Meet just a few of Ascensus’ instructors.

Paul KernPaul Kern is responsible for conducting IRA training programs to meet the needs ofcredit unions and leagues nationwide. He develops, designs, and implements anumber of products, including custom in-house seminars associated withimplementation projects.

Chad NeumannChad Neumann is the project manager for IRA Supertrain®. He is responsible for theevaluation, analysis, design, development, and delivery of IRA Supertrain each year.He also participates on numerous project teams including those that propose formsrevisions and IRAdirect® changes.

Deborah ShipmanDebbie Shipman is the project manager for Ascensus’ credit union IRA workshoptours and in-house training programs, as well as the Ascensus Trainer Toolkit. Herresponsibilities include the analysis, design, development, implementation, andevaluation of these curriculums.

Ben MaasBen Maas is the project manager for IRA University and internal training. He isresponsible for implementing new employee and ongoing training for Ascensus’ IRAServices staff.

Attaining the Certified IRA Specialist (CIS) and Certified IRA Professional (CIP)designations will not only help fulfill your career, but give your credit union’s IRAowners the peace of mind that comes from working with a professional IRArepresentative.

Achieve IRA certification through four defined skill levels.

CIS Associate

CIS Expert

CIP CIS Leadership

Certified IRA Specialist Associate –This level of certification demonstratesproficiency in completing basic IRAtransactions. Topics include openingIRAs, contribution rules, distributionrules, federal tax withholding, and basicIRA tax reporting.

Certified IRA Specialist Expert – Thislevel of certification demonstratesexpertise in a variety of advanced IRAtransactions, including excesscontributions, recharacterizations,rollovers and transfers, requiredminimum distributions, conversions,death claim processes, and withholding.

Certified IRA Specialist Leadership –This level of certification demonstratesexpertise in a broad range of IRAtransactions and competence in leadingan IRA program. Topics include creditunion liabilities, staff development,required minimum distributions, deathbenefits, and withholding.

Certified IRA Professional – ThisNAFCU-endorsed certification recognizesa standard of knowledge for operationstransaction processing. It also enablesclients to easily identify skilled,knowledgeable IRA professionals. Topics include IRA documentation andmaintenance requirements, IRA eligibilityand contribution rules, retirement planportability, IRA distribution requirements,IRA fees and investments, SEP andSIMPLE IRA plans, and retirementplanning.

Obtaining CertificationTo pursue the CIS certification you mustattend IRA Supertrain (enroll in thelearning track that matches your currentlevel of expertise and desiredcertification level). After attending IRASupertrain, you will complete an onlinewritten exam and a verbal exam/project.To become certified, you must earn 80percent or above on both parts of theexam within 60 days of attending IRASupertrain.

To pursue the CIP certification you mustfirst have a minimum of two yearsexperience with an IRA program and/orhave achieved CIS certification at theexpert level. You then must pass the CIPwritten exam, which is offered severaltimes each year. To prepare for theexam, many individuals choose to attendIRA Institute (instructor-led or online).
