General information about CO2

Carbondioxideisthecombinationoftwoatomsofoxygenjoinedwithasingleatomofcarbon.ItschemicalformulaCO2,isalmostaswellknownasthatofwater,H2O,anditisfrequentlyreferredtobyitsformularatherthanitsname.

Innature’schainoflife,themutualdependenceofplantandanimallifeismaintainedthroughthelinkofcarbondioxide.Everytimewebreathewereleasethisgas,whichplantsneedforlife.Throughtheprocessofphotosynthesis,theplantsseparatethecarbonfromtheoxygen.Inturn,plantsreleasethepureoxygen,whichweneedtosurvive.Wereversetheprocess,andbycombiningtheoxygenwithcarbonfromthefoodsweeat,producecarbondioxideagain.

CO2isacolourless,inertgasapproximately1½timesheavierthanairand0.03%ispresentintheearth’satmos-phere.Itsmellsslightlypungent,hasasweetbitingtaste(sodawater)andishighlystable(difficulttoseparate).

Itisproducedinvaryingamountsbythecommonprocessofcombustionoffuelshighincarboncontent.Themostcommonsourceoffuelforcombustionisoilwhich,whenmixedwiththecorrectproportionofair,burnstoproducearound15%CO2inthefluegasesofaCO2plant.Aftercombustionhastakenplace,theCO2canbeseparatedfromthefluegasesand,throughasimpleprocess,madeavailableforthemanycommercialpurposestowhichitcanbeapplied.

CO2canexistinthreeforms:

-ingaseousform: forthebeverageandfoodindustries -inliquidform: inastoragetankunderpressure -insolidform: calleddryice(forcooling,blastingetc.)

GASEOUS CO2 canbeliquefiedunderpressureprovideditstempera-tureisbelow31°C,thistemperaturebeingreferredtoastheCRITICALPOINT.Ifcompressedandcooledbelowthecriticalpoint,acolourlessfluid,approximatelythesamedensityaswater,isproduced.

CO2willremainintheliquidformaslongasitstemperatureremainsbelowthecriticalpointbutwillreturntothegaseousstateifitstem-peraturerisesabovethispoint,regardlessofthepressureapplied.

HighpressureliquidCO2isproducedbycompressingthegaseousCO2inmultistagecompressorstopressuresintheneighbourhoodof69barpressure,thencoolingittoaround18°C.Itiscustomarilyfilledintospeciallyconstructedsteelcylinders.Likewater,liquidCO2canbeweighed,andthisisthenormalformofmeasuringit.

Low Pressure CO2

LowpressureliquidisanalternativemethodofstoringCO2andisproducedeitherbyexpandinghighpressureCO2toalowerpressureorbyrefrigeration.Itisheldinspeciallyconstructedstoragetanks,heavilyinsulatedandequip-pedwithrefrigerationunitstoholdtheinternaltankpressureatorbelow21barand-18°Ctemperature.Pressureswitchesareincorporatedtocontroltherefrigerationunitsandsafetymechanismandelectricalalarmsarefittedtoreleasethetankpressureandraiseanalarmintheeventofrefrigerationmalfunction.

LowpressureliquidCO2(sometimesreferredtoas“bulk”) istransportedtooneplacefromanotherininsulatedroadtankersortrailers(or,insomecountries,byrailtankwagons),theliquidbeingsimplytransferredfrommobiletostatictankbypumpingorgravityfeed.

Unlikewater,carbondioxidecannotexistintheopenairinliquidform.Itmustbeheldunderpressureorrefrigeration(oracombinationofboth)toremainintheliquidstate.

SOLID CO2 (customarily known as “DRY ICE”)DryIceistheproductofprocessingliquidCO2.IfthepressureofliquidCO2issuddenlyreleased,aproportionofthatliquidwillchangetothesolidstate(becomingdryice“snow”)andtheremainderwillreverttogas(revertgas).Whenthesnowiscompressedunderhydraulicormechanicalaction,blocksorpelletsofdryiceareformed.Therevertgas(gaseousCO2)canbereadilyreclaimedandconvertedbackto liquidbyrecompressionandreliquefaction,thencereturnedtothedryiceblockmachineorpelletizerforfurtherprocessing.

Thetemperatureofdryiceis-79°Candintheatmoshereitwillpassdirectlyfromthesolidtothegaseousstage,leavingnomoistureortraceofitspresenceexceptthecold.

CarbonDioxidehas3physicalstatesofgas,liquidandsolidwhichdependontemperatureandpressure.

Where does CO2 come from?

CO2isderivedfromanumberofsourcesincludingcombustionofcarbo-naceousfuels,fermentation,naturalwells,andasaby-productofindustrialprocessessuchasethyleneoxideandbioethanolproductionandammoniasynthesis.

CO2phasediagramThe Solid State (Dry Ice)

Belowthetriplepoint(5.18bar,-56.6°C)CO2canonlyappearinitssolidandgaseousstate.DryIceisthecommontradenameforsolidCO2.Atatmosphericpressureithasatemperatureofapprox.-79°C.ThesolidCO2changesdirectly into itsgaseousstate.Thisevaporation(sublimation)doesnot leaveanyresidues.Dry ice isnon-toxic,non-inflammable,inert,withoutsmellandbacteriostatic.Itiswhiteandhasadensityofapprox.1'500kg/m3initscompactstate.Dryiceisanidealrefrigerantwhichqualifiesespeciallywellforvariousapplications.Ithasahighcoolingcapacityandheattransferisveryhighwhenindirectcontactwiththecoldmaterial.

The Liquid State

Withinatemperaturerangebetween-56.6°Cand31°Candpressuregreaterthan5.2barandlessthan74barre-spectivelyCO2isinitsliquidstateexceptatveryhighpressures.Thismeansthat,below5.2bar,CO2existsonlyinitssolidorgaseousstate.At5.2barand-56.6°Callthreestates(solid,liquidandgas)arepresent.Thisiscalledthetriplepoint.

CO2gashasadensityofapprox.1.9kg/m3atatmosphericpressureand+15°C.CO2hasmanyuniqueandbene-ficialfeatureswhichmakeitvaluableinthepreservationofpackagedfood,inexplosionandfireprotection,inpestcontrolandasprotectivegasininert-gas-welding.InalltheseapplicationsitisimportantfortheCO2gastodriveoutandreplacetheatmosphericoxygen.Moreover,CO2gasisusedforenrichingtheatmosphereingreenhouses,instoringfruitsandvegetablesandforpHcontrolwhentreatingpotableandwastewater.

General Process Description

Fluegasfromboilerexhausts(beitexisting,neworevenpowergenerators)containcombustionproductslikeCO2,watervapor,N2,O2,CO,andpossiblySO2dependingonthefuelbeingused.Thisfluegas,undertheASCOSORBprocess,isfirstcooledandtreatedforSO2effectivelyrenderingafluegastoaproperoperatingtemperatureandreachinganacceptablelevelofSO2priortoenteringtheASCOSORBprocessofCO2gasextraction.

OncecooledandtreatedthefluegasenterstheCO2stackgasrecoverysys-temforextractionofCO2gasfromthefluegas,usingspeciallyformulatedASCOSORBabsorptionsolventcombinedwithprocesstowersandpackingforbestoverallefficiency.ThesetowersincludetheCO2gasabsorberandCO2stripper. CO2gasisgeneratedasaby-productofthealcoholic fermentation process (e.g. etha-noloperations,distilleries,wineries).ThistheniscollectivelyreclaimedfromthefermentationareathroughadequatelysizedcollectionpipelinesforcommonfeedtotheASCOCO2gasrecovery system. The gas at this point willbe at low pressure and combined purity of>98.5%.

CO2 gas can be generated as aby-product of various industrial sources(e.g.ammoniaproductionorhydrogenreforming)andassuchcan be reclaimed for feed to theASCOCO2gasrecoverysystem.

CO2 gas can be generated fromnatural origin (e.g. from naturalundergroundwells).Thesesourcegases then can be reclaimed forfeedtotheASCOCO2gasrecove-rysystem.

TherecoveryplantcompressesCO2gas,elevatingthepressuretoapproximately18barg.forCO2gasprocessingthatbeing:washing,purifying,dryingandCO2gascondensing.Ourselectionofspeciallydesignedcompressorsofferthebestinenergyutilization,drygascompressionandeaseofmaintenance.Oncecompressed,CO2gasistreatedforremovalofimpuritiestypicalofthesesourcesbyhighpressurehighefficiencyCO2gaswashing(scrubbing)providingaCO2purityofmin99.9%.ASCO’ssystemdesignfurtherenhancesthegasqualitybyproperCO2gaspurifying.Thisisaccomplishedbyanactiva-teddesiccantbedforgasdryingtoadewpointofminus40°Catpressure(-62°Catatmosphericpressure)followedbycarbonpolishfilter,againsubjecttorawgasandprocessconditions.Oncetheoperationiscompleted,thefinalgaswillbeodourfree,colourfreeandtastefree,preparingforthelaststagesofpurification.AsameansoffinalpurificationtheCO2gasiscondensed(separationofnon-condensablegases).CO2gascondensingisaccomplishedbyuseofanindependentrefrigerationsystemthatliquefiesCO2gasatapproximately18barg.andminus24°C.Thenon-condensablegasespresentintheCO2gasareseparatedandpurgedfromthesystemautomaticallyandreusedforregenerationgaswithintheplant.LiquidCO2leavingtheCO2condenserflowsbygravitytoaliquidCO2purificationsystemtoachieveafinalliquidCO2purityof99.998%.Thereafter,highqualityliquidCO2ispumpedtoaliquidCO2storagetankforhandlingtheliquidCO2suchasbulksupply,cylindersupply,dryicesupplyforchillingordryicesupplyforblastcleaning.
