To my fellow ASAP members,
For 2013, we have chosen the theme “ASAP: STEP UP!” because we can no longer take things sitting down. These are extraordinary times that call for extraordinary action. If we keep on doing the same things, by law of diminishing returns, we will just find our efforts becoming less and less effective through time. We need to be more creative, more innovative, more relevant.
We have to level up. That means, we should aim for a delivery of products and performance of our services in a way better than before, no less than excellently. That way, we get to be appreciated as more than just being an item provider. We get to be seen in a better light – a partner providing value that will be appreciated by our clients.
This will lead us to the next STEP: Strength Through Excellent Partnerships. Throughout the year, through our select projects – independent initiatives and collaborations – we bolster our ASAP power by harnessing our talents and resources on opportunities to be explored with colleagues, clients, associations and other institutions.
The playing field has changed and keeps on evolving with certain uncertainty; I enjoin everyone to contribute to our association in ways you can, so that we can act swiftly, dynamically and effectively, for a prolific 2013.
Vince S. ReyesASAP 2013 Chairman
Truly yours,
Step up and thump the yard.
ASAP 2013Chairman's Message
PROfileMADONNATARRAYOPRESIDENT/GROUP COO
In a long distinguished career in the production and entertainment business, Madonna Tarrayo has steadily risen up the ranks, all the way to her current postion as the President and Group COO of Unitel Productions and Straight Shooters. She has evolved to become a pillar of the industry, a distinction she now lives up to in her designation as the Vice President for External of the Advertising Suppliers Association of the Philippines and Director of the Advertising Board of the Philippines..
Getting her start as a writer for PTV 4, she then moved to Unitel Productions. Coming in as a Production Manager, she was promoted to Executive Producer and then to Client Services Head. After 12 years at Unitel, she took her talents to Straight Shooters as their General Manager.
Among the tasks she faces everyday include managing operations of all departments of both Unitel and Straight Shooters, scouting for new business and representing both companies in all negotiations, presentations and industry functions. Under Unitel's drive to
produce a number motion pictures per year, Madonna served as one of the producers of the APO Hiking Society-inspired musical entitled “I Do Bidoo Bidoo” written and directed by Chris Martinez. She will wear her producer hat again for Unitel's and Studio 5’s 2012 entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival, “Mga Kwento Ni Lola Basyang”.
Her strong leadership is anchored around a multitude of skills she has tirelessly developed such as clear communication, fair negotiation, selfless mentoring, sharp decision-making and meaningful interpersonal relations. A self-confessed multi-tasker, she is very hands-on with her approach,
willing to contribute in the creative strategy development, real time problem solving all the way to implementation. All of these can be attested to by the people she has mentored, trained and helped - all of whom are now successful in their respective fields.
With the Commercial Production Houses Group (CPHG) returning to the scene, Madonna adds another responsibility to her full sked. It's another mountain to climb for Madonna, who has made a career of scaling great heights time and time again.

Last January 15, 2013, Circuit Makati was born. Located at Sta. Ana, it was once dubbed as the Cabaret hub and the premier horse race track in the Philippines.
CIRCUIT MAKATI LAUNCH: AN ASAP COLLABORATION
Circuit Makati will become the first and only large-scale urban-district development in the country to host three district entertainment venues. This involves the Circuit Theatre, an indoor theater; the Central Walkway, an interactive walk that crosses that entire length of the district; and the Circuit Events Ground, which will host street plays, festivals, fashion shows and outdoor exhibit events. The development will also include a football field, skating park, shops and offices.
“Circuit Makati is Ayala Land’s 21-hectare integrated, mixed-use development anchored on entertainment experiences that brings together Ayala Land’s various product lines,” says Tony Aquino of Ayala Land, Inc. “In five years’ time, it will rise as a dynamic urban hub seamlessly complementing the distinct taste for living, leisure and lifestyle of today’s modern urbanites.”
In order to launch such a venue, ASAP event sector member Stages Production Specialists through Alvin Trono (Executive Producer) and George de Jesus III (Director / Scriptwriter) was tapped to handle the overall concept and execution of presenting all the possibilities that Circuit can offer. In tandem with another ASAP event sector member Ideashop Manila through Patrick Estella (Ceremonial Reveal), who has also long serviced Ayala Land, a wondrous collaboration began, combining each of their expertise for the event.
ASAP President and Noisy Neighbors’ Roy del Valle added his artistry as live musical director / arranger with technical services and venue members’ RSL, Imatech, Dragon Fireworks and Confetti Effects to complete the team in making the event a huge success.
Artists who were involved in making Circuit Makati “a place where something amazing is always going on” include Stages artists’ Christian Bautista & Karylle, Zia Quizon, ASAP talent sector member Ideal People Management’s female models for designers Jojie Lloren, Dong Omaga-Diaz and Ivarluski Aseron’s haute couture creations, The Azcals, some of Philippine musical theater finest actors, the Jabbawockeez, Filipino-American Disney star Anna Maria Perez de Tagle, and Mr. Leo Valdez.

SOUNDESIGN Bags Top Prize at Adobo Creative Rankings
One of the country’s premier audio production houses, SOUNDESIGN tops its category in the adobo magazine creative rankings, winning Top Sound Production House for 2011.
“The adobo creative rankings takes into consideration how an ad agency, individual or production house are born, we count the scores of all the awards they’ve won in the international, regional and local scores,” says Angel Guerrero, adobo magazine editor-in-chief. External auditor Punongbayan and Araullo was behind the meticulous tally. Adobo magazine ranks the industry’s best creative outputs yearly.
Scores were tallied based on wins from global and local creative competitions including the Cannes Lions, the London-based D&AD Awards and the London International, the US-based Clio Awards, the One Show and the New York Festivals. From the region, adobo magazine also included the Asia Pacific AdFest and Spikes Asia, and from the Philippines, the AdBoard Recognition Awards (ARAW) and the Creative Guild’s Kidlat Awards.
The win makes SOUNDESIGN the choice of agencies that produce award-winning work.
Asked if he expected to be No. 1 in a creative ranking in the country’s premier advertising magazine, SOUNDESIGN’s Raul Blay calmly says, “No, I never expected this. But when we got invited to the magazine’s photoshoot, we were told we made a strong showing in the creative rankings.
SOUNDESIGN, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary, has had its share of wins, a healthy number of Agency of the Year awards (AOY) for Audio Production House are on display in its studios. Winning the top spot in a creative competition surely is as sweet. Nonetheless, SOUNDESIGN’s president feels no pressure with the win.
“We always do our best in anything that we do.
There is no pressure, because the level of our passion is always there, whether we win or not. What is important is, when we submit our creative output, we did everything humanly possible to make it the best we can,” Blay explains.
For Blay, the creative win is recognition of the team’s hard work. “Our objective is to help propel the business of our clients. Winning awards is a bonus. That’s a different perspective,” he adds.
At the Opus last Tuesday, it was a very happy night for Blay and the team. Until the point when it was announced, no one thought they would bag the top prize. “The happiest point for me was seeing the faces of our team, full of pride.
The team is the most important thing. The team is my first client,” he says.
“Whenever we didn’t win, we always told ourselves there’s always something better in store for us. We believe our Creator is our chairman of the board, the man in charge, and he promises the best for our trust and faith. What is important is we give our best in anything that we do,” he states.
For SOUNDESIGN’s main man, being No. 1 means many things. “Being No. 1 is not in being big, not in billing, or number of projects. When we do the No. 1 sign, it is pointing upward to mean that with Him, everything is possible,” Blay shares, solemnly.

SOUNDESIGN’s OS1 - The country’s first recording studio on wheels
It is a husband and wife tandem behind the wheel, but SounDesign is far from your regular mom and pop enterprise. For its 15th
anniversary, this audio recording unit is redefining its craft.
At the anniversary event Blay and company revealed its latest baby, the On-Site 1. Nicknamed OS1, it is the country’s first fully equipped recording studio on wheels. Designed especially to service the needs of clients in remote locations, and accommodate tight talent schedules, SounDesign’s OS1 can easily record, and produce an ad on the spot, at any site.
“OS1 is bringing the recording service anywhere on land. That’s the type of service that feels the need,” says Blay.
It took a year of planning, experimentation, and constant redesigning to create OS1. Its creation is a collaborative effort with his team whose insights and expertise in technical details were critical. But, what a pay off, as people who have seen and experienced OS1 are simply marvelling at it.
“We’ve tried this already with a couple of projects, and a couple of client celebrities have recorded in it. The first project that we did, was successful, it got great reviews. From the same group, we got another project,” Blay adds.
For Sunlife anniversary short film series in 2012, where SOUNDESIGN produced the soundtrack to two films, actress Angel Aquino was the first to test OS1, the first to experience the plush seat in the spacious booth. Young director Nicolo Reyes, son of veteran Jun Reyes, so impressed with OS1, simply called it ‘talino’ (brilliant).
“We think we did well because we were recommended for another project. It means a lot to us that the client is staking their name on the OS1 service, and recommending its use,” shares Blay.
With its glowing reviews, its creators consider OS1 still a work in progress, and want to remain low-key. Audio engineer, Mark Vina, one of its creators says, “It’s a gut feeling, but I believe OS1 is just the first of many.”
“We’ve shown the clients OS1. I don’t know if we’re launching it formally. It will have to be word-of-mouth. We will rely on recommendations from those that have used it,” shares Blay.
Fortuitously timed with its 15th anniversary, SounDesign was named Top Sound Production House for 2011 at the adobo magazine creative rankings last year. The adobo creative rankings is based on scores of all the awards won in the international, regional and local events.
For Blay, the creative win is recognition of the team’s hard work. “Our objective is to help propel the business of our clients. Winning awards is a bonus. Whenever we didn’t win, we always told ourselves there’s always something better in store for us. What is important is we give our best in anything that we do,” shares Blay.

Pronounce it and you cannot help but smile. Yes, there is some naughtiness that jumps on your mind and seeps to your nerves – a titillating experience.
Hotter than the Real Dealby Orly Ballesteros
Last year, we at ASAP were titillated to launch a new baby of the industry. We named it Advertising and Event Suppliers Conference and Expo (AESCEX). The objective of the event was to be a platform where clients and suppliers can educate and share the best practices in the industry. This objective was evident in the actual day of the event. First, our keynote speaker Ms. Blen Fernando, VP for Marketing, Alaska Milk Corporation gave a powerful message on how clients and service providers should work as partners.
She also mentioned Simon Sinek and his Golden Circle. A lot of audience took note of this. Everybody was energized by her speech. This started the good vibes that you can feel inside the event.
Her message was about partnership growing beyond transactions. All of us in the conference strongly agreed with this. Since last year, ASAP’s battle cry has been about providing value.
All our speakers, most especially those with clients and supplier presentations were terrific. All of the audience felt the chemistry of these partnerships from the speaker representatives of Nestle and San Miguel Corporation and their trusted partner-suppliers.
In the afternoon, the second part of the event was a partnership event between Advertising Foundation, headed by the hardworking Ms.Linda Gamboa. This session was attended by advertising and public relations students from different universities.
The afternoon audience enjoyed the very informative speakers like Mr. Angel Bunag, Chairman of Ad Designs, Inc.; Margot Torres, VP for Marketing, McDonalds Philippines; Jos Ortega, Chairman and CEO, Havas Media Ortega; Efren Penaflorida, CNN Hero 2009, Linda Gamboa, Executive Director, Ad Foundation; and Ruperto Nicdao, President, Manila Broadcasting Company. If there is one word to describe AESCEX it will be hot. Hot in the sense that if you are one of the attendees, you will feel the intimate and passionate discussions of relevant topics about the industry. There were also inspiring moments coming from different speakers. Inspirations that wanted you to take action to be better in the craft that you are doing. It is that energy that whisper to your soul to become extraordinary not just be ordinary.Indeed, AESCEX is a platform where thought leaders of the industry share, inspire and provoke actions from the audience.Besides the learning activity, the attendees and walk-in visitors were given opportunities to do business in the trade exhibit. There were around 20 plus exhibitors and sponsors that supported the event.
New and effective technologies and services were the highlights of the trade exhibit. In the end of the event, most of the audience won cool prizes and loot bags. The event produced happy faces and positive feedback (you can read the survey results, they are amazing).
So what now after last year’s success of AESCEX?
Only one thing, the BEST IS YET TO COME!

Last year, the event sector of the Advertising Suppliers Association of the Philippines agreed to implement this 2013 the Intellectual Property Rights Cover Page.
This cover page is a milestone. This simple but meaningful cover page informs the clients that all materials presented by ASAP members are their properties and may not, except with our expressed written permission, distribute or commercially exploit the content. Nor may you transmit it or store it in any other physical form or in other forms of electronic retrieval systems.
The Philippines Intellectual Property Code is one of the best laws in Asia. In fact, in one of the forums I have attended, it was revealed that some countries use our law as a benchmark in crafting and improving their own Intellectual Property Code.
Since ASAP members are some of the best producers of creative concepts, the members are also the first to experience violation of their intellectual property rights.
In order to minimize and improve this situation, the Intellectual Property Rights Cover Page will be a standard staple in all presentations of ASAP members.
The Intellectual Property Rights Cover is hoped to act as one of the powerful means to educate and inform clients of the intellectual property rights of their partner suppliers. It is hoped that by including this cover page in presentations to all bidding materials of ASAP members, violations committed by clients knowingly and unknowingly on this particular critical area will be lessened, or at best eliminated.
One Step to a Better Intellectual Property Rights Protectionby Orly Ballesteros
The Philippines is a nation of creative people. All over the world, we are recognized and tapped for our creativity. This gift must be protected and respected; most especially, inside our country and in our industry.
There are two theories that come along with this action of ASAP in implementing the Intellectual Property Rights Cover Page. One is the “Broken Windows Theory” – this theory is popular in New York under Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
During Mayor Giuliani’s term, they found out that by repairing and preventing people in the ghetto in breaking the glass of windows in their community, they were able to eliminate crimes in that particular area. In addition, when the safety and security condition of that particular ghetto (a place where the highest number of crimes was recorded) improved, the nearby areas safety and security conditions also improved.
This leads me to my second theory the “Butterfly Effect” which means that a butterfly that flaps its wings can alter the direction of the wind and can even cause a major storm in another part of the world.
The second theory is akin to a ripple effect. The ASAP Intellectual Property Rights Cover Page, if whole heartedly practiced by the members, can create a healthy condition for our concepts, ideas and other things related to the creative process; and be given importance to and respected by our clients.
We can even be the best case study on how Intellectual Property Rights are valued, but this is getting ahead of myself and the challenges our sector and ASAP members face in realizing this critical goal.
