On behalf of the local organising committee for the 2017 ASFBconference, I’d like towelcome you all to the beautiful coastal town ofAlbanyonthesouthcoastofWesternAustralia.SituatedontheedgeofPrincess Royal Harbour and walking distance from the historic towncentre, the Albany Entertainment Centre is a spectacular venue to hostthe first stand-aloneASFB conference since 2011. This has provided theorganising committee with an opportunity to develop an excitingconferenceprogramthatisalittlebit‘outoftheordinary’.With theoverarching themeof ‘TurningPoints inFishandFisheries’,wehope to get everyone thinking about all those influential moments ordevelopments,smallandbig,thathavechangedthewaywegoaboutourresearch. After a few years of working hard to get both marine andfreshwater contributions in asmany sessions as possible,we aremixing(orratherun-mixing)itupfortheSunday,whentwoconcurrentsessionswill focus specifically on marine habitat-based topics and freshwater-relatedissuesforthefullday.I wish to thank everyone formaking the effort to travel all the way toAlbany for this conference. With great pleasure I welcome you to the 2017 ASFB Conference inAlbany, Western Australia. Ahuge thanks to the Local OrganisingCommittee and Conference Chair Gary Jackson for assembling anoutstanding program around the theme of Turning Points in Fish andFisheries.We have three days of high quality presentations to showcase ourendeavours in fish and fisheries, which is sure to generate livelydiscussions andnetworkingopportunities for scientists andmanagers atall stagesof theircareers.Wehavealsostrivedtoengagewiththe localcommunity during this conference, through a partnershipwith the localhigh school, and a public forum on topics relevant to the coastalcommunitiesofsouthwestAustralia.After the success of the Women in Ichthyology forum at ASFB 2016Hobart,thisyearwekickoffwithafocusonearlycareerdevelopmentinfish and fisheries. TheNurturing Fish Scientists sessionwill take us on ajourney from the post-graduate (larval) phase to fully-recruitedichthyologists,withseveralspeakersandadiscussionforumallowingustoshareourexperiencesandtipsformakingthemostoftheformativeyearsin becoming a professional scientist or manager in this rewarding, buthighly competitive field.
