MISSION ACTION DAY (MAD)

Each year the College celebrates St John Baptist de la Salle Founder’s Day. FSC, the initials used after the Brothers’ name, represents

Faith, Service and Community. These principles are identified and celebrated on Friday 13th September.

In the morning we gathered as a faith community in Mass to celebrate the life and work of St John Baptist de la Salle. This was Father

Ronnie’s first full school Mass and we thank him kindly for this. This was followed by various fundraising activity stalls which

exemplified the principle of service modelled by the Lasallian Brothers. The day concluded with a talent quest to showcase the

creative talents of our students. There was a great sense of community spirit and co-operation and all these community activities

fostered the personal and spiritual growth of all involved.

I congratulate the students and staff, who have staged several fundraising events throughout this term as well as on Friday to raise

funds to contribute towards the urgently needed construction of water wells at La Salle High School Campus 2, Faisalabad in Pakistan.

SYDNEY CATHOLIC SOUTHERN REGION PRIMARY SCHOOLS ANNUAL PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION

For the second year Catholic primary schools in our cluster implemented the Public Speaking Program in their schools. St Mary ’s

Catholic Primary Georges Hall, St Brendan’s Central Bankstown, St John Vianney Catholic Primary Greenacre and Christ the King Bass

Hill all participated in the program. The public speaking program benefits all students in Years 3-6, as it gives them opportunities to

develop strong speaking skills and confidence to speak in front of a large group of people. Each school holds their own class finals and

school finals.

Last week the Public Speaking Cluster Year 3 and 4 finals were held at Christ the King Catholic Primary School, Bass Hill

I thank Mr Cartledge and Ms Fengitis for adjudicating these finals. It is always a great opportunity to assist our feeder schools in any

way.

SILVER AWARD

This year LaSalle implemented the new Merit Award system which recognises

students’ achievements, service and commitment to the College. Congratulations

to Kiara Hearne of Year 9 who is the College’s first recipient of the prestigious

Silver Award. Kiara received a certificate and Silver badge at her Year Assembly

during the week.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend.

FROM OUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL: MS LEONIE DOWD

God bless,

Leonie Dowd

On Thursday, the 5th September, ten Year 10 Lasallian Youth Leaders assisted in the Year 6

Confirmation Retreat at St Felix Catholic Primary School. The day was a success in learning

about the gifts of the Holy Spirit and various Saints, whilst students displayed their unique

gifts and talents to the year group.

I would like to thank Marko, Hamida, Joey, Dounya, Marcus, Tevita, Harriet, Martina, Chade

and Fares for their amazing assistance on the day!

THE PERFECTIONISM WORKBOOK FOR TEENS

Many high achieving young people struggle with some level of perfectionism. This

concern about how others will judge their work can lead to unrealistic expectations,

stress and the child placing unnecessary pressure on themselves to perform above and

beyond expectations.

The College actively discourages perfectionism, instead promoting the idea that every

child should do their own personal best, and explicitly teaching about growth mindset

and healthy expectations of one's own performance in both the Newman and College-

wide pastoral programs.

The Perfectionism Workbook for Teens is a new resource to the College library that will

help students trying to move past perfectionistic tendencies.

Filled with lots of tips and activities to help students better value their own work, this

resource is now available to be borrowed by students from the Learning Centre.

FROM SAINT YON TRADE TRAIING CENTRE: MRS MARGARET PHILLIPS

On Wednesday 28th August Saint Yon students, accompanied by their families and members of

staff from Saint Yon, were recognised at the Executive Director's VET Awards held at Southern

Cross at Burwood.

The following students were nominated and were presented with a certificate as the best

performing student in their particular training package (subject) at Saint Yon: Abraham Magsino,

Electrotechnology, a student attending Saint Yon from Holy Spirit Catholic College Lakemba, Leon

Nigro, Construction, Casimir Catholic College. Jarod Ashby, Automotive SBAT, Marist College

Kogarah. Unfortunately Leon Nigro was unable to attend the ceremony.

Last night at Bankstown Girls High School, the Padstow Rotary Club held the inaugural

2019 Rotary Youth Awards Evening inviting over 15 local schools. I am delighted to announce

that two of our Lasallian Year 12 students received these special Vocation and Education (VET) awards. Bill Hanna received the

Rotary Youth Vocational Awards for VET Electrotechnology and Nabieh El-Tahan for VET Construction for outstanding effort for their

workplacement and academic efforts in their VET courses.

Parents, students and teachers were treated to sumptuous canapés prepared by the

Bankstown Girls High VET Hospitality students and guests experienced an Aboriginal

Welcome Smoking Ceremony on entering the auditorium. A local Aboriginal elder provided

a Welcome to Country and entertained the guests with Didgeridoo playing. During the

evening talented students performed piano recitals, guitar and band recitals.

The evening was enjoyed by the Saint Yon Trade Training VET teachers Mrs Phillips

(Head of Trade Training) and Mrs Pegum (VET Pathway Planner) and the El-Tahan and

Hanna families who were very proud of the students achievements. We congratulate Bill

Hanna and Nabieh El-Tahan’s for their awards and for representing their school admirably.

VET PATHWAY PLANNER: Mrs Nicola Pegum

Year 11 Auto students, Mario Alves and Nathan Dat Nguyen represented the College at Sydney Catholic Colleges World Skills last

Friday. Both students excelled throughout the rigorous testing schedule conducted at the St Joseph’s Trade Skills Centre,

Hinchinbrook.

The competing students ventured from their home colleges at Burwood, Pagewood and Hinchinbrook to attend the competition.

After five hours of strenuous challenges including

electrical fault finding, tappet setting, marking out

and measuring gaskets and brake inspections,

Mario Alves was placed second overall.

Congratulations to Mario for an outstanding effort

and we wish him well as he, next represents the

College at TAFE NSW for the State World Skills

EXTENSION 2 MATH EXCURSION AT NOTRE DAME UNIVERSITY, BROADWAY.

On Thursday 29 August, the Year 12 Mathematics Extension 2 students (Tony Do, Anthony Jaajaa, Martin Pham and Collin Phan)

attended the Extension 2 Student Day at the University of Notre Dame in Broadway. Alongside with Math Extension 2 students

across the Sydney Catholic Schools Archdiocese, we had the opportunity to further learn Mechanics and Harder Extension 1 topics in

detail.

The brilliant lectures were extremely helpful to us to prepare for our upcoming HSC exam. We were surrounded by highly

experienced mathematics professors and by the diverse minds of the other Extension 2 students in the diocese. Being able to meet

and interact with people involved in the same course allowed us to form new relationships and grow our understanding and passion

for mathematics. We thank all of the staff who assisted us and organised the event, particularly Mrs Bishop and Mr Bem who gave us

the opportunity to attend. Tony Do, Anthony Jaajaa, Martin Pham & Collin Phan

YEAR 12 INCURSION: PAUL WADE’S PRESENTATION

On Tuesday, 2nd July, Year 12 were given a memorable speech from a former Socceroos Captain, Paul Wade. Wade's highly amusing

presentation related his own footballing and life experiences to our current situation,

teaching us valuable lessons of hard work, friendship, and contentment.

Each of the students were awestruck when Wade revealed a match-worn jersey of Diego

Maradona, which he swapped his own jersey for, after a game in 1993. Wade’s story was

told through the jerseys and highlights of his career, as he took us all on his journey of

victories and defeats, in football and in life. We would like to thank Mrs Azize for

providing the year group with the opportunity to receive this wisdom and motivation

through such a captivating presentation. Anthony Jaajaa

YEAR 10 FOOD TECHNOLOGY

The Year 10 cake task has proved to be an excellent tool for students to showcase not only their creativity, but also the skills they

have developed over the last two years. This task involves students designing and producing a celebration cake. Over the past few

weeks 38 students have completed this task. This is a small sample of some of the cakes. Well done Year 10 Food Technology, 2019.

NSW STATE CONFERENCE FOR LAB TECHNICIANS - Mrs Margaret Croucher

On Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th September, I attended the NSW State Conference

for Lab Technicians that was held at the University of Technology Sydney. There

were many great workshops on offer and science suppliers showing their wares. I

have brought back some new resources for our department.

The highlight of the 2 days was the Keynote speaker, Dr Alice Gorman – Space

Archaeologist, from Flinders University in Adelaide. Her presentation was very

informative, entertaining and inspirational. She has just published her first book

“Dr Space Junk vs The Universe: Archaeology and the future" so I’m looking

forward to a good read.

Dr Alice can be found on Twitter @drspacejunk

Did you know - Elon Musk launched a red Tesla sports car in 2018 and it is still cruising around our solar system on an elliptical path

around the Sun.

YEAR 9 PASS STUDENTS - NSW CRICKET GALA DAY

A group of Year 9 PASS students had an enjoyable experience at the NSW Cricket Gala Day held at Graf Park on Monday 2nd

September. We were instructed by Mrs Turiano that we will be umpires throughout the day. We umpired 4 primary schools on the

day: Georges Hall Public, Yagoona Public, Christ the King and Al Kahima.

The students who participated were amazing and were really committed and participated in every game to the best of their

ability. The coaches from Sydney Thunders were helpful and made the day an eventful experience. It was definitely a great day

working with these schools and helping them get active. Joy Mensah
