day of

play-based educational fun.

Shalom Bayit—peace in our preschool house

(not the quiet peace, but rather the” happy”

peace).

Together we enjoyed welcoming our families

(mishpahah) and honoring our grandparents

(ki-bud ze-kei-nim) at our Rosh Hashanah and

Shabbat celebration as we sang songs and

dipped our apples into honey for a sweet New

Year. Our grandparents are wonderful

educators in teaching about family and holiday

traditions. It is our responsibility as parents to

carry forth traditions.

Sukkot—the harvest time of year. “To the

Sukkah we will bring apples and oranges on a

string.” Each class of students built their own

Sukkah to enjoy snack and lunch together.

What imagination and creativity. What an

awesome way to bond and forge friendships

within each class community. Gathering

together outside with family and friends for a

Sukkot picnic featuring fresh veggies and fruit

was so much fun. Even Sammy Spider enjoyed

the festivities.

We extend an invitation to anyone who would

enjoy reading to our students on Fridays during

our library program. Or perhaps you might have

a musical, dance or artistic talent and would

enjoy sharing your time volunteering for an hour

from time to time. We encourage you to

volunteer and put a smile on someone’s face…

it’s a mitzvah.

From our preschool families to our

congregational families we wish you a healthy

and happy New Year.

L’Shalom,

Karen

Brotherhood News

Welcome back! We hope everyone had a great summer. Mark Sorokurs and Warren Goldstein will be co-Presidents this year, and the Brotherhood Board has expanded with the greatly appreciated help of many of our younger members. Membership donations are now being accepted and we are looking forward to another excellent year. Everyone should be receiving a membership letter soon, and we'll be making the donation process even easier by having an online donation option available on the Brotherhood website. The more participation we get from Temple members, the more spectacular this year's activities will be! The High Holy Days are right around the corner and we have already begun working on our major fundraiser, Rosh Hashanah-Grams. Order forms will be mailed out the second week in August. If you'd like to save time and postage, you will be able to place your order online at the Brotherhood website. Albert Ouziel has designed a beautiful Rosh Hashanah-Gram which should enhance everyone’s holiday celebration. Please consider participating this year and showing your support of the Temple and the Brotherhood. As always, Brotherhood will be ushering during High Holy Day services to enhance the religious and social experience of both the adult and youth services. If you are interested in participating, please contact Hal Rosenberg who has graciously volunteered to supervise the ushers. To celebrate the beginning of Hebrew school and show our appreciation for the fantastic job always provided by our great school administration and faculty, Brotherhood is looking forward to once again sponsoring a "welcome back" lunch for all students, parents and educators. This is a great time for everyone to meet and to begin making those long-term friendships we all have experienced through participation in Hebrew school activities in addition to renewing and maintaining previous relationships made in past years.

We also would like to invite all Brotherhood members to participate in the FEAST project,

Quilts of Valor

Quilts of Valor is a national grassroots community service effort connecting the home front with wounded combat warriors and our veterans. Marcia Satinoff has presented eight quilts of valor as a thank you to our veterans at Temple Ahavat Shalom.

Social Action Committee

The Social Action Committee of Temple Ahavat Shalom seeks to foster an ongoing commitment

to the ideals and practice of Tikkun Olam as exemplified by Rabbi Chanina Ben Dasa when

he said: “When deeds exceed learning, learning endures; but when learning exceeds deeds,

it does not endure.” We will try to accomplish this by inspiring and

encouraging the integration of social action into the lives of the Temple community and by

engaging in specific actions designed to assist and improve

the lives of others.

It’s all about connections!

Social justice is one of the tenets of Reform Judaism. On URJ’s website (www.reformjudaism.org) there is further explanation: “To be a Reform Jew is to hear the voice of the prophets in our head; to be engaged in the ongoing work of tikkun olam; to strive to improve the world in which we live; to be God’s partners in standing up for the voiceless and fixing what is broken in our society.” Members of the TAS congregation so very often epitomize the work of tikkun olam. We have a myriad of opportunities to “mend the world”. Many endeavors sponsored by our Brotherhood and Sisterhood are designed to help our Temple, our congregants and community members. In addition, the Social Action Committee provides many activities that support our call to help. With this in mind, we are presenting a workshop on Thursday, December 3

rd that will

provide us with some of the tools we can use to support our own particular causes. Ed Marks and Steve Noel will be the co-chairs of this program. More information will be available in the next Ner Tamid.

Continuing SAC Programs

Leading Shabbat morning services at Inn on the Pond. As this venue is well north of Menorah Manor, we expect to have many more volunteers. Services begin at 9:30 and we will lead on the fourth Saturday of every month. Contact Ellen Woll (see below) if you can participate on October 24

th, November

28th or December 26

th.

Our Rides Program continues to operate. If you or someone you know needs a ride to Friday night or High Holiday services, please contact the Temple Office or Jerry Karp. Try to give us plenty of notice, so that we will have a good chance of success.

Holiday Dinners for The Haven of RCS and RCS Grace House: Thursday, December 17

th. We cook and serve a

holiday meal to residents and provide gifts for all the children.

Dinner for residents of Pinellas Hope: Monday, February 1

st. In conjunction with

Emmanuel Community Church we prepare (in the TAS kitchen) and our Confirmation Class serves dinner for residents of the Pinellas “tent” city.

A great habit to form—recycle newspapers, magazines, paper and junk mail (not phonebooks). By depositing them in the bin on the west side of the parking lot, you’re helping the environment and the Temple!

Collections for food banks: GCJFCS and RCS Food Banks

Collections for community agencies: The Haven and Grace House of RCS, GCJFCS, Pinellas Hope

Volunteering to provide help and caring when especially needed. We look forward to a year of working as a community to “fix what is broken on our society”.

Wishing you a healthy and happy 5776,
