AS-interface
Recognising and setting trends – by the leader in innovation and technology
for valve terminals
2
Successful automation todayconsists of three subject areas:pneumatics, electrical engi-neering and networking. Onlythose who master these areasand can provide them from asingle source to achieve thesynergies which go beyondtoday’s standards, and settrends demanded by the toughindustrial competition. As aleader in innovation and
technology in the area of valveterminals, Festo meets this cri-terion, even with regard tointelligent installation systemswith an AS-interface. Find outfor yourself on the followingpages!

6
Basic principles and features
of the bus system
AS-interface is a non-propri-etary, open installation systemwith a large and growing shareof the market at the lowestlevel of the decentralised pro-duction and process automa-tion hierarchy.
The non-proprietary and opencharacteristics of the systemare guaranteed by theEuropean standard EN 50295and the international standardIEC 62026-2. Certified productsbear the logo of the AS-International Association. TheAS-International Associationand its affiliated organisationsrepresent the interests of allmanufacturers with an interestin the AS-interface.
Simple communication
The AS-interface system per-mits the transfer of power anddata using a single cable. Theadvanced technology used toconnect stations to the yellowcable and the low connectioncosts mean that even stationswith a small number of inputsand outputs can be networked.
Built-in savings potential
Depending on the system type, reductions in installation costscan range from 26 to 40%. Thissolution is an ideal low-costoption for connecting individ-ual or small groups of actua-tors, valves and sensors to amaster controller. New devel-opments such as the parame-terisable profile 7.4 and theAS-interface Safety at Workconcept as per SpecificationV2.1, published at the start of 2000, opened the door tonew areas of application andfacilitated considerably moreefficient installation and net-working concepts.
Specification V3.0 published in2005 represents another giantleap forward, facilitating con-venient activation of analogueI/O, complex slaves or serialtext and data transfer, forexample.
AS-interface components
7
Benefits of AS-interface
Specification V3.0
• Slaves as per SpecificationsV2.0 and V2.1 will also rununder V3.0 – the system isfully backward compatible.
• Providing all the benefits of the easiest installation system since Spec. V2.0
• Up to 400% more I/Os permaster
• Improved peripheral errordiagnostics
• More functions within Spec.V2.1 and V3.0, e.g. easy inte-gration of complex 16-bitslaves, fast analogue mod-ules, DTM integration, asyn-chronous serial protocol,safety slaves
• Slave profiles for specificfunctions as well as inter-changeability. Mix of differentvendors and products, e.g.for parameters or communi-cation services.
AS-interface with A/B opera-
tion gives you 100% more
In A/B operation, each slaveaddress is used twice. An out-put bit is used for A/B addressdifferentiation (see table forcase distinctions).
The cycle time for pneumaticchains is generally more thanadequate.

Basic features
Simple connection technology
• One cable for power and data• Cable profile prevents polari-
ty reversal• Error control means there is
no need for screening• Plugs with insulation dis-
placement connection tech-nology guarantee Festo plug and work®
• Alternative bus connectiontechnology M12, 4-pin (standardised)
Ideal for pneumatic applica-
tions
Local control of small groups of actuators or individual, decentralised actuators cover-ing an extensive area means• short tubing lengths• high cycle rates• low air consumptionInstallation and communicationare carried out via AS-interfacecomponents.
A powerful system component
AS-interface is clearly subordi-nate to the fieldbuses alreadyin use. As such, it is not a com-peting product, but a technical-ly necessary and economicallyadvisable expansion.

Safety-oriented componentscan be easily incorporated intoan AS-interface network withthe AS-interface Safety at Worksystem. Safety componentsand standard componentsfunction on a single cable atthe same time. The AS-inter-face master views the safetyslaves just like all other slavesand incorporates them into thenetwork. The transmission pro-tocol and the cables in the AS-interface system are laid out so that they are also capable of transmitting safety-orientedtelegrams. The required safetyis ensured via additional signaltransmission between the safety slaves and the safetymonitor.
Expansion at any time
The safety components can beused at any time to expand anyexisting system that uses theAS-interface. A safety monitor
and safety slaves are added tothe existing AS-interface com-ponents and operated in thesame AS-interface network. The master views the safetyslaves just like all other slavesand incorporates them into thenetwork.
The AS-interface system cableis also suitable for transmittingsafety protocols. The safetyfunction is ensured via addi-tional signal transmissionbetween the safety slaves andthe safety monitor. This signalis transmitted with a specialsafety protocol. In case ofemergency, the correspondingsystem components areswitched off within a definedtime using the safety monitoror the safety outputs.
Software tool ASImon
The software tool ASImon isused to configure one and two-channel safety monitors withstandard PCs using windows. The safety monitor and theconfiguration software commu-nicate via a serial RS232 inter-face. Configuration data can besaved as files on a data storagemedium. The safety system canbe configured quickly usingdrag and drop.
What does ASImon do?
• Assignment of the slaves to the output switching elements
• Parameterisable operatingmodes
• Password-protected down-load of generated files
• Tamper protection for configuration data
• Configuration protocol• Monitoring of system
status in case of errors

The soft-start/quick exhaust
valve MS6-SV-ASIS ensures
maximum safety for man and
machine
If there is a sudden emergencystop in a safety-critical systemarea, the valve exhausts quick-ly and reliably. At the sametime, it also creates the highestpossible machine availabilityusing safe and reliable processes.
Maximum safety ...
… using soft start and quickexhaust for extra-fast pressurereduction. The facts: exhaustflow rate of 6000 l/min (fromP2 to P3), 1.5 times moreexhaust performance as well as continuous monitoring ofthe quick exhaust function atany time.
All in one …
… because traditional switch on and pressure build-up func-tions have been functionallyintegrated in the exhaust valve. And its compact dimensionsgive the MS6-SV great flexibili-ty for installation – whether as a part of the MS module or stand-alone.
Tested safety ...
…with German TechnicalControl Board (TÜV) certifica-tion to DIN EN ISO 13849-1,Category 4 Performance Levele. Documented so you can besure that the machine operatoris protected at all times.
