Christie: Employers will get tax relief. Story, 5A

EWING - Gov. Chris Christie seems to be warmingup to the idea of being presumptive Republican presi-dential nominee Donald Trump’s running mate.

After announcing a business tax relief program atthe headquarters of the insurer New Jersey Manufac-turers Wednesday, Christie noted that Trump is “a verypersuasive guy,” should he be asked to run with Trumpas vice president.

The comment came a day after Trump said he's nar-rowed his list of potential running mates to "five or sixpeople" and said he has not ruled out Christie.

Trump would not reveal the full list, but said his deci-sion this week to appoint Christie to head his WhiteHouse transition team did not mean the New Jerseygovernor was out of consideration.

JACKSON - Steps to discourage a Lakewood-basedneighborhood watch group from operating in this townis strictly a public safety decision and doesn’t reflectany animus toward the group, according to the Jack-son council president.

The Council passed a resolution Tuesday that pro-hibits the police department from associating with“any” neighborhood watch group outside of Jackson.Council President Rob Nixon said the action was large-ly a response to complaints over the Lakewood CivilianSafety Watch, a nonprofit group registered with the In-ternal Revenue Service as Lakewood Shomrim Inc.

Shomrin is Hebrew for “watchers.”Nixon said the action was driven by residents’ com-

plaints that the group had conducted patrols in Jack-son. He said he’s personally seen the watch group di-rect traffic on Jackson roads and received reports thatthe group arrives at first aid and fire scenes beforeEMTs and firefighters.

He doesn’t see their punctuality as a positive, eventhough the group receives annual training from theLakewood Police Department.

“This is not an anti-anybody move,” Nixon said.“This is to establish a public safety policy in our town
