Welcome Message

Dear Colleagues,

The Malaysian Orthopaedic Association (MOA) Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) is the largest gathering point for the Malaysian Orthopaedic fraternity. In 2019, the ASM gathered a record attendance of 1556 Orthopaedic surgeons, master trainees, medical doctors, house officers, research assistants, nurses, and allied health professionals. Apart from updating knowledge, it was an opportunity to reunite with friends and colleagues as well as catch up with the latest offerings in the industry. For the junior associates, it provided the chance to present your work in the meeting and to start connecting with leading figures in our field.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has shaken our world and as a result, the 2020 MOA ASM had to be rescheduled. Most importantly, the MOA has had to review how this meeting should be conducted.

In the interest of protecting the health, safety and well-being of our members, guests and industry partners, the MOA Council and ASM Organising Committee has decided to run the meeting virtually.

The 50th MOA ASM in conjunction with the 40th AOA Annual Congress will be held from 22nd to the 26th of June 2021, a five-days online event. This is the first time in our history that we will be attempting this, so we are indeed excited about it.

The scientific team have a stimulating scientific programme in the wings, with debates, discussions, contests, and virtual booths where you can ‘walk in’! The last day will be a physical meeting including the various awards ceremony and the MOA AGM.

By going virtual, we also warmly welcome the submission of abstracts from our ASEAN colleagues. All accepted abstracts will be presented either as an virtual oral or virtual e-poster presentation in the virtual meeting platform which will be made available for a whole year. More details will be made available in the website soon.

It is said that this pandemic has accelerated the way we adopt technology and digitalisation in our lives. Thus, we encourage our fellow colleagues to actively participate and embrace the new future of the MOA ASM.

Please do mark your calendar! Take care, stay safe.

152nd Announcement l Virtual Conference

This is an annual award for the best original scientific or clinical paper submitted by postgraduate Orthopaedic trainees in Malaysia. This work represents the research that was conducted during training, which is one of the requirements for the conferment of their degree. This award was initiated in 1997 by Dato’ Dr Mahmood Merican, whom the award is named after. He is a well-known Orthopaedician and a philantrophist who has contributed tremendously to the Orthopaedic community. The objective of the award is to encourage a high standard of research and scientific presentation among Orthopaedic trainees so they may become surgeons who can perform great surgery but are themselves thinkers who understand the importance of sound scientific work and its applicability in daily clinical practice.

This award has demonstrated good outcomes and each year the competition gets tougher. We wish all the applicants Good Luck!

The PrizeA cash prize of RM3,000.00 donated by Dato’ Dr Mahmood Merican.

Regulations1. The competition is open to all registered trainees in the

Masters of Orthopaedic Surgery programme in Malaysian universities and trainees who completed training in 2020 are also eligible.

2. The work may take the form of clinical trials, surveys, retrospective studies, laboratory experiments or any other form of original work.

3. In general, the research work must be derived from a thesis/dissertation completed during the time of training. Published work by a trainee can also be accepted provided they can show evidence that work was submitted as a requirement for the Masters of Orthopaedic surgery programme.

4. Applicants should not have submitted similar work in any other competition, including for this award previously. The research work must not have been presented in whole or in part in any form in other conferences, seminars, or official presentations.

practice. • The scientific merit of the research. • Sufficient introduction to justify clear research

question. • The appropriateness of the methodologies used. • The interpretation of results and conclusions. • Presentation skills. • Ability to answer questions from the judges.
