Our SchoolOur SchoolOur SchoolOur School The Ascension Lutheran Church Nursery School program provides a nurturing environment addressing the needs of the total child. The recently renovated school offers bright, large, and open class rooms. The playground is fully equipped with age appropriate climbing equipment, tricycles and a roomy sandbox. Through developmentally appropri-ate teaching strategies, our instruc-tional program offers age appropri-ate learning experiences that encour-age social, emotional, spiritual, and academic growth. Our educational programs are MSDE (Maryland State Department of Education) approved for ages 2 through 4. We strive to establish a framework for further educational success by encouraging creativity, building posi-tive self-images, and fostering a love of learning.

In order to promote individualized attention for each student, our class sizes are limited, and each class is staffed with a lead teacher and an assistant teacher. Students also receive specialized instruction from our school music teacher and a science/art teacher who works with the 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds. Our lead teachers are highly quali-fied college graduates, and our assistant teach-ers have completed Early Childhood Education course work. Our teachers are kept cur-rent with CPR and First Aid accreditation. Teachers are also required to attend Early Childhood Workshops each year. Following are maximum class sizes by age group: • 2-year-old classes: 12 students • 3-year-old classes: 16 students • 4-year-old classes: 20 students

LEARN.

Our students are exposed to a broad variety of learning experi-ences during the school day. Regular activities include time for free play, pre-reading and pre-math skills, art, literary enrich-ment activities, fine motor and gross motor activities, develop-ment of social skills and a daily snack. Threes and Fours classes partake in Science/Art and Music specials. The school often arranges for in-house programs presented by community resources, such as visits from children’s authors, fire fighters, and puppeteers. The 4-year-old classes participate in popular field trips, such as concerts, dramatic productions, a visit to a farm, and a hike at a nature center. We encourage parental involvement in the classroom through visits, parent-teacher conferences, holiday and birthday parties, and field trips. An annual highlight for the 4-year-old classes is the students’ preparation for special events for Dads and Moms in the spring
