REGULATIONS FOR

THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D)

In exercise of the powers conferred by Rules of SUMANDEEP VIDYAPEETH, Pipariya, the Academic Council of the University hereby makes the following Regulations for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in the faculty of Medical, Dental Sciences, Faculty of Allied Sciences (Pharmacy, nursing, Physiotherapy, Management).

1. SHORT TITLE AND COMMENCEMENT:

1.1 These Regulations may be called “THE REGULATIONS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PH.D) OF SUMANDEEP VIDYAPEETH, PIPARIYA”. These Regulations

shall come into force with effect from 1st November 2010 and are subject to such

modifications as may be approved by the Academic Council of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth from

time to time.

1.2 All thePh.Dprogram under this university shall be for ‘On Campus’ students only. The Sumandeep Vidyapeeth does not permit Ph.D program through distance

learning mode.

1.3 Sumandeep Vidyapeeth offers Ph.D programs in following faculties:

2 DEFINITION

1. A FULL TIME candidate is one who is not employed in any capacity and is fully

devoted to the Ph.D Research work. However, He/She may be assigned teaching

work as and when required.

2. OTHER Part Time candidates are those who are employed ‘on campus’. 3. Regular employees of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth Deemed to be University are eligible for “in

service” PhD programs in their respective faculty provided they meet the regulations thereto;

4. A TEACHER means a person engaged in full time teaching work in Sumandeep

Vidyapeeth.

5. RAC means Research Advisory committee.

6. Ph.D GUIDE means a full time Teacher who is employed in Sumandeep Vidyapeeth

and fulfills the requisite criteria for becoming a Ph.D guide as laid down by respective

councils or a competent authority.

2.1 PhD Regulation Committee (PRC)

2.6.1.1 There shall be a Research Board consisting of:

A. Chairman –Member nominated by vice chancellor

B. Deans of the Faculties

C. Senior Most Professor or in case there is no professor, the Senior Most

Associate Professor (Reader) in the teaching departments of the University.

D. CoE shall be the secretary of the committee.

2.6.1.2 The members other than the ex-officio members shall have a term of

three years and shall be eligible for re-nomination.

A. One third of the members shall constitute the quorum.

B. The recommendations of the committee PRC shall be placed before the Academic

Council.

C. The PRC shall meet at least twice in an academic session.

2.6.1.3 PRC shall be responsible for:

A. Promotion and maintenance of the standards of research.

B. To monitor and guide all research programmes including Doctoral research.

C. Identify Research and Development thrust areas within the frame work of the

objectives of the University.

D. Formulation of regulations and procedures for research development and consultancy

work.

E. Plan, initiate, review and oversee the research activities.

F. Evolve and implement multi-disciplinary programmesutilizing the infrastructure and

resources of the University gainfully.

2.6.1.4 Functions of the PRC

A. To recommend the minimum qualifications for recognition as supervisor for

research work.

B. To consider and recommend applications from teachers for recognition as

research supervisors.

C. To recommend names of distinguished persons from outside the University for

guiding research work.

D. To consider the cases for registration for doctoral degrees where there is

change of faculty.

E. To consider cases of difference of opinion between examiners of doctoral thesis

and other exceptional situations not expressly covered by the Regulations.

F. To consider any other matter referred to it by the authorities of

University or Vice-chancellor.

2.2 PhD Studies Committee:

PhD Studies Committee comprising of following member has been constituted to formulate,

implement, review the PhD studies; academic and research matter during the entire period

between admission and final defense.

The Committee shall look into; course work; including the allocation of hours per week for

research work (interaction with Guide). Engaging theory, practicals, tutorials, clinical

sessions etc in respective institutions/ college/department.Pre-PhD, RAC, Log books,

progressive periodic evaluation, semester seminars/exam, periodic monitoring of research

work etc. submission of thesis, Comprehensive Qualifying Examination (Seminar on draft

thesis), Recommend Candidates for final defense.

The Committee will submit six monthly report of each candidate to PhD Regulation

Committee, for further action.

3 ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

3.1. FACULTY OF DENTAL SCIENCES

3.1.1 FULL TIME CANDIDATE

A candidate who present himself/herself for the registration of the Degree of Doctor of

Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Faculty of Dental Sciences, shall possess a Bachelor degree of

Dental sciences (BDS) and shall also possess at least one of the following educational

qualifications awarded by this University or by any other recognized Indian University or

by any other foreign university as equivalent thereto with at least 50% of aggregate

marks obtained in the Post graduate examination:

• Degree of Master of Dental Surgery (M.D.S)

• Diplomat in National Boards (DNB) of India.

• Degree of master of sciences (M.Sc) in Dental Materials, Oral Biology, anatomy,

Physiology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Forensic Science, clinical

Research, Embryology etc.

• Master Degree in Dental science from Foreign University. This degree shall be

approved by Govt of India &/or Dental Council of India.

3.1.2 IN-SERVICECANDIDATE

A faculty /teacher of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth Deemed University who fulfills all the

eligibility criteria for pursuing PhD program shall be permitted to register himself / herself

to PhD program as an “in service candidate “in the same specialty where he/she is employed or in inter - disciplinary specialties, subject to the provisions thereto and under

the guide and co-guide as applicable.

Such in service candidates have to submit No Objection Certificate (NOC) from

respective HoD and HoI in prescribed format.

Such in service candidates shall agree to serve the constituent institution /

college/department for a minimum period of Two years after the award of PhD degree.

On discontinuation of service for reasons whatsoever, the PhD registration of such in

service candidates shall stand cancelled. However he/she may re-register for PhD

program as full time candidate.

The duration of PhD study for ‘in service candidate’ will be one year more than that from

minimum time span of fulltime candidates in respective faculty.

3.1.3 PART TIME CANDIDATE

Part time candidates must be a full time faculty of Dental sponsored by the concerned

institute / organization having the required research facilities. The candidate should

furnish a "No objection certificate" from his/her parent organization. Other terms &

conditions remain the same as in Sumandeep Vidyapeeth PhD Regulations for admission

to PhD Program. The Part time research students must have a minimum attendance of

sixty days in a year in the University.

3.2 FACULTY OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES

[PHARMACY, NURSING, PHYSIOTHERAPY AND MANAGEMENT]

3.2.1 FULL TIME CANDIDATES

A candidate who presents himself/herself for registration for the Degree of Doctor of

Philosophy (Ph.D) in Pharmacy / Nursing / Physiotherapy / Management shall process

following educational qualifications in respective discipline with minimum 50% marks

awarded by this University or any other recognized University or any other qualification

recognized by this University as equivalent thereto:

• Master’s Degree in Pharmacy / Nursing / Physiotherapy / Management

3.2.1.1 Such candidate shall submit an undertaking (Annexure-10) stating that he/she will

serve the institute during Ph.D program. On discontinuation of service from the

university for any reason. Whosesoever the Ph.D registration of such candidate shall

stand cancelled.

3.2.1.2 Such candidate shall also be required to give an undertaking that he/she shall

continue to work as an employee of the university for at least TWO years after award

of degree of Ph.D

3.2.2 In Service Candidate

Regular employees of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth Deemed to be University are eligible for “in service” PhD programs in their respective faculty provided they meet the regulations thereto;

3.2.3 Part time Candidate

Part time candidates must be a full time faculty of

Physiotherapy/Nursing/Pharmacy/Management sponsored by the concerned institute /

organization having the required research facilities. The candidate should furnish a "No

objection certificate" from his/her parent organization. Other terms & conditions remain

the same as in Sumandeep Vidyapeeth PhD Regulations for admission to PhD

Program. The Part time research students must have a minimum attendance of sixty

days in a year in the University.

3.3 FACULTY OF MEDICINE

3.3.1 FULL TIME CANDIDATE

A candidate, who presents himself / herself for the registration of the Degree of Doctor of

Philosophy (Ph.D) in Faculty of Medicine, shall possess.

3.3.1.1 The degree of master of science (M.Sc) in the subject of Anatomy / Physiology /

Biochemistry / Pharmacology / Microbiology, Obtained from a Medical College

Recognized by Medical Council of India or

3.3.1.2 Master degree / DNB / in dental science awarded by this university or by any

other recognized Indian University or of any other foreign university equivalent

thereto shall be eligible to register for the Ph.D Degree program in Faculty of

Medicine under a recognized Guide of this university as a ‘Full time Research Candidate’

3.3.1.3 Vide MCI regulation on PhD (Doctor of Philosophy); it is resolved as under;

PhD degree shall be instituted in all subjects wherever recognized post graduate

degree in Medical subjects are awarded by this Deemed University subject to

fulfillment of the following guideline.

(a). PhD shall be awarded only aftercompletionof MD or MS or PG Diploma or MSc

in Medical subjects.

(b). The minimum period of training for PhD shall be Two yearsfor candidates who

possess MD or MS and Three years for PG Diploma and candidates with M.Sc

(Medical subjects).- for in-service candidates there will be an additional year of

research.

3.3.3 IN-SERVICE CANDIDATE:

3.3.3.1 A faculty /teacher of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth Deemed University who fulfills all

the eligibility criteria for pursuing PhD program shall be permitted to register

himself / herself to PhD program as an “in service candidate “in the same specialty where he/she is employed or in inter - disciplinary specialties, subject to

4. DURATION OF RESEARCH WORK

4.1 Duration of PhD program:

I. Medical Faculty:

• Full Time candidates holding MD/MS qualifications- Two years(Max-4 years)

• Full Time candidates holding Diploma/ M.Sc (Medical) qualifications- Three years

(Max-6 years)

• In-Service candidates with MD/MS qualifications- Three years (Max-6 years)

• In-Service candidates holding Diploma/ M.Sc (Medical) qualifications- Four years

(Max-8 years)

II. Dental Faculty:

• Full Time candidates- Three years (Max-6 years)

• In-Service candidates-Four years (Max-8 years)

iii) Allied Health Sciences Faculty: Physiotherapy, Nursing, management and

Pharmacy faculties;

• Full Time candidates- Minimum Three years (Max-6 years)

• In-Service candidates-Minimum Four years (Max-8 years)

4. PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION

5.1 Eligibility Criteria

a) Candidates with MD / MS, DM / MCh /PG Diploma/ MSc (Medical) degree from MCI

recognized college /Institution are eligible for PhD Programs in Medical faculty.

b) Candidates with MDS or equivalent Master's degree from DCI recognized college /

Institution are eligible forPhD Programs in Dental faculty.

c) Candidate with PG degree in Physiotherapy (MPT), PG degree in Nursing (MSc) and

PG degree inPharmacy (M Pharm) from a college / Institution Recognized by INC /

IAP/ PCI / MBA as the case may be areeligible for PhD Programs in Allied Health

Sciences faculty.

d) Regular employees of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth Deemed University are eligible for "in

service" PhD programsin their respective faculty provided they meet the regulations

thereto;

e) Candidate must have scored minimum of 50% of marks at the qualifying

examinations mentioned above.

5.2 ENTRANCE EXAMINATION OF SUMANDEEP VIDYAPEETH

6.2.1 The Sumandeep Vidyapeeth shall be conducting an all-India based Entrance

examination for the admission to Ph.D program after due advertisement /

Notification.

6.2.2 The Patten of the Entrance examination shall be as under:

6.2.3 Minimum 50% marks from the sections taken together, shall be require to be eligible

for provisional admission.

6.2.4 Examination will be held in Examination hall of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth Deemed

University, Pipariya, Vadodara

5.2.3 Entrance Test Details:

• The entrance test shall be conducted by the Sumandeep Vidyapeeth PhD Entrance

Test Secretariat as per the notification issued by the University.

• Duration of test will be three hours.

• The entrance test shall have Three sections with a total of 150 marks;

• For each correct answer candidate will earn 1 mark. There will be no negative

marking. If a question has not been attempted no credit will be given. The questions

will be of Post Graduate level

i) Section-I: General Aptitude -50 marks

The General Aptitude Test shall comprise of 50 questions of objective type with multiple

choices For each correct answer candidate will earn 1 mark. There will be no negative

marking. If a question has not been attempted no credit will be given. The questions will

be distributed into various areas as follows

A. Quantitative Aptitude -20 marks

B. Analytical Ability and Logical Reasoning -10 marks

C. Test of English -10 marks

D. General Awareness -10 marks

ii) Section-II: Research Methodology and Bio-Statistics – 50 marks

This section on Research Methodology and Bio-statistics shall be descriptive type

and will comprise of questions of varied marks.

iii) Section-III: Subject/Specialty specific – 50 marks

Subject/Specialty specific section shall comprise of 50 questions of objective type

with multiple Choices.

5.3 ADMISSION:

5.3.1 The eligible candidate shall be interviewed and his/her documents shall be

scrutinized by the admission committee. The allocation of the Ph.D topic/subject

of the faculty shall be finalized by the admission committee. In addition each

doctoral candidate shall discuss his/her research interest.

5.3.2 A merit list of successful candidate shall be presared by considering 60% marks

obtained in the qualifying examination and 40% marks from the interview.

5.3.3 A list of admitted students shall be prepared depending on the availability of

number of seats. The candidate shall be offered admission in the order of merit.

The list of admitted candidates shall be sent to the respective department of the

faculty. Remaining candidates shall be kept on waiting list which shall be valid till

next entrance examination.

5.4 Research Guide (PhD-Guide)

5.4.1 Medical faculty

A guide for the PhD degree shall not have less than fifteen years of teaching and

research experience after obtaining his/her post graduate qualification and shall

also have not less than ten years of post graduate teaching experience as faculty.

He/she should also have five research article publications in indexed national or

international journals either as first or second author.

5.4.2 Dental Faculty.

Any senior teacher intending to become a guide for PhD program should;

(i) Have not less than ten years of teaching and research experience after obtaining

his/her post graduate qualification out of which at least five years shall be post

graduate teaching experience.

(ii) Have research publications of minimum Five papers in National or International

indexed journals as first or second author or in any journal as specified by the Dental

council of India including the specialty journal as first author or three publication and

one systematic review article in indexed journal (short communication, abstracts,

paper presentations will not be considered as research publications)

5.4.3 Allied Health Sciences (Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Nursing,

Management)

A teacher with PhD qualifications in the concerned specialty with a teaching/research

experience of ten years and publication of minimum five research articles in peer

reviewed journal either as first or second author are eligible to be PhD guides for

candidates pursuing research leading to award of PhD degree in Physiotherapy,

Pharmacy, management and Nursing faculty.

(i) However in case of Physiotherapy a professor with ten years of teaching

experience after MD/MS qualification in concerned subject of Medical faculty

related to Physiotherapy such as Anatomy, Physiology, Medicine, Surgery,

Orthopedic, Neurology, Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, etc. shall be

considered as PhD guides provided he/she fulfills all the other criteria to become

PhD guide. Faculty member with seven years of experience after DM

(Neurology, Cardiology) and MCh (Cardiovascular surgery, Neurosurgery)

qualifications can also be the guide for PhD in Physiotherapy faculty.

(ii) A senior teacher with M Sc (Nursing) with 15 years of teaching and research

experience after obtaining his/her post graduate qualification out of which

minimum 10 years as post graduate teacher and with five research article

publications in indexed national or international journals either as first or second

author shall be eligible to be PhD guide in Nursing faculty. This provision will be

in force for a period of five years (till Academic Year 2016-17).Further in case of

Nursing faculty; a professor with ten years of teaching experience after MD/MS

qualifications from clinical specialties of Medical faculty can be considered as

PhD guide for Nursing faculty provided he/she fulfills all the other criteria to

become PhD guide in his/her parent faculty.

5.4.5 Guide Approval

Internal and External Guide is subject to approval by the Academic Council of

Sumandeep Vidyapeeth Deemed University.

5.4.6 Applications

The Internal and External Guides should submit an application in a prescribed

format to “The Secretary, PhD Regulations Committee Sumandeep Vidyapeeth

Deemed University”, who then will process the applications as per laid down norms.

5.4.7 Age of the Guide

PhD guide having less than four years of service shall not be accepted as PhD

Guide.

5.4.8 Restriction on number of candidates

A guide shall not undertake to offer guidance for PhD work for more than EIGHT

candidates at any given time.

5.4.9 Allocation of research guide / supervisor:

5.4.9.1 The admitted candidates shall be allocated to the university recognized Ph.D

guide formally in the PhD Regulation committee meeting.

5.4.9.2 Candidates shall be allocated to the guides depending on the ratio of number of

students per research guide and the research interest of the students as

indicated during interview. In any case, the allotment / allocation of supervisor

shall not be to the individual student or teacher.

5.4.9.3 However where Guide is not available in the respective subject of the faculty,

then an eligible/recognized Guide of any other subject from the same or related

faculty shall be allocated by the PhD Regulation committee.

5.5 PROVISIONAL ADMISSION

A candidate shall be provisionally admitted to the University for Ph.D program by

submitting a duly filled prescribed form along with necessary documents as under.

• Copy of post graduate degree certificate

• Mark sheet of Entrance Examination

• Copy of the Fellowship award certificate (if any)

• Sponsorship certificate (if any)

• Copy of Recent Publications (of last four years) (if any)

• Service certificate (if applicable)

• Six printed copies of synopsis of the Research proposal in a prescribed format

along with a soft copy.

• Two passport size recent photograph

5.6 RESEARCH ADVISORY COMMITTEE (RAC)

5.6.1 The Vice-Chancellor of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth shall constitute a specialty / subject

wise research Advisory committee for each faculty, comprising of Research-Director,

faculty Dean, Faculty Ph.D Coordinator, respective Head of the Department (shall be

recognizedPh.D guide), Ph.D guide/s and PhD program coordinator/Deputy Registrar

(A & E). THE Dean of the Faculty shall work as the Chairman of the RAC.

5.6.2 The RAC shall review the research proposal submitted by the candidate at the time of

provisional admission and shall recommend the acceptance of research proposal. The

candidate shall make a power point presentation of the proposed research to the

RAC.

5.6.3 The RAC, if required shall direct a candidate to submit the revised research proposal

incorporating the recommendations made by it within a period of ONE month. once

the revised research proposal is accepted, the candidate shall be recommended for

provisional registration

5.6.4 It shall be mandatory for all the provisionally registered candidates to seek the

clearance of proposed research work from the institutional Ethics committee and/or

institutional Animal Ethics committee, whichever is applicable for confirmation

provisional registration.

5.6.5 Candidate who fails to get clearance from the research Advisory Committee or/and

Ethics Committee(s) shall not be registered for the Ph.D degree and his/her

application the same will stand cancelled and no refund of registration and application

fees will be permissible.

5.6.6 The candidate who fails to appear before the institutional Ethics committee and /or the

institutional animal ethics committee on a stipulated date(s) without prior permission or

valid reason, the committee may recommend cancellation of provisional registration

granted to the candidate.

5.6.7 The research Advisory committee shall monitory the research work of the candidate

concerned periodically, record his/her progress six monthly in the prescribed format

(ANNEXURE - V) and send it to the controlled of examinations. It shall also review the

overall research work done before final submission of the thesis by the research

scholar.

5.6.8 And change in the membership of the R.A.C shall be effected only on approval by the

Vice-Chancellor

5.7 COMMENCEMENT OF ACADEMIC SESSION:

The Academic session for the Ph.D program shall commence in June of every year.

6. COURSE WORK

6.1. The registered candidate for the degree of doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) shall undertake

course work for a minimum period of six months. The course work shall be treated pre

Ph.D preparation, and shall include a course on area of research, research methodology,

and biostatistics and computer applications.

6.2. The Sumandeep Vidyapeeth though the respective department, shall conduct an

objective and /or subjective type of examination at the end of six months.

6.3. The minimum marks required for passing the examination shall 50%. It is the pre

requisite for the candidate to proceed further with the writing of the thesis.

6.4. In case a candidate fails to pass the examination in FIVE attempts, his/her registration

shall be cancelled. Payment of fees for writing the examination at the end of first year and

inability to write this examination shall be deemed as an attempt.

7. INTER-DISCIPLINARY RESEARCH

7.1. A candidate registered for a Ph.Dprogramme shall carry out research work

essentially under guidance of his/her Ph.D guide.

7.2. A candidate can purpose inter-disciplinary research work in other concerned

department / institute recognized by the university. However the work at the

said department / institute shall carried out under the guidance of qualified.

7.3. The co-guide/s may work as co-opted member/s of the RAC for the candidate.

8. RECOGNISED INSTITUTIONS FOR Ph.D DEGREE

Candidate who has registered for the Degree of Doctor Philosophy (Ph.D) shall pursue research

under the supervision of a Ph.D guide in any one of the following Departments /Institutions,

Recognized by this University Namely:-

• Any department / institute of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth;

• Postgraduate Departments of recognized University or college situated within the country

having necessary facilities carrying out research in the branch of study concerned provided

the department has been offering the postgraduate course a minimum period of three

years;

• All India Research Institutions, Regional Research Institutions or any other Non teaching

Research Institution having necessary facilities for carrying research in the branch of study

concerned and approved by this University.

• For the purpose granting recognition to an institution no covered under clause 9.1 above,

the request made by such institution may be considered by Academic Council of this

University and on its recommendation the final decision be taken by the Vice - Chancellor.

9. CHANGE OF GUIDES AND TRANSFER OF SCHOLARS

9.1. In case of department, retirement, or death of a Ph.D guide, the candidates registered

under him/her shall be re-allocated top other recognized guide/s in the subject by the

RAC with the permission of Vice- Chancellor.

9.2. When a guide is not available for period of six months of more to leave/lien/deputation,

RAC shall allocate such student to other eligible guide in absence of a co-guide, till the

guide becomes available.

10. PROGRESS OF THE RESEARCH WORK:

10.1. A candidate shall submit progress report of his/her research work every Sixmonths in the

prescribed format to the PhD coordinator which will be present to RAC.

10.2. The RAC shall review the progress of research and shall advice the candidate with

regard to further work. The RAC shall submit its report back to the PhD coordinator.

10.3. The candidate shall be required to make a presentation of his/her research work done

before the RAC every year for the purpose of evolution and further guidance. The RAC

shall send the report of the same to the PhD coordinator.

10.4. If a candidate fails to submit two consecutive six monthly progress report or/and fails to

appear before RAC for presenting progress of research work on one occasion without

valid reason/s communicated in advance to the PhD coordinator, the RAC shall

recommend to the PhD coordinatorfor cancelling his/her registration.

10.5. In case of unsatisfactory research work by the candidate, the RAC shall record the

reason/s for the same, advice and suggest correctives measures. If the candidate fails to

incorporate these corrective measures, the Research Advisory committee may

recommend to the Vice- Chancellor with substantial reasons though the PhD coordinator

for cancellation of the registration.

10.6. Procedure to be followed FOR evaluation of PhD

A) Pre- PhD exam.

B) Synopsis evaluation.

C) Six monthly performance reports.

D) Pre-Defence seminar.

E) Final Defence.

11. CANCELLATION OF THE Ph.D REGISTRATION

11.1. In case of recommendation for cancellation of the registration by the RAC, the candidate

shall be intimated by the controller of examination about the grounds on which the

registration is being proposed for cancellation. In case of any representation from the

candidate, the controller of Examinations shall refer the matter to the Vice - chancellor,

who may either suggest cancellation of registration or refer the matter back to the

respective RAC for reconciliation or necessary action as it may deem fit. The decision of

the Vice-chancellor shall be final.

11.2. A candidate who fails to submit the completed thesis within the prescribed period or has

fails to do so within the notified extended period, if any, the registration of such candidate

shall stand lapsed automatically and such candidate shall discharged from the

Ph.Dprogramme. However, such a candidate may, if he/she desires so, apply for re-

registration for the Ph.D degree after complying with the procedure prescribed under

these regulations.

12. CHANGE OF TOPIC OF RESEARCH

12.1. If a candidate desires to change the topic research on substantial grounds, he/she shall

make an application to PhD coordinatorthough the guide.

12.2. The PhD coordinator will put the application to RAC which will consider such application

on merit and may recommend change of the topic of research.

12.3. Permission for change in the topic of research may be granted by the Vice- chancellor.

No further change shall be permitted thereafter.

12.4. The candidate shall be required to comply with all the procedure for registration of the

new topic.

12.5. However, the duration of research period shall commence from the date of registration of

new topic.

13. TITLE OF THE THESIS

13.1. The exact title of the thesis shall be intimated to the RAC at the time of submission of the

research proposal.

13.2. Any request made for change of title of the thesis after the submission of the research

proposal but within period of three months of provisional registration shall be before the

research Advisory committee for its consideration.

13.3. The change in the title of the thesis shall be allowed only once and ion recommendation

by the research Advisory committee. The RAC shall intimate the change in the title, if

any, to the candidate and the controller of examination.

14. SYNOPSIS

14.1. After completion of research work the candidate shall be required to submit the entire

research work to his/her guide for approval.

14.2. After approval of the research work by the guide, the candidate shall submit SIX copies of

synopsis to the PhD coordinatorfor its approval from RAC.

14.3. The candidate shall make a digital audio-visual presentation of his/her research work

before the member of RAC. The said synopsis shall be modified suitably, if needed,

based on the suggestions of the committee. This step shall beconsidered as preliminary

examination prior to the submission of Doctoral thesis.

14.4. The final approval copy of synopsis after incorporating all changes, if any, suggested by

RAC, shall be given to controller of examination.

14.5. Conditions for submission of PhD synopsis.

A. As per the prescribed proforma

B. Clearance from Sumandeep Vidyapeeth Institutional Ethical Committee (SVIEC) –

registered with Dreg Controller General of India.

C. Clearance from Institutional Animal Ethical Committee (IAEC) registered with

Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision on Experiments on Animals

(CPCSEA); wherever applicable.

D. To be submitted to the university within six month from the date of registration

15. SUBMISSION OF THESIS

15.1 After the acceptance of synopsis by the university, the candidate shall submit SIX copies

of thesis, duly signed by the guide, co-guide(s) if any, and head of the department along

with TWO copies in computer disc within three months from the final approved version of

the synopsis to the controller of examination through the RAC in confidential cover.

15.2 It shall be mandatory for the candidate to publish at least TWO Research papers from the

research work done for this thesis in peer reviewed, indexed journal(s) before submission

of thesis.

15.3 The title page of the thesis, cover, format, etc., shall strictly conform to the format of

presentable by the university and shall carry a declaration by the candidate and

certificate duly signed and issued by the guide, co-guide(s) if any, Head of the

Department and Faculty Dean.

15.4 Supplementary papers to the thesis like printed copies of any contribution to the

knowledge of the subject may also be appended to the thesis by the research scholar.

15.5 The thesis shall be submitted to the PhD coordinatorwithin six months of synopsis

presentation.

15.6 Where a Ph.D candidate has submitted the synopsis but is unable to submit the thesis

within the time prescribed extension of time for submission of thesis may be granted by

the Vice-Chancellor subject to maximum of two more years valid reasons, on payment of

penalty fees as may be prescribed.

16 . EXAMINERS

16.1 The Research Advisory Committee shall forward the list of FOUR external examiners

along with the six copies of thesis to the controller of Examinations. The internal and

external examiner shall fulfill the criteria of Eligibility of guide as mentioned in above

clause 8.0 for appointment as examiner.

16.2 The controller of examination in consolation with the vice chancellor shall appoint nay

TWO external examinations for evolution of the thesis. However for an independent

research candidate, the number of external examiners shall be TWO for evolution of

thesis.

16.3 For conduction viva-voce examination

• ONE internal and ONE External examiner shall be appointed in case of full time

and other than full time candidates. the external examiner shall be one of the two

external examiners who had evaluated the thesis of the candidate.

• In case independent research candidate, any TWO of the THREE External

examiners, who had evaluated the thesis, shall be appointed as external

examiners.

16.4 The internal examiner shall be any one of the Ph.D guide from the subject / department in

which the candidate has registered.

16.5 However when the internal examiner of the concerned subject is not available, then the

Ph.D guide from any other subject of same Faculty or the Faculty Dean shall be

appointed as an internal examiner.

16.6 When first panel of FOUR Ph.D external examiners are unable to accept the examiner -

ship, the Controller of Examination shall seek names for an additional panel of examiners

from the RAC. The additional panel is also unable to accept the examiner ship, the vice-

chancellor shall appoint examiner(s) as required in consultation with the head of

department / Dean in the relevant discipline.

16.7 The convener for the Ph.D examination shall be the Head of the Department of the

concerned subject. However if Head of the Department is independent research

candidate, than Dean / Principal of the institute shall act as the convener of the

examination. The convener shall act as internal examiner in case of full time and other

than full time candidates. The convener shall act as examiner in case of independent

research candidate.

17. EVALUATION OF THESIS AND DEFENCE VIVA- VOCE

EXAMINATION

15.1. A copy of thesis shall be sent to external examiners for evaluation.

15.2. The external examiners who had evaluated the thesis shall ordinarily report to the controller of

examination on the merit of the thesis for Ph.D Degree as “Highly Commended “, “Commended” or “Not Commended” in the prescribed format, along with a detailed report within 30 days from the date of receipt of the thesis.

15.3. At least 50% of the external examiners shall commend the thesis.

15.4. A candidate, whose thesis has not been commended, shall be permitted to resubmit the corrected

/ modified thesis as suggested by the external examiners within a period of one year to the

controller of the examination. In such cases, the candidate will automatically be considered for an

extension for Ph.D program.

15.5. No candidate shall be permitted to submit the thesis or take the Defense viva-voca examination

for Ph.D Degree for more than FOUR attempts

15.6. When the thesis is approved the candidate shall ready himself/herself for aDefense viva - voca

examination, to be conducted before the internal examiner (Convener) and one external examiner

who evaluated the thesis. The viva voce will related only to the Research area / thesis. Such

public viva-voce examination will be conducted only in the SUMANDEEP VIDYAPEETH premises.

15.7. If none of the external examiners who evaluated the thesis is available, another examiner from the

panel may be appointed by the vice-chancellor. The internal examiner (convener) shall convey to

the controller of examinations the result of such public viva-voce examination,duly endorsed by

the external examiner. A candidate who is successful in the viva-voce examination shall be

declared to have qualified for the Ph.D Degree with effect from the date of the public viva-voce

examination.

15.8. A candidate, who is not successful in the defense viva-voce, shall be permitted to appear for the

viva voce another time, within a period of three months.

18. FEE STRUCTURE FOR Ph.D CANDIDATES

F) Application fee, Tuition fee, Registration fee, Examination fee etc. shall be payable by the

candidate as prescribed by the University from time to time.

G) The security deposit shall be refunded only after successful completion of PhD.

Programme.

H) In case the candidate discontinues the Ph.Dprogramme irrespective of duration of joining,

the security deposit shall be forfeited and he/she will have to pay the remaining fees of

the years left.

I) Fees structure for PhD Program:

• Registration Fee – stipulated from time to time.

• Tuition Fee as fixed and reviewed from time to time. Per annum for full

timecandidates.

• Caution Deposited as notified.

• Fees for “in Service “candidates is waved off subject to their meeting “in Service” PhD Terms and Conditions.

• External candidates (outside the Sumandeep Vidyapeeth) may be considered for

stipendiary Senior Residency positions in medical/dental colleges if such a vacancy

is available. For deserving candidates, the fee waiver can also can be considered.

Otherwise, the PhD for external candidates is full time, on campus and unpaid

(candidates will have to bear all expenses including accommodation and mess

charges) program.

B) PUBLICATION OF THE THESIS:

The thesis, only on approval, shall be published in full as a book with the permission of the RAC.

However, the candidate during the course of his/her research shall have to publish or must receive

the acceptance for getting published atleast TWO papers in indexed journal/s. in such instances,

the candidate shall append the reprint copies of published papers or the acceptance letter in the

copies of Ph.D. thesis submitted to the University by him/her.

C) AWARD OF DEGREE:

A) On completion of the evaluation process, the successful candidate shall be awarded the degree

of ‘Doctor of Philosophy’ mentioning the Faculty. The subject in which he/she was enrolled. B) The Sumandeep Vidyapeeth shall also issue a Provisional Certificate certifying that the

degree of Ph.D has been awarded in accordance with the provisions of the University

Grants Commission (UGC) regulations for Ph.D.

D) DEPOSITORY WITH UGC:

The Registrar of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth shall submit a soft of Ph.D thesis to the UGC within thirty

days from the award of Ph.D. degree.

E) DECISION BY VICE - CHANCELLOR:

In all other matters not specifically covered under these regulations, the Vice- Chancellor may take a

decision having regard to the circumstances of the case and if he/she deems necessary he/she may

refer the matter to the Academic council, for suitable recommendations before taking such decisions.

FUNCTION OF RESEARCH ADVISORY COMMITTEE

1. The vice- chancellor of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth shall constitute a specialty/ subject

wise research advisory committee for each faculty, comprising of Research-Director,

Faculty Dean, Faculty Ph.D Coordinator, respective head of the department (shall be

recognized PhD guide), Research guide/s and Deputy Registrar (A&E). The Dean of

the Faculty shall work as the Chairman of the RAC.

2. To discuss, advice, and recommend on all matters connected with the candidate’s research from provisional registration till the submission of the thesis.

3. The academic members of the research advisory committee shall be recognized PhD

guide.

4. The research advisory committee shall have regular meeting at the university,

convened soon after provisional registration and constitution of the committee to

personally interview candidate.

5. To review the research proposal submitted by the candidate at the time of provisional

admission and shall recommend the acceptance of research proposal. The candidate

shall make a power point presentation of the proposed research to the RAC.

PART TIME- PhD Programme

(UGC REGULATION 2009 & UGC NOTIFICATION NO F.1.1/2002 (PS)/EXEMP.PART FILE –III DATED MARCH 2011)

Overview of Ph D programme is applicable to candidates admitted under (Part Time) Ph D scheme.

I. Introduction

Candidates, who are working in reputed research organizations, academic Institutes and industries, situated preferably in the close vicinity of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth Campus, is not

consistent with eligibility criterion at bullet no 1 i.e “ part Time candidates from outside the institutes must be a full time/regular faculty of Medicine/ Dental and Allied Health Science.

They will choose one of the Sumandeep Vidyapeeth faculties as supervisor for his/her research work.

II. Eligibility Criteria

• Part time candidates from outside the institute must be a full time/regular faculty of

Medicine/ Dental /Allied Science with minimum of 2 years experience at the time of

admission and sponsored by the concerned institute / organization.

• Institution from where candidate seeks PhD admission must be SVDU recognized

”Research Centre”

• The candidate should be working in an organization which encourages and facilitates

research.

• He/she meets the requisite minimum qualification for admission to Ph. D programme

of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth.

• The candidate should furnish a "consent & no objection certificate" from his/her

parent organization.

Other terms & conditions remain the same as in Sumandeep Vidyapeeth PhD Regulations for

Admission to PhD Programme. The Part time research students must have a minimum

attendance of sixtydays in a year in the University

ANNEXURE III-RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

Research fellowship

1. Introduction

The Research Fellowship in Medical/Dental/Allied Health Sciences by SV is awarded to meritorious students. The fellowship is open to candidates who have registered for Ph.D. in Medical/Dental/Allied Health Sciences in SV (Full Time-External Candidate) – 10% of the

total qualified and admitted students are entitled for the fellowship as per the faculty wise admissions.Part Time Students are not entitled to avail the research fellowship

2. Objective

The objective of Research fellowship is to provide opportunity to meritorious candidates to undertake advanced studies and research leading to Ph.D. degrees in Medical/Dental/Allied

Health Sciences.

3. Eligibility

The candidates who have been registered for Ph.D. in Medical/Dental/Allied Health Science subjects in SV are eligible for the fellowship-(Full Time-External Candidate)

4. Nature of Assistance Available Under the Scheme

The tenure of fellowship is initially for two years under the SV scheme. Upon expiry of this period, the work of the Fellow will be evaluated by Experts Committee to be set up by the

Sumandeep Vidyapeeth. If the research work is found satisfactory, his/her tenure may be extended for a further period of one year. In case the work for the two years is not found

satisfactory, an additional year will be given to him/her for improvement. In such cases work will be evaluated again after year, and if improvement is found, the Fellow will get one year period under the SV Scheme. Thus, the total period of fellowship is three years, with

no further provision of extension.

Financial Assistance:

Fellowship: @ Rs.10,000/-p.m.

Contingency @ Rs.10,000/-p.a.

Leave:

The leave entitlement for research fellow will remain the same as that for other PG students

in the Sumandeep Vidyapeeth.

5. Procedure for Application

Only those candidates who have been registered as full time (external candidate) for Ph.D.

in Medical/Dental/Allied Health Science subjects in SV are eligible to apply in the structural format provided by the Sumandeep Vidyapeeth

6. Procedure for Release of Grant

On receipt of the names, bio-data and joining report of the selected candidates from the Department or Constituent College of SV, the Account office of SV will accept the

candidature of the Fellow and will release the first installment of admissible grants to the Institution/ University on a yearly basis, from the date of joining in a lump sum manner.

7. Procedure for Monitoring the Progress of the Scheme

The performance of the Research Fellow is monitored by their respective supervisor/guide and reflected in the yearly progress report submitted to the University for Submission to the UGC office.

On completion of first two years of the award, the Fellow may apply to the

department/university concerned for continuation. For this purpose, a three-member Committee consisting of the Supervisor, Head of Department and one Outside Expert in the

concerned subject will be constituted by the Institution to evaluate the research work done by the Fellow. On Recommendations/Comments of the Committee, the Fellow will be allowed to continue. The concerned departments are expected to monitor the work of the

Fellow continuously. He/she shall not accept or hold any position, paid or otherwise, or receive emoluments, salary, stipend, etc. from other sources during the tenure of the

award. The fellowship may be terminated by the SV, on the recommendation of the University at any time during the tenure and the decision of the SV will be final and binding. The tenure of the fellowship is for four years from the date of joining, subject to satisfactory

progress report of the Fellow or submission of Ph.D. thesis, whichever is earlier. No extension is permissible beyond the total tenure of four years and the awardee ceases to be

a SV Research Fellow under the scheme of SV immediately after expiry of the due date. Any claim/reference to this effect will be illegal and the individual may have to face disciplinary

action for such an act.

Note: - The tenure of research fellowship should not exceed the minimum stipulated period of doctoral period 1.e 2 or 3 years (full time-external candidate) as the case may be.

ANNEXURE – SPECIFICATIONS FOR DISSERTATION

Candidate submitting thesis for the University degree are required to follow the rules noted

below regarding the size, style and binding of the thesis. Only in special cases in which the Head of the Institution is satisfied, there may be relaxation in compliance.

1. Every candidate shall submit six copies of his/her thesis along with two soft copies in PDF format as per the INFLIBNET format.

2. The copies shall be bound in accordance with the following specifications.

3. Save thesis in MS Word (6.0 version or more) format and/or in PDF copy

4. Save thesis using a file name in the pattern “Author.doc” where author is the surname of the author.

THIS INDENTURE WITNESSETH AS FOLLOWS:

I. Where as “the SV” is UGC recognized Deemed to be University vide Government

of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development notification declaring the

Institute as ‘Deemed to be University’ F.9-46/2004.U-3 dated 17 January,

2007.and Registrar being the Chief Administrative Officer of “SV”. II. And whereas “the SV” has decided to permit “in Service Candidate” (Staff) for the

Ph. D degree in the Ph. D programme;

And Whereas the above named “in Service Candidate” is qualified and shown his

readiness and willingness to undergo the said programme on a condition that “in

Service Candidate” would serve “the SV” continuously for a period of two years

immediately after completion of Ph. D programme as mention in the Agreement.

1. “The SV” has principally agreed to permit “in Service Candidate” to undergo the programme in the field of___________________ in the

2. The said “in Service Candidate” is fully aware that he is permitted on condition that he/she will continuously serve “the SV” as __________________ for period of two Years from the date of his / her successful completion of Ph. D programme SV.

4. (a) Further the in-service Candidate will execute willingness to deduct

4 .(b) The terms may be as under:- That in case of his/her failure in the course or for

any other reasons, if he/she leave the educational term uncompleted, or due to any

other default on his/her part; SV shall have the legal rights against him/her or against

the sureties mentioned here in below, to recover the amount of total fee fixed for the Ph.

D programme course of said years treated as free ship during the period of his/her

studies as Ph. D programme student at the SV along with the interest thereon.

5. During the substance of this agreement if there will be dispute in respect of this

agreement, the decision of “the SV” will be final and legal action will be subject to the

jurisdiction of Vadodara.

III. IN WITNESS WHEREOF THE PARTIES HERETO HAVE PUT THEIR SIGNATURES ON

THIS DAY AND YEAR HEREINBEFORE MENTIONED.

IV. I Undersigned “in Service Candidate” has read and understood the terms and

conditions of this agreement and he/she is executing this agreement with his /her free

consent, without any undue influence, misrepresentation. At the time of singing the

agreement, he/she is in full consciousness and in sound mind. He / She further state

influenced me to do so.
