May at Hebron this year means remembering the As-

cension of the Lord, recognition of high school seniors

who will be graduating, and the Relay for Life Lunch-

eon to fight cancer, sponsored by the Beverley Manor

Relay for Life Team.

There are seven Sundays in the Easter season on the

Christian Calendar, which puts Easter Sunday itself in

the middle of 13 weeks: first come six Sundays during

Lent; then Easter Sunday itself; and then six additional

Sundays in the Easter season.

Easter as a season lasts until Pentecost, which is 50

days after Easter. (The word pentecost means 50th.)

The Day of Ascension is observed 40 days after East-

er. Scripture tells us that the risen Jesus appeared to his

disciples for a period of 40 days, proving his resurrec-

tion and giving them final teachings. On the last day, he

ascended into heaven; that is what the Day of Ascen-

sion of the Lord recognizes. Since it is 40 days after

Easter (which is always a Sunday), the Day of Ascen-

sion is always on a Thursday; this year it is May 25.

Hebron will have four high school graduates this

year: Anna Cahill, Brock Moore, Dalton Moyer, and

Parker Turnage. They will be recognized in morning

worship on May 21, with Anna Cahill to speak.

The Relay for Life Luncheon will also be held on

May 21. The Beverley Manor Relay for Life Team in-

cluding many members of Hebron and of the Beverley

Manor Ruritan Club, as well as faculty and staff from

the Beverley Manor schools, will prepare and serve a

full meal in the Fellowship Hall. The cost of the meal is

a freewill offering. Hebron has always contributed gen-

erously to this important community fundraiser, and

everyone is invited to participate again this year.

Lemonade on the Lawn following Worship

Lemonade on the Lawn Starts June 4 Lemonade on the Lawn, Hebron’s popular summer-

time fellowship event following Sunday morning wor-

ship, will begin on June 4 this year.

A sign-up sheet will be posted on the bulletin board

outside the church office. This year, in the event that no

one has signed up to provide refreshments, Lemonade

on the Lawn will not be held on that Sunday, so please

help out by signing up.

Relay For Life Luncheon May 21 The Beverley Manor Relay for Life Team will hold a

Relay for Life Luncheon at Hebron on Sunday, May

21, following morning worship.

The luncheon raises money for the fight against can-

cer. Hebron has responded well in supporting this event

in the past, and everyone is invited to attend this year.

Summer Hours Begin June 4 Beginning Sunday, June 4, Hebron Presbyterian

Church will begin following its regular summer wor-ship schedule for June, July, and August.

Changes for the summer schedule are:

Morning worship is at 10:00 a.m., not 11:00.

Sunday School is at 9:00 a.m., not 9:55.

The Session of Hebron Presbyterian Church held its stated monthly meeting on Thursday, March 23. Minutes of the meeting were approved at the April 27 Session meeting and are printed here:

Present: Elders Mike Fallin, David Obenschain, Anita Tuttle, Robert Christian, Mike Ruleman, Hannah Bush, Tracy Mayer, Moderator Rev. Frank Wyche, and Clerk of Session Robin Moyer. Excused: Elders Martha Sieck, Nancy K. Cook, Lori Malcolm, and Allen Mar-tin. Absent: Elder Scott Martin.

A quorum being present, the Moderator opened the meeting at 7:04 p.m. with prayer and devotions from Mark 10:17-18 and John 13:34-35.

Clerk’s Report: Session approved minutes of the Stated Meeting on February 23, 2017, and the Annual Congregational Meeting on February 26, 2017. A re-quest from Rodney Bowers on behalf of the Church-ville little league baseball teams to use the Hebron ball-field for practices this spring and summer was ap-proved, with the field not to be used on Sundays. Ses-sion approved removal of Aileen “Buddy” Wright and Amelia Mader from the church roll following their deaths, February 24 and March 11, 2017. Mike Ruleman gave an update on 4-H Club use of the Fel-lowship Hall which has been previously approved by Session.

Treasurer’s Report: A handout was provided by Treasurer Michael Ruleman with a detailed Report of Fund Balances as of March 23, 2017. The general fund continues in the red at (-$43,499.84). The total in our checking and savings stands at $95,609.28.

Presbytery Matters: Minutes of the called meeting of Saturday, March 4, at Massanutten PC in Penn Laird, VA to consider calling an Associate General Presbyter are online at http://shenpres.org/meeting-docusments/ and a flyer is posted on the church bulletin board about the Rev. Nancy Meehan Yao, who was called and installed at the meeting.

Committee Reports Property (Hannah Bush, Robert Christian, Allen Mar-

tin, Anita Tuttle): Did not meet; next meeting in April. Stewardship/Finance: (Hannah Bush, Allen Martin,

Mike Ruleman): Did not meet. Worship (Nancy K. Cook, David Obenschain, Tracy

Mayer): Next Communion is Easter Sunday, April 16. The Sanctuary will be open for personal prayer and re-flection on the morning of Good Friday, April 14, and a Good Friday worship service will be held at 7:00 p.m. An Easter Sunday Church Breakfast will be at 9:00 a.m. on April 16.

Cemetery (Anita Tuttle): No report. Christian Ed (Scott Martin, Mike Ruleman): The an-

nual Easter Egg Hunt, including activities and lunch,

will be held Saturday, April 15 at 10:00 a.m. Commitment/Witness (Mike Fallin, Martha Sieck):

Congregational Ministries (Lori Malcolm, Martha Sieck): Contacts and visits are ongoing.

Personnel (Mike Fallin, David Obenschain): Hannah reported that she found that not all Memorial letters had been mailed to donors and families over the past sever-al years. She is working on correcting this, and the rest of the letters will be mailed soon.

Pastor’s Report: The Pastor said he has been very tired and worn out since having been diagnosed with influenza last month, and was out of the office one day this week picking up his wife who has been helping with his mother after having hip replacement surgery, so the April newsletter will not be available for pickup until April 2. His illness put him far behind in conduct-ing home communions. Friday morning Bible Study continues on Isaiah’s Servant Songs. The Pastor thanks everyone for their prayers and concerns regarding his mother’s hip replacement surgery March 14. She is do-ing well and continues to recover. Lenten devotionals were provided for the congregation, and a Good Friday service will be held.

The Next Stated Meeting will be April 27, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. in Session Room due to the Fellowship Hall being used for the PW Yard Sale.

The blessings and prayer concerns of the congrega-tion, friends, and relatives were shared by Session for corporate and individual prayer. The meeting was ad-journed with prayer by the moderator at 8:25 p.m.

Choral Society Concert Is May 21 “The Staunton Choral Society will hold its Spring

Concert on Sunday, My 21, at 4:00 p.m. at Christ Lu-theran Church, 2807 N. Augusta St. in Staunton. It will also feature the Verona UMC Children’s Choir and the Xpressions Dancers. The concert is free (but freewill offering accepted) and the public is invited to attend.
