The 2014 FIFA World Cup finally came to the end in July. Aside from having received worldwide media attention and generating enormous business opportu-nities, this year’s World Cup was also the most secure in its history with US$14 billion in investments on security devices, equipment, and personnel. Many new and unique security devices were adopted here to well-protect both Brazil and the World Cup, ranging from surveillance cameras, screening devices like x-ray inspection systems, mobile scanners, as well as screening kiosks, facial recognition glasses, military-grade drones and robots, and some anti-hacking mechanisms. With all these high-tech devices, the 2014 FIFA World Cup really pushed security to the next level, as well as helped to realize the future of “smart” and “safe” cities.

Recently, the growing connectivity is causing the Internet of Things (IoT) to take shape. Due to IoT, city governments are able to leverage together different security and non-traditional security systems, such as weather forecasting and social media, for safe city projects. We are still right now, in the very early stages of applying IoT in safe city projects, facing challenges of segmentation of information in different government bureaus, but finally starting to pave the way of future safe cities.

Whenever a major sports event or security threat arises, it always affects the security industry. The latest booming UK market is an obvious example. The 2005 London Underground bombings were the biggest terrorist attack in UK history and was followed by the 2011 London Riots, also known as the “blackberry riots.” Also benefiting from recent economic growth, the UK security market is hot and crowded. Companies in Europe have worked hard to differentiate their solutions and services.

Bosch Security Systems has delivered and installed a video surveillance solution in the MesseTurm, one of Frankfurt’s high-rise buildings. Besides numerous offices, MesseTurm features a conference area and also houses several foreign consulates, resulting in very specific security requirements. The video solution, which was designed to protect tenants, visitors, and suppliers alike, was implemented during normal operation without having to shut down any part of the building.

Design and implementation of the video system imposed some challenges on the planners, as the cameras should not impair the ambience of the building and had to be installed during normal operation. In the parts of the building to be monitored, Bosch installed 40 cameras, whose images are stored on a storage system featuring a capacity of 6.5 terabytes. In case of need, this allows the operator to view images that have been recorded several days ago.

Intelligent video analysis and the forensic search feature of Bosch’s video management system accelerates searches by using small sets of meta data instead of the much larger images themselves. The video solution is operated via three comfortable operator workstations, giving the security personnel a clear view of all protected areas around the clock and alerting them of any unusual events.

Katherine Analia Franco is a luxury residential building located in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The building has 37 floors which cover 1,995 square meters. The real-estate developers of the building decided to use a wireless home automation system with biometric access, lighting, blinds, air conditioning, and entertainment control.

The access control device is installed at the main door. When residents arrive home and complete the biometric verification, the blinds open automatically and air conditioning, lights, and TV automatically turn on based on default settings.

Águas do Mondego, the concessionary company operating the multi-municipal water supply and sanitation system in the Baixo Mondego-Bairrada region of Portugal, installed 55 Avigilon HD cameras to monitor 27 different facilities across 13 municipalities. Security officials at Águas do Mondego manage the high-definition system from their desktops inside the company’s main control room using the Avigilon network video management software. The security team also uses the mobile application to view live and recorded images wirelessly, as well as Avigilon network video recorders to store up to 30 days of continuous surveillance footage. Avigilon HD solution has enabled Águas do Mondego to effectively manage multiple facilities, ensuring operational efficiency and water supply quality.

While the acquisition itself may not have come as such a surprise, the fact that Canon Europe, a small fish in the video surveillance game, was the acquirer proved to be much more of a shocker. In a recent report by IHS Research, Milestone Systems was named the number one VMS company globally

in terms of market share in 2013, with a year-over-year revenue growth of 32 percent. Despite being at the top, Milestone still has a market share of less than 10 percent, making the fragmentation of the VMS market quite apparent.

When the announcement came in June that the global leader in VMS was acquired by Canon Europe, many were stunned. The fact that Milestone was acquired wasn’t the surprise; it was the acquirer, a relative nobody in the IP video surveillance industry that was the shocker. However, beyond the shock and surprise, the acquisition of a software company by a hardware company, regardless of brand, makes complete sense in an increasingly competitive industry.

Hardware and software: tHe perfect MatcH

The convergence of IP video with the larger information technology (IT) world is no surprise. “IP video will converge with IT,” asserted Stephan Rasp, CEO of SeeTec. “Traditional security systems are just the first step. Buzzwords like ‘Internet 4.0’ and ‘Internet of Things’ attempt to capture

the dynamics of processing a diverse set of sensors and actors on the same IT infrastructure as management systems.”

To that effect, the fact that software on its own is a non-starter should make the acquisition of a software company by a hardware company unsurprising. In the case of Canon Europe and Milestone, it was simply the names that made this otherwise natural marriage surprising. “What Canon’s acquisition of Milestone

tells is basically emphasizing the importance of the synergy brought by the integration of software and hardware,” said Steve Ma, EVP of VIVOTEK. “The integration of hardware and software platforms not only can generate a powerful synergy for customers, but also can be critical to keep products and services at the forefront of innovation, with the latest cutting-edge applications to meet a variety of customers’ needs. Therefore, since the company’s establishment, VIVOTEK has collaborated closely with international and regional VMS programmers to seamlessly integrate camera functionalities onto different platforms.”

According to James Wang, Product Director at Dahua Technology, “the integration of hardware and software will become more common due to the development of new technology, such as cloud, big data, going mobile, etc., which speeds up the consolidation in IP video surveillance.” In particular for VMS vendors,

Consolidation Inevitable for Fragmented Markets?

The latest analysis of the video surveillance market from IHS Research estimates that the world market for video surveillance equipment will grow from US$13.5 billion in 2013 to $24 billion in 2018. Despite this growth, Niall Jenkins, Research Manager for Video Surveillance and Security Services at IHS Research, noted that the network video surveil-lance market has become increasingly more fragmented since 2003. “For example, in 2008 the top 10 suppliers of network cameras globally accounted for over 80 percent of market revenues. In 2013, the top 10 had an estimated 65 percent share,” said Jenkins. According to him, market consolidation is considered inevitable for fragmented markets.

However, Jenkins gave three reasons for why consoli-dation in the video surveillance industry may be slower than expected.1. Highly fragmented market: The competitive market is

so fragmented that one company would need to acquire multiple vendors to make a real dent in its shares.

2. Wide reaching channels: The channel consists of thousands of distributors and systems integrators that specialize in a core set of vendors and products, helping to maintain their margins and provide differentiation from competitors.

3. High growth rate: Double-digit growth rates and limited pricing pressure have made the video surveillance market attractive to both current players and new entrants.

The use of video cameras and video content analytics (VCA) for city surveillance is no longer a novelty. As safe/smart city projects become more prevalent, the traditional use

of video surveillance and VCA is changing. Previously restricted to security or safety alone, the future of VCA in a safe/smart city lies in connectivity with other systems, enabling a more dynamic and comprehensive, real-time situation picture, thus allowing operators to better handle events and take full advantage of video footage.

Zvika Ashani, CTO of Agent Vi, elaborated on the use of VCA in a city environment. He pointed out that fundamentally, video analytics are used for three main objectives: security, safety, and city management. Security analytics are based on a predefined

organizational security policy and include capabilities such as detecting vehicles parked in no parking zones, intrusion

detection, unattended baggage detection, and loitering. Safety analytics can identify crowd gatherings,

blocked emergency exits, or a vehicle stuck on a railway. Management analytics uses the data

from video cameras to collect statistics used for city planning, such as traffic flow, vehicle

counts, speeds, etc.

This is not science fiction: it is part of the capabilities recently demonstrated in Singapore as part of its safe city pilot project. Once an emerging technology, video content analytics (VCA) is becoming more mainstream.

Leman, Head of the Situational Awareness Analytics Program in Singapore’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) — a member of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) — shared some of the key contributions of VCA in smart city security. For example, I2R has developed a system that detects aggressive human actions. The system automatically extracts motion related features and feeds them to an artificial intelligence engine. The engine has been trained with video samples involving aggressive human actions to detect an occurrence of such an incident in real time. In applications, the system can be configured to detect gang fights, rioting, rampaging, etc. Another possible use is to protect security guards from being ambushed. In the safety and city management domains, I2R developed crowd analytics that could work robustly under very crowded conditions. The system can extract from real-time information such as crowd size, walking directions and speeds, and the number of visitors over time. It could also mine these metadata to unveil insights such as popular paths, point-of-interests in retail or exhibition spaces, crowd behaviors, and other statistics.

Key technologies to this are accurate human detections and tracking even when crowd density is very high. This overcomes the pitfall of most video

analytics systems where performance drops drastically in crowded conditions. Applications of this technology include crowd sensing and activity profiling at public places such as train stations and shopping malls, allowing, for example, estimations for waiting time in queues for taxis, banking services, etc.

It’S all aBout ConneCtIVIty

One of the principles behind safe/smart cities is creating an interconnected environment. In this setting, different systems are combined to ensure the city’s safety and efficiency. The future of VCA in safe cities is in connectivity with other systems and combining information from different sources to create a more detailed situational awareness picture. “Security applications are still very much in focus. We are seeing several new VCA applications areas in city safety, efficient use of energy and other public resources, street parking management, and many others,” said Dr. Sadiye Guler, founder and President of Intuvision. “For example smart street lights that are automatically brightened when there are only few people on a street to increase safety of the citizens also helps save electricity. The emphasis is on smart city solutions that combine VCA with other sensors and systems to develop city wide combined

solutions.”In addition, “Safe cities are more

concerned with making traffic and people flow more efficiently together with improving safety,” said Bill Flind, CEO of Ipsotek. Therefore, he added, “VCA shouldn’t be visualized as working alone but as part of the wider situational awareness system providing managers with suggested responses and action plans”.

One example is the image recognition and incident detection system, developed by Ipsotek, for Transport for London (TfL), the department in charge of keeping London’s transportation systems flowing. When a road in central London was blocked by a vehicle that had lost control across the carriageway, the system identified within 30 seconds that this was an incident requiring rapid intervention. Predefined contin-gency plans alerted the relevant TfL staff allowing them to take immediate remedial action including re-sequencing of traffic lights to divert traffic away from the incident spot. The ability to control rapidly developing build-ups of traffic around accidents, keeping traffic flowing through the use of an “always-on” system significantly reduced journey times in London.

According to Jamie Wilson, Security Marketing Manager for EMEA at NICE Systems, the power of VCA is not just in post-event investigation and scenario reconstruction, but “also in the ability to know sooner that an incident could potentially take place, or is starting, improving both the speed and quality of response.”

The euro area is turning the corner from recession to recovery. The U.K. is one of the very first European countries to get back on their feet from

the economic downturn. What really impressed the world is how just a year after the London riot in 2011, London still successfully organized the Olympic Games and also gradually paced up its economic recovery afterwards. Overall private spending has increased and the projects, which were put on hold, now have started again. Security projects ranging from construction, education, healthcare, retail, and commercial in general have more obvious growth. While growth in large government projects in critical infrastructure still remains slow, the UK security market has benefited from the wave of restoration and heated up with versatile security solutions and services.

eConoMiC StaBility BringS ConfidenCe to tHe Market

The U.K. is taking the lead in the euro zone with a projected GDP growth of 3 percent in 2014 and 2.6 percent in 2015, up from 1.7 percent in 2013. Private consumption is forecast to remain a key determinant of growth and an increase in investment spending is also projected. Due to the UK government still following a modest fiscal consolidation strategy to ease its debts and possible inflation, which might come along with the growth, overall government spending is still weak compared to the private side, but is ready to pick up. However, growth in the longer future will remain moderate. PwC’s 2014 UK Economic Outlook pointed out, “Government spending should continue growing over the next two years but at slower rate after the

NAS and storage area network (SAN) are both technologies that put storage on the network instead of on the server.

Among them, NAS offers a simpler and more cost-effective solution to ensure data reliability and integrity, which have become critical in the face of growing demand for securing data over a longer period of time.

“The Boston Marathon bombings of 2013 were solved using stored video footage from city surveillance, mass transit surveillance, and local businesses’ surveillance systems. That demonstrates the value of video surveillance and the importance of storing the video data in a reliable manner,” said Greg Pellegrino, Product Management Director of Pivot3.

In the past, storage was mostly attached to the server or workstation. Yet over time, demand for separation of storage and servers emerged, due to several reasons. First, better video quality resulted in a proportional increase in data, which put a strain on the server. Secondly, attaching storage to servers proved vulnerable to natural or manmade disasters, like 9/11, where everything was wiped out. A more risk-diversifying solution was needed.

Network-based storage, where data can be accessed and shared by a group of clients over the Internet, has thus gained popularity among home and enterprise users alike. For surveillance players, they can also benefit from this technology, which reduces the workload on the server and allows storage of videos at different

The history of HDDs goes way back; they were Introduced in the 1950s.

Yet for a long time, HDDs focused primarily on the storage of personal and corporate data and lacked surveillance applications. However, this has changed with the growing importance of the security industry. As camera resolutions get higher and video retention periods become longer, demand for HDDs that are bigger in volume and designed specifically for writing-intensive surveillance operations has increased.

In fact, it can be said that surveillance is a growth driver for the hard drive industry. A recent study by IHS predicted that revenue for both internal and external HDDs in video surveillance applications would rise from US$638.7 million in 2013 to $1 billion by 2017, a remarkable 57 percent increase. The market research firm attributed the increase in storage demand to various factors, including better performance and the use of high-resolution cameras. “The HDD industry as a whole will reap the benefits of a fast-growing video surveillance industry,” the report said.

Indeed, today’s HDDs come with advanced features, such as error detection and vibration tolerance, to make sure no data is lost. Capacity, which totals 4 terabytes (TB) in most of today’s enterprise-level HDDs, will only increase over time. All this is meant to ensure data reliability and integrity over a long period of time and boost the overall performance of the surveillance deployment.

Hard disk drives (HDDs) are the core of a storage system, which is critical in a surveillance installation. With growing demand for storage devices capable of storing bigger and more complex video data for longer periods of time, the need for higher-capacity and more reliable hard drives also rises. Today’s surveillance HDDs consume less power, have better error detection capabilities, and are designed specifically for intensive writing that is typical of surveillance operations. All this is intended to meet users’ growing storage needs.

reading intensive and the latter is designed for data writing most of the time. “Consumer electronics (CE) HDDs’ primary focus is entertainment systems, like a consumer DVR, where you typically record content and play it back over and over again. In this environment, smooth playback is very important,” said CN Chu, Technical Manager for Taiwan at Seagate.

Surveillance, on the other hand, requires constant writing of data as video feeds from different cameras are continuously transmitted to the storage device. HDDs for surveillance applications must therefore be designed from a writing-intensive perspective. “For surveillance applications, the customer needs an HDD that writes data 90 percent of the time, while reading accounts for just 10 percent or even 5 percent,” said Patrick Lo, Director of APAC Marketing, Digital Video and Data Center Storage Division at WD. “If there is no event, the video data is either retained or overwritten.”

Moreover, surveillance HDDs must be able to withstand lots of heat, being often enclosed in systems such as NAS or servers. Surveillance HDDs must also have more stringent fault tolerance requirements, able to perform even in the event of a components failure. Finally, consumer HDDs work at an average of eight hours a day, five days a

week. Surveillance HDDs, on the other hand, must work round-the-clock. And given surveillance systems are always on, HDDs with improved energy conservation features can help users save on power.

Features to ensure Data IntegrIty

Imagine the horror of not being able to find or retrieve a vital piece of data in the event of an accident. Since surveillance HDDs are tasked with storing piles upon piles of video data that is too valuable to be lost, they come with cutting-edge features to make sure all the data is kept securely and intact.

Error DetectionError detection is a feature that activates

when the system detects an impending HDD failure to allow the engineer to act accordingly, such as backing up data or making replacements. To make sure that error detection works, the HDD must be able to “shake hands” with the error detection software developed by the system manufacturer. “We do not just sell HDDs. In this industry, we sell a service and work with system manufacturers from the very beginning during the R&D stage,” Lo said.

Power ManagementThe more power a hard drive

consumes, the more heat it will emit. Overtime, this will shorten a hard drive’s life expectancy. Power management is therefore, in the words of Lo, “a topic that, for surveillance players, will never go out of style.”

Power management also plays a major role in the economics of running surveillance. “Because surveillance HDDs run 24x7, power consumption is a big deal. The less power required by the drive the lower overall cost of ownership for the end user — especially as you scale into larger
