PASUMAI TRUST PROJECT BUILD- ANNUAL REPORT – May- 2017 to April- 2018 Introduction We are very happy to share our annual report for the year 2017 to 2018. We were also very happy for ASHA FOR EDUCATION supported our project again from long period gap. This have been helped our children of Migrant brick kiln workers for continue their study. In May 2017 field visit was conducted by two volunteers of Asha in our working areas in Kannadapalayam village, Thiruvallur district. Volunteers Mrs.Dhanalaxmi and Mrs. Saraswathy these two madams came and visited brick kiln area and met children and parents in these brick kilns. They were discussed with us about our project for educating eliminating child labour in brick kilns. From May onwards we started our project in the field. We were appointed three teachers (animator) namely 1.Sumithra, 2. Arokiyamary , 3. Dhanalaxmi. These teachers have very good experience with children and parents for fifteen years. Bridge school centre We were started one bridge school centre in rented place from the month of June -2017 in Kannadappalayam village near Puduchathram. There were seven brick kilns are situated around this village. 80 children are studied in this centre from the age group of 6 to 14. Two teachers were conducted classes for these children from 10 to 4 pm. Total 100 children were attended in this bridge school. Children are divided in to two groups by age 6 to 10 and 11 to 14 and each teacher were handled one group for close observations. Mainly used state board syllabus books which were children brought from their home. We used additional charts and pictures and teaching, learning materials.

Introduction

We are very happy to share our annual report for the year 2017 to 2018. We were also very happy for ASHA FOR EDUCATION supported our project again from long period gap. This have been helped our children of Migrant brick kiln workers for continue their study.

In May 2017 field visit was conducted by two volunteers of Asha in our working areas in Kannadapalayam village, Thiruvallur district. Bridge school centre

Subjects taught for the children at the bridge schools.

Tamil

Pictures of animals and the charts of ABL Methods, the text books of Government of Tamilnadu have been utilized to educate the children. The children were enabled to write the words, alphabets, and also read the words, and sentences. The children were educated to co joint the words, divide the conjoint words, meaning , synonyms, antonyms, poems and also the missing words, letters.

English

All the ABL (activity based learning methods) Cards used by the public schools in Tamilnadu have been utilized to educate and train the children. The children learnt the skills in writing alphabets, missing letters in words, and two, three letters, to read and write the same successfully. The children also learnt, the numerals, from 1 to 100, to read and write besides, writing and reading the names of animals, birds, fruits, vegetables, parts of the body, and simple poems.

Mathematics

ABL cards used in Mathematics teaching in schools have been used that is sparrow, kite, cock, crow, peacock, duck, and cards. The children were enabling to read, write the numerals. They also become capable of doing simple sums, subtractions, additions. Divisions, multiplications. They did additions and subtractions of one, two and 3 digits.

Ecology and Social Science

The children learnt the neighborhood, such as people contributing to the community in day to day life of the human beings, viz. Tailor, teacher, doctor, potter, weaver, carpenter, blacksmith, gold smith, and their relevance to human life. The children also learnt, about relevance of home, house, planets, plants, animals, birds, insects etc.

Drawing

The ABL cards, Pencil, and charts have been used to draw pictures and coloring the picture outlines. The children also name the pictures and colored them and enjoyed coloring and naming the pictures.

Games/ Sports

Children used ABL cards of banyan tree, monkey and squirrel that are subject related games for the children to experience in these games. The sports activities of outdoor nature viz. kho kho, kabbadi, water and floor, small pot and big pot, in and out games.

These activities entertained them and also increased their alertness and present to now happening around them.

Songs

ABL Cards of Mouth, Rabbit, and other cards, the children learnt the songs, the children also learn socially conscious songs that reflect their life and the people around.

Enrollment in government school and appointed one Teacher

Another one teacher was appointed by us in Andarasanpettai government Primary school. Because there is only one teacher by government appointed for regular children. But we have enrolled 20 children from brick kilns around in this school. So our teacher was taken care for brick kiln children education with the coordination of School head teacher. We used regular government syllabus books. Most of the children were brought their syllabus books and from their native villages. We have provided note books and learning teaching materials for all these children. Totally 120 children (Girls-62, Boys-58) have benefited from these two centres. These two centres (one bridge school, one govt school) were conducted two months from June to July in 2017 and three months from February to April in 2018.

Midday Meal

Midday meal was provided for these bridge school children from nearby Puduchathram government primary school. We were given a list of children and asked head teachers for midday meal. Midday meal cooked in the school and this was brought by school cook and served for these children for five days in a week. And in Andarasanpettai government school also provided midday meal for all children.

Nutrition for children

In addition we were also provided nutrition to the children in Kannadapalayam bridge school centre. We provided boiled pulses called sundal in the evening 3.30 pm. This was very healthy and nutrious for children and they are very happy. Some children are daily taking home some additional sundal for their younger siblings. The house owner Mrs. Padma and her daughter prepare the daily sundal and served to children with teachers help. Children are very happy for they have got midday meal and nutrition sundal and they come to school regularly.

Follow up Visits to migrant native villages

Usually migrant families return to their native villages in mid of July because brick making season over in this month. So we are conduct follow up visits from July to November. This year in 2017 we had received project grant from Asha for education in AUGUST 2017. We had conducted two follow up visits in Villupuram district in the month of September and October 2017.

Villuppuram visits

We had visited 4 villages in the first trip on 7th & 8th of September. We had visited 3 villages namely 1.Nallappalayam, 2.Pazhaya karuvatchi 3.Vengamur and we met 40 children who are studied in our centre in Thiruvallur. They are all re enrolled in the schools. We had visited schools in these villages.

And we had conducted our second trip on 5th & 6th of October 2017 in the same Villuppuram district. We had visited 5 villages in our second trip namely 1. Kalamarudur, 2. Iruvelpattu, 3. Emapper, 4.Arumalai, 5.S.Pilrampattu. We, a team of three teachers and one coordinator and one volunteer had visited these villages. We met school head mistress and discussed about migrant children re enrollment in their school. We have been identified that 58 children are re enrolled in schools from these villages when they come back to the villages. Most of the children who are studied in our centre are re enrolled in the schools. We also collected list of the children that have re enrolled. And we met our children and taken group photos for these children. We had also insist the school teachers to give quality education for these children and asked to do follow up these children when they migrate to other district with their parents for brick kiln and other work.

Conclusion

Totally 120 migrant children have directly benefited from this project. 3 Animators (Teachers) and 1 project coordinator had worked in this

project. 150 migrant families (parents) are benefited through our awareness

meetings about benefits of Tamilnadu government workers welfare board when they become registration.

We here sharing our heartful thanks to team of Asha Houston for reconsidered and supported our project. And we share our thanks to who are all helped directly or indirectly to this year project for achieving continuation of study of the marginalized children in most backward districts in Tamilnadu.
