Myanmar is blessed with land andwater resources. Merchantile marine is verycommon these days in Myanmar’s waters.Nine main ports in Myanmar are handlingfreight.

Yangon Port is one of the mainseaports in Myanmar in the maritime tradesection. As there are large volumes offreight-handling at Yangon Port daily, theplan is being implemented to extend theport systematically.

Service capability of the ports is tobe improved with extension of the port yard, secure and smooth waterway into and out ofthe port for vessels and better port services. In extending the port services, emphasis isto be placed on prompt clearance ofcommodities from the port and systematicstorage of cargos. Moreover, priority is tobe given to durability of the ports andcleanliness of the port yard.

Fourth generation mobile phone technology wasintroduced in late 2009 in Stockholm and Oslo byoperators TeliaSonera and Ericsson. But its debuthas been partially hampered by the absence oftelephones compatible with the new standard, whichhas meant that the offer has been limited to Internetaccess.

Industry analysts have said the real breakthroughwas not likely until 2012-2013.

Food groups sue US for ethanolboost in gasoline

WASHINGTION, 10 Nov— Livestockproducers and food industry groupsfiled a suit on Tuesday seeking tooverturn a US decision to allow higherlevels of ethanol in gasoline, saying itcould push up food prices.

The Grocery ManufacturersAssociation, the National MeatAssociation and other groups suedthe Environmental Protect ionAgency, saying regulatorsoverstepped their authority when theyruled last month that gasoline retailerscould sell fuel containing up to 15percent ethanol. That is an increasefrom the current allowable level of 10percent.

The EPA ruled that cars built in2007 and later could burn the fuel, known as E15.

“This will put pressure on themeat and poultry supply, which willlead to higher food prices forconsumers,” J Patr ick Boyle, president of the American MeatInstitute, which is one of the groups, said in a release.

Ethanol is made mostly fromcorn in the United States.

Food groups say E15 wil lincrease both corn demand, and inturn, meat prices because livestockeat the grain. About a third of the UScorn crop is used to make ethanol.

Corn prices briefly hit more thana two-year high on Tuesday above 6US dollars a bushel on droughts inkey producing areas and after thegovernment cut its crop outputforecast. —MNA/Reuters

WASHINGTON, 10 Nov—Respiratory infectionssuch as influenza and other causes of pneumoniakill 4.25 million people every year, many of themyoung children, according to a report released onTuesday.

These infections account for 6 percent of alldeaths globally, the World Lung Foundation saidin releasing its Acute Respiratory Infections Atlas.

“We know that at least 4 million people diefrom acute respiratory infections, yet the globalhealth community does not even recognize them asa distinct disease group,” said Peter Baldini, chiefexecutive officer of the World Lung Foundation. The foundation hopes to convince governmentsand donors to look at respiratory deaths as a group.“With relatively modest resources, the means areavailable to save millions of lives. We simply needcommitment, sound policy, and strategicinvestment,” Baldini said in a statement.

The report, available at http://ARIAtlas.org,shows people in the world’s poorest countries arefar more likely to die from such infections. Thedeath rate from pneumonia is 215 times higher inlow-income countries than in high-incomecountries, for example. A virus called respiratorysyncytial virus, or RSV, is the most common sourceof severe respiratory illness in children, the surveyfound, killing at least 66,000 children a year andpossibly as many as 199,000. It found 3 millionRSV hospitalizations every year and 33 millioncases of RSV in 2005. — MNA/Reuters

LOS ANGELES, 10 Nov—Onceupon a Hollywood time, long beforeTwitter and Facebook became themissives of choice for many celebs, stars actually took pen in hand tocommunicate with the press includingthis reporter. Some even senttelegrams.

They may have been urged bystudio publicists. Or they may havejust figured that it was wise to get onthe best side of the media.

Whatever inspired them, I wasrecently reminded of this quaintpractice while sifting through someold office files. There, I discovered astack of letters from variouscelebrities I had covered over theyears.

There was no 140-character limitfor Bing Crosby, who wrote an eight-paragraph letter to me in 1972. Heended with the claim: “I’ve reached

Association’s entertainer of the year is the group’shighest honour, and voting for the trophy is conductedunder strict confidentiality.

But we were able to find a voter who didn’t thinkMiranda Lambert, who leads all CMA nominees withnine, was worthy of the top award.

Her name? Miranda Lambert. She had three chancesto vote for herself, and said she passed.

“I just feel like it’s such a big deal to be nominatedfor entertainer of the year,” Lambert said. “I’m kind ofweirded out that I got in there. Oh, I just can’t believeit. But I feel like when you actually win it, it’s somethingthat you really have to earn. I have done two headliningtours and they were both this year. You know, I feellike I still have a ways to go before I deserve to take thathome.”

Lambert’s not alone in her angst. The threemembers of Lady Antebellum — Hillary Scott, DaveHaywood and Charles Kelley also declared that theydid not vote for themselves. Scott called it “extremelypremature.”

Yet there they are, along with another newcomer,Zac Brown Band, former winner Keith Urban andBrad Paisley, probably the safest bet to win the CMA’smost coveted award Wednesday night in Nashville.

NE W YO R K, 10 N O V—WhenHollywood’s A-list stars gather for amovie premiere, it is always news, especially when the movie in questionis packed with top names. But at thepremiere of the new comedy “MorningGlory” held on Sunday, 7 Nov, at theZiegfeld Theater in New York, it washard to tell where the news left off andthe film began.

For “Morning Glory” is all about amorning news show, so it’s a film aboutnews making news. Think “GoodMorning America” or the “Today”show, except call it “Daybreak,” thenadd in Rachel McAdams starring as anup-and-coming young producer, andHarrison Ford and Diane Keaton as twowarring on-air news-casting veteransand you’ve got the basis of this romanticcomedy.

As McAdams told reporters at anearlier press conference, she discoveredthat getting into the spirit of hercharacter wasn’t much of a struggle.

“We were fortunate enough to beinvited into the control rooms of ‘GoodMorning America,’ and the ‘Today’show, and ‘The Early Show,’ and I justshadowed some executive producersthere,” she recalled.

Nokia takes backcontrol of

Symbian softwareHELSINKI, 10 Nov—Nokia Oyj will assume full

control of the Symbian operating system, retakingmanagement of a key asset which it had given tothe open source community to run only a few yearsago.

Nokia said on Monday it would take care ofSymbian platform development from April 2011onwards, while the cross-industry SymbianFoundation will in the future take care of onlylicensing of the software.

Nokia bought out other shareholders inSymbian in 2008 and opened the software for anymanufacturers to use for free on an open-sourcebasis. But it failed to win wide adoption and thisyear Samsung Electronics and Sony Ericssonabandoned it in favor of Google’s Android.

“As other licensees have abandoned Symbian,Nokia had little option but to take full control,”said Ben Wood, head of research at CCS Insight.
