Dear Parishioners, Does this describe you? “All of us, gazing with unveiled face on the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, as from the Lord who is the Spirit.” (2 Cor 3, 18) Does this describe your life? If you think of yourself, here sitting in the pews, does this describe you or perhaps even better, do you realize that this can take place? “I am being TRANSFORMED into the same image from glory to glory … ” This is the kind of life that Jesus died to give to you and to me. He has broken the back of sin, selfishness, anger, jealousy, etc. and this is available to us. We must keep in mind, however, that this transformation does not necessarily happen in a day or a week or maybe even in a month, but when we live the Christian life we are transformed. Can these words of St. Paul resonate with you? When you began to pray a little bit more, when you began to confess a little bit more, when you began to direct your gaze upon the glory of God – were you transformed? And if so, as St. Peter says, “always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope.” Some of you may say, “You know I don’t experience that; I’m basically bored here and I get nothing out of the mass or this spiritual life thing.” (If that does not describe you, pass this over to the guy next to you who never reads these things – the one I am always picking on – and tell him the reason for your hope.) To you, I say, have great hope! You too can be transformed, but open your eyes, your ears, and silence your hearts, so you can begin to perceive the great work that the Lord wants to bring about in your life. There is a great a cloud of witnesses that surrounds you, so rid yourselves of every burden of sin that clings to you, and persevere in running the race that lies before us. With us, keep your eyes FIXED on Jesus!! (Heb 12,1-2) Does this stuff describe my life? Do I seek to bear witness to the fact that the long reign of sin has ended and in Jesus and a new age has dawned? (Cf., Preface IV, Easter) Do I come here with this firm vision of my life? Think, e.g., about your participation at mass and in the liturgy. The priest says: “the Lord be with you.” What kind of response does your voice pronounce? A mumbled, almost imperceptible, low-voiced: “uh huh, and with your spirit,” with the same level of interest as when we would say “yeah mom, I’ll clean up my room in a minute.” The priest then says, “lift up your hearts” and we respond with the words trailing off into near silence “we lift them up to the…” as if to say “do we have to?” The priest continues, “let us give thanks to the Lord our God!” Automatic-reply with a monotone voice, “it is right and just.” Then the priest begins the preface and the experience becomes like a Peanuts cartoon where the teacher is talking and only sounds heard are “Wah wah wah wah wah wah . . . ” Do you hear what the priest is saying?! “The Lord be with you!!! Lift up your hearts!!!!” Sursum Corda, which literally means hearts aloft – we are ushered up into the holy of holies, heaven. At this point in the mass we proclaim the Holy, Holy, Holy and the priest is saying: Brethren, we are in heaven now – because there is truly only one liturgy, which is heaven and the mass brings us there. We go with Jesus at this point in the mass, to the holy of holies, to worship the Father in spirit and in truth. So, when the priest says sursum corda (lift up your hearts), he is saying “we are in heaven now!!” How often do we simply reply mumbling, if at all? Oh, okay, “we lift them up to the Lord.” I have run out of room and will continue later, but let us acknowledge that there are some beautiful things said to us in sacred scripture, in the sacred liturgy and in the lives of those who are living witnesses of hope – did you know that all of this is available to you? And does this experience describe your life? If not, I invite you this upcoming lent to “Hang on to every Word!” God speaks to us; are we listening? Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us!

Discipline is Good for the Nerves
“Children don’t like discipline. But yes, they will like the peace that will come to them and their family in the
short term, and the quality that will develop in their character in the long term.
A parent who finally and firmly takes charge soothes a child’s soul. A grown-up is running the family, the way God intended it.
While kids initially may resist stronger discipline, with time they become more amenable to it. Both their demeanor and their mood settle. The explanation is pretty straightforward.
Weak discipline invites relentless challenge, causing ill will for all. Resolute discipline, on the other, lays down a stable line. When consequences are clear and sure, kids learn the terms. They
cease the battle, and accept what is. Put simply, better discipline makes for a better relationship.”

FAQ’s of Ash Wednesday
from www.catholic.org
Why do we put ash on our forehead? Ashes are applied to our forehead in the sign of the cross as the words, "Remember, you are dust and to dust you shall return" are spoken to us. The other formula which is used, "Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel" emphasizes our call to continual conversion and holiness of life. This act symbolizes our mortality as well as our need for ongoing repentance. It is a reminder that this life is short and merely a foreshadowing of what we shall become through the redemption of Jesus Christ on the cross. The work of our redemption will not be complete until we are raised from the dead, in resurrected bodies like His own and called to the eternal communion of heaven.
Where do the ashes come from? The ashes for Ash Wednesday normally are made from blessed palm branches from the previous Palm Sunday. The ashes are sprinkled with Holy Water and incensed before distribution. When do I wash the Ashes off my face? There is no specific instruction on how long ashes are to be worn. Many people choose to wear their ashes for the remainder of the day both as a reminder of their own mortality and as a witness before those around that they are a follower of Christ and are entering into a season of examination and abstinence.
